...and kinda finding it again.

Kinda.

If you've been on any of the webchats in the past month then you've probably heard me talk about this already, but this is the story in as complete and concise as way as i can manage. HOPEFULLY, this will reach someone who needs it someday. Thanks, everyone!

PS This is gonna be going out in the next few days. ✌️

Thanks for making and sharing this video, Geoff. I’m sure this will help folks the same way Kathy’s story did. 💕

Beth Comer

Thank you for being so open about your hearing loss- you and Kathy both, honestly. I think your willingness to talk about these issues, and the kindness you demonstrate through choosing not to keep this private will certainly help others who find themselves facing similar challenges.

Doyne

Great summary! Glad this reached the top of your list. Glad that you are better and hoping for continued improvement

Rev Jessie

Thank you for sharing your journey with us. So thankful that you are recovering.

Cloudy Skies

Geoff, thanks for sharing your story. The importance of being your own advocate cannot be overstated. I am glad that you persisted and got the help you needed. It's so good that your hearing has improved; I hope it continues.

Sue Armstrong

Man, what a summer you've had! I've been following your ordeal in the chats, so it's good to hear that your hearing is holding steady! Fingers crossed the annoying noises recede again, and the little man with the martini glass stays away! ❤️

Cynthia Ross

I am a “medically interesting” person myself, and I detest it. The worst part of that is when the doctors don’t know what’s going on and just blow it off or minimize the issue like they tried to do to you. I spent the better part of a decade trying to get one to listen to me and I now have permanent disabilities from that issue. It’s likely my lifespan has been shortened too. Your condition sounds like a nightmare for anyone, but double down on the nightmare for a professional musician. I’m so very glad you were smart enough to do your own research and stubborn enough to insist on someone follow up. I’m crossing the fingers and sending you all the vibes possible for an amazing recovery for you! 🫶🫶🫶🫶

Really excellent video. Clear, engaging, and informative. Hope it reaches people who need this info and is a help to them. I can only imagine how scary an experience like this must be, especially when it's so directly tied to your livelihood. Hope you are doing well, and I wish the best for you going forward. We're here to support you in the small ways we can. 🫶

Robin McMullen

Glad to hear the full story, Geoff. Sending every good wish. Your work is amazing. I'm a huge fan.

Karen & Lauren

Two months without caffeine? Please be careful. I did a sudden stop on caffeine at one point...it was not good.... your body could, and likely will, crash from it. If you want to cut it out, you should taper off . Otherwise, thank you for sharing your story. Be safe. We're not going anywhere any time soon.

ZAYRAY!

Too early to make puns? Sounds very Ear-itating

Delila Hall

🙏🙏 for you. You are such a creative talent. I hope you have many more years of music. Thanks for the video filling us in on what’s been happening.

Karen & Lauren

Wait. Did he not make that pun himself in the video?

Karen Grace

That's a scary thing to go through when you depend so much on your hearing. I hope it improves more.

Patricia Schuman

Thank you so much for filming this video! I don't doubt that there will be people helped by this. Maybe not immediately , but sometime, somewhere there will be someone whose friend mentions to him or her some strange things going on with their hearing, and they will take it seriously and get help as soon as they can when their friend explains that this is a serious condition that requires immediate diagnosis and treatment. One final note, I'm sure you always try to make sure your closed captions are accurate, the auto generated ones provided by Patreon were a little wonky (couldn't quite decipher Flonase, the official diagnosis and eustachian tubes, etc.). You probably want to run a check on the YouTube captions or supply on screen captions?

Miran Tideturner

Thank you for being so open about this. I'm so relieved you were able to advocate for yourself and get what looks like the best treatment for your case. I'll keep all available body parts crossed for further improvement! As someone living with permanent tinnitus in both ears after having missed the "best chance for recovery" window for a variety of reasons (conflict aversion re: self-advocacy, financial strain, lack of knowledge, prednisone effectiveness being in doubt in my country) as well as not being lucky enough to recover (much) without treatment, my heart goes out to anyone having to deal with similiar issues. I'm certain your advice and experience will truly help others!

