Due to schedules and travel, we're recording The MinnMax Show on Tuesday at 7pm Central this week and releasing it at the normal times. With Sony's State of Play also happening on Tuesday at 5pm Central (we'll be streaming our reactions), we won't have a poll for a new episode of New Show Plus this week BUT on Wednesday we'll be airing a New Show Overflow - we revived a lost idea for a show and it's a fun one.

This week for community questions on the podcast, we'll have Ben Hanson, Jeff Marchiafava, Leo Vader, Kelsey Lewin, and Haley MacLean. It's your turn to make the show better by leaving a question, news story, BetterQuest goal, or anything else for us to read on the show as a comment below! We’ll choose our favorite and iam8bit will ship out the great prize below for the winner! We'll stop pulling questions around 8am Central on Tuesday.

On this week’s episode we’ll be talking about...

PlayStation State of Play Highlights

UFO 50

Palworld in legal trouble

Wild Bastards

The Finals Season 4

Everybody at the Backstage Pass tier can watch us record the show live on Tuesday night, with an exclusive pre and post show. The unedited archive will be available to view after the fact. You could do us a favor by subscribing to the audio version of the podcast on iTunes or your favorite podcast app, telling a friend, leaving a review, and subscribing to our YouTube channel!

How, and how often, do you wash your hats?

Daniel Doran

Hey old timers, What’s your favorite piece of furniture? Is it something you use most often or is it something you admire most often? Do you like it because it’s useful or because it’s beautiful?

Maths

With the PS5 Pro reveal and the Switch 2 on the horizon, I've been thinking a lot about how Nintendo is going to talk about their new console. We're at a point with consoles where granular hardware details are inherent talking points, but Nintendo has historically never really used that sort of language. I just can't see a presentation where they talk explicitly about GPUs and frame rates, but assuming the Switch 2 really is just a straight upgrade with no new gimmicks, I don't see what else the marketing could really be. How do you think they'll approach the language around the Switch 2? Can you see Nintendo giving a straight up specs overview or graphics side-by-sides? Also unrelated question, why isn't anyone talking about Crypt Custodian?!

ChazCheeto

Hey Minn and Max. JRPGs are notorious for having 25 year old characters look like they're 55. What's the oldest character you think you've ever played as in a game? Are there any grandparent protagonists?

Travis in Fargo

Would you rather have Danny Trejo’s contact info, or a mystical bowling ball that guarantees at least 3 strikes per game plus free nachos at the concessions stand?

Mootkinstein

Howdy Cohorts, Cheese or Chocolate? Thanks

Caleb Giovannelli

At what point do you stop playing games that you don't intend to finish?

Sam Worms

When you get the option to create a character, do you always model them after a specific person or do you make someone up? I always make my characters look like my wife.

Conner McCabe

Hi CLCs. The best shooting mechanics are discussed all the time, but what is your favorite grenade toss in a video game? Halo 3? Uncharted? CoD?

CaffeineDad

Hey y’all! The last few weeks you’ve danced around this topic, but we need a definitive answer once and for all! If the MinnMax crew were in a fighting game, what would your weapons, fighting styles, and move sets be?

Valeria

We just welcomed our baby boy last month and he’s already a fan having listened to minnmax throughout my pregnancy. My husband and I are already wondering what games he’s going to play. If you could choose an introductory game for a child to start them on their gaming journey what would you choose?

Travis in Fargo

Do you have any clothing items that make you feel beautiful, confident, cool, or straight up sassy?

Adam_CW

What was the last movie that actually scared you? Mine was Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. I’ll never look at haunted asylums the same way again.

Neal McMahon

Hey all, Not a question, but rather a weird observation: the other day I was searching online for MinnMax content via my iPhone’s voice to text feature. Instead of the phone capturing “MinnMax”, it took me to the website for “Minwax” (I will leave the site address below—not dirty) which is a provider of floor maintenance products. Ever think how small of world it is where if you flip the “M” and add an “N”, your name matches another company’s?! Anyway —maybe there’s a marketing collab in store? Any thoughts on floor maintenance products? Love the show! https://www.minwax.com/en?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADjTKrvg2G_2qMakQExFQpf-6X_BW&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoLGHlu-viAMV-F3_AR2WngV3EAAYASAAEgJkZ_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds).

Donald Wieden

Does UFO 50 count for the 2/10s? It's kind of cheating, but I think it should absolutely qualify.

DJ

While thinking about Survivor I have come to the conclusion that Ben Hanson reminds me of Jeff Probst. Both make interviewing/running the show look so effortless. Great questions, gets everyone involved and let's them talk without interrupting.

