Request for retirement denied. Here's an idea for the next song: since you're so good at subverting expectations, do it again. You took a love song and made it ... not. So take what is not a love song and make it into one. And not necessarily romantic love, but love between parent/child, siblings, best friends, etc. After watching you flirt with the camera in this one, I'm not sure we could handle you crooning a love song. On the other hand, I could totally see you doing Why Don't We Just Dance by Josh Turner. Put a record on the gramophone and dance with Kathy. Naturally, William will cut in to dance with Mom.

Five hours after the release, I have finally put a pause on replaying this masterpiece long enough to read everyone's comments and type out thanks of my own. I also had never heard of this song until the title release, but the moment I looked it up I knew that it was a complete no brainer. Elvis and JD Sumner? I think they wrote this song for you. It has been a blast dreaming and attempting to predict what direction you would take this in. We got a few things right and other things we never would have guessed. This hit everything just right; the humor, the sexiness, the utter relatability! The whole package is just *chefs kiss* You are right to be proud of this, I think it is your Magnum Opus so far, and I am not sure how you will manage to top it - but I certainly hope you will try, because I have absolute faith in your musical genius.

Before today, I always thought Geoff had two completely different sides - the sexy, seductive, steal yo' girl (or boy) guy who makes panties fall off whenever he talks, and the adorkable dumbass dad who isn't afraid to get silly. Now you pay attention here…I’m about to get real with you. If I EVER hear you imply, infer, or otherwise hint that you think you can’t dance ever again, so help me I’m going to walk up to you one day and box your ears. You can bust a move as well as any non-pro dancer I’ve ever seen, and better than most. Heck, you probably could have gone pro if you’d spent as much effort on that as the singing. What makes you think he did? Sound while filming doesn’t make it to the cut, and I believe the camera reduces motion a bit, so him laughing wouldn’t make the camera jiggle. Who's to say Layne didn't? The audio we hear is not the audio from the studio while filming, and the "steady" part of steadycam would compensate if he was laughing. I'm guessing these two regularly crack each other up, and have been for over 25 years. With how often they look at each other in videos, sometimes I wonder if they're checking to make sure they're on the same beat, or to make sure they're still in character ... or get them to break.

Okay, this is going to be long and personal, sorry for that. Also, if I sound weird, that's partly because I am weird and partly because I am not a native speaker of English. I was an Elvis fan as a teenager, and when I first saw you mention "Way Down" I was like "OMG is it what I think it is?!". I was also a bit apprehensive because as a die-hard Elvis fan with absolutely no ear for music (you might ask what I am doing here, and rightly so), I sometimes cannot fully appreciate what musicians do. My musically challenged ears simply distinguish between "like it" and "nah, not my kind of music", only occassionally going to the extremes: "omg turn that thing off NOW!!!" or "omg I want MORE!!!". Sadly I found VoicePlay's version of "Can't Help Falling in Love" too difficult and too different to really enjoy. (Also because it's "our wedding song" for my husband and me: it features in our wedding video, and the video guy was a genius, the exact moment we grasped hands after the vows, without actually even noticing it, he made a close-up of our hands, and in the background Elvis sings "take my hand, take my whole life too". A very special moment and a very special song for us. No matter how good VoicePlay's version really was, it was "nah, not my kind of music" for me. Except for the bass, the bass was good. [I hope I am forgiven if I add that some other VoicePlay songs give me the "omg I want more" feeling. I can listen to "Hoist the Colors" for hours on the loop. But "Can't Help Falling in Love" doesn't do it for me.] As a result, I was a bit unsure what to expect when you announced "Way down" some days ago. I wasn't sure it was THE Elvis song I knew, and if it was, I wasn't sure I was going to like it. I was afraid of being disappointe again. Because, let's face it, Elvis got me into the extreme of "omg I want MORE" back when I was 13, and even now he still holds a special place in my heart. When anybody sings Elvis, my biased ears need a lot of persuasion. But THIS!!! Thank you so much, Geoff! First, I just love love love the way you introduce your new songs in the preview videos. The story gives the song a new dimension, and it gives the listener more insight and the feeling of almost being there, being involved. I was thrilled when you mentioned it was Elvis's last song and how you had not heard it before, and that J.D. Sumner sang a double low C. I actually got a new perspective on the original. I had listened to the song many times without even once asking myself who did the background vocals, and without wondering who did that very, very low sound at the end. So I learnt something today. And then came the song. I loved every second of it. My ears were like "omg we want more, want more, this is good!". My eyes were literally hooked on Geoff, vertical, horizontal and in-between, doing the Elvis stuff with a floor mop and with a microphone. Pretending to be Elvis, parodying Elvis, and almost being Elvis, while still remaining the cleaning guy, while still being the geoffiest Geoff throughout the song. My brain was torn: one hemisphere was in solemn awe of the double low C, still pondering on its difficulty and importance, while the other giggled hysterically at Jeff, Jeoph and Goff making faces, singing, taking notes, being the audience, the backup singers and the judges of the performance. That was a real feast. And the answer to the question: "Why am I here if I don't have an ear for music?" should be clear. Because Geoff's singing always gives me the "OMG I want more" feeling. It started with "Sixteen Tons" my husband showed me, and "The Misty Mountains" (we love "The Hobbit"; but at that time I did not even realize it was four Geoffs singing, I thought it was four different dwarves singing), and "Bear Necessities". Then I went exploring on my own and found "The Headless Horseman", and couldn't stop listening and watching, and "The Monster Mash" (and the first time I honestly didn't see Kathy was there, so I jumped and screamed too). I come from a place where Halloween is not a thing and both songs were new to me, but I absolutely adored them. I think it was after "The Monster Mash" that I subscribed on Patreon for the first time in my life, because, you know, I wanted MORE. So please Geoff, whatever you do, do not retire! Wear the laurel of the "double double low C" proudly and never stop. I kinda have a feeling I'm not the only one here who wants more :)

