In this video I’m trying out a new premium home cinema projector, one sent to me by the manufacturer.

If you’ve been putting up with my oddcasts over the last year, you’ll know that projectors have been a reoccurring theme. From the feedback I’ve received so far, this seems to be a topic that I’m almost uniquely interested in.

However as my YouTube channel is all about the things I find interesting, if you do choose to watch this video you’ll get to see why I was particularly enthusiastic to take a look at this one. In the past I’ve failed to find any projector under £20,000 with the degree of optical flexibility necessary to suit my ideal placement.  Until now.

Here’s the video.

https://youtu.be/pn67xbYGHrE

As you know I rarely take review samples. The only other recent occasion has been the Bumpboxx, which I've subsequently regretted agreeing to due to all the hassle its preproduction state created.

As soon as that video started falling apart I questioned my decision to take on this project too, which I’d agreed to at around the same time as the Bumpboxx. I went so far as to contact Xgimi to tell them not to bother sending the projector. But it was too late, the parcel had already left Hong Kong.

As it is though I’m now really glad this did arrive and you can find out why in the video.

Given the full-on nature of making the last few videos (I haven’t had a day or evening off for over a month)  I now need to take some time off to rest and reset before starting afresh on something new. This will inevitably result in a slightly extended delay before the next video. First though I need to take some very large boxes to the tip.

Have a good remainder of your week and take care.

Weird how you hated their mini fold up projector but like this one. Shows they are good when they get it right I guess.

techmoan

That was from Aurzen - all these names are just word salad now.

Sarah Fenway

Oh yes! Xgimi make a different portable projector. Like you say, it all looks like a scrabble game gone wrong.

techmoan

I'd imagine Xgimi would be a good score (but I'm not a player).

Simon Stanley

Oh no. I thought I was safe when you said you turned it down. I thought this might be decent judging from the Hook Up reviews on previous models and the feature set and the discounts are very tempting but I'm going to resist. For now.

Galactician

I've had the same projector in my bedroom for maybe 14 years and this is the first time I have felt any real compulsion to upgrade. With all the "take one for the team" reviews you do, it's such a treat to see you test out something that knocks it out of the park. I hope your well-earned break is coupled with tons of Moancave projector time!

Mark Wayt

Great video - interestingly I notice Linus Sebastian (under the short circuit channel) also reviewed this same projector last week. His review was also pretty positive.

Chris Burns

Hi Mat. I think you missed the paid promotion check box (to avoid the complainers we all love 😒). One other thing. You talked about the MEMC feature and stated people are insane to use that feature. I thought that was out of character for your channel. You have stated “you do you” in a number of videos when viewers critique how you demonstrate audio equalizers, for example. “You are destroying the sound” garbage. I hope this helps but perhaps I have this wrong and it’s my bad. BTW, enjoy your break!! Thank you for so many videos this year.

techmoan

It’s definitely got a tick in the Paid Promotion box on YouTube, perhaps it doesn’t show up onscreen when it’s an unlisted video.

Mark Hesse

Another ITIC video😃

techmoan

More of a ITTWPNGBIIC Interesting Thing That Will Probably Never Go Back In Its Case

Mark Hesse

So, you're saying there's a chance it will go back in? (I'm still in the midst of watching it)🤞

Mark Hesse

"Moancave" Excellent term!😃

Amro

Congratulations - what a lovely system you have. The only slightly weird thing is that you'd expect the Sony/Panasonic/etc to be making the best projector but the Xgimi (who I'd never heard of before) - how amazing really. (That comment probably aged me haha).

Robert

I didn't know you still get the rainbow effect on laser projectors. But yes, the colors are not projected at the same time. So I'll have to keep my 3LCD projector because the rainbow effect drives me crazy. Also interesting that a projector of this price (I saw an offer outside of kickstarter for 5.500€) is still not real 4k but that two shifted 1080p images technique. I'm sure it still looks great but I thought for that price it's real 4k.

