Chapter 1: Before Setting Sail

Eight Months Later

“Haah… haah… let’s rest for a bit, shall we? I feel like I’m about to throw up everything in my stomach,” I muttered tiredly as I lay on the ground, staring up at the sky.

“As you wish, young master,” a soft, feminine voice replied from above me. A moment later, I felt her sit down on the grass beside me. “Would you like something to drink? I brought some juice.”

Turning my head toward her, I was greeted by the sight of an extremely beautiful woman with long blonde hair and cold, emotionless blue eyes. She wore a simple outfit that wouldn’t look out of place among the people in town.

She looked to be in her early twenties, with long legs, wide hips, and a well-proportioned figure, nothing exaggerated like some of the women in this world.

This was my familiar, Black Knife Tiche, whom I had obtained from a Silver Ticket about two months ago after visiting Dadan.

[Black Knife Tiche]

Rare Familiar

Elden Ring — A Black Knife Assassin who helped assassinate Godwyn the Golden during the night of the Black Knives. In addition to being an incredibly skilled assassin, Tiche's knife is imbued with a lesser form of destined death, making the wounds she inflicts be unable to be healed and ignoring durability to an extent.

After accepting the juice she poured into an empty beer bottle, I let my thoughts drift back to the past months of training.

Eight months had passed since I began pushing my body to its limits to get back into shape, and just a few weeks ago, I had finally achieved that goal, helped greatly by Tiche’s arrival.

Every day had fallen into a routine: wake up, hunt for food, then train. Break for meals, then train again until exhaustion.

Thanks to my rubber body, I could endure a ridiculous amount of punishment before hitting my limits, something further boosted by my Relentless Stamina and Cardio traits. It allowed me to train far beyond what should have been possible.

With each passing day, I could feel myself growing stronger, and that alone kept me going.

Still… it got really lonely.

For months, my only company had been wild animals and my own thoughts.

That was why, on a whim two months ago, I decided to visit Dadan and her bandit family. Rough as she was, she had taken care of me when I was younger, and I had a soft spot for her. Considering her along with Makino as a sort of mother or aunt.

I was greeted with the usual insults and rough attitude, but at the time, I was just happy to see other people again. I didn’t mind it one bit.

That’s why it completely caught me off guard when I received my second ticket after six months, just for visiting her.

Excited, I rolled it as soon as I got back to the treehouse.

That was how I ended up with Tiche.

Curious about what triggered it, I decided to test things the next day by heading down the mountain to Foosha Village to visit Makino.

She was genuinely happy to see me, and also scolded me for not visiting sooner, which I apologized for.

To my surprise, and satisfaction, I received another Silver Ticket just from meeting her.

After eating a meal at the bar cooked my Makino, pretending it actually tasted good, I returned to the mountain and resumed my training.

On the way there, I rolled my ticket and ended up with a weapon I immediately fell in love with.

It was none other than the Malorian Overture from Cyberpunk 2077, basically a high-powered revolver.

[Malorian Overture]

Uncommon Item

Cyberpunk 2077 — A heavy-duty, double-action revolver produced by Malorian Arms. Incredibly powerful, it can punch through heavily augmented targets with ease. You also receive 30 bullets for it each day.

With a gun on hand for emergencies and Tiche by my side, I resumed my training, feeling a lot better knowing I had someone to talk to.

Tiche, while quiet most of the time, was extremely attentive and followed my every word to the letter. At the very least, her presence kept the loneliness at bay.

Thanks to her, I had spent the last two months trying to unlock Haki, with very little progress… until now.

Using the training method I remembered Rayleigh would one day teach Luffy—or me, I guess—I applied the same principles.

For Observation Haki, or Kenbunshoku, I had Tiche throw small pebbles at me while I wore a blindfold, trying to sense their trajectory.

For Armament Haki, or Busōshoku, I spent hours punching a rock, attempting to coat my arms with it.

As for Conqueror’s Haki or Haōshoku, I unfortunately hadn’t unlocked it yet, so I focused on the other two for the time being.

After two months of nonstop effort, I had finally made a breakthrough today. I could faintly sense some of the pebbles thrown at me, and I had managed to coat part of my fist in that familiar, glossy black sheen of Armament.

That wasn’t all I was working on, either.

