Could a single player game have a tradition multi-player add on and be successful in 2024? E.g. factions for the Last of us

Hey hey hey, All you computer loving cohorts here, have you ever sent fan mail/e-mail to a creator of something creative you find personally important? Ex: I sent an e-mail to Andrew Prahlow, composer for Outer Wilds soundtrack, just to tell him I loved his composition and how much it meant to me. I don't expect them to write back or anything, I just wanted them to feel appreciation. -Groffles

Caroline

Hi Haley! What's your favorite Nancy Drew game and why is it Danger on Deception Island?

kajmo

What are your favourite enemy/NPC names in games? I've been playing Yakuza Like a Dragon and recently came across an enemy called 'Skaterboi' and it had me laughing out loud because it was unexpected

Good morning/afternoon/evening minnmaxers. Are any of you looking forward to the SandLand game coming out next week? Generally I expect an anime licensed game to be somewhere between mid and bad but was pleasantly surprised when I played the demo at comicon. This will be one of the last projects Akira Toriyama worked on and as a big fan of the original SandLand manga, I'm happy that it's randomly receiving so much love this year with both a show and movie adaptation alongside this game!

SuperMediocreMan

Hey MinnMax, Ben and Ronnie said they were U2 fans on the latest Deepest Dive after making a reference to their song “Vertigo.” As a fellow U2 appreciator, I have to ask: What is your favorite U2 song and why is U2 so controversial?

Galen Ryder

Since this came up a bunch in discussion of the Triple-I Initiative Showcase, what's your definition of Indie? Mine personally is that the developer / publisher isn't publicly traded which technically means Valve is Indie but this is the hill I'm dying on.

If smell and taste was possible to have in games, which game creator would be the most likely to do something “new” with it?

SuperCerberus

What’s the dumbest purchase you’ve ever made?

Hey gang, growing up I loved the show Room 101 which was named after George Orwell’s 1984, in which Room 101 was said to contain the worst thing in the world. Every week they would have on a different guest who would venture three things to put into Room 101 and the host would decide which thing to put into Room 101 where it belonged. With Haley as the independent adjudicator, what thing from gaming would each of you put forward to go into Room 101 and which one is Haley picking? It can be anything from micro-transactions to a gaming franchise.

mopies

Do y'all dream of the games you're playing often?

Missed Joke Opportunity: When Ben wanted to clarify that Janet was referring to a real life physical version of Pong, with the term “Pong Stand-em,” Ben should have said “I heard Pong Stand-em will be an NPC in Star Wars: Outlaws.” P.S. Nobody said it had to be missed good joke opportunities.

Conner McCabe

Hi Ben, Sarah, Jacob, and Haley! If you could Kirby swallow another MinnMax contributor (get your minds out of the gutter) and gain one of their abilities as a podcast contributor / content creator, what would it be? Would you take Leo’s wit? Janet’s articulation skill? Ben’s point guard/host ability? Let’s hear it!

thejjuan1

Hello minnmax. There has been a big discourse on weekly release vs binge release. The big shows bringing this discourse up are the fallout tv show which was released on one day, and Xmen 97, which is a weekly show. Which one do you guys preferred?

LlorchDurden

no question on my end this week, just saying podzKnife is a 10/10 emote and I use it all the time

Tom Rickard

Hey folks! Missed joke opportunity here that is unfortunately just a pun. When you all were talking about Geoff Keighley last week, Janet said “reading the tea leaves” when she should’ve said “reading the Keigh-leaves”. Anyway what is the longest you’ve been stuck on a boss in a game? I once got so stuck on the final boss in Bloodborne, Gehrman, that to save my sanity I limited myself to one try a day and it almost took me an entire year! Hoping someone one ups me so I don’t feel like such a bum!

Bloody Waffle

For all, if you could have 10 minutes with any game creator/developer and ask whatever you want, who would you choose and why?

SenttheProphet

Has the fallout tv show sped up the development of fallout 5?

Hey friends, I had a real "am I the a-hole moment" with my roommates. She has a dog and when I moved in she asked if dogs bother me and I said "no, I just don't want to take care of it and walk it" and she was okay with that. In a month and a half I have been made to walk it twice because no one else was home (the other roommate has no problem walking it and he was gone leaving me alone with it). This second time I told her "please don't ask me again, this dog is not my responsibility and I am not comfortable walking it" and she said okay but part of me feels like she thinks this isn't normal for me to refuse to walk it. My friend says this is a total cultural thing (this is in Kyiv, Ukraine) but you tell me, am I being a bad roommate by not wanting to walk this dog when it's not an emergency? Have you had similar roommate conflicts.

