Prologue: Waking Up in a World of Dreams
Waking up, I yawned and stretched my arms, feeling my bones pop in a satisfying way before finally opening my eyes and taking in the room around me.
Well, calling it a room would be wrong. I was actually in a treehouse, one that anyone could tell at a glance had been built by kids.
Nonetheless, this treehouse held special memories for me—ones I now deeply cherished—and it also served as a relatively safe place to sleep, away from the wild fauna on the island.
It gave me a place where I could think in private and process the fact that I was somehow in the One Piece world, inhabiting the body of a fifteen-year-old Monkey D. Luffy, future Sun God Nika and Yonko, along with his memories.
“So, I wasn’t dreaming,” I muttered to myself in a somewhat high-pitched voice I was still getting used to. Out of curiosity, I grabbed my cheek and stretched it, watching it extend to outrageous, inhuman proportions. “Yep. Still made of rubber.”
One moment I was at my PC playing RDR2, and the next, some kind of R.O.B. appeared, told me I’d been “chosen” or some bullshit, and sent me off into a new life.
At least I had a bonus for my troubles: the power of the Chaos Gacha at my fingertips, even if it came with the downside of pre-rolled first draws and being stuck with three curses of varying annoyance.
CURSES
[Honesty]
Major Curse
You are an honest person, far too honest. You cannot communicate with the intent to deceive. No lies, no lies of omission, no clever wording. Whatever you say, you mean. So either stay silent or tell the truth.
Resolve: Acquire a Lie Detector ability or a Deception ability or acquire Adept rank communication/Persuasion
[Out of Shape]
Medium Curse
You are quite out of shape. Your physical abilities and athleticism are notably below average for your race or genetics. Nine times out of ten, you would lose to an average member of your species, and your body is completely untrained.
Resolve: Simply train your body into shape.
[Dead Tongue]
Minor Curse
You have no sense of taste. All food tastes like bland mush—like dirt on your tongue.
Resolve: Eat ten meals prepared by someone with Expert-level cooking or higher, or consume three or more Common-rank or higher food items.
TICKETS
[Relentless Stamina]
Elite Trait
Your stamina is ridiculous, even as a regular human you could run a marathon and not be winded, you also recover from exhaustion really fast and it takes a lot to get you exhausted.
[Magic Well]
Elite Trait
You have an abnormally large pool of energy you can access, allowing you to use abilities and spells for far longer.
[Thunder breathing]
Elite Skill
Demon Slayer - Thunder Breathing is a specialized swordsmanship style and breathing technique that mimics lightning, specifically swift strikes and movements akin to lightning ripping through the sky, and replicates it with the user's movements, techniques and abilities. Most, if not all, known techniques and forms involve utilizing blinding speeds and immensely fast attacks to overwhelm the enemy in an instant. With magical power, thunder can be manifested to further augment the power of the style.
Looking over my stats for a bit, I let out a sigh and got up. There was no point wasting the precious time I had before I set out on my journey two years from now.
I’d already done enough panicking yesterday when I arrived, and there was no use stressing over it now. Waking up had confirmed this wasn’t some bad dream.
“At least I got some really nice rolls for my first picks,” I muttered with a small smile, trying to cheer myself up. “And honestly, the biggest drawback is Dead Tongue, especially since I inherited Luffy’s massive appetite.”
“I just have to wait until I meet Sanji again in two years so I can get rid of it and get my taste buds back. The other curses aren’t too bad, and I can always retrain myself with the help of my memories.”
Slapping my cheeks once to shake off the last of my drowsiness, I headed toward the exit of the treehouse and looked down at the jungle below.
“Well, time to get some breakfast and start training.”
Without another thought, I jumped off the treehouse, even though it was at least two stories high.
Landing in a crouch, I thanked my lucky stars that I was made of rubber before standing up and heading in the direction where I remembered there being some apple trees.