I also wanted to learn Rokushiki, the set of techniques used by elite Marines and members of Cipher Pol.

In particular: I had my eye on Soru, Geppo, Tekkai, Rankyaku, and Shigan.

Once again, my rubber body proved to be a huge advantage in training, even if my progress so far had been slow.

“That reminds me,” I said, pulling myself out of my thoughts as I turned toward Tiche, who had been silently watching me.

“If I want to get a handle on my swordsmanship, I really need a katana. Would you mind sneaking into the Goa Kingdom and seeing if you can find one? I’m sure some rich asshole has one lying around as decoration.”

“As you command, young master. I will depart tonight under the cover of moonlight.”

She bowed her head immediately, and I couldn’t help but frown a little.

I’d tried to get her to stop calling me “Master,” multiple times but with little success. According to her, calling me anything else wasn’t something she was capable of due to her upbringing and training.

“Thanks. Just make sure you stay unnoticed. We don’t want to draw attention from those nobles,” I said.

“Understood.”

“Anyway, have you made any progress with Haki?” I asked, turning toward her as I sat up, my body finally recovering and placing my straw hat on my head.

I was curious whether Tiche could even learn it. Haki was supposed to be something all living beings could develop, but she wasn’t exactly from this world so the ability might be locked to her.

“I’m afraid not,” she replied, shaking her head. “However, after observing your breakthrough today, I now have a clearer understanding of the goal. I will continue training so I do not disappoint you, Master.”

“You won’t disappoint me,” I said immediately, shaking my head. “You’ve already been a huge help, so don’t think like that.”

“As for Haki, just remember what I told you, it’s all about willpower. From the way I remember it being explained, it is the act of not doubting. If you keep that in mind, I’m sure you’ll get it eventually.”

I did my best to mimic the kind of wise expression Rayleigh would probably make.

Judging by the slight twitch at the corner of her lips, whether from my explanation or my expression, I decided not to comment. Still, it was nice seeing her slowly open up to me.

“Thank you for your encouragement,” Tiche said with a small bow.

“Shishishi, don’t worry about it. I’ve got faith in you. Now, what do you say we keep going?” I asked, pushing myself to my feet and stretching.

“As you wish.”

=====

15 Months Later

“Thunder Breathing, First Form: Thunderclap and Flash.”

I muttered softly, focusing on my breathing as my hand gripped the hilt of my katana. In the next instant, I dashed forward at blinding speed.

A horizontal slash—too fast to follow—cut clean through the air.

A moment later, the massive tree I had been using as a target trembled… then slowly split apart.

The soft click of my katana sliding back into its sheath broke the silence as I exhaled, letting my overworked muscles relax.

“Haah… who knew Total Concentration Breathing would mesh so well with my rubber body?” I muttered, straightening up. “It almost feels like a discount version of Gear Two.”

“Well done, young master. As always, you never cease to surprise me with how quickly you learn.”

Tiche’s calm, monotone voice came from behind me as I heard her footsteps approach.

Turning toward her, I saw her holding out a towel, which I gratefully took before wiping the sweat from my face.

“Thanks, Tiche, but I’ve still got a long way to go,” I said, shaking my head. “In fifteen months, I’ve only managed the basics of Haki, picked up five out of the six Rokushiki techniques, and my swordsmanship still hasn’t been tested against anyone actually strong. Same with my Haki.”

A little over a year had passed, and with my journey set to begin next month, I knew I wouldn’t be getting much stronger in the little time I had left.

“I apologize that I could not be of more assistance,” Tiche said, lowering her head slightly.

I shook my head, already used to her blaming herself.

“I’ve told you before, and I’ll keep saying it until it sticks, you’re the reason I’ve gotten this strong this fast. Without you, I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am now.”

“You are too kind, Master,” Tiche replied quietly, lifting her gaze to meet mine, a hint of reverence in her eyes.

“I’m just telling the truth,” I shrugged.

Walking forward, I sat down on a large tree stump. Nearby, a giant tiger had just finished roasting over a fire, courtesy of Tiche.

While none of us were what could be considered cooks, at least we could do basic things like this.

“Now let’s eat. We’ve only got a month left before we leave this place and start our journey. Moments like this won’t come often, so we might as well enjoy them while we can.”

