Hot Take: Do Christopher Nolan's positive contributions to comic book movies (with the Dark Knight trilogy) outweigh the harm its done by being the springboard for IP owners in many mediums deciding they need to try a dark angle?

You all know each other really well, do you think you could name each other's favorite game?

Hey all, I recently re got into guitar hero on Wii and I’m having a blast. What’s the crews history with guitar hero/rock band and how good did you get?

Apart from Fallout 76 and Cyberpunk, what games improves so greatly they should be re-reviewed in their current, much improved, dare We say glorious, reincarnation of a game with a dismal product at launch. Thank you!

Jaser Helu

Not a missed joke opportunity, but rather a “lost joke”. I can’t tell you the exact episode, or who said it, but I want to say it was Kyle or Leo referring to “going to the big city” (in a game). To which Ben responded: “remember when Babe did it?” to literally no response whatsoever. The reference of course being to Babe: Pig in the City. I however, absolutely cackled and could not believe it didn’t solicit any response. I feel that this happens often, especially to Ben. Can we make this the new trend, as opposed to missed joke opportunities? Let’s remember those lost nuggets that get little to no reaction or response!

Bradley-J

What’s the funnest game?

HoneyBoy

hello Do you have a “my dad works at nintendo” story? heres an example…back around the golden age of xbox I was playing Halo 3 by myself. I usually don’t chat with randos but this person was very vocal during the match, so i decided to plug in my headset and chit chat. Our time playing together was nearing an end. We started talking about halos future. he starts telling me that his brother works at Bungie and that their next big game is called Halo Reach. I had no idea what reach meant at the time and thought it was the dumbest name ever and this kid had a chipmunk voice so i didn’t take him seriously“ so I didn’t believe him but i did remember him….like i remember the fall of reach. anything similar happen to yall?

Hello cohorts! I am wondering what y’all think about how getting a game for free could change how someone perceives and reviews a game. Is this true or does paying full price for a game create a certain level of investment. Love the show bye !

I watched the Game Informer Show in high school, and I was just thinking that there's probably youths watching MinnMax in the same way. How much do you think about your content being watched by young people?

We need to talk about quitting MMOs, as they are the OG live service game, they are the ones that have been around the longest.. as a recovering Eve online quitter (you can never really leave, just stop interacting with the game client) and a player of wow beta that gave up before the pandas rolled in, what is your best /and worst "mmo quitter story"?

Kraven Morcome

Hey MinnMax, Last week you were asked if you were hyped for Metaphore Re Fantazio, the best named game in gaming. I think this week's panel should take a listen to the standard battle theme for the game. I would maybe describe it as a high fantasy auctioneer? Whatever it is, it slaps hard and I can't wait to here the boss themes in this game. https://youtu.be/n3m-imqEmWE?si=TVSgYRzQ-a4Otf-x

Hey all! I'm curious if you all have any insight into why so few books are made video game adaptations? I can only think of Metro and The Witcher, while there are tons of movie and TV adaptations? Do you guys have a book and/or series you'd most like to see get an adaptation? For me it would be The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson

DarkFishDays

It occurred to me that I’ve cried from movies, TV shows, and video games, but never from a board game. Other than crying from laughter that is. I’m wondering if board gaming is too slow paced to have that type of emotional impact? Have any of you cried from a board game, and if so what game?

After the somewhat tepid reception to Resident Evil 3 Remake a few years back, I feel like popular opinion of the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis has gotten more divided, and I can't help but wonder if it's due the remake leaving a bad taste in a lot of mouths. When has a remake, rerelease, or reimagining dramatically changed the popular opinion of the original (be it movie, game, etc cetera)?

Luther S

Hey y’all, What’s a song that you have heard lately that would be the perfect soundtrack for a video game? Recently I heard the song “World_train” by Bullion and instantly thought that this would be the perfect background music for a City builder, puzzle game, or maybe a fast paced platformer! This song pumped me up so much I had to listen to it multiple times! The song takes a second to build, but hits HARD when it gets going. Link to the YouTube video for the song (if you decide to play it!): https://youtu.be/ttiBXakjN-M?si=eBag9iDxD4mANlCX Thanks for the laughs! -Luther in VA

Hi MinnMax crew and Lana (or if you're an Archer fan: LANAAAAAAA), Question for Lana: during the development process for a new game, how often do you have to tell your artists that they need to scrap designs and start over, and what are the most common reasons for having to do so?

mikewearsprada

Good day, Minnimums and Maximums. Generally speaking, judging a book by its cover is a bad way to live your life. But has there ever been a time where you went in on something like a game, movie, album, etc. solely based on the cover and you ended up loving it?