=====
“AAAHHHHH! How the fuck could I forget this jungle is full of giant, man-eating tigers?!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, tears streaming down my face as I ducked under a lunging swipe, barely avoiding being eaten on my second day here, before sprinting off like a bat out of hell.
Spotting a cluster of tall trees ahead, I instinctively stretched my arm toward the highest branch. Relief flooded me as I was launched upward, away from the tiger that very much wanted me for its next meal.
Still not used to my rubber body, I botched the landing and slammed into the trunk. Thankfully, being made of rubber meant I didn’t feel a thing. I quickly wrapped my arms around the tree and clung to it for dear life.
“How the fuck are people on this island still alive with animals like these running around?!” I shouted, glaring down at the tiger as it prowled around the base of the tree, watching me hungrily.
It seemed I had seriously underestimated how dangerous this island was, especially since I wasn’t as strong as I should have been. Thanks to the Out of Shape curse, all the strength Luffy had built up until now was gone.
Normally, with his ridiculous strength, I wouldn’t have had any trouble dealing with that tiger, or any animal on this island, really.
But because of the curse, I was back to being as strong as a regular fifteen-year-old.
“Just you wait until I get my strength back, you asshole tiger!” I yelled, too angry and embarrassed to care that I was shouting at a wild animal. “Then we’ll see who runs from who!”
As if mocking me, the tiger let out a low, challenging growl. Then, either out of pity or to add insult to injury, I heard a ping, followed by a notification appearing in the corner of my vision.
Feat Achieved! Survive being eaten by a tiger.
+1 Bronze Random Ticket
“…That counted as an achievement?” I muttered flatly, unsure whether to feel embarrassed or offended, especially since it only gave me a bronze ticket.
“Whatever. A ticket’s a ticket.”
I rolled it, keeping my expectations low so I wouldn’t be disappointed.
[Rolling Ticket…]
[Cardio]
Common Trait
You have great cardio, granting you slightly increased stamina and faster exhaustion recovery. You’ve got a solid set of lungs and a strong heart.
Staring at the result, I felt my eyebrow twitch.
“Is this thing mocking me?” I muttered. “I get this after running away from a tiger?”
Shaking my head, I let out a long sigh, forcing the frustration out of my system.
“…I need a weapon.”
I blinked, then my eyes widened.
“Wait. There should be some old metal pipes back at the treehouse, from when we were kids.”
The thought of finally having a weapon immediately lifted my mood, and I started heading back, unfortunately on an empty stomach, since I’d dropped the fruit when the tiger jumped me.
“Ugh… these two years are going to suck,” I groaned as my stomach growled in protest. “I really need to get my strength back so I can actually hunt.”
=====
Several Days Later
“Fuck my life! How the hell is a metal club supposed to help against a giant snake?!” I shouted, once again running for my life, silently thanking my stamina-boosting traits, because without them, I’d already be dead.
This made the sixth time in my first week here that I’d nearly died, and I was already sick of it.
I couldn’t train properly because I needed food to recover.
And I couldn’t get food because the only places with enough to satisfy my bottomless appetite were crawling with the most dangerous animals on the island.
I was stuck in a fucking loop, and it was starting to drive me insane, not helped at all by the fact that any food I managed to find tasted like dirt. I had no choice but to suck it up and swallow it whole without tasting it.
“FUCK YOU, R.O.B.! I swear I’ll get you for this one day!” I shouted at the sky, hoping my words somehow reached the bastard who had put me in this situation.
The worst part? I hadn’t received any more tickets the past few days, despite escaping death by the skin of my teeth multiple times.
=====
A Week Later
“FINALLY! TAKE THAT, YOU STUPID TIGER! I TOLD YOU I WAS GOING TO EAT YOU!” I roared triumphantly, standing over the fallen beast, one foot planted on its body, fist raised high in victory.
After getting my ass handed to me by just about everything on this island—tigers, bears, snakes, even vultures—I stopped trying to fight them head-on and started thinking smarter.