B Sprak

Geoff, I hope you heal quickly or at least stabilize so you don't need to feel like you can't count on the ground beneath your feet. Thank you for making this video. It will be valuable to anyone going through this now and may very well save their hearing. Bless you for being so open. It can't be easy.❤️

Gail R.

I hope improvements continue, Geoff. Thank you so much for sharing. I had never heard of this. Even if no one who sees it ever experiences this particular health issue, there is an extremely important message for everyone. You MUST advocate for yourself. Be polite but utterly relentless. Firstly, doctors cannot possibly know everything - even in their own specialties. Secondly, many of them are over-worked, which leads to errors. Thirdly, our health care system is designed to have patients act like sheep. Even if one has an assertive personality, self-advocacy is hard when one isn't feeling well. It's even harder if you're naturally more inclined to just accept what you're told and fret about it later. If possible, have someone in your life who is willing to be your advocate in medical settings.

Tonia Richardson

Thanks for sharing this journey with us, Geoff. Blessings to you and your family. 💜🐦‍🔥💜

Miran Tideturner

Good advice! Although I think after 2 months he's already found out if there were any withdrawal issues (unless there are some very late-onset ones I'm not aware of, which might well be). Or he was wise enough to not go cold turkey. Yeah, caffeine is one of the things that CAN affect tinnitus and hypersensitivity so I'm not too surprised he's cutting it out - still it'll take a while to adjust to the thought of Geoff without coffee!

Hector Solana

My deepest admiration to you, Geoff... Thank you for sharing in an effort to make the best out of it, even if it is for somebody else! I know you will improve because, well... There is still a lot of good in the world. All the best for you and your family! Love and prayers from Mexico.

Karen & Lauren

It actually was about 8 months before I crashed. (Tbh, I had been drinking Mountain Dew like it was water.) But, I crashed HARD. Like, couldn't even drive more than a couple minutes without nearly nodding off.

Marie DesJardin

Oh, Geoff. My heart goes out to you. Here's hoping your ringing calms down and you get normal hearing soon. Hugs to you and Kathy

Daniel Anderson

Thanks for letting everyone know Geoff. We all wish you are doing well and thank you for all you do as always. Thank goodness you got it checked out as soon as you did😊! I also liked how you panned and did other stuff to your advantage with examples. Sorry, I'm writing this comment as soon as I hit play and I'm still watching in the meantime. Oh yes, also happy early birthday Geoff. Huge fan of your work Geoff, and take your time with everything. 😊

Latte Lover

Thank you for sharing this, Geoff. Being an advocate for oneself is good advice for lots and lots of medical situations. Best wishes for your future - and Happy (almost here) Birthday!

Lynn M

Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

Ilona Dever

As we all knew, Geoff is very special! Thanx for the information, you are a prince among men!! I did miss the dinosaurs...

Mikki Fullerton

Hopefully sharing your story will help some others that need it! I know hearing those kinds of symptoms described by a friend would now certainly create a stronger sense of urgency in me because of your story!

Arlene Jacobs

Thanks Geoff!! Hope you continue to improve!!

Manasi Kane

I appreciate so much how open you (and Kathy) have been about these topics that could be considered sensitive and secretive by several folks going through them ❤️ So glad that you were able to act quickly , advocate for yourself and have seen improvement ! Here’s hoping it continues to get better and that the future only involves happy experiences ! Thank you for telling your story (albeit without the friendly dino🤣)

Bill

Thanks for sharing!! It's similar to what I shared except the tinnitus is a little different. Aural fullness and loss of frequency, check ✅ Haven't done research into yours but mine might be autoimmune related. Hit me with no warning for the first time at age 38. It's like watching you narrate my story, even the left ear being hit first✅. Hyperacusis✅ Audiogram ✅. Tympanic shots ✅ gave me mixed results and I have Menieres so I'm hoping you don't have to go through that series. Big praise for the hyperbaric treatments!! 🙏🙏 No caffeine ✅ Low sodium?? Pay attention to what you take in, like caffeine, when it levels up the symptoms. You and Kathy have my prayers!!