Mark Hesse

Seeing Mat smiling at the end of the video, (reminding me of Mend It Mark when he gets an electric shock) would normally mean something is horribly wrong, but in this case it looks like something is horribly right. Actually nice to see that this gadget is working out well. Announcing that he's already ordered a screen for this projector (likely spending big $$/££/€€ as well) is also a good sign that things are working out (hoping that this Interesting Thing won't go back in it's case).👍🙂

I'm an owner of one of the last 3D capable production TV's, Panasonic 50" EX750, which was one their 2017 range of models. I had been looking at buying a refurbished Sony (I think it was) OLED, which would have been way more than I had ever paid for a TV even with it being effectively second hand, then out of the blue Panasonic announced one last gasp. I didn't get one straight away, waited until they released the 2018 models and the prices dropped, caught it at pretty much the lowest they ever got before scarcity kicked in and drove them back up again. It's been a while since I watched a 3D bluray, but I'm still going to be reluctant when the day comes that I'll have to replace it. The thing that always frustrates me: I get that 3D fell out of fashion, yet again, but modern screens and the hardware that powers them is generally more than capable of displaying 3D feeds via alternating frames, they've just removed the transceiver that communicates with the required glasses. The glasses are cheap enough to produce, but manufacturers are too cheap to include that little piece of hardware.

Big Car

I'm so glad you've found something that works well. In your projector search have you found a reasonably priced projector that has a 2.8 throw ratio? I'm going to install one in a particularly wide room and I don't want to have a crazy big screen.

techmoan

Unfortunately the pixel shift thing is oft misunderstood as it can produce fantastic super sharp 4k, it’s a bit like saying it’s not true colour because it’s only showing one colour at a time.

Big Car

Another one - what's your recommendation for a good place to get a motorised drop down screen? 120" to 150"?

techmoan

Yes once upon a time it was JVC vs Sony vs Optoma, NEC, Viewsonic etc etc….its all changed

techmoan

I had a 3D OLED and the full resolution passive 3D was a revelation. I could clip cheap passive glasses on to my own, it was as perfect an experience as you could get at the time and something very few people got to experience. That said, I’ve never seen 3D pop like it has on my new setup, it’s the best I’ve ever seen outside of a theme park IMAX experience.

Grace Robbins

• I, for one, like your moire pattern shirt. It looks very nice. • "Take it off, s-" just in time you cut the 'slowly' part. 😏 • "You switch it off on your own because you're not insane." 😁 There's lots of settings I have to mess with on hotel TVs before I can mildly tolerate them. • What I would like to see, literally, are 3D glasses that are more comfortable and convenient for near-sighted prescription wearers. It's not going to happen, but frankly I doubt I will see any more 3D movies anyway. 😔 • I enjoy seeing your happiness when something goes right, for a change. It is a drawback, however, to have to get another projector screen. How are you going to store another one in the bowels of your garage? • I get vicarious fun watching your projector videos. I wonder if there are any unique retro projectors you can feature. I liked the slideshow one you did a while back that recorded narration for each slide. Have a good R&R and take care 🤍

Robert

Well, two 2k images is not 4k. You could call it 3k at best.

Chris Burns

Yeah, I should have assumed that you did even thought it didn’t show up in the unlisted YouTube video.

techmoan

I do plan on featuring a more ‘groovy’ projector at some point…but it definitely doesn’t show video. I’m going to have to try selling some stuff, especially unused projectors and screens. But if that doesn’t work out it’s off to the tip, because it’s not the kind of stuff that charity shops would want.

Buckaroo Bunny Slippers

Watching this, all I could think was "He's gonna end up ordering another screen, isn't he!" How many is this now?! We def need a follow up with the final setup and perhaps some champagne!

techmoan

I’ll do Oddcast updates when next there’s an Oddcast and an update.

Tom Holec

Pat and Mat spotted! 👀

Martipar

I'm glad you have finally found a projector to settle on.

Peter Laws

lol. When the video started, I thought I saw that the price on Kickstarter was going to be 20,000 ($ or £ whichever) so you'd say something like "and it has all sorts of 3D options" and I would think, well, yeah, for 20 grand ... And then I see that it's 1/10 of that. Oy. Nice projector. Agree it needs more HDMI ports.

Tim Applegate

The projector/screen arc is one of my favorite Techmoan storylines.

Chris Horry

Gosh for all that I was expecting it to cost way more than that. If I ever do a home theater setup then it's on the shortlist.

