EN: The Relief of Knowing It’s Not About You
For most of my life, I carried the weight of being a people pleaser. I thought that if someone was upset, disappointed, or even angry with me, it was because I had done something wrong. I would replay their words in my head, searching for ways I could have acted differently, wishing I had been more perfect, more careful, more pleasing. It was exhausting to live that way — constantly measuring my worth through the reactions of others.
But over time, I’ve discovered something that has brought me a deep sense of relief: most of people’s actions have very little to do with you, and almost everything to do with them.
When someone yells, calls you names, or lashes out, they’re not truly describing you. They’re expressing their inability to manage emotions like shame, sadness, disappointment, or frustration. What comes out of their mouth is often a projection of their inner world — the parts of themselves they can’t yet hold, process, or accept.
Realizing this shifted everything for me. Instead of internalizing blame, I’ve learned to pause and see the bigger picture. Their reaction doesn’t define me. It doesn’t mean I’m unworthy or unlovable. It simply means they’re wrestling with something they don’t yet know how to carry.
Integrating this truth into my life has been liberating. I no longer bend myself into impossible shapes to avoid conflict or criticism. I no longer feel the need to “fix” every emotion in the room. Instead, I’ve learned to stand in my own center, to recognize that their projection is not my responsibility, and to offer compassion — not just to them, but to myself.
The relief of this understanding is hard to put into words. It feels like finally being able to breathe after holding my breath for years. And while I still have moments where the old patterns creep in, I remind myself: it’s not about me. That reminder alone creates space for peace, for self-trust, and for a gentler way of being in the world.