Hey MinnMax! Is a Pokemon an onomatopoeia? If you’re unaware, onomatopoeias are words that sound like the noise they make (think BOOM, or CRASH). So wouldn’t a Pikachu count, since that’s the noise a Pikachu makes?

Matthew Byerwalter

What is a piece of children's media you saw when you were younger that scared you? There was this scene in The Brave Little Toaster where a window air conditioning unit starts freaking out and breaks down in front of the main characters in a really over the top way that frightened me when I was younger.

Jared Piers

Hey minnmax, which VHS cover scared you the most as a kid?

Zack Campbell

Just finished reading Count of Monte Cristo. I thought it was going to be stuffy given that it was written 180 years ago but I loved it. It doesn’t make my personal top 10 list but it definitely makes my top 100 which spawned a question I can’t stop thinking about: How many books are out there that would instantly be in my top 100 as soon I read them? How many video games? How many movies? Songs? Tv shows? For me I think I’ve experienced: 40/100 of my favorite books 65/100 video games 60/100 movies 85/100 TV shows 27/100 Songs I’d love to hear y’all’s thoughts maybe specifically about games if the topic is too big, how many of your theoretical 100 favorite games have you actually played?

notweirder

Hey minnmax! When going to an art gallery, are there any sections you tend to gravitate towards (sculptures, impressionist paintings, photographs, etc)? Personally, I love seeing what abstract modern art is in a collection

Hi Gamers™️ On last weeks podcast someone brought up the subject of regrets, and Huber mentioned having to sell games in order to buy more. I made probably the worst decision in games anyone ever made - I sold my Nintendo 64 console and all my games (including Banjo Kazooie, Mario Party, DK64, Paper Mario etc.) - and had just enough to buy one copy of Ape Escape 2 for the PS2. For the record, I remember enjoying it but at what cost...

Varr

Hi! First time, long time, etcetera etcetera. But hey, I don't even have a question. Just wanted to say that, Ben, hands down you have my favorite ad reads out of any podcast I listen to. I'll hit the Skip Ahead button so fast on all other podcast, but you do a great job at making them entertaining.

Dusty Beaman

Ben, do you have any insider updates on Legacy of Goku 4? Deepest Dive on the Legacy of Goku Triology maybe? Reference the MinnMax Show on 6/30/2021 at the 1:05:30 mark

Hey MinnMax! The Fallout frenzy going on with the new series is pretty interesting to see. As we know, games are taking longer to make, so a series or mobile game seems like a good way to keep a franchise on our minds in the meantime. I'm also reminded of that quote from the Bandai Namco CEO saying he wanted Elden Ring to be a part of everyone's "daily life" What is a game series you would like to be part of your "daily life" or do you prefer to have some time away from your favorite games? Thanks!

RickyWinterborn

Cheating to get unlimited money in the sims 1 was so fun, I felt like a boomer god being able to afford a house and working appliances. When's a time that you cheated in a game and it actually improved your experience?

Fantana

Ben, literally shouted at the tv when you were discussing the Dino Rts game last week and you lamented not having a Dino/rts/strategy game…. There is one!!! Total War Warhammer 2 and 3 has the Lizardmen faction and you can have loads of dinos in your army, it’s an amazing game that has had huge support from its devs and is so well delivered. Sending a full stack of T-Rex against an army is just great fun. I think it would be in your wheelhouse if you like age of empires/mythology, I’d love to hear what you think about Total War. Anyway so grateful you guys have kept the podcast banter and fun I have enjoyed since back in your game informer days going and long may you continue.

Dan from Canada

Often Games are too long - What are some games that you felt should have been longer ? I am hard pressed to think of one, I’m either always left with I liked it and left excited for future or happy it didn’t overstay its welcome. Or if it’s bad, I’m happy it’s done

Ben I saw that Minnmax provided some footage for The story of the Oregon Trail video essay by The Gaming Historian! Could you please tell us more about your involvement with the video and will The Gaming Historian ever be a future MinnMax guest? The video is amazing and everyone should watch it by the way.