MJFJ

Hello Mat, Great you found this projector and that it suits all your needs. I have learnt alot from your review. I am thinking of a Projector my myself this review has helped me greatly. There is so much to know about this stuff. Enjoy your new Projector 📽️ 🙂

Big Car

Thx. Yes, very familiar with that site. I'm pondering if I make my screen a little bigger (150") then I can use an Optoma UHZ66 at the back of the room. I have a year to decide anyway, they're still pouring the foundations.

techmoan

The only reason I gave that link is that it lets you search by throw distance and if they don’t have anything in their database I’m not sure it exists. This was the problem I had too and AFAIK this projector is the only one that can get this far back.

Jørn Birkeland Rosengren

Yes speakers are excessive in this Almost everyone have a Bluetooth speaker that would do the same job in certain scenarios I guess Just not a thing for none budget one. Looks tailor-made for your shelf, Though there was a unnatural (in your settings) dark area on the shelf under

Cliff Fornwalt

You and I bought the same projector and screen basically at the same time. Part of the issue with the speckle was that you bought an ambient light rejecting screen, which has a kind of textured surface to not reflect light coming in from the sides, which means it REALLY reflects light coming in straight on. I'd be curious to know if your new screen that reduced laser speckle is also an ambient light rejecting screen. If you could get rid of laser speckle and also reject ambient light you could use it more during the day. Of course a 7000 lumen output might make ambient light rejecting unnecessary. That's really bright. The Anker nebula x1 is 3500 lumens and $2200 on Amazon. This one seems a bit more expensive but way way brighter.

techmoan

Yes I did go into why the ALR was most likely the issue with my screen but had to edit it out as the video has too much in it about speckle already. The new screen I ordered can be found at the following link, but if you scroll to the bottom of this page you’ll see what difference each material makes, I got matte grey. https://www.wuprobuy.com/collections/motorized-floor-rising-screen/products/wupro-cinema-level-enhance-gain-motorized-tension-floor-rising-alr-projector-screen-for-home-theater

Cliff Fornwalt

Thank you! I just spent 2 hours trying to find a non ALR 150" tab tensioned gray matte motorized drop-down flush mount screen and it's maddeningly difficult unless you're willing to pay $7k. I found just what I'm looking for at the link you shared and for only $1700. I'll put it in my cart and wait for your update after you get the screen. I'm in no hurry. It's interesting how so few manufacturers talk about laser speckle in their product descriptions. So many projectors are laser now. Thanks!

techmoan

I’m not sure when it’s coming, it might be two weeks or two months depending if they’re sending it from Germany or China.

Stephen Bell

Excellent video, Mat. I really do have to find a way to include a projection TV in our living room. I'd be interested to know what the connection is with IMAX?

techmoan

I really don’t know, the IMAX name has really been diluted in recent decades. It used to only refer to the kind of gigantic screen you got at Bradford that were capable of showing the large format film. Now they attach the name to ever so slightly larger than normal cinema screens running upscaled digital movies…and apparently now it’s also on projectors in a garden shed.

Richard N

A great video Matt, and a fantastic choice to keep this projector. Youtube is full of great reviews on this model and it’s certainly up there as the current flagship of home cinema projectors for its current kickstarter price. Next challenge is to find a compact 7.1 or 9.1 surround sound setup to install in your mancave without interfering with your awesome hifi setup. I guess your still using the Apple Homepods via the eARC/Apple TV to enjoy a stereo sound only?

techmoan

Thanks for that. I’ll have to try one of the listed movies now.

Stephen Bell

W-a-y back, I took my daughters to Bradford just to see the first UK IMAX, and my youngest (then about 5) was trying to catch the 3D shapes in the film "We are Made of Stars" just as you mentioned. I learned about the IMAX 70mm projection system - the mechanism is an amazing feat of engineering. I thought it a great shame when "Digital IMAX" came along, so I do agree with you. Thanks to @Richard N for that link.