Tina Wolf

Thanks for being so sincere about your hearing loss. It took a lot of courage to talk about it. Hope u get full hearing back 🙏 Wish you the best ❤️

Silv E

You're so wonderful to take the time out of your busy schedule to share this story, G. And I'm really sorry to hear it's bothering you more again. Sending healing vibes your way. (Btw, you made me curse my earbuds at the beginning there :D)

Jill Weimer Koeninger 🐉

Thank you for the in depth information. You seem to find the right words to explain what the symptoms are and in this way, we will be better advocates for ourselves should this happen to any of us. Continued prayers 🙏🏻 for more healing. God is the great Healer.

Hunter

Glad to hear the full story with all of the pieces. Two months without cafeine. That's gotta hurt. But I completey understand the reasoning behind it. I'll drink coffee for you, if that helps. All the hearing thoughts- I mean, Healing thoughts. (Sorry. the little man with the martini glass made me do it!) Best of luck Geoff!

Susana

Hola Geoff, thank you for sharing it with everyone. You are such a kind man and are always thinking of us. we know it must be so hard for someone like you who works with music. We all wish the best for you and your beautiful family. 😊

Crazy CatLady

I am sorry you are going through this. Thank you for sharing Your and Kathy's hearing loss journeys. I discovered your music in 2023 and your first hearing loss video helped me feel so much hess alone as I started my own journey. Your videos have meant so much to me. I hope for your continued healing, and to both of you all my best wishes

Marie Galaxy

Thank you so much for all this information. Even the slightest hearing loss is nothing to trifle with. Very happy you’ve had the promising results thanks to your vigilance. Kudos for giving up caffeine and alcohol! Neither of those substances have ever meant good health for anyone. Hoping you have continued blessings for improvement. 💜💚

V.E. Griffith

Aside from my love of your work, I really like ... you. (Parasocial relationships are bad.) But I can only wish you healing.

Rachel P.

Sending you well wishes! Yes, unfortunately, in our healthcare system, we're on our own to advocate for ourselves and our loved ones. I have worked in healthcare for 25 years and healthcare education for 13+ years, and created a patient advocacy course in my curriculum specifically because of frustration with how patients are shuffled and ignored in so many cases, or treated like a number or a diagnosis instead of a human in need of help. Also, my partner has both regular tinnitus & pulsatile tinnitus, and has now lost hearing entirely in his right ear, so I can certainly empathize. Wishing you, Kathy, William, and Tommy all the best!!

Helen D

Thank you for sharing your story. Inam sure it will help someone else whi needs it. It can't be easy working around this when music is your life. Let's hope the annoying sounds go away again and your hearing continues to improve. 😊

Talbot

Always be stubborn and ready to stand up to doctors. I'm sorry this happened to you (and Kathy.)

Tabitha Chonka-Michaud

Thanks for sharing this. I get the whole "be your own advocate". I had a rare & aggressive cancer 5 years ago that presented as a simple cyst. (Got it in time, completely removed). Now I'm always telling my friends, "See something, say something". Or in your case, "Hear something, say something". I hope you continue to improve and hey, Happy early Birthday! 💙

Marna Brown

I am SO very happy to hear these 2 reports!!! Been praying like crazy for you. I have tinnitus that comes and goes, thankfully, it surely does become so irritating as y'all who have it know. I quit all alcohol a dbl+ bc it seems I have inherited my dad's kidney disease 🙄, and quit caffeine. I don't eat meat, except the occasional slow chicken. I have noticed that high salt things do affect it and it flares up. I am researching vitamins, minerals etc, old wives tales and anything I find out. I'll be happy to give you a holler if/when I learn something. Once again I am sooooooo (y'all all thought I was gonna say 'soon', didn't ya!) happy you are doing better. You have a myriad of symptoms going on all of which individually have the capability of driving a person right off the cliff, and you are doing better!! Im gonna keep on praying, He knows I don't never give up until I get what He has promised! See you soon! 🤣 😆 💕 💕

