In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a beautiful national park postcard-style landscape using gouache brushes in Procreate. Together, we’ll build the illustration step by step, starting with the underpainting and base colors before gradually developing the forms, adding volume, blending colors, and refining the details.

Along the way, I’ll share tips for working with gouache brushes, creating smooth color transitions, building depth through light and shadow, and achieving a rich, painterly texture. By the end of the lesson, you’ll have a charming vintage-inspired landscape with a handcrafted feel and a decorative postcard frame that brings the entire composition together.

Before you start, don’t forget to download all the files attached to this lesson. Let’s enjoy the process together!

Hi! I have a quick question. For the color palette, do the 3rd and 4th colors in the first row appear the same as the colors shown on your screen? The palette I downloaded looks more blue-toned, while the colors in the video appear more pink-toned. I'm not sure if it's just my eyes or if there's a difference. I recently switched to a new device, so I just wanted to check whether this is expected or if it might be a display difference. Thank you!

Hi! So glad to see a comment from you. Hope you're doing well! 😊 I also included my finished work in the folder. You can check it in the folder. The colors there also appear more blue. The colors on the screen may differ because the video had some video correction. Also, when filming on an iPad, the colors in the video appear more pinkish because I changed iPads and it has a different screen than my old iPad. So, I think your colors are correct!

Lily

Okay, thank you! 😊 By the way, Julia, did you also get a new iPad? If you don't mind me asking, which model and configuration did you choose? Thanks!

Julia Dreams

Yes, of course! I bought a 13-inch iPad Pro. I previously used an iPad Pro from 2018 for 6-7 years, and I bought the same one, but newer, released in 2024. I like the size, and it's quite powerful. I don't like changing devices often, so I hope to use it for a long time. Which model did you choose? 😊

Lily

Mine was the 11-inch iPad Pro with the M1 chip, and I used it for about five years. Unfortunately, the screen died. Although it still worked with an external monitor, who would actually use an iPad like that? 😂 At first, I replaced it with the 11-inch iPad Air, but I just couldn't get used to Touch ID. On top of that, it happened to have a hardware issue, so I returned it and went back to a new iPad Pro instead.

Julia Dreams

Yes, that's an interesting idea with the extra monitor! 😊 But I understand that using an iPad through a monitor probably isn't very convenient. My old iPad turned yellow around the edges of the screen and became incredibly slow. But it worked for a long time, and I'm grateful it lasted that long!

I just downloaded the gouache set and the brushes seem different from what’s shown in the video?

Hello Mary! You might have downloaded an old version; I’ll send you a message with a link to the updated version. ☺️