Hey there Benrah Hacob (or Sarben Jaley?) Gaming confession and question. I have put hundreds of hours into Hollow Knight across multiple systems. Despite that, I never really enjoyed Hollow Knight's boss rush portion of the game (Godhome) and ended up using an invincibility glitch to get the platinum. My question is, Have you ever used glitches/exploits to get passed a portion, beat, or get an achievement for a game? If so, what game and does that game have an asterisk next to it in your mind?

Stoopkid90

Hey Minnmax Crew! You know how you can get a song stuck in your head, well have you ever had just a word stuck in your head??? My college teacher would always bring up Cuisinart (the food processors) and eventually I would just have that word stuck in my head

whitemex

Do you all buy actual paper napkins or do you just use paper towels instead?

Axel

Hey Minnmax! Over the past few days there's been some online drama around a Jabba the Hutt mission being exclusive to the deluxe edition of Star Wars Outlaws. Personally, I've always found all the extras included in deluxe editions of AAA games to be pointless and definitely not worth the money. A few cosmetic items, a mini soundtrack, 3-day early access... that ain't worth 30 bucks! Has there ever been additional content you got through a more expensive edition that felt like a real game-changer to you?

IceHamJello

Ben recently said during a live stream that he hasn't seen the Twilight movies, but has heard all the commentary tracks. It reminded me of how much I miss physical media commentaries. They're almost an early form of podcasting. What lead Ben to listening to the Twilight tracks? I learned from Napoleon Dynamite Uncle Rico is vegan and in the scene where he throws steak at Napoleons head like a football; he's chewing meat but quickly spits it into his hand and drops it on his plate. The sleight of hand is so good I would've never known. Heck, I would've never understood Donnie Darko without the commentary and OMG does it make me love Jake Gyllenhaal as a person. Such a fun, quirky personality. Highly recommend listening to it on YT for Jake alone. Does anyone else have an interesting DVD/Bluray commentary that they've heard?

Sam Worms

Missed joked opportunity: last week when discussing a show where you’d predict what games Geoff Keighley would show at Summer Games Fest, Janet said “we’ll just have to read the tea leaves.” What she should have said was to try to “read the Keigh-leaves” (Hold for groans) Also sorry for another pun.

Joe Kafchinski

How do you move on after finishing a "big game." I jumped around probably 4 or 5 games after finishing Rebirth before I finally settled on something that didn't feel like a letdown. I'm always a little worried I'll ruin whatever I try to play next by measuring it against something so significant. (FYI - I settled on the new Alone in the Dark, which pleasantly surprised me, possibly because I had no illusions that it would be able to stack up to Rebirth.)

thewholehamdamily

What movie are you really hot on that ended up flopping once you showed it to your friends?

Jonah Abraham

Missed joke opportunity: instead of doing last week’s podcast, you and the crew should have simply done the ROCHE ROCHE ROCHE chant for the entire duration on the show.

Jordan Greer

Do you think the successes of the Last of Us and Fallout TV shows will push game makers to hire decent writers?

Aging_Poorly

Haaaaaaay B and the Cs, On Bonus Pod, Haley admitted that Fallout: New Vegas is her current "Game I Feel Guiltiest About Never Having Played." So Ben, Sarah, and Jacob - what's the game that you feel guiltiest about never having played, and do you think that you will ever play it? Haley - what would be 2nd place for you?

Hi minnmax. I need to buy a bed and it's too complicated. Why are some beds $400 and others are $2,000? Got any good bed/bed buying recommendations?

Dustin Davis

What's the most embarrassing or funniest situation where you mistook someone for someone else, in public or online? Like thinking you recognized someone and shouting hey, or sending a message to the wrong person?

Luca Alberti

Hello MM crew! Today I'd like to talk about Children of the Sun and the news websites' urge to deem games as either flops or successes. Last week people started claiming the game flopped due to its low Steam user count, this lead to Devolver releasing a statement THE DAY AFTER LAUNCH reassuring the game sold 5000 copies and it was made by a solo dev. I firmly believe this urge to label games is harmful, as negativity reduces people's willingness to discuss a given topic, thus reducing the spotlight on games, how do y'all feel about this?

Travis in Fargo

Why is it called a laundromat and not a laundry-mat? Can we agree to change this?

Joshua Ayers

Hey crew, Is Elden Ring just Skyrim with better balancing and less bloat?