Marna Brown

My gosh! I can't believe I never thought of autoimmune and I have 2 autoimmune disorders. My onset was in my mid-30s too. I know for a fact red meat and processed foods affect one of mine. Hope you are doing well❣️

KorKnot

Thanks for making this video, you're very kind to do so. I'm glad you're hearing is where it is now; hopefully things will drastically improve quickly. 🙏💓

Jen

Thank you for sharing this. I really hope you're able to get the sleep you need. Just make sure you're putting you and your families health first. Like I've said before. The world can just wait. And we will wait. Don't forget to breathe.

Åse M Bruun Lagnestål

Thank you for sharing your story. ❤️ My experience is that some doctors want to prove you wrong when you think you know the diagnosis and they don’t. 🫣 So it can be very hard to be your own advocate, at least where I live. 🇸🇪

Angie Woollard

So sorry this happened to you but glad to hear it’s improved! This has been word for word, symptom for symptom my story as well, which happened to me July 31, 2017, so you (and anyone reading this comment!) do, in fact, know someone else this has happened to! I completely understand what you’re going through. ❤️

Debs Badger

I am glad to better understand what you've been dealing with, and very much appreciate your willingness to share your experience with everyone. And while I'm very sorry you're going through it, it is good to hear there has been improvement. I hope you continue to do so.

Tine

Thank you for sharing, Geoff! I am glad you were able to advocate for yourself so well and that your ENT was more aware of what it was and could help you better. It sounds like an very challenging journey to go through, I wish you the best of luck and hope you can continue to see improvement without too much of invasive treatments.

Cécile Roussey

It’s outrageous that doctors are minimizing people’s problems like he did for you. Thank you for this video, even though I don’t understand it. I use other people’s comments to better understand, in short, since I forgot all about English because I was seriously ill... that’s why I reverso, automatic translator in writing... Your video can help people who are experiencing the same problem as you, or even other problems... When you talk about Tommy, it reminds me of something... due to my syndrome, I shouted and it did the same thing to my parents as you did... even an iron tray vibrated 1 meter away from me when I screamed... I have Gilles de la Tourette syndrome... but fortunately, My parents didn’t have any hearing loss, but just hurt one of their ears for quite a while... I want you to regain all your hearing abilities... and that you no longer have hearing loss... I cross my fingers while touching wood... ;-)

Melisendre

Some members of my family had this and in case of my father he slowly lost his hearings. When I was in emotional stress I also had it and because I knew what it could be I immediatly went to a specialist. Luckily my hearings came back and it caused no longterm damage. I wish you the very best for your recovery and that everything will be fine again.

Durga Dasi Dorthe Rasmussen

A big hug for you and your dog. I put you in our box og OMChanting and Prayer for the world. Without any expectations.and thank you for sharing so others be aware 🙏🪷👣🐘

Karin Wolf

Phewww... hoping for the best. Thanks.

Tema Krempley

Thank you for sharing. This will reach the people who need it. I'm sure of it!

ChazyUK

Thank you Geoff 😊 I am sure this will help folk who may experience this 👍😊

Maria Rydström

Thank you Geoff for sharing this video. I’m so sorry for everything you have been going thru but happy that you have recovered as much as you have done.Wish you all the best💕

Jeanette Pencz

Thank you Geoff for making and sharing this video. Fingers, toes and tentacles crossed that your improvement continues. Sending you good healing wishes 🤗

Sigrid Verlaan

good to hear you are getting better!

Emma Yadkin

Thanks for promoting advocating for one's health. Medical professionals have a lot of knowledge, but no one knows how you're feeling like you do.

