Chapter 13: Sudden Success
(original chapter title: N/A)
Aaand finally we conclude the material that was in the dang Passings chapter. I was NOT kidding about how much I've fleshed out the beginning of the story.
I'm going to step out of the afterwords for a second to whine: I SWEAR it wasn't intentional, but I've ended up sharing two of the chapters I've least looked forward to sharing... at the exact same time. Chapter 13 is one that people will have OPINIONS about, no doubt. And Chapter 33 is one of the most daunting chapters I've ever tried to write due to the characters that appear. So, yeah, kiiind of stressed at the moment and am REALLY hoping for the best both from the RR comments and you beautiful Patreon members (have I mentioned recently how grateful I am to each and every one of you?).
Back to afterwording! Sudden Success was in many ways a pivotal chapter (and it NEARLY got renamed to Blind Success to fit, but I decided not to). Ranthia succeeds in her goal. ...But how?
Not answering!
Seriously, explanations come up until, at last, everything is revealed. And I DID add a hint with the guide's final bit at the end of the chapter. But you'll have to be (very) patient to get the rest of the details. Or make your own assumptions!
But there is method to my madness. (And madness to my method, admittedly.)
Aside from that, I loved getting the chance to visit how Ranthia's relationship with Pupius evolves as I expanded these sections. Them brawling wasn't planned, but it just kind of naturally happened as I wrote them. I kind of adore it. Tatius treats her like a daughter, Pupius wants to treat her like a fellow soldier/Adventurer; and finally he can.
My favorite bit of the chapter though? The idiotic "there was a bear" excuse Ranthia dropped. She's so awful about being put on the spot and I love it.
A new class, Ranthia tested as an Adventurer, and her relationship with the men evolving. Stick around and see what comes of all of this! ...Except the bear. There was never a bear.
