The second appearance of Horace and Gretta after #92. This reminds me that it's been a really long time since we've seen either of these two. Maybe I should bring them back.

Usually older comics that include specific game mechanics lose their meaning over time, but nearly 14 years later and this one still makes sense!

Reading this comic made me realize how often I used to vary the width of my comics. Looking at the various strips at this period it seems as if half of them are 3-panels wide, and half are 2-panels wide. My old site design was basically just an image in the middle of the page, so I didn't need to worry about the dimensions of the comic at all. It was also before smartphones. It seems to have become more standard somewhere around #315 when I added titles to the comic images.

I like the final dialogue from Keydar, but I think if I had made this comic today I would have cut Keydar's text and just kept Krom's. Probably would have been a tight close-up on Krom's face with Gretta and Horace visible in the background. I'm pretty torn on which way is better. What do you all think?

I think I like it better with Keydar's line. It shows that it's just a game to them, and keeps it from getting too dark. The contrast between serious business for the NPCs and fun times for the PCs makes it funny.

There were a lot of sideline plots with NPCs back then. I recall Gretta later convincing Keydar to become a pacifist by throwing statistics at him, and I also recall a plotline where Gretta and Horace lead a NPC uprising by refusing to fix damaged gear, so PCs couldn't keep killing NPCs any longer... Today the comics focuses more on mocking gameplay mechanics.