If you were an NPC, what would you want your function to be?

Happy Star Wars CLCs! When I was about 7 my dad and I would play the official Phantom Menace tie-in game. For anyone who’s played it, this game was nonsensically hard and I was terrible at it. One day I got home from school and my dad claimed that he had beaten the game, as proof he loaded me into a save where I was able to gun down darth maul with a laser repeater over and over. This didn’t really make any sense but I never questioned it UNTIL NOW! With the game’s rerelease on PSN I was able to revisit it only to discover something 7 year old me would have killed for, CHEAT CODES! That’s right Star Wars episode 1 the Phantom Menace game has codes for both invincibility and level selection. My illusions have been crushed and now my vague childhood memories have been called into question. So I need a ruling, did my dad cheat in order to get one over on me?

Daniel Conrad

Hello MinnMaxers and Lana! What is a game or a genre of game that you have tried to get into, but something about it just didn’t stick? If that hasn’t happened to you, then what is a kind of game you would like to give a try but never have? For example, I like the idea of enjoying an expansive strategy game like Stellaris or Endless Space, but I keep on bouncing off ’em. On the flip side, I never gave arcade-style bullet hell shootemups a try until a couple weeks ago, when I tried a Touhou game, and now I can’t put it down! Thanks for all the great videos and good vibes! —Daniel in San Antonio

Hello minnmax crew. So by the time you are reading this, Matt Piccatella from Circana (NPD) would have revealed the sales numbers of Final Fantasy 7 rebirth. By all the rumors circulating around before his post, it’s not looking good. Why is rebirth selling worse than both remake and FF16? Is it the name? Did the ending of FF remake put off new players? If the sales are that bad, how would this affect the third game of this trilogy? P.S sorry for breaking Leo with my question on last week’s show.

Lamb Dance

Manor Lords? Botany Manor? Why are there so many Manors in games lately? And when is there going to be WoManor? Consider this a missed joke opportunity if nobody said this on the show already.

Sekiro505

Hellooo First time writing in! There's currently an early access to No rest for the wicked And it seems good so far. My question is what developer do you guys think could do a different style of game than what we are used to. The developers of no rest for the wicked are the same devs that made Ori so it's definitely a little different. In my case I'd love to see From software tackle a fps shooter game and make it their own

SuperCerberus

Question for Lana: how do you find the balance between “best animation” and “most animation?” Far Cry always impresses me for having so many unique takedown, vehicle, and healing animations that change depending on context, and I’m sure it’s hard to account for so many variables while keeping the gameplay feeling smooth.

Jt

Hello all. Describe the feeling you get after completing a great piece of media for the first time. This can be a movie, book, game, etc.

Howdy, Ladies and Ben Last week there was a moment where Ben called out Kyle for calling Huber, Michael a few times which was funny. My question is what if we as a society had to permanently wear name tags so that we knew what we always wanted to be called. Would society be nicer because of it?? Cheers.

Hey gang! What's an unpopular food opinion that you have or a strange food quirk? Maybe a food that almost everyone likes that you hate or perhaps you use an unusual sauce choice with certain foods. Personally, I hate the taste of pumpkin in any form or fashion. Thanks and have a great rest of your day!

Andrew Burnes

We all know going back to old podcasts is fun, but do you ever go back to old magazines? I'm currently reading through a copy of Game Informer from January 1993 which includes a fascinating mix of stuff like Terminator 2 for the original Game Boy getting a 9.5, a short blurb advertising Night Trap months before it set Joe Lieberman's head on fire and led to the creation of the ESRB, and very early-stage reporting of Nintendo's ill-fated deal with Sony on its CD add on for the SNES. That article even references the name "Play Station," which is a pretty incredible pull for early 1993.

