Comic #844: Dragon Rider (Patreon)

For my non-active/non-retail readers, there are flags on the tops of mountains that can be collected, and landing on the peak with a dragon mount can be... challenging. The dragon mounts can't hover in mid air like normal flying mounts, so you end up spiraling like an insane moth.

I had this idea written down for several weeks now, but couldn't think of a good enough lead-up. Here is my original note:

"Dragonriding can’t hover, someone says it's better than regular flying in every way (final panel spinning around a stationary flyer)"

You can see the original idea involved a conversation between players about which type of flying is better. In the end I came up with an idea with much less dialogue.

Another problem I had at the start of the process was with what dialogue to use in the panels. Originally the dialogue in the first two panels were Keydar's internal dialogue about how cool he was, and in the final panel he was cursing over and over. I couldn't figure out how to have him curse over and over effectively in an animated panel. I didn't want the chat box to follow him around, and I knew the dialogue would have to be on a loop and might look funky.

In the end the idea of having dialogue in all three panels that were thematically connected (I am). The first two would be serious and self-aggrandizing, the final would be funny and self-deprecating.
