Good evening everyone! Who's ready to spend some time down in the mine with me?

There's nothing quite like the smell of coal dust, sweat, and fear to make you really enjoy singing bass am I right?

Tennessee Ernie Ford's, "Sixteen Tons", is one of those songs I'd sung over and over again a million years ago and then thought I'd put away forever BUT I should have known better, because in the age of the internet, nothing is really ever gone... it just takes a brief vacation and then comes back with a HEY THERE REMEMBER ME!?

Yup, I sure do. I missed you, too.

I was amused to see more and more people on the ol' internets ask me to sing "Sixteen Tons" and the more I thought about it, the more sense it made. I mean, who better to breathe life into one of the most classically manly songs ever written than a long haired, androgynous, skinny,  girlie man like yours truly.

So I rolled up my sleeves, gathered my oldest, rustiest, pick axes, and got to work. I hope you enjoy the results of the effort, and as always, THANK YOU for your support, encouragement, and generosity. I couldn't do it without you.

Enjoy the video!

Jessica

Awesome job Geoff that was amazing. Love your voice

Katie D

Oh my God, that was insanely good! This is one of those songs I've heard all my life, but never REALLY listened to. Now it's going into my favorites! 😊 I now understand why so many people were asking you to do this song, your voice is perfectly suited for it 💕 Also, loved the little Surprise!Eli at the end 😁

Gretchen G

Perfect! I love this!

Tylor Paulson

I have waited to hear you sing this and let me say man you killed it! This was awesome!

Olivia

I didn’t know I liked sledgehammer percussion before this. I feel enlightened.

Amber Scott

This was amazing! I had my jaw on the floor for the entire song. Even though I'm expecting the bass notes I'm caught unawares every time, you're too good, mate!

Julia Cable

Oh my lord! Geoff this was wonderful! Loved Eli at the end. Other than all the sexy comments I could make I'd like you to know, my mom taught me all these great "old" songs. Hearing this one again was like visiting with her. I lost her almost 3 years ago. Thank you for the connection. I appreciate your talent. You do more than you know sometimes, ya know? Thanks

Tracie Schlaak

This certainly was unique, interesting and fun. 😊❤️

Sydnie Ledbetter

I've got to know, Were those tools just laying around your parents house too? Lol

Lourdes Sanz

Amazing! Loved the arrangement! Loved scenery / staging!! Loved your performance!! Loved the bass singing as well as the acompaniment!! Loved everything!! You are sooooo talented!! I am so proud to be part of your Patreon!! Thanks for your art!

Amanda W

It's so, so, so good! He looks just as good.

Helen A

Eek! I LOOOOOVE this! I've known the original since listening to my dad's old record collection as a kid and had been really eager to find out how you would change it up, but I never anticipated a Swing beat. So cool! And the hard rock mining 'instruments' were genius. 🥰

Jamie T.

Geez, I thought I'd prepared myself this time but no, my jaw still hit the floor! I don't know if it's just me but I love how Geoff somehow manages to make four images of himself actually seem like different people with the way they interact with each other; almost like identical quadruplets singing together. This was just amazing & well worth the wait! Love Eli popping in at the end too. And now I'm wondering where they were shooting today because that building was beautiful.

Tess

I did not realize I knew this song until now, but I remember my dad singing it when I was very little!! Wonderful job, as always.

Arlene Jacobs

Wow!! Now that I dragged myself off of the floor....what an incredible cover!! And loved Eli’s cameo!!

Tara Congo

I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!! Amazing job, as always. :) I'm off to listen a dozen more times.

Kim Taylor

Awesome rendition! I am so impressed with how much life you brought to this old song! Your creativity and talent always amazes me. I’m so happy to support your creations. Thank you for sharing your talents with all of us! ❤️⛏

Christina Dowdican

WOW!! I KNEW it would be amazing but it blew me away!!! I have loved this song for most of my 63 years. You did an amzing job with this, I know that if T E F was still here he would love it too. You breathed new life into an old song but still kept it true to the original. 😊❤️. Cant wait to see what else you have up yoyr sleeves for us. Now back to the video😊😄❤️

Elizabeth Ratzlaff

Oh, my gosh!!!! Fabulous Geoff!! That just blew me away!!! There are just not enough adjustives to describe the impact the song & your voice has!! Talk about a perfect pairing!!!! WOW!!

Katherine (Ducky)

I'd like it a million times in a row if I could. Love it! You're amazing.