That’s why yesterday afternoon I spent hours sharpening sticks into crude spears using a jagged rock, going to bed hungry afterward.
This morning, I woke up, swallowed a few apples without even chewing, thankful for my rubber body, and headed into the forest with my makeshift weapons.
Moving as quietly as I could, I found a tiger. I had no idea if it was the same one that had nearly killed me before, and honestly, I didn’t care. In my mind they were all the same anyway.
Using my rubber powers, I grabbed a spear and stretched my arm as far back as it could go. Then I snapped it forward like a rubber band, releasing the spear at the last possible second.
With all that built-up momentum, the crude weapon shot forward like a high-caliber bullet.
A second later, it struck the tiger clean through the torso, tearing straight through it and killing it instantly.
I stood there for a few moments, stunned that it had actually worked.
Then I let out a primal roar of victory.
“WATCH OUT! I’M NOT THE PREY ANYMORE, I’M THE PREDATOR NOW!!”
It had taken nearly two weeks, but things were finally looking up.
At the very least, I wouldn’t be going to bed hungry anymore.
Now, I could finally start training for real.
…Still no ticket, though—which pissed me off.
=====
Several Days Later
“Burp.”
Patting my now literally round belly, full of bear meat, I let out a satisfied sigh. A warm sense of fullness settled over me as I leaned back, hands behind my head, staring up at the clear blue sky. My straw hat rested on the ground beside me.
With the constant worry of feeding myself on an island full of dangerous predators, and the high that came from finally achieving a basic standard of living, I hadn’t really had time to think about the future.
Honestly, I’d been pushing those thoughts away until I got properly settled. But now that I wasn’t at risk of starving, I couldn’t keep putting it off.
I’d been running on autopilot, focused solely on survival and training, that the reality of being in a completely new world still hadn’t fully sunk in.
“…Do I even want to be a pirate anymore?” I muttered, frowning in confusion.
I considered the alternative, and immediately shook my head.
“Well, it’s still better than working under slavers and the worst kind of people imaginable,” I said with a scowl, thinking of the Celestial Dragons, the so-called rulers of this world.
“Even if I don’t want to be a pirate, I’ll get labeled as one anyway because of my lineage,” I added with a sigh. There really wasn’t any middle ground.
In this world, if you sailed the seas, you either flew the Marine flag or the Jolly Roger. There was no in-between. Even adventurers like Noland had been tied to the World Government through their nations.
“What about the One Piece?” I murmured.
Suddenly, a strong sense of yearning welled up in my chest, a yearning of adventure so strong it took my breath away, something that clearly came from both the original Luffy and myself.
I’d been a huge fan of One Piece before ending up here. I’d fallen in love with the world Oda created, keeping up with every manga release like clockwork.
“Guess that answers that,” I said, a grin spreading across my face as excitement bubbled up inside me. “Shishishishi~ If I’m going to be a pirate anyway, I might as well be the strongest—and the best—there is.”
My thoughts drifted to my future crewmates, and a faint frown tugged at my lips.
Nami was out there right now, suffering under Arlong, risking her life every day to buy her village back from the racist Fish-Men. Then there was Robin, Chopper, and Brook, all dealing with their own demons, though at least Chopper was safe for now, learning under Dr. Kureha.
“Haah… there’s no point thinking about that right now,” I muttered, frustration creeping into my voice. “I’m so weak that even the weakest Fish-Men in Arlong’s crew could kill me without any trouble.”
Rolling my shoulders and popping my neck, I pushed myself to my feet and stretched.
“That means my focus right now should be getting my old strength back, and then going beyond it.”
“If there’s one thing I know about this world, it’s that the ceiling for power is absurd. I just hope my knowledge of the anime and manga is enough to guide me into unlocking Haki… or at least some of the Rokushiki techniques.”
“I won’t rely on the Gacha to save me,” I added with a firm nod. “I already have more than enough to work with.”
I took a deep breath, then grinned.
“Alright! Let the training montage officially begin!”