Stretching my arm forward, I tore off a large chunk of meat and took a bite, swallowing without chewing.

With no sense of taste, there was no real point in savoring it.

“As you wish,” Tiche said, sitting beside me and taking a much smaller portion for herself. “Are you still planning to travel in the fishing boat the mayor procured for you? We still have time to acquire a proper vessel with the funds I obtained.”

During her trips to the Goa Kingdom in search of a katana, Tiche had also taken the initiative to relieve several nobles of their excess wealth, or Berry, as it was called in this world.

She hadn’t taken enough to draw attention, but over the past year, she had accumulated nearly ten million Berry.

Technically, we could afford a far better ship than the one waiting for me.

…but I hesitated.

The Going Merry had always held a special place for me, both in the manga and later in the anime. It just felt wrong getting another ship.

Speaking of swords, after several trips to the Goa Kingdom Tiche had gotten lucky and managed to get her hands on one of the 50 Skillful Grade Blades called Muramasa which I was now using.

It was a blade with a black and red saya, a black and red tsuka and a silver blade.

“Yeah… we can always upgrade later,” I said after a moment.

As I ate, I pulled up my current stats and noticed the still-unused Silver Random Ticket I had received about half a year ago after helping Tiche deal with some bandits.

[Feat Achieved! Take Your First Life]

+1 Silver Random Ticket

In fifteen months, this was the only additional ticket I’d managed to earn, which was honestly a bit disappointing. I wasn’t sure if that was because canon hadn’t technically started yet or because I hadn’t done anything noteworthy enough.

Either way, I’d been so focused on training that I pushed it to the back of my mind. Honestly, I might’ve forgotten about the Chaos Gacha entirely if it weren’t for Tiche constantly being by my side.

What surprised me the most though, that I had felt absolutely nothing at all when we had killed the group of bandits. Tiche had done a bit of research into them before we dealt with them and found out some nasty things about them.

When it came time to finally deal with them, I felt no hesitation at all when I used my revolver to blow holes into their bodies.

I still didn’t know if that was a good thing or not but I would only start worrying if I felt nothing when innocent bystanders were hurt.

Seeing no reason to keep holding onto it, I decided to roll.

[Rolling Ticket…]

[Healing Light]

Rare Ability

Allows you to bathe a target in healing light, capable of restoring even severe wounds. Effect scales with your power level. Stronger targets require more energy.

Blinking as I read the description, I immediately slotted it in. Instinctively, I understood how to use it, I could now heal others with my own energy.

“Nice. My first ability, and it’s a healing one. Can’t go wrong with that,” I muttered, tearing off another piece of meat and swallowing it whole.

My words caught Tiche’s attention. She was eating in a neat composed manner, the complete opposite of my own savage approach.

“Hmm. Did you finally roll the ticket you were saving, Master? Healing sounds like a very useful tool for the journey ahead,” she said calmly.

“I agree. Now if only this thing would give me infinite money, food, or an inventory, I’d be set,” I added, lightly glaring at the floating screen as if I could force it to cooperate.

Of course, nothing happened, but at least I felt a little better.

There was almost no reliability with this thing. It was completely random. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day I rolled a spoon or something equally mundane.

“Already thinking about loot, are we?” Tiche asked, the faintest hint of amusement tugging at her lips.

“Shishishi—well, even if I don’t really want to be called a pirate, since most of them are scum, you can’t go wrong with having infinite money,” I laughed.

“True.”

It took several minutes before we finished—well, before I finished the giant tiger—and we both stood up.

Letting out a small burp, I patted my stomach contentedly.

“Yeah… I don’t feel like training for the rest of the day. What do you say we go rob some nobles?” I grinned, turning toward Tiche.

In response, she raised a perfectly manicured eyebrow before nodding, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly with hidden excitement.

“It would be my pleasure to spend time with you, young Master.”

And just like that, the rest of the month passed.

Tiche and I spent our nights sneaking into the Goa Kingdom, relieving corrupt nobles of their valuables, and enjoying every second of it.

I didn’t feel an ounce of remorse.

Most of them were corrupt as hell, and they wouldn’t even notice the amounts we were taking.

Besides… they deserved it for what they did to Sabo.