Many people joke that the secret ingredient in a recipe they’ve prepared is “love” - but! This begs an important question: Do you think that “love” (i.e. Thoughtfulness, care, etc.) affects the outcome of a dish in a real, tangible way?

Doddscrong

What if developers picked an older or existing engine for a new AAA or AA game and didn’t prioritize graphics. Is this a viable solution to get new games without waiting 6-10 years? Would you as a gamer prefer to take a hit on graphics to have more games? I’d enjoy New Vegas 2 on the first version of the Creation Engine and looked like Skyrim if I could get it next year.

Jason Wojnar

Hey Ben and Friends, I am only just watching last year's Doc Lightning now and I was very touched by Halftip's documentary about visiting Ukraine, my second home. On a related note, I am playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chornobyl entirely in Ukrainian (both voice and text). Fascinatingly, some of the factions still speak Russian in the dub and I am fairly certain some characters speak Surzhyk (a mixture of the two languages with really no defined rules). Especially pre-2022 it would be very normal for me to speak in Ukrainian and someone else would speak in russian and our conversation would not skip a beat. My question is, anybody on the panel ever play a game in another language as a way to practice it and not just for immersion? I also played Resident Evil remake in Spanish and it really helped improve my vocabulary (even though it's just the text and subtitles).

Phil Giarrusso

Hey MinnMax! Question for Lana: When looking over work from your art team, what's your thought process behind offering constructive criticism? Do you find it difficult to strike a balance between letting the artists do what they think is best versus pushing them in a direction that better fits your vision as director?

Seltzer Water

My friends all started playing World of Warcraft again so I ended up resubscribing. This got me thinking, We have been playing this game on and off for 20+ years now. Its pretty special how this game brings my little friend group back together every few years. is there a game that you and your friend group get back to and play again every few years?

RickyWinterborn

I was obsessed with summon animations in JRPGs as a kid. Diablo in Final Fantasy 8 in particular blew my mind, although Knights of the Round from FF7 may have been the most epic. What's your favorite flashy JRPG summon?

Julie Miner

Hey folks! It seems like Minnmax on the whole isn't very keen on fighting games. What about them turns the team off? I personally love the feeling of personal improvement I get from fighting games, and that sort of improvement feels like it would fit in with the theme of Getting Better, so it always felt like a slam dunk to me. Is there interest in doing a series (or new show plus) of cohorts learning a fighting game? Thanks, have a great day!

Neill Smith

Missed joke opportunity that is not a pun! Last week when Ben asked "hey can I spread the good word about a certain game? Is that allowed on this podcast?" Someone should have quipped back "I don't know why don't we ask Cat Quest."

Gbaby

Hey cohorts, I listen to a lot of video game soundtracks when I do work or chores around the house. I have stumbled across some really good youtube playlists that I like to listen to and that have even inspired me to try out new games because of how much I like particular songs. But still it's hard for me to have my own curated playlists because a lot of video game soundtracks aren't easily available or officially supported on music platforms. Do any of you have the same problem or have you found ways to still enjoy some of your favorite video game tunes?

Harrison Holt

Hello folks! What is your favourite example of art that should be felt more than it should be understood, be it music, artwork, film, game, etc?

Jeremy Banks

Hey MinnMaxers - With Eiyuden Chronicle finally coming out (a spiritual successor to Suikoden), it got me thinking about about how we're now full-speed ahead with direct N64/PS1-era inspired games these last handful of years. Even more niche games from that era, like Valkyrie Profile (2019's Indivisible), have received modern homages at this point. Which games from that time (or to extend it, PS2/GCN/Xbox/DC), do you feel deserves a modern reimagining/homage? I would love to see a modern take on Incredible Crisis - maybe the most unique take on a minigame collection I've seen that I'd love to see a modern version of

Michael Berry

What artstyle is an immediate slam dunk with you? I really dig the '2D sprite characters in a 3D world' that was common in the Playstation 1 days and more recently in Tinykin and Born of Bread.