Julie Hobson

That was amazing !!! I love it. That was a song my dad used to play. Nicely done. Worth the wait!!!❤❤❤

Ashley Gatewood

Wow, wow, and lastly, WOW! Incredible as always. You never cease to amaze me!

Hana Keindlová

I know it will be flooded here with comments and I apologize in advance that mine will be long, very long, but I am like that, I am sometimes (often) a little too much emotional. I love 16 tons since my chidhood. I couldn't even understand a word yet, as English is my second language, but I felt in love with the mood, the melody, how intense was the song itself. And since the time I found you some months ago I couldn't stop thinking about how it would sound if you did the song. I was one of those folks to suggest you to did it. That's why I got so excited with every tease you gave us, hoping, wishing and yeah, I did a little happy dance when you announced it oficially. And here we go. I had to give it three listens in a row to absorb it all. I am not ashamed to confess I got teary eyes, my tiny little wish came true as for so many people here. You have amazing talent for arranging songs, it's incredible. You use every second of the song to make it sounds amazing. It has the energy that made me fell in love with the song years ago. It has even more, it has your signature now. Saying I love it would be a misunderstanding, I use that word too often to express my emotions right now. I feel so happy I haven't felt for weeks. Thank you Geoff, and I really, really mean it. You made my heart thrilled, my inner child excited and my soul healed from the missery I felt for those past days. Am I using big words? Yep, I do. Do I mean it? Yep, every single one of them. I adore the video itself, I simply had to say that as well. I could go on and on, but I shouldn't. You made me giggle with the comment up there, once again. And especialy Eli at the end was what I needed, I laughed heartily, what a genius touch to end the video. "better step aside" made me grin with satisfaction, my favourite part. Sigh... Don't mind me, I am going to put myself to sleep with this gem, my now absolute favourite. Thank you. In every meaning of those words. You made my life better again. ❤️

Cynthia Ross

Firstly, re: “androgynous, skinny,  girlie man”.... shaddup. You are none of the above. 😊 Secondly...I love what you did to this. It’s a top to bottom improvement all the way through. It sounds like you pulled in a bit of a gospel sound somehow - which is extremely appropriate for the Appalachian region where the story in this song played out for hundreds of thousands of coal miners. I can’t wait for this to go live to share in my Appalachian groups. I think they’re gonna dig this big time. I love what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. Please keep right on keeping on. 🥰

Hana Keindlová

I definitely have ❤️ I can't wait for it to be public, to see all the reactions. My dream came true ❤️

Stacey Post

My dad used to sing this around the house all the time when I was growing up. When I was a kid, I found it a really annoying, embarrassing habit. Ever since he passed, I've wished that I could hear him one more time. I think he would have loved this, and I can almost hear his spirit, walking around my house and singing this now. Thank you for that. Also . . . "skinny, androgynous, girlie man"? No one trash-talks my favorite singer, sir, not even my favorite singer. Stop that. 😉

Ge GP

You make my day! Thank you!

Olivia

The only thing accurate in that description is the “long haired” part.

Cynthia Ross

You’re not wrong. He walks down a chord there the same way they do in Hit The Road. The original had a similar walking bass line throughout, but at a different tempo so it didn’t summon shades of Hit The Road the way this one does. And it was much more in the background for the most part. Like, you don’t even really hear it behind the singer if you are t trying to.

Cynthia Ross

I’m beginning to think we all need to flirt harder or something. Not that we’d get anywhere, but just to shut him up on those sort of comments.

Tara Congo

Oh whoops, I deleted that part of my original comment because I was totally second-guessing, haha. I'm glad I wasn't completely crazy! I love Hit the Road Jack too, so it was fun to hear that walkdown.

Debs Badger

I doubt that it's possible to shut him up on those, Thea. He's naturally self-deprecating.

Stacey Post

If he hasn't picked up on all the women (and some men) slavering after him by now, I think he's permanently oblivious.

Cynthia Ross

I know. He’s too dang hard on himself. But that’s also probably the sam personality trait that got him so good at doing what he does.

Cindy Barber

OMG that was AMAZING! I was dancing in my chair listening to that. Geoff, PHENOMENAL job!!! Brings back so many memories from my dad singing that when I was young and totally made my Monday. I am so happy to have helped, even a little, in bringing that into the world! And now to go listen to it about 18 million more times. 😆 THANK YOU....and I can't even begin to express all my thoughts on this.

Alaethea (Ali)

I suggest a shock collar/bracelet where he gets a zap every time he says something self deprecating. Or maybe Kathy could just pinch him. Ooh, no, I know- only give him coffee when he's nice to himself.