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, What's something you have intimate knowledge of that makes it hard for you to suspend your disbelief in media? As we all know from the inaugural Doc Lightning, when train cars become uncoupled they lose the air in their air brakes and would come grinding to a halt. Yet countless games and movies have train cars detaching left and right!

Graham Walker

Ok, fun game to see if you can beat me at. Who lives closest to the most famous person. You have to weigh distance and fame to decide a winner. Can anyone beat me- I live within 14 miles of ed Sheeran!

Robert Sullivan

Hey crew, do you have any weird childhood gaming habits that you still live with today? As a kid I never played the original Pokémon games with the sound on and to this day I have never played any Pokémon game with the sound on

Limp Bizquick

Howdy cohort 👋 What’s something funny you said or did recently that you wanted to highlight? I know it’s kind of a faux pas to brag about jokes you made so I wanted to offer up a stage where you can share some recent jokes you made without fear of being thought of as conceited.

Nubbyy

Hey Minnmax, On last week's pod Michael Huber mentioned that he regretted selling some games he at one point owned. This got me thinking, have you ever sold or given away anything that has since appreciated in value? Or have you kept any games or collectibles that are now worth a lot more to collectors? Personally, I definitely regret getting rid of my original gen one pokemon game cartridges many many years ago, however for some reason I held on to my entire pokemon TCG collection. I recently went through and looked up the values for many of my older cards. Although none are of super high value, I found a few that are worth a good chunk of change.

SirCrouchALot

Hey all- We see a lot of book adaptations in film and TV but none are coming to mind for games outside of maybe a visual novel? Do you think it’s possible to make an engaging “non-visual novel” adaptation of a book, and which book would you like to see adapted?

Vilis

Myshuno, MinnMax! What a wild coincidence The Sims 1 came up on the topic list because I just thought of a wild pitch to any present members of the Thirst Council: How many Sims did you have a crush on? Any stand outs? Please Reticulate your Splines to show your work.

Michael Berry

The claymation art style of Harold Halibut is fascinating and it made me think of an old point and click PC title called the Neverhood. It too was all claymation. I actually never played this game as it is not easily accessible for new players to get running; however, it has one of my favorite soundtracks. Here is an example song: https://youtu.be/oFlG7KN6OqY?si=xz73qGDZp-Q1Xqmd Do you have a favorite soundtrack like that? Where you love the music despite never have played the actual game?

MarcusAuralius

My question is simple: who is the PS5 Pro actually for? By most accounts, the previous Pro model made up a fairly modest percentage of the overall install base for PS4. With the PS5 now widely available and without any meaningful price drop on the horizon, is a more expensive and slightly more powerful version really going move the needle? Or is this another PSVR2 scenario in the making?

Braulio Martinez

Hey all! I'm not yet dones with the deepest dive on Rebirth (I'm at Ch 10 and this game is long), but I just wanted to say this is a Xenoblade Chronicles game and Square Enix can't fool me. Ben, the stpry may be different but the gameplay of Xenoblade is pretty much this. Will you play the series now? There is a limit to how many times Kelsey can ask!

ramentaco

The battle has started. Which side are you on? Kendrick or Drake?

Sincerly, Eric

Hello Dear Friends and lovely faces. Sort of a BetterQuest victory segwayed into a question. I've never had any problems created by or caused from drinking, but I did finally have to admit to myself and for myself I had a "Drinking Problem" I could not tell you the last night I went in years without at least one drink. But more times then not it was more then that. With a great struggle I finally was able to go my first day without drinking a few weeks ago now. And honestly, it was all thanks to Allen Carrs "Easy-way to Quit Drinking" book and his Easy Way method. So with a book that helped me a have a new Year ahead of me of Sober living I actually dove into reading more this year then any other year. Besides the panels and other Compuer Loving Cohorts lovely works of writing. Do you all have any good book recommendations? 😃 Thanks!

Fatt Mish

Hello MinnMax friends. Is the complexity of game design coupled with the unification of game engines pushing the graphical narrative that disallows for exploration and creativity within the design elements? In other words are game creators stifled by things that essentially make game design better? I recall lots of games around the GCN/PS2/XBOX that seemed to differ more in their graphical styles. What say you? Mars from MN

Victor Pham

What's your best technique for clearing your mind of your worries?