Jennifer L. Cramp

I stopped drinking regular coffee during my radiation and chemo treatments in 2018 ( aggressive stage 3 oral cancer). I was already so very sick from the treatments I didnt even notice the caffeine withdrawal. I stopped coffee because the caffeine causes problems with my heart, so I can only handle a little from some chocolate and I have the occasional decaf coffee and only herbal teas. Its not quite as good as regular, but I splurge in the best quality decaf I can afford and its not too bad. Thank for sharing your journey so far, and I hope things continue to improve for you. Sudden illness can have a massive impact on your life. Sharing helps you process what has happened. It may also yield new solutions. We are grateful for all you do for us. May Jehovah bless you, Kathy, William, Tommie, and your family.

Margaret Tassey

Everyone has to advocate for themselves. Doctors used to be mostly self-employed professionals providing healthcare. For the most part now, they are employees of a medical business providing profits for its shareholders. The doctors themselves can be well meaning but the system is not. Hoping for the best for you. Sounds like your wife is a great support.,

Kelli Arrington

Hello Geoff, As a long time professional surgical Nurse, I just have to ask the question of why the tinnitus is going back up? It may be well worth having a neurology consult to do an electrical auditory nerve conduction study or Cat Scan to rule out formations of cysts/nodules/infection on the nerve. Given your type of work, there may be a type of infection that has begun from wearing headphones extended periods which creates too much humidity in the ear canal which the fungal organism take advantage of. Since steroids are proving effective for inflammation then what would cause tinnitus to go back up? You are well to be your own advocate!!!! Best to you Kelli

Constance Christensen

I hope it improves soon. I have had tinnitus and know what you are going through.

Veronica Thunander

I hope so much that you will recover fully! And that those horrible noices give up and leave you alone! Thank you for sharing!

Crisstina Joubert

THANK YOU for sharing your nightmare experience with SSNHL, so very glad you’ve had so much improvement!! Imagine if everyone was as thoughtful as you are to map out the ins and outs of their health journey to help others!!❤️🍀

Lori Templeman

Thanks for sharing your experience with this. Your explanation was very clear and just technical enough, without getting lost in the medical jargon. Some of your first doctor visits seemed to be a product of the medical training "think horses, not zebras" in diagnosing a patient's issue(s). I'm glad you were able to get in to see two different ENTs on such short notice--I've had to wait months to get in to see an ENT before, and I'm in Southern California suburbia, which is hardly a medical desert. Being your own health advocate is becoming more and more essential these days. I hope your hearing continues to improve!

AmbularD

Thank you for sharing your experience, Geoff. Fingers crossed that your symptoms soon subside again and your recovery gets back on track.

Christine

Wishing you all the best for a full recovery. Thank you for your very informative video; its so important to trust your instincts. So glad to know that your hearing loss hasn't affected your singing. The world needs your beautiful voice!

Diane Holland

I want to thank you for creating this video and Kathy's. As a person with hearing loss, I have learned a lot from both videos. I hope you continue to update us with more videos as time goes on.

Sarah Borzelli

Geoff, you are an angel for making this video and sharing it with the world out there. Hopefully this will reach all the people who need it. I'm sorry you had to go through all this and now it's good to hear that it has improved so much. I send you lots and lots of healing thoughts. Be well ❤️ Oh and I'd like to mention the way you've made this a tangible experience for all of us is impressive and very valuable.

Shirli Walker

Thank you for sharing Geoff. We are all so pleased you’re on the road to recovery. I hope the video will help someone who has it. All love from UK❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️

Chris Gregory

I’ve had some hearing loss in my left ear and permanent tinnitus since 2020, caused by acoustic trauma during the soundcheck of a concert, before I’d had a chance to put my ear protection in. I don’t know what the sound engineer did, but the speaker, which was about a meter to my left, suddenly blasted an extremely loud sound, and it’s been ringing ever since. It’s not exactly fun.

