The bullet slid out with a soft, wet sound and clinked against the floor.
Blood. Too close.
Sticky warmth seeped through the mask and touched his tongue with a metallic taste. Only then did Berkan realize he had been holding his breath.
“Now… gauze…” came a whisper.
His hand found the cloth on its own and pressed it to the wound. Blood seeped through. His fingers tightened. Too tight. Berkan forced himself to loosen his grip. His other hand held the weakened body close. He lowered his head a little nearer.
Inhale.
The smell of blood hit harder, and something inside him answered with a dull tension.
“This is… going a lot smoother…” the stray muttered quietly.
The giant clenched his jaw and slowly pulled his head back, as if that tiny distance could change anything.
“You said how to do it. I listened.”
The bleeding gradually eased, and the pulse beneath his fingers no longer pounded so wildly. But the smell didn’t fade. Suddenly, the weight in his arms shifted: the stray tried to shift away on his own — weakly, but stubbornly. Berkan didn’t stop him.
Now they were almost level, face to face. He wasn’t grimacing in pain anymore, not hissing, not snapping. On the contrary… his gaze was more open. That was unsettling.
“Is it going to be like this from now on?” he asked hoarsely.
The question hung in the air. Berkan had made his decision back when he found him. But now, for a brief moment, his senses sharpened, and his thoughts slipped out of rhythm. The mutt didn’t understand what was happening… And that was good.
“Maybe,” he said evenly. “If you’re useful.”
Berkan focused on the bandage, tightening the cloth around the thigh. His fingers were too large for this kind of work, yet they moved precisely, as if he were clinging to the process itself. So he wouldn’t think about anything else… The knot settled tight, but the stray didn’t protest.
The air between them grew thicker. The lantern flickered, again and again tearing shadows from the walls as they slid downward. The smell of blood didn’t let go. On the contrary, it settled deeper, mixing with the warmth beneath his palm. Alive. Dangerous. Berkan didn’t notice it right away — his hand was resting on the thigh, covering almost the entire area. His fingers shifted slightly… it would only take bringing them together for the grip to become something else. The realization came sharply when his wrist was pushed aside.
“So what now?” the mutt asked.
The warmth disappeared, and with it something inside tightened briefly. Berkan exhaled slowly, forcing himself to pull himself together. Control.
“Now I watch,” he repeated quietly, restrained. “And you’re the one who heals.”
He wiped his hands on a piece of cloth. Clean. Almost…