Rio

I'm thoroughly surprised that every single time your covers surprise me and are better than I could've ever expected... I truly mean it, that's insane. So much creativity, passion and attention to detail and also the fact that you've wonderfully mastered the implementation of your clones by now. I hope those three additional mouths to feed don't empty your whole fridge, but you gotta have those talented fellas well fed, they did so great again! 😄 Aside from the obviously marvelous singing and arrangement, the sledge hammer percussion is genius as well as the whole video concept and production. So seemingly simple, yet detailed, flawless and precise, I really have to compliment that in particular, cause that's what I like about your and VP's music videos so much. The seeming simplicity, but with actually so much thought, detail and creativity behind it. You seem like the kind of person that just keeps on perfecting and improving beyond all measure and limits, while always staying grounded, which is something I highly respect. Even though I'm not musically talented, I consider you for those qualities a role model. Kinda longer feedback, I apologize, but I hope it somehow is valuable during these times where getting live feedback from an audience is impossible. As always: Thank you for sharing your amazing (art)work with the world and therefore making many people's days so much brighter. And to see a surprise-Eli at the end was really adorable!! 😆💙

Cindy Barber

"You do more than you know sometimes, ya know?" You summed up perfectly in that line so much of what I feel but couldn't figure out how to say! 😊❤

Amanda Yarbro

"Firstly, re: “androgynous, skinny, girlie man”.... shaddup. You are none of the above. " I agree!!

Amanda Yarbro

That was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! Can't wait to get my mp3 and ad it to the iPod! Also, you have piqued my interest as to what you've been doing with Voice Play.....

Ben McAdam

Love it! One of my favourite songs at choir, that I haven't been able to sing for ages because of covid. Thanks! 😍

Jessie

So much Yes! This helped brighten my shift. THANK YOU!!

Hobbs Family

☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️Thank you for that Geoff!

Julia B

Oh, that was astonishing! Thank you, maestro!

Hobbs Family

Seriously though! That was awesome. That was definitely MORE! Your attention to character was intriguing, the harmonies sweet, and the bass just .... dropped. Keep knockin’ those boundaries back!!

D McKim

You did Merle Travis proud, I was a little suspicious when I first saw the title. Silly of me, clearly I am eating crow now.

Sophie Plourde

This was awesome!!! I loved the vocals and the intense drum track, so brilliant. I watched this at work and was trying to keep it together in the breakroom every time you did something amazing ( every 2 seconds lol) 😂

Jennifer

This is freaking awesome!

Janet Towles

That was awesome! I love how smooth the background vocals were, and how well the sledgehammer percussion contrasted with it. Also, loved the accompaniment, did you generate that or hire that or how did that happen? Loved everything so much, couldn’t help myself, started clapping at the end! 👏👏

Nakeyae Street

1. I am laying on floor, Geoff knocked me out. 2. While I would love to comment...it wouldn't be PG-13 😋😜

Stacey Post

Okay, I have the final word on this. My 12-year-old, Quinlan, says, "Dude is definitely manly. Especially that voice. So intimidating." So there.

Åse M Bruun Lagnestål

Hey Geoff, I think that one is a gold mine and boy, does it shine! 🥰👍🎶🥇🏆🌟

Cindy Jones

Oh My God..... But, first off... Yes Eli.. That was was special 😉 Geoff I love everything you do. But man.... This one's special. I'm 58 and I remember playing the 45 record of this over and over again. 😊 Thanks

Alex King

You're the God of self-trolling.

Olivia

Surprisingly accurate.

Nessie Morris

So fun and awesome arrangement!! Eli at the end was a nice surprise 😆

Elaine Lyon

Oh wow. I haven't heard this in so long 💕💕 Absolutely amazing version. I was bopping and snapping along. Thank you for this, put a huge smile on my face 😊💕💕

Tara Congo

Just had to comment again because... man, you really make every cover entirely your own, don't you? Your creativity is wild. I've listened to this several times over now and notice something else awesome every time. You're consistently ridiculous in all the best ways.

