In this lesson, we’ll draw a relaxed lying cat using classic sketching techniques — from simple shapes to expressive lines and soft watercolor textures. Step by step, you’ll learn how to build the pose, define the form, and add depth with contour, highlights, and shadow to bring the character to life.

🖌️ I’m using brushes from my Sketchbook Mixed Media Brush Set for Procreate, but feel free to use any tools you like!Perfect for all levels, this tutorial is a great way to practice structure, depth, and adding organic character to your sketches.

Enjoy creating! 💛

Adorable! You make it look so simple! But I do want to say that the tutorial is helpful to see how to create the bits and pieces of the overall form of the cat. It helps me to see how to capture the overall form and then work in the details later in the process. I think I start too low level wanting to capture all the details making it difficult to get the proper scale and perspective. This tutorial was helpful. ☺️

Thank you for your wonderful feedback! Yes, when drawing any object, it is best to start with simple shapes, most often these are circles. With their help, it is easy to set the direction and size of the object. Then add individual parts also in the form of figures and only then add details. With this technique, it will be easier to draw anything.

Any chance you can post a slower longer version with more of the steps showing for the sketches?

Julia Dreams

Yes, I'm planning to make a video about sketches in a long version. 😊
