Which franchise do you think was followed by more successful attempts to copy it: The Marvel Cinematic Universe or Grand Theft Auto's Open World?

Ian Miller

Hey MinnMax Gang, Have you ever had a religious or spiritual experience while playing a game? I'm not a religious man myself, but the closest I've come to feeling this way was when I beat Outer Wilds. I won't spoil the game, but the ending had me so profoundly contemplative and enraptured that it made me truly appreciate the beauty of life and death in a way I never had before. Am I nuts?! Anyway, thanks for the great content as always. Toodles, Ian Miller.

Stevelution

Hey everyone! You get a chance to spend a few days visiting any studio you would like, to do a feature on them. You have access to anyone you’d like to speak to with nothing off limits in regards to what you can talk about. Who are you visiting and what are you asking them?

Miskain

Do Minnesotans really say "Okay, then" all the time? My wife and I watched Fargo some time ago. Somehow the phrase stuck and now we keep saying it. Is there a phrase any of you have started using after a tv-show / movie / game? Now please say "Okay, then" in your Max Minnesotan accent when you move on to the next question.

Palo

Hey all, what are your donut preferences? Raised? Glazed? Long johns? Holes? Where do you get em? I love a maple donut, but they aren't everywhere.

Mathias Jülich

What are your thoughts on Marvel 1943? Are you excited? Why do you think they chose a title devoid of any recognizable super hero?

Ariel in Seattle

In honor of Game Informer adding a 12-month print subscription and millennials allegedly killing the magazine industry: which publications do you still subscribe to?

dingus2k

Hey MinnMax, I loved Pacific Drive so much it had me thinking about other game genres that would be improved by adding a vehicle that you upgrade to build a bond with over time. Discuss.

Joe Garifo

Howdy MinnMax, would you be more inclined to let someone drive you around, steering in 3rd person if they were in the car with a VR headset or in a remote location on a display?

Lewis K

Hey team, I re-listened to the previous couple years Two Tens in December and forgot I noted who said they would check out games that came out that year so I’m here today to ask: DID THEY CHECK THEM OUT? - Kyle said he’d play more Chicory and Deltarune Ch 2 - Leo and JeffM said he would check out Returnal - Janet said she would eventually beat Bravely Default 2 - Sarah said she’d play Deltarune Ch 2 As Sarah and Leo are the only relevant guests this week, DID THEY!? My list stops here so I evidently got bored of this post-2021. Thanks!

Hayden Williams

Hey cohorts! Giovanni Colantonio wrote an excellent piece for Digital Trends about the 1 change that game devs want to see in the industry. It’s a great piece about where the devs see issues and what could be improved, but what is hard to change as well. From a media side of things, what is one change that you would love to see the industry take? Feel free to give one change on the dev side and on the games media side as I’d love to hear your thoughts on both sides. . https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/gdc-2024-developers-discuss-incustry-change/

BearCommando

Hey all, Any unique twists on classic recipes you enjoy? My roommate in college made me pizza once and replaced the sauce with a mixture of strawberry jam and balsamic vinegar, and it was honestly one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had.

Kyle Silva

Hello folks. I was just at Uniqlo to purchase some graphic shirts from the recent Capcom 40th Anniversary collection. At this point, Uniqlo has had a lot of games and anime collab collections, have you made the impulse to buy any? P.S. Apologies to Haley, as they don’t seem to have Uniqlo in Halifax yet.

Malcolm Holliday

Hey MinnMax, have there been times where the visual aspect of a movie, show, comic, etc uplifted a weak/basic story to near masterpiece status for you? For me I tend to think of many Jackie Chan movies, Rumble in the Bronx and Meals on Wheels in particular, the stunt work and choreography are so masterful.

Dennis Cortes

Hey friends, what was the game you played/moment that made the switch flip where you knew you wanted to go into the video game industry?

Victor Pham

Which developer (indie or AAA) has you the most excited for their next project?

Zane Dukes

What’s a better ship, Cloud and Tifa or Kiryu and Seonhee?

Qax

Sometimes dd2 feels like it's half way between character-action and Immersive sim. Sometimes I like that but other times I'm left feeling wanting for more, does anyone else feel similar? Also what's the hardest you've ever laughed?

Trent Weber

One of my top Spotify genres last year was "Minneapolis Sound" which I've come to understand means Prince and Prince related acts. How much influence or impact does Prince have in your lives for those that live around the Twin Cities? Do his proteges or related artist like The Time, Shelia E, or Apollonia 6 have an impact there or is it mostly just Prince at this point? Have you ever visited Paisley Park?

Funky Duck

What's an item that you can't help but buy even though you don't need any more? I can't pass up a good backpack or sling bag.

