To put River's self-sacrifice on an even higher level of awesome, consider this: - In Ariel, Simon mentions that River's amygdala has been stripped, making it impossible for her to shelve her emotions. I think it's implied that it also enhances her psychic abilities so she can't filter out thoughts and memories that aren't hers. - In Bushwhacked, Mal says there is probably only one way a person can deal with seeing the Reavers' madness up close, and that is to become like them. - Although they may seem to be the SF version of zombies, Reavers have the intelligence and skills needed to keep ships flying and coordinate their attacks. They must have memories and can probably look forward to future events. When River is fighting the Reavers, she is the focus of their attention. All their hunger, malice, and above all thoughts of what they're going to do to her will be in her head as well. There is a high chance she'll lose her grip on sanity and become a Reaver herself. And because of her high intelligence, *she knows all this before she starts running.*
