I used to carry a fannypack with a small notebook and a couple pencils everywhere I went to. Every time I had to wait in line for something (paying bills, doctor appointment, etc), I would take out my notebook and scribble stuff, maybe draw a quick sketch. Not only it helped me endure those boring moments of dead time, they were also one of the main creative outputs I had for years.