Big Car

I have and I've been watching you build up your setup. It's just not for me. I'm going to build a valance similar to the one I made in the US house (see it here in my projector video that went viral ;-) : https://youtu.be/bWkj2gxKzs0?si=XH9CmEV5jaPzA2vp&t=616). It'll completely hide the screen when not in use, and I can put an LED strip behind it to make it a background light source. I'm not a fan of the big box on the floor.

techmoan

I understand that, they do take up a considerable amount of floor space.

techmoan

I do have a new surround system. I found it at half price because it was missing the remote, when/if I get the remote I’ll talk more about it.

Rick Parsons

I've never seen you so enthusiastic. I now wish I needed a projector.

Raul Ramos

It does look like a banger solution for you. Well done! For some reason, I am a little ashamed of admitting, I don't care for 3D movies. I do love a good projector though, less the faff... I got a 90 eur Panasonic second hand and I am happy with it, until I got entangled with the canvas and... Well So far from this price point

Grace Robbins

Let me guess - is the groovy projector one of those color light shows, sort of like a disco ball?

Matthew Hunt

Great to see ‘Stanley Kubrick: The Masterpiece Collection’ blu-ray boxset. I have it too — and more than 70 books about Kubrick.

Matt Tester

I know a few others have said it but it's worth saying again, you have been pleased with and extra-enthusiastic about a few products recently and it's great to see.

Mr.G

What is the sku for that tape measure?

techmoan

I think the reason 3D in the home died off is because pretty much everyone agrees with you, it’s only a few real oddballs who care about it now.

Duncan

Am I right in thinking Mat bought that tensioned screen so that he could use it with a "Short Throw" projector ? How ironic that he ends up with a projector with what looks to be the longest throw possible in his office.

Duncan

The same thing has happened with Shortwave Radios. Sony and Panasonic used to make the best consumer grade ones. I don't think either company makes them at all now and the latest ones getting good reviews have names like XHDATA and LITEMALADSP.

Duncan

They demolished the Imax that was built in Bournemouth. There again it was voted something like "The most hated building in England". I did get to see a computer 3D animation made / sponsored by Intel there which at the time was very impressive

Stephen Bell

I was living in Bournemouth at the time it was built. It was, indeed, awful beyond description. I threatened to stand for the council on behalf of the "Demolish the IMAX Party" . It was universally reviled. How on earth it got planning permission nobody knows, although guesses were made!

Grace Robbins

This video comment section contained more appreciation about a tape measure than I ever would have anticipated. 😀 It falls into the category of Cool Gadgets ( like a huge Swiss Army Knife) that we've come to expect. I wouldn't be surprised if viewers would enjoy a compilation video about stuff like this.

techmoan

Perhaps if I ever think of a third thing to show then it could make a video.

Jørn Birkeland Rosengren

Titan. 🤔 just remembered Stockton rush Titan Hope it doesn’t implode like his

Lukasz Wodzynski

Great video and as usual with your 'home theater' stuff, it makes me want to spend money that I don't have on upgrading my own setup. Also, are you still using the apple HomePods for audio or have you figured something else out?

techmoan

I'm doing something different, I'll mention it in the next update.

Raul Ramos

At the turn of the century, I had a bunch of friends which, despite completely odd backgrounds, condensate around cinema going. There where new cinemas opened in our city and one got a car. So we were an unofficial group. When 3D movies happened, one of our friends was really into trying and I went to one or two. It was not a bad experience but it didn't feel more immersive than a non 3D, yet more "complicated" if that makes any sense. But for one, I'd like to be optimistic. Some young people seem to be interested in leaving the streaming concept

Brad Jones

I've still never seen a 3D TV in action, despite own two Blu-ray players capable of reading the discs!

cbx

I wonder if it's really necessary to have such a tranceiver in the display. Practically, sure but technically you could build glasses that auto-sync to the display. It will probably never be built "commercially" but maybe some kickstarter or maker will create such glasses, if they didn't already.

Adam Gurney

Practically, it would have to be included as the TV operating system would also have to know how to handle the 3D input from your bluray player, I'm pretty sure you can't just have it receive the signal and it would know it contains frames that need to be displayed alternately. It has to know that it's receiving a 3D input and then handle it accordingly: you could send an identical signal to a passive and an active display, the former processes it to display the frames alternately and the latter simultaneously, but that it has to split them between the alternating columns in the polarised display.