Joshua Novalis

Hey all! What's your favorite "so bad it's good" game title? People really harp on titles like "Lies of P" and "Triangle Strategy," but their weirdness crosses a threshold that somehow makes them memorable. And isn't memorable...good? Would love to hear some of your favorite titles that shouldn't work in theory, but somehow do their job.

Chris Fennessy

Hey MinnMax, I love the chaos and the good vibes when you work together to create your two tens lists. I’d also love to know what games you love that arent shared with the group. What is one of your top games of all time that you know won’t be on anyone else’s list?

Clayton Dexter

Have you ever returned to a game and finished it that you initially put down for any reason? If so, what brought you back and why did it click the second (or third, or fourth…) time?

BEEFCAKE

Do you think people save their good questions for when it's a prize that they really want?

SlyCut

Hello all, What do you think is the coolest dance move ever? This topic came up during family dinner and my answer was easily the moonwalk. I showed a video of Michael Jackson doing the moonwalk and my son's mind was blown. What dance move blows your mind whenever you see it?

Stoopkid90

Hey minnmax crew I don't have a question but i do have a response to last week's house oddity question a few years ago my wife and I bought our first house and the town that we moved into was founded in 1905 so we're assuming it was built shortly after based on its design. It has 2 spiral stair cases and 3 fire places. One in the living room, one in the kitchen and one in the basement. We've been slowly remodeling the house and when we were working on the kitchen we took out the counter tops and removed a wooden panel on the wall behind it to discover a secret room! It was probably only a 2 foot by 2 foot space but it was tall enough to stand in and even had a light in there that still worked! To this day we aren't sure what purpose that tiny room served so we just covered it back up and hope we didn't release some weird demon into the world.

Jason Wojnar

When's the last time someone got furiously enraged at you in person? I told someone to put their phone away during a screening on John Wick 4 and, to make a long story short, the story ended with the women getting kicked out of the theater for screaming at me at the top of her lungs and a mysterious person from another theater threatening to beat me up yelling "yo pop out bro" while security escorted him away.

Jake Scott

Hey Ben and the crew a few weeks ago someone wrote in about dad games and I wanted to show the moms some love. My mom never played any video games but would always watch my brother and I play Pokemon snap and viva pinata. Now she has been playing Pokemon go and is level 43! What is yalls mom games?

Travis in Fargo

How do you feel about the camo aesthetic?

Aging_Poorly

I've never played a Yakuza game and am feeling some FOMO, so I'm watching the early games in the series on YouTube before dipping my toe into Yakuza Zero. They're very easy games to watch while doing other things, and I feel like I'm getting close to the full experience. Ever turn to YouTube to catch up on old lore ahead of a new release? Any particularly good experiences?

Ray Sweat

Have you ever expanded your vocabulary because of a game, or learned a new word? Playing a lot of Gran Turismo on the original Playstation in junior high and unlocking "concept cars" was when I learned the word "concept." I thought it meant special or something, but eventually learned the actual definition through context clues.

whitemex

If you had a time machine, what would you tell Video Game industry leaders to avoid the current bubble it seemingly finds itself in? Or do you believe the industry was doomed to go this no matter what?

Kevin Kuper

Hello all, Kevin here. How many owls would you have to see to be concerned that something is going on?

SuperCerberus

Are there any games that you can definitively say you’re one of the best players in the world at, no matter how niche? Not to brag, but I once topped the leaderboards on a level of My Friend Pedro and a song on Amplitude.

Poofydoo

Do you eat your burgers upside down? One day I noticed my wife when she takes a bite from her burger she does the following: 1. She grabs the burger 2. Flips it upside down 3. Takes a bite with the top bun facing down Do any of you guys eat your burgers/sandwiches like this? Have I been doing this all wrong?

Lamb Dance

The Farming Simulator franchise has a new release this week... Farming Simulator Kids. Kind of funny to do a kids version of a series that's so Dad Game core. Want to throw out any weird ideas for a kiddie spin-off to an existing franchise?

Derek Achoy

Hi can Sarah give us an updated product review on her face snails?? Thank you

Chandler

Hey Minnmax, I'm moving soon so, naturally, I've been stressing out about all things home related. What are your favorite parts of your own homes? Do any of you have any cool renovations or gardens or whatever that you're proud of? Thanks! ILY

James Pies

Good morrow great MinnMax! Playing Unicorn Overlord and Dragon's Dogma 2 together hath gotten me in full medieval mode. Tis an issue of late. Should thee were not the big hero of a game and had to be hold, but for a normal schlub, what wouldst thou settle on being? Innkeeper? Armorer? Would I had more singing talent, bard had been the way to heed, yet I'd personally resort for being a fortune teller. I could overcharge the heck out of townspeople and what doth they say to me, I be wrong? Thank you for all that you do, I must be thee adieu. Your podcast I grow fonder, I spotted a ladder over yonder.

