"See back in the day, girls hadn't much choice 'tween using their bodies or using their voice." the context makes it very clear that 'tween' there is shortened "between", and not referring to young people AKA "tweens". Also it looks like the apostrophe is there, but the g above it is overlapping it. I believe "girls" and "'tween" are likely used because they're single syllable words and fit well in the flow of the poem.

Suggestion for the last line or two to fit the meter better: 'and seventeen million' 'were instantly/suddenly/totally dead'