Tonytheswordsman

Not a question but a follow up to the bathroom talk last week. So I work at Lowe’s currently and the men’s bathroom is genuinely a hazard zone. I’ve seen some of the most horrendo things in there and not to get into the nasties some things that happen that are just weird to me are: men will openly have a phone convo on the toilet on speaker ( usually Buisness), I’ve seen so much not flushed and they have no shame walking away and constantly men will swing the door open violently no care for the potential fellow man that may be on the other side. Granted I’ve also heard horror stories about the women’s bathroom but yeah I will always try to go to the Barnes and noble up the street if I must, it’s clean and quiet.

dingus2k

Hey ya’ll, out of all the alien related media you have experienced, which one seems to most accurately represent your idea of a real alien?

Jeorin

Hey MinnMax crew, I'm of the opinion that mini golf is superior to regular golf. What are some other sports we could miniaturize to improve, and how would you do it?

Preetham Yarlagadda

Hello! Betterquest update! I think about the fact that Ben created a friendship survey on an episode at least once a week. The amount of vulnerability to write those questions and send those out astounds me. My question is did that survey meaningfully affect how you interact with people? Would the other cohorts do such a thing? What questions would they want feedback on?

Victor Jesus Moreno

I finally got around to playing Control and good lordie lord this game is incredible!! I know I'm late to this party but good lord how good this is this game??

Adam Cohen

Hello MinnMax crew. Is the lightsaber the most recognizable movie object ever? I can't imagine anything else even comes close.

Tristan

Missed joke opportunity (another pun). Last week when discussing how Ubisoft Massive are able to launch 2 games in six months, someone needed to say it's because the studio is... Massive...

Adam

Hey all - Nier raises fascinating questions about death and purpose and love, but when I get to the very first question - "Can an AI become advanced enough to be considered alive?" My answer is just "...no" and that's that. Everything else becomes meaningless. I don't care about anything in this story because in my mind none of these characters are alive. Nothing in this world is capable of actually having feelings - they're no more capable of having an existential crisis than my microwave. How can I get past this? ~Adam (FYI this ruins many similar stories for me. And yes, I know Mario and Link aren't alive, but they're alive within their world)

HaulingGas

Greetings folks, I know a few of you have touched on this before, but what career would you have if anything related to videogames was not an option?

Beau!

What are your 3 gaming wishes? All 3 wishes must be personal to you but your last wish must be evil. Ex. Wish 1. Raven Studios is set free and given unlimited funds. Wish 2. Free Radical becomes a studio again and make a sequel to Second Sight. Wish 3. (Evil) Zelda Tears of Kingdom is the last Zelda game ever made. Thanks, you are all the best!

Andrew Clabaugh

Hey Minnmax crew! On the topic of the Sims, it was recently announced that Margot Robbie and her production company are making a Sims movie, with Loki S1 director Kate Herron directing and co-writing with Briony Redman. This has got me wondering - what angle are they going to take for the story? You could go the Barbie/Free Guy/Truman Show route of following a Sim who becomes self aware and tries to break free from their controlled world, but that feels like it would be too familiar (although commercially safe.) If you were given the task of writing this movie, what direction would you take it in? Also taking bets: how much of this thing will be in Simlish with subtitles, and will the tag at the end of the first trailer be a Sim trapped in a pool without a ladder?

Do you have any tips on how to game dealing with tiredness? Do you sometimes nap before you game? Do you always make sure you get enough rest? Are you a caffeine junky? I hate it when I’m excited about getting home early enough to get some extra game time in and then 15 minutes in I’m struggling to keep my eyes open. Curious to hear your thoughts.

Daniel Doran

Would you rather critique a game or celebrate it?

Do you long for a time when mysteries still existed?

In recent gaming legal news, TakeTwo successfuly defended itself from a lawsuit where a tattoo artist's work was featured on LaBron James character model in the NBA 2K game series. The artist, Jimmy Hayden, claimed that the use of his tattoos in the games was copyright infringement. It was deemed the depictions of the tattoos were fair use since LaBron gave the approval for the games to feature his likeness. My question is does this outcome set a new precedent? Could NBA 2K include copywriten tattoo art in its character creator? Could a hypothetical developer make a tattoo art game featuring art from tattoo artists without compensating them as long as they got permission from the people wearing the tattoos?

Vindicated

Hello cohorts! One great thing about MinnMax is you're known for your positive vibes. How do you manage to handle some more serious / negative topics, while still keeping the overall vibe positive? Is it making sure there's a lot more positive to talk about, or is it in format of the show, word choice, or something else?