Sincerly, Eric

Hi Lana. Quick question do you follow Super Eyepatch Wolves clothing art/series Crow and the Wolf? As an Animator yourself did you ever listen to the old Let's Fight a Boss Podcast? I guess my real question isn't really a question but a Statement. Did you know if you Google your name one of the first things to pop up is the web page your Mom created for your Engagement announcement "Lana's Home" and it is by far the most sweet thing on the internet and please tell your Mom she is my favorite person now.

Dan from Canada

Missed joke opportunity, last week Huber said his first arcade experience was Mortal Kombat 1 - I don’t know the series well I know it has time travel or resetting time lines so someone should have a joke about Huber playing the 2023 mortal kombat 1 back in the 90s or something - feel free to make a better joke insert here

SenttheProphet

For Lana - when designing an animation, let's say for an attack, who dictates how long the animation will last? Does a game designer come and say this animation must be 0.3 seconds, or is there a negotiation that unfolds between the animator and designer (or developer)

Joshua Ayers

What's the game you were most invested in pre-launch? And how did it turn out? I was a huge Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning stan after seeing it in a Game Informer article- the world, the art, everything clicked. And then the game was a blast too. Was tragic to see how everything unfolded, and still aches my heart whenever I replay it. Re-Reckoning is a real treat.

Ryan Dodson

Hi Ben and Cohorts, recently the game publisher of the NBA 2K series, Take-Two, won a lawsuit brought against them. Tattoo Artist Jimmy Hayden claimed that his artwork was stolen when it was featured on the in-game model of LaBron James. The jury voted unanimously that Take-Two wasn't in violation of his copywrite because James gave permission for his digital likeness. So my question is how do you this this result effects legal precedent? Could a game developer make a hypothetical videogame about painting Banksey artwork as long as they got permission from the person who dug his art out of a wall? Where is the line of ownership of art featured in videogames?

Fatt Mish

Hello fellow youths! With Final Fantasy VII Rebirth not making a big splash and Square Enix not talking publicly about the game yet, do you feel they are happy with how it's selling? Also, in the same vein, will Rebirth's apparent underwhelming sales change Square Enix's attitude towards doing more large scale remakes such as this in the future? Stay snazzy. Mars from MN

BEEFCAKE

You HAVE to get a full sleeve tattoo tomorrow! Or else! Whatcha getting?

Sean

Hey minnmax Now that everyone’s starting to get their new Game informer issues, what’s y’all’s favorite game informer cover? Mine is the cover for xcom: enemy unknown. I was so young when I saw it and it terrified the heck out of me.

Zane Dukes

Is Warcraft 3 the most important game ever made?

Hey. My partner keeps track of which side of the towel they use to dry their butt and makes sure they use the opposite side to dry their face. Is this weird?

Ollie W

G'day co horts, long time listener first time writer What is the strongest enemy from a video game you think you could beat in a fight?

Francisco

Hey minnmax, Some physical copies of older games, like suikoden 2, Def Jam: fight for NY and Pokémon box, are considered to be highly coveted in retro gaming communities. This can be due to factors such as original production amount and eventual cult classic status. If you had to guess, what games of today do you think will be considered holy grails to game collectors in the future and why?

whitemex

When is the content with @chefreactions coming?

Jared Piers

Hey Minnmax, Do you think video games would be better today if we stopped advancing technology around the gamecube era?

CrabPalace

What mechanic from a game do you think was hardest to code? Other than the portal gun.

jacob cummings

Hey minnmax, If you had to challenge yourself to do a copious amount of something for a whole year, what would it be? In two weeks it will have been a year since I challenged myself to read 524 volumes of manga in 1 year (number inspired by the film julie and julia). As of today I have read 624 volumes! That's like reading One Piece 6 times!

DubZe27

Hey MinnMax, Working on a BetterQuest goal of being able to draw like Final Fantasy's Yoshitaka Amano (even knowing Ben will then hate the way I draw). I've hit a streak of drawing 10 days in a row and was wondering if anyone as any tips for some one starting to draw or ways to practice (besides just doing it a lot). Thank you, Will E.

ZF

Hi MinnMax, "It's like a PS2 game" is a line of praise I've seen given to some recent games like Hi-Fi Rush and Stellar Blade. My question for you is what are some actual PS2 games that represent the type of game these comments are referring to? Love and respect, ZF

Josh64

MINNMAX! What are some more recent examples of games where the animation made you stop to appreciate all the work that went into it, I don’t know if I’ll ever get over how the animation of The Last Guardian made Trico feel so lifelike.