Debbie Jensen

🌟❤️ YES!- you Have to be your own advocate, especially if you don't fit the normal criteria. Thank goodness you & Kathy followed your gut & did you're own research. I'm sending all my best to you! It was your story about Kathy that first led me to follow you & VoicePlay My grandparents were each deaf from childhood illnesses that are preventable now.

Shirley27

Your music was the reason we came to know you. Your concern for your fellow humans by sharing your and Kathy’s story just makes us like you more. And I thank you for that. For a musician hearing lose is one of the scariest things that can happen. I’m glad yours is recovering. I’m hoping to be listening to you sing for years to come.

𝕸𝖊𝖑𝖆𝖓𝖎𝖊 ♡ 𝕵𝖚𝖑𝖎𝖆 𝕾

Thank you so much for this video! I hope it helps people who are going through the same thing right now. Two years ago, I had exactly the same symptoms you describe, also in my left ear. It took a very long time for everything to heal completely, and even today I sometimes notice that things aren’t quite the same as they used to be. But the tinnitus is gone, and I’m grateful for that. Since hearing loss is twice as bad for a musician, I’m really glad to hear that you’re feeling better. I hope everything turns out for the best!❣️

Dru Freeman

I’ve been hoping for you since you first announced it occuring. As my spouse as far as I can tell is the same amount of loss in theirs as Kathy does. I’m also of an age were I’ve gained an idiopathic problem myself that required surgery. I have lost the high end in one ear and have constant tinnitus in both ears. There are assuredly times that the guy with a triangle that has infinite sustain. As I’m working on learning and arranging for a cappella; I truly understand my hearing limitations and truly wish that yours goes into remission. Your music is truly amazing.

Becky

Thank you for sharing your diagnosis and journey – someone, somewhere may need to hear this to preserve their hearing. Advocating for yourself to medical professionals can be stressful and seem confrontational. It is essential and the support of loved ones is always an advantage

Stacey V.

Thanks Geoff, for posting this video. I am sure it will help a lot of people understand this kind of hearing loss. My Grandmother had something like this happen to her. She lossed all her hearing in one ears for the rest of her life. I remember her describing how it dissapeared so quickly. She said that on day when she woke up she could hear and then in the afternoon there was a high piched noise and then she couldn't hear any more. Of course back then they didnt do much about it . They just told he sorry You'll just have to live with it there is nothing we can do for you. Thankfully there a treatments that can help and people like you that are willing to share their experience out there so people know what to do if it should happen to them. Thank you for being a kind person and helping others like that. Both You and Kathy are great about that ! ❤️

Steven Tipert

Did you hit new low notes before your hearing loss?

Scott Knuth

Hey Geoff, I just saw this. I know EXACTLY what you're going through. I had the same problem. I was the bass for a quartet for years and therefore, always the one next to the speakers on stage (remember before wedges? Lol). Anyway, the tinnitus, fullness, everything you're describing happened to me around 30, and I couldn't pass any of the hearing tests to get into the Police Academy because I couldn't hear the high pitches. I hope you've read this far because it turns out that I had a fused stapes. The tiny bone in my middle ear wasn't vibrating fast enough anymore to pick up the high pitch sounds. I had a surgery called a Stapendectomy (basically a replacement) and my hearing is perfect again. I was under an anesthesiologist's watch but awake through the whole process. The recovery was a little rocky due to them invading the middle ear, but that only lasted about 7-10 days and now I'm hearing things I didn't even know I was missing and the surgery was 11 years ago. It's not something that ENT's generally think about because of the rarity I'm told, but it might be something you ask about if the problem hasn't solved itself. Like I said, my hearing is perfect again and if I had the same thing happen in my left ear I would do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you get this message and I hope it helps.

Amanda Yarbro

Thanks for sharing! I know you must have been frustrating not getting correct answers sooner, I had that with a different medical condition.