Travis in Fargo

I haven’t watched much adult animation, but I’ve recently seen Primal, Scavenger’s Reign, and Blue Eye Samurai. While very different from each other, each has a strong aesthetic, memorable characters, and intriguing storylines. Are there any mature animated series you’ve enjoyed that you would recommend?

Victor Pham

Are the characters in Insomniac's Spider-Man too nice to each other?

MakeItUnclear

Due to an unfortunate mixup here at Mossmouth, UFO 55 was accidentally released as UFO 50. That means we owe 5 more games as DLC, and hey look, there just happen to be 5 of you here today. So help us out. What strangely prescient game mechanic, social message, graphical flourish, or gaming trend would you choose as the basis for your retro-style video game?

Jonathan Dinh

Hey cohorts, We all have smells we enjoy for whatever reason and it doesn't always make sense. For instance, I love the smell of a book's pages being fanned or the smell of a newly opened piece of tech. What are some of your favorite smells that might be out of the ordinary?

Thom Blackburn

What's the most significant piece of feedback you've ever gotten professionally?

Travis in Fargo

Are you brave enough to rank every UFO 50 game?!?

BEEFCAKE

You've been in a tragic accident that severed your arms off completely. They can reattach them but for no explanation why, they can't attach them to your torso anymore. Where do you tell them to reattach your arms?

Mitch Krassin

What is the thing that you clean the most and the least in your life (that you feel like should be)?

Luis Pérez

Hey gang, There are many videos online with celebrities listing the 10 items they can't live without, but I think it's better to make it a bit riskier: What's the ONE thing you just can't live without? (Not counting food, water, or other basic human needs.) All the best!

Lanthian

What is the longest period of time that you have gone without knowing what the current time is? I find myself checking my phone or watch often, even when it really doesn’t matter to me what time it is.

David Dubs

Hey Gang, making my way through UFO 50 and It's given me an appreciation of all the "quality of life" improvements we've made in gaming. Are there any games in UFO 50 that made you appreciate a modern gaming comfort? Also Bushido Ball is amazing and I want a full game of it.

Orryn Echols

What’s the longest you’ve gone without gaming, and did the time away from the controller better your life in a significant way?

Josh LaBaw

Anyone have fiber internet? Is Cloud gaming like X Cloud or that Amazon thing working yet?

Shane C

Has a game review ever had a profound effect on you? I will never forget the Second Opinion review from "Ben" (I'm guessing Reeves?) on the original Mass Effect. He wrote: "Mass Effect stopped me dead in my tracks. I'd just chastised one of my companions for doing something stupid, then she looked back up at me with big round eyes full of shame, and I felt an emotion that a game's never drawn out of me before: guilt." That grabbed me so hard I knew I had to play this game immediately, and it has been my all-time favorite game series ever since. Are there any game reviews that have really stuck with you over the years?

Kraven Morcome

Hey MinnMax, Famously, a Costco executive once suggested raising the price of their $1.50 hot dog meal because of how much they were losing on it. The CEO, John Costco himself, responded "If you raise the fucking hotdog, I will kill you." What suggestion would have leadership of the console manufacturers threatening to kill their employees? Would lowering the retail price of a 10 year old Nintendo game spark Doug Bowser's Fury?

Chandler

Hey Kelsey, Your book was great! Can you give recommendations for other books? Preferably non fiction video game books, but I'm up for any genre if you feel strong enough.

Christian Jimenez

Hi, Bought Prince of Persia's The Lost Crown DLC last week and was really annoyed that it resets you back to square one. Just like Elden Ring, the DLC takes place in a shadow world but all those upgrades and power-ups you got in the base game are no longer available. That feels very cheap when you spend a lot of time in this challenging game collecting them. What other DLCs in the past have left a sour taste in your mouth?

Jesse Repak

WHAT THE HECK IS A SALAD??!! My circle of friends has this multi-year running debate, and we deeply need the power of the MinnMaxers to solve it once and for all! The answer seems obvious, but don't be deceived! Here are just a few of the salads that have left us in tears when trying to define this elusive foodstuffs: Tuna salad Macaroni salad Fruit salad Wedge salad (single ingredient in a giant slab) Taco salad breaks my brain completely Roast vegetable salad Good luck guys. The world is counting on you

Jeorin

Howdy cohorts, In the game Star Wars Outlaws, there's a cool encyclopedia entry for each planet that lists 6 to 8 prominent animals from the planet. If you had to pick earth animals to go in our Outlaws encyclopedia entry, what ones would they be?