Rikimaru

Hey! I fell in love with the show Tokyo Vice on HBO but have never met someone else who has seen it. What's a thing you like but never get to talk about?

Duderado

What's your favorite early-internet slang word? I think "noob" is still pretty funny. Woot!

Steven Sell

On the topic of favorite animations in games, one of my all timers has to be Cuphead! My question is, what is the panel's tolerance for challenging games like Cuphead? Are you willing to see an interesting game through even though it is painstakingly difficult?

SirCrouchALot

Chicago Style Deep Dish, Detroit Style, or NY pizza?

Tess

Hello! I was listening to the GDC Game Music Hall of Fame Medley and wondered, what songs would be in MinnMax's Game Music Hall of Fame Medley?

Ian Miller

Have y'all played chess? Like actually played a match? I always thought it was a old game for old boring people, but to my surprise it's fun and strategic! I looked into it, and it's earliest known origin was a game from 7th century India called "chatarunga." Roughly translated, it means 'four divisions,' or four divisions of military (knight, rook, bishop and pawn). Crazy stuff! My question is: What game from the past 50 years of gaming history will develop and form into the next 'chess,' that people will be playing thousands of years from now? Toodles, Ian Miller

Stephen Rigney

What percentage of people that share the exact same birthday are still alive? I'm sure there is a lovely MinnMax statistician that would enjoy to work this out. I think pretty sensible to do 10, 20, 30...90, 100 years old. A graph would be cool as well. Pretty grim though.

Luca Alberti

Hello MinnMaxers and Lana! What's your go-to sleep position when you want to fall asleep as soon as possible?

Graham Walker

if you could change/update the art style of one game what would it be and why?

Felix davin

Hello excellent everyones! Has your relationship to violence in media and specifically games changed while becoming older adulting adults ? I've been fine for years shooting all kind of people in fps but feel a little... off now. Recently I tried to watch the Fallout amazon show and had to stop because of the gore and pain inflicted. Am I becoming a full on Persuasion adult with Speech skills to the max and no specialty in weapons ? Are we all ? Bisous, Félix.

Ajay Nath

I just finished A Night in the Woods, the dialog was very well written. What other game does this well?

Adam Walters

Hello everybody! I saw the Patreon email asking for submissions for a new Doc Lightning and... I never saw the previous one. I just finished watching it and cannot believe how incredible that was. What a wonderful display of humanity. Thank you to MinnMax for encouraging it and to the community for all of the submissions.

Louise

I tried to explain to my 12 year old nephew what it was like playin 3d an online games for the first time back when I was only a bit older than him. He was total gobsmacked that I thought these things where the best games where goin to get. so my question is 2 fold. 1 what was ur first 3d or online experience wiv games. 2. what's something u have told someone that they just couldn't get their head around

Brady Goeskel

You are all sucked into your favorite open world game as an NPC. What is your side quest that you need the protagonist to help you complete?

Ari

If video game were pro wrestlers who would have beef with who?

Cath

Hi Ben and everyone! Here is your weekly reminder to be kind to yourself and that you are better at what you do than you think. Take a moment to be proud in your and in what you are doing. Ok byeeeee

Scobu

With everyone talking about how people should refer to Michael Huber, it made me think of a time when I got an opportunity to be on a podcast with Brian Shea from Game Informer. I didn't even realize I was doing it at the time, but when I listened to the podcast later, I noticed I was calling him Shea when referring to him. As someone who has listened to Game Informer for years, it just came out naturally since that's how the other Game Informer podcasters refer to him. But thinking about it later, this may have come off weird since I don't know him personally. So do you think Brian Shea thought I was a big ol' weirdo or am I overthinking it?

David Sellers

Question for Lana, did you get to work on anything related to K/DA? How did Riot come up with the concepts for the Popstar skins for the characters?

Edd Gingras

With the lords of the fallen (2023) latest update adding some amazing new features such as loot randomizes, enemy radomizers, change the number of enemies you find in the world and more. What are your favorite free updates developers have put out in games? Are there any you think hurt or ruined the experience?