Talamyan

Love the selfie of the selfie at the end lmao

Runa Reinert

Yes Eli seems very cool and fun

Sunniva Melhuus

OMG. I'm shook. The arrangement, the singing, the interactions between Geoff, Gioff, Gaoff, and Göoff, the editing, the percussions and camera effects, everything, it's all so incredibly fantastic and it made me so very happy. And as much as I appreciate the skinny, androgynous, girlie men of this world, those Geoffs are neither. Mate, have you looked at your arms lately? As the daughter of an old silver miner, I approve of this video 😎

Runa Reinert

Monday is Monday :) Great work as always, it was a fresh fun take on a classic. Listened now a couple of times and enjoy it more every time. I knew the song, not by name, but I have heard it often, maybe on the radio

D McKim

I am most impressed with the catchy feeling of the song, before it always seemed bleak to me. So there is a song by Solomon King, called She Wears My Ring. It really needs some love, the original arrangement is dated to put it nicely... It became a favorite of mine when I had a couple that reached their 75th wedding anniversary. It had been played at their 25th anniversary and became a favorite afterwards. I had their help making the playlist. I made sure that this one was on the list so that they could dance to it as they had danced to it at both their 25th and 50th wedding anniversary parties. It took a few of us about a week practicing with various staff, but I will always have the wonderful memory of their dance, now in wheelchairs. https://youtu.be/brkS2akRIjY

darlene cheatham

Fabulous. I would like to hear What a Wonderful World

Tracie Schlaak

And stop being so self deprecating. You are one of the biggest talents around. Thoroughly enjoyed everything about this video. 😊❤️

Veronika Troll

Very nice! What a unique arrangement! :)

Olympia

Wow! Bravo for an amazing arrangement as always😁🎶

Jamie T.

Regarding your second paragraph, I was totally thinking the same thing! All I could think of with the "girly" is please, please, please Geoff, don't cut your hair!

Jamie T.

I agree. Humble is fine, self deprecating is not.😊

Rosali Koudstaal

A miner with a smartwatch and no dirt🤣🤣 Gee how is it possible that your versions are always better than the originals?

A.J. O'Brien

Not enough words for how much I love this arrangement, singing, and production. Even the "interaction" among the "back-up singers" is delightful. My favorite vocal video by far is...or is that "was"...your extraordinary rendition of Headless Horseman. I rewatch it way too often. And I've often thought, how on earth is Geoff going to ever match *that* (because I think it'd be impossible to surpass it)? And, today, I think I have my 16-ton answer. (All of that said, all of your videos are amazing. We are talking about discriminating among the merest atoms of perfection among perfection here.)

A.J. O'Brien

I'd love to talk you into covering Billy Joel's For the Longest Time and Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry Be Happy as solo arrangements. And I'd love for VoicePlay to cover Kiss from a Rose. :)

Debs Badger

AJ, Are you a VoicePlay patron? If so, go back to a post dated 11/19/2019...

A.J. O'Brien

Hi! I'm not a VoicePlay patron...yet. I'm at the max of my budget already...d'oh! But thanks!

Cynthia Ross

Lol...my first thought when he shared the still last week was “oooh...new song AND a gun show....”

Karie

Thank you Geoff! I also grew up listening to this on a 45. You have made me love it even more. Your voice brings tears of joy to my eyes. Thanks for being you!!

Alex King

I listen to this song so often that I will soon learn every note.

Dominique

Geoff, I absolutely love your version of the song. It is very clever and creative. I'm so happy that you also ventured out to sing by yourself because I really adore your voice. To me your voice feels like a soft blanket that I would like to wrap myself in and feel like everything is going to be all right. Can't wait what you will cover next Cheers to Eli, loved seeing him at the end 😉 Dominique

Emily Murphy

Sweet baby Jesus in a burlap diaper wrapped in swaddling clothes that was amazing. 🤩🤩🤩

WisconSims

I fondly remember my grandpa singing this song in his hearty, bass voice when I was just a wee one. I've loved it ever since (30+ years) Thank you so much for doing this one... I'm in love!

Tendies4977

when is hitting public youtube?

Name

This is such a great showcase for you talent, I can’t stop watching and listening. Everything about it comes together beautifully! (Eli was a nice touch, too.)

Sabine W

This is the video that started it all for me! I know the song from a video game (Fallout 76, it has a radio station with lots of songs from that time period) and loved it and I guess YouTube algorithm knows me well and put this in my suggestions! I actually found your channel first and watched some of your tutorial videos where you mentioned VoicePlay and was like "wait, there is an acapella group too?!" and down the rabbit hole I went :D Now I'm on both Patreons, still watching my way through ALL OF THE THINGS. Thank you so much for all that you do! This song will always have a special place on my iPod <3

Sarah Borzelli

I was watching this now because it's my daughter's favorite of Geoffs videos (she is 8) and then I read the description...androgynous, skinny, girlie man hahahhahahaha that's a good one! I enjoy reading your things as much as I enjoy watching and listening to you - golden!