BIG!!!!HERB!!!!!!

Question for Haley; are Japanese patent laws much different from American patent laws?

JG

Hey CLC’s, with the upcoming anniversary meet-Up, will you be bringing BobBuel’s Queensblood cards for an irl game? Perhaps an easier way for Hanson and Garcia to settle their differences rather than a race (which Janet would obv win).

Jeeo Banogy

Hey MinnMaxers! What is your longest sneeze-attack record? Personally I've only ever gone to a maximum of 4, I have a roommate that can break around 8 if it's rainy outside, and my sister used to regularly hit double digits during sneezing fits! Hope you guys don't suffer from Fall allergies and bring on the pumpkins!

Joshua Ayers

What's the most excited you've ever been for someone else to have played a game or series you love? I work in education and just got a job at a new school, the kids like to say things like "skibidi" and "sigma" so I, naturally, showed them Sigma from back in my day (Mega Man X's). One said "Mega Man? Nah, I like Kingdom Hearts" and I've never been happier.

RickyWinterborn

Is "restoring the power" the most boring/overused video game mechanic? And inversely, is moving faster after moving slowly for a long time the best video game mechanic?

Toke F.

If you had to cut an old shirt from your closet with a scissor, which one would it be? (Is it ugly? old? Maybe you got it from someone else?)

Tess

If there's a ladder do you climb it normally or mash jump?

Jason Wojnar

You guys eat buckwheat? As a New Yorker I didn't have it until I was 23 and moved to Eastern Europe and now I eat it almost every single day.

Travis in Fargo

It’s time for MinnMax to answer the question that has been burning up the internet for months: do you wash your legs?

Lorenzo Flores

What’s the last video game that made you cry?

Hovercow

Hey Crew, What game makes the best cosmetics/skins in your opinion? Paid or otherwise. Everytime I boot up The Finals I'm blown away by the creativity in their weapons and outfits. Often times they have custom animations like a revolver made to look like a big stick that you whittle away at or a flamethrower made to look like a super soaker. I find myself itching for my wallet in this game more than any other and I'm generally adverse to micro transactions. On the free end, I really got into collecting the apparel in The Division back when that came out. I frequently found myself audibly excited to pick up a new beanie or jacket and inversely feeling nothing when getting a new weapon or really any item with stats associated with it. Maybe I just like playing dress up in a game where that isn't the main focus.

LlorchDurden

Fast forwarding a lot, let's say Palworld wins. If given the chance, what Nintendo franchise would you do better and on Steam? Elden Ring size Kirby anyone?

StillGotGame

Hey guys. With the Switch having now released 7 years ago, it seems that time has led us to think of it’s successor as basically a more powerful switch. But that’s not very Nintendo is it? What do you think the chances are of a trademark Nintendo gimmick making its way into the new console? The switch 3D perhaps? That way they could resell us 3DS games. Reselling us games is as much in their DNA as left field ideas

Blazingscourge

Are we putting too much stock in GTA VI “Saving” or “Reviving” the gaming industry? Whether it’s console sales or game sales it seems to come up.

ItIsBGun

It's officially fall! What's the falliest fall thing you're falling for this fall?

resident eva

Hi everyone! In the past, Leo has spoken about using the Pomodoro technique to help with productivity. Do the rest of you have any productivity tips/tricks? and Leo: do you still use a Pomodoro timer?

Oliver Watts

Hi Cohorts, We often hear about how games can be too long, like in the case of AC: Valhalla or Rebirth. As a consumer, I celebrate long games that I can really live in for months at a time. But is this criticism just a result of the nature of content creators/reviewers having to keep up to date with recent releases and a long game can make that extra difficult? (Except for Haley, I think she actually may have a time turner).

Mcdoeswell

Should Pokémon within the lawsuit lay claim to any Palworld creatures that should then be added to future Pokémon games?

Greekanese

The world has suffered an apocalypse and you have been left to fend for yourself. It has been days since the last time you have seen another person, but as you enter a building you figured was abandoned, you find one of your fellow MinnMax cohorts. Which cohort do you most wish to encounter under these circumstances?