Nate Voris

Watching Leo and Haley's traveling theater troupe and seeing them learn dances from two strangers during a Red Dead RP stream really showed off some of the unique, wholesome moments that RP servers can bring to a typically violent game. If you could pick any violent game to transform through dedicated roleplaying servers what game would it be and what role would you occupy in the game world?

David Kunker

Hey Team! Dragons dogma 2 introduced dragonsplague which is hardly communicated but can have a huge effect on a playthrough. What’s a mechanic similar to this that has ruined or altered a playthrough in another game? Or is there a game changing mechanic that you wish to see in more games coming up? Thanks!

LlorchDurden

Y'all Next Monday is April 1st, what happened? Is the year at 1.5x? Is it going pretty fast for anyone else?

Phelix Diaz

I recently started playing Yakuza: Like a Dragon in preparation for Infinite Wealth and noticed this Bully and GTA are some of the few games with regular human beings in contemporary setting, with "ordinary" problems. Why don't we get more action games with regular people, with ordinary problems?

Graham Walker

So I just finished reading "The Road" by Cormack Macarthy and the ending made me weep like a child. Through the tears I was suddenly struck by the notion that I didn't think a video game could make me feel this way. Conversely the first time I beat Ornstein and Enough in dark souls - that is a feeling I think only a videogame can give. Do you think that videogames are capable of stirring emotions in the same way as other mediums or is it just that they are better at doing some more than others?

Joshua Ayers

Hey y'all, which is more important to a person's happiness: their situation or their perspective? I changed myself a lot in (& after) college and feel like my new perspective made a huge difference even before my situation changed (and probably helped enable that change).

RabidLime

when you were little, what did you think would be invented by 2024? jetpacks? hover cars? the matrix?

Luca Alberti

Hello crew, I always found teleports in games disruptive, there is a before Fly approach and an after Fly approach in Pokémon for example, and DD2 just strengthens this belief in me: making teleports hardly accessible makes everything so much more immersive! I really hope some other games take a page out of Capcom's book on this one, do you like having a teleport at your disposal, do you avoid it until late game or do you not care either way?

Jeremy Farbman

Have you ever engaged with tie-in media but not the corresponding "main" piece? I read the Jedi Survivor prequel novel but have yet to get around to playing the game.

It's Hugo's Nook

I went on a date last week and got surprised by my date’s “go-to first date question”: if you were at this super fancy, very exclusive gala and the waiter going around with the canapés was serving properly seasoned human meat, would you eat it? It took me a sec, but I think I would? I mean when else would you have the chance to know whether we taste like chicken or beef. Plus someone already died for it, it’s worse if it goes to waste 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Scott Hebert

I just picked up Balatro and I'm gonna start it next week. I'm largely spoiler-free on the game and mechanics, so I'm enjoying that period where I get to create what the game is like in my imagination before I experience the game proper. I tend to do this with all sorts of media, a recent example being the anime Akira. I spent...maybe two and a half decades or so...building up the scenario for this movie about a red motorbike in Japan. When I eventually saw it, it of course crushed all my expectations and my joy felt further lifted because of it. Does anyone else on the team consume media like this, or am I just a solitary, endlessly-edging sadist?

Bloody Waffle

does the more recent practice of adding micro-transactions after the game releases bother you as a reviewer? do you feel it takes away from a good game like DD2?

quick_gotoplanB

Hello MinnMax. Are there any game soundtracks you listen to but haven't played the game it is from? I have never played Planet Coaster but I have "You, Me & Gravity: The Music of Planet Coaster" by Jim Guthrie and JJ Ipsen in my music library and every time it comes on (I always shuffle my entire library) I am blown away by how good it is. It sounds like it could be a standalone LP. What say you?

MrButtons

Hey MinnMax, When given the responsibility of playing music in the car (or any group setting), do you play the music you want to hear or music you think your passengers will enjoy?

Stephen Woodson

Haley brought up a great question on Bonus Pod: Are we slow to ants?

Thom Blackburn

Was the dlc for South park the fractured but whole worth playing? Since snow day appears to be a bust.

Christopher Reardon

Hello 'horts, Between Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and X-Men '97, 12-year-old me is having quite a comeback year. It got me thinking about what films from that time period I'd want to see remade, which then got me thinking: has anybody ever *wanted* a film to be remade, or do we all just hear that a film is being remade and decide at that time whether or not we care?

HydraTower

Do you think you could survive 500 years given an extended lifespan?

Sean

Hey MinnMax, What is the best game that you gave a second chance? I didn't enjoy Shadow of the Colossus very much when I first played it and ended up quitting after only a couple of hours. A friend told me how amazing it was so I gave it another try. I ended up loving it and it's now in my personal top ten games of all time.