I’m not worried about the tempo. 🙂 The complexity of some of the Bach-ish bass lines he’s done in the background of VP stuff far exceeds the complexity of any rock and roll tune. And there’s also no reason to keep the tempo - or that exact rhythm. That could sound just as good slowed down a bit with a little more syncopation. If he decided he wanted to do it, he’d make it smoke one way or another. I have complete faith in that. 😄

I was referring to when he and Kathy were working for Universal. He was Frankenstein in the Beetlejuice show and his first performance had a wardrobe malfunction. He has discussed it in one or two of his chats. He had a costume change where his outer costume was to come off tear away style while he was hidden in a column of smoke. Kathy was supposed to help him but when the pants didn't come off, she abandoned him to get to her cue, another performer helped him, and the show went on. He may have brought it up in this most recent chat. There is video of one of the performances on YT, just not the particular one where his costume change failed.

I know, you once said it's not quite the place to talk about the video side of things and camera gear and stuff but I really love how much your recent video work has developed into something more dynamic with waaaay more depth as you found a way to include Goff, Jeoph and Jeff while still having a moving camera (Layne did a great job, indeed!). And the set and lights really helped creating a nice show-like atmosphere. Just gotta appreciate those big leaps in quality :)

Gah, after returning home from a week traveling when you posted this, I finally had the chance to give this one its due diligence; Geoff you creative genius. This is done so cleverly and hilariously well. I have had this on replay all day. I'm SO curious for the reaction of the general public. As I said in my previous comment, I get some Weird Al Yankovic vibes from certain parts of the video which raises you to comedic legend status, honestly. You give it your all, but with this one you REALLY gave it your all. Showing us those sweet dance moves and wonderful comedic touches in the video. Layne did excellent on the steadycam, there's a lot of really great shots in there! This is SUCH a different song than we have heard you sing before, much more fast paced, but you delivered so well. Firstly, we are denying your request to retire BUT are happy to give you an extended break as required. This was a masterpiece, made with more than a little Castellucci magic. <3 Secondly, after your teasers, I made the decision to listen to the original version of this song and was not a particular fan. It was "ok" to me but that was it. I was mildly disappointed by my reaction and hoped that you would perform your usual brand of magic on it. Well, as UNUSUAL and UNIQUE as your version of the song is, mission flipping accomplished! Honestly, this is one of my definite favourites of yours. It is fun and, at least to this lay person, feels musically complex and so multi-faceted even without watching the video. Bravo! And thirdly, the video. Sir, what are you doing to us? Well, I'm sure you've seen from the comments on here exactly what you are doing to us. Bunch of thirsty, thirsty people! LOL I love that you had so much fun, both with the costuming, and the choreography. I love the fact that both outfits were grey, which I think might be my favourite colour on you, so there was the tie in between the "fantasy" and "reality" portions. The video was fantastic and absolutely is getting its' 5 watches a day from me (and the rest, but YouTube only counts the first 5)...Bravo! The ONLY down side of this song is it can't go on my night time playlist once it is on Spotify because it makes me too happy and I would never sleep. The only potential problem with this plan is that Geoff is addicting - once you get into all the webchat replays you might not be able to downgrade (speaking from experience here)
