Comic #617: Up to the Hilt: Part 1 (Patreon)

Let me walk you through the minutia of my struggles on this comic.

I really wanted this to be a Narya/Miji comic, as it was a weird meta idea with potentially horrible consequences, and that's kind of their M.O. Plus, Miji being a selfish jerk and taking the glory from Narya was also part of their dynamic. It would have been a bit weird with Nyte and Gigz for example.

Anyway, given that it's Narya and Miji in the comic, this presented a new problem. Mages can use 1-hand swords. This meant the sword had to be a 2-hander for this comic to work. The problem with this being that in the cinematic Sargeras wields it with one hand.

Sometimes the best way to deal with an issue is to just acknowledge it. So I originally had some dialogue between Narya and Miji in the vertical climbing panel as follows:

Miji: Do you think the sword is a 2-hander or a 1-hander?

Narya: Did you even watch the cutscene? Sargeras holds it with 1 hand, dummy.

Miji: No, I just want loot.

I hated it. It hinted at the punchline, and it even made you think it was a 1-hander which kind of makes the final panel make no sense. So I got rid of it.

I'm sure many of you will read this and think I'm crazy. That it is not a big deal. But trust me... I WILL GET EMAILS ABOUT IT.

P.S. You may have noticed I made the border black on this comic. I thought it would be a neat idea to have story comics have a black background to make them stand out from the rest of the comics.