Elliot Barker

Hey Minnmax! With more publishers clearly shying away from idea of pouring money into new live service games, are there any franchises (video games or otherwise, get silly with it if you want to!) that you'd have loved to see as a live service game? And what things would you put in their season/battle pass or shop? Love the show, thanks for all the content, Elliot

Adam Walters

Hello MinnMax, What was your favorite video game when you were 15?

tamekitty

What's the best song you never want to hear again?

Matthew Goss

Not a question, and I wish Kyle was on this episode, but wanted to give a shout out to the GI crew on launching a standalone subscription for physical Game Informer mags! Cant tell ya how fast I dropped a sub to support the physical version of my favorite gaming mag :-)

Andrew Wiggins

I can remember a summer all too long ago when I was playing Dark Cloud 2 (a great game) while listening to the New Found Glory album Catalyst (their best album). Now the two are intrinsically connected in my mind forever. When I think of one, I think of the other and I remember being on the couch, AC unit struggling in the window and my massive 32 inch television. Anyone on the show have a video game connection that brings them right back to a time and place or another piece of media?

Brad Beyer

Not a criticism of MinnMax specifically, but do you ever notice how on a lot of gaming podcasts that everyone gears up to gush about the newest greatest game, only to then proceed to spend 20 minutes explaining in exacting detail about the one or two nitpicky things that they didn’t enjoy about the game before finally capping it off with a 10-second “But yeah, I totally love this game, go play it!” I guess I just wish that was reversed? I understand the need to fairly give criticism, but I just think it often comes at the expense of celebrating so many great and positive things that developers truly deserve credit for.

p9xm

What's the largest animal you think you could take on in a hand-to-hand fight, in the animal's natural habitat? My answer is probably a small horse.

jacob cummings

Good evening Minns and Maxers, Have any of you ever done a Julie and Julia type challenge, and if not, do you have an idea of one you'd like to try? Julie and Julia is a movie about a woman who cooks all 524 recipes in Julia Child's cookbook in 1 year. For me, last May I challenged myself to read 524 volumes of manga in 1 year (that's like reading One Piece 5 times) and though I still have a couple months left to go, I have already surpassed that number! If you haven't done a challenge like this I highly recommend it. (within reason of course)

Graham Jones

Can you talk about the Alan Wake presentation from GDC?

Graham Jones

I have recently been reflecting on what makes a good sequel. It seems that in older games such as uncharted that the sequel is more story than mechanics but recently it seems that sequels are almost only defined by new mechanics. What are the pannels thoughts? Is there a perfect equation for a great game sequel?

CaffeineDad

Hey gang! I'm going to blame the many hours of the FF7 Rebirth Deepest Dive that I've listened to this past week, but I accidentally dreamt about an episode of the MinnMax Show Podcast. In it, Ben was yelling at the audience that he had a super secret tip to get an extremely large tax return, but my dream ended before he could teach us his ways! What are some lifehacks that are just so good that the world doesn't want us to know them?

Ben

What's the smallest moment that had the biggest emotional impact on you? For example, I finally did the tiny little quest for the jellyfish spirit ash in Elden Ring and it's such a brutally concentrated dose of that signature From melancholy that I teared up and it was a story told in maybe 50 words and only one spoken line of dialog.

dmoreno

NakeyJakey recently put out a video on Red Dead Redemption 2 and said he considered it to be Rockstars Magnum Opus. He went on to say he doesn’t think they’ll ever reach that height again with Dan Houser gone but is hopeful for GTA6. What other game is considered a Magnum Opus from a dev still making games but on a downward trend? There’s an interesting parallel with RDR1/RDR2 and TLOU/TLOU pt2. The first game in that franchise being revolutionary story telling for the time and the sequels rivaling some of the best stories told in film. Is TLOU pt2 Naughty Dog’s Magnum Opus?

notweirder

Best game with a bad name? I'll start: Baldur's Gate 3

Ollie Clay

Hey gang! What are we thinking about Judas now that Ken Levine has had a chance to properly explain ‘narrative legos’? The pitch is cool, but it seems so difficult to make happen I’m pretty sceptical as to how it will all actually play out. Kinda feel like there’ll be loads of ‘decisions’ when you’re playing but will ultimately lead to like 1 of 3 endings. I am loving though that some developers recently are prioritising new systems and ideas over graphical prowess.

El Barto

How important is audio fidelity for you while playing games? Do you tend to play games on TV speakers or standard headphones? Or do you have some kind of surround setup or hifi headphones? Or even 3D sound like an Atmos setup? Or are you even "sound multitasking" with a podcast on one ear? Does your answer depend on the game or genre?