Aging_Poorly

Since it's been awhile since I've heard a game of "Nolan, Colon, Double, or Trouble" from BobBuel, I've come up with its younger cousin: "Baker, Raker, Breaker, or Faker". Contestants have to decide whether a game: 1) features voice actor Troy Baker ("Baker"); 2) RAKED in the cash by selling over 3 million units worldwide on its original consoles ("Raker"); 3) BOTH features Troy Baker AND sold over 3 million units worldwide (Baker AND Raker, i.e. "Breaker"); or 4) NEITHER features Troy Baker NOR did it sell over 3 million units worldwide on its original consoles ("Faker"). Games are below, answers DMed to Hanson on Discord. Game 1 (the gimmie): The Last of Us - PS3 Game 2: Dead or Alive 5 - PS3 + X360 Game 3: Mass Effect - X360 Game 4: God of War Raknarok - PS4/PS5 Game 5: Batman: Arkham Asylum - PS3 + X360 Game 6: Persona 4 Golden - All consoles and Vita Game 7: The Wolf Among Us - All consoles Game 8: Call of Duty Black Ops 3 - PS4+XOne

ItIsBGun

I noticed restaurants are calling sandwiches "handhelds" nowadays, which got me thinking... If these handheld consoles were sandwiches, what would they be? Switch, Switch OLED, Steam Deck, Playstation Portal, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Playdate.

Poofydoo

Now that Pokemon Co has won a 15 million lawsuit against Chinese mobile game developers and will likely win more on the Palworld lawsuit, will Pokemon use any of this money on their next game to run better then 10 frames per second?

Kevin Meisinger

What foods do you have an absolute brand loyalty to? No matter how expensive it gets or how broke you are you won't compromise and get a different brand. Mine is Kewpie Mayonnaise.

Fancygraham

Hey MinnMax! Even before the updates, No Man’s Sky has always seemed so appealing to me, but I just haven’t taken the time to try it out. What’s a game that’s seemingly “made for you”, but haven’t played or whatever reason? Thanks! Graham

Luca Alberti

Hello crew! What's the last game that had you go: "man, they really nailed this mechanic" and what was said game mechanic?

Tanner Hoisington

Kelsey sticking with the new Mana game reminded me how much the Cohorts must be playing each week. What do your gaming schedules look like? How much are you able to squeeze in on a typical day? I need to learn what kind of numbers I need to be pulling to be ready for the two tens.

Fancygraham

What if Balatro was released on mobile first and then came to other platforms later. Do you think it would have been just as successful?

Mike Lynch

What is the oldest unwatched video in your YouTube Watch Later playlist? (Mine is first on the list: Black Angel. A short film by Roger Christian, set decorator for Alien and Star Wars. I urge you to go give your video a watch and not wait a decade like I have).

HelloAndre!

Hello Everyone. Fall is right around the corner. Describe your perfect comfy day. What are ya gonna watch, play, drink, eat and wear?

HelloAndre!

I bought the Witcher several years ago back and only recently got around to playing it. It’s my retroactive game of the year? Now that time has passed, what is your game of the year for 2015, almost 10 years ago. Has it changed since?

HelloAndre!

With the New Switch about to be announced (eventually) What can they do to screw this up? Pitch that crappy product to me. Who ever pitched the worst plausible idea win a brand new……thing!!!!

Qax

Everyone is either a vampire or a werewolf. who's who?

Adam Castellanos

Hello everyone, I watched the movie “Past Lives” this weekend and it just got me thinking about a bunch of life stuff. The question I have for you all is have y’all ever had that oh I have it all figured out moment or this is where I am meant to be in life moment? Is it possible to ever feel like you have it all figured out? Thank you for the podcast.

Phillipe Bosher

Hi everyone, long time first time: last week one of you mentioned that the new voice actor for Frank West kinda threw away your favourite line in the game. So my question to you all is this: do you all have any particular favourite minor characters in a game that you love thanks to their voice performance, or particularly memorable line reads that have stuck with you?

Devin B

My toddlers first experience with Mario was the Mario Movie. I showed her Super Mario World on my SNES and she said "that's not the real Mario, silly!". I don't know how to feel about Chris Pratt being THE canonical Mario in her mind. Anyway, are there any games franchises you grew to love from content/merch outside of their original video game format?

McGreevy

The classic question of "if you can wipe a game from your memory to play for the first time..." has an objectively correct answer and it's Outer Wilds. How about kinda the inverse of that question, is there a game you love, but if it was wiped from your memory you think you would probably hate it, playing it for the "first time" now? (Sneaky bonus question for the cohorts & listeners: why aren't you playing The Finals? Don't you know it's free?!?)

Cath

Hockey is back! Haley do you have a hockey team you follow since Halifax doesn’t have a LNH team (also same question for the other minus the Halifax )

Sekiro505

Hello Minnmax Quick question, will there be a test chamber or replay type of shows coming to the Minnmax channel? Or is it just wishful thinking :(

Tan

Please rank these video game protagonist names from worst to best: Jet Brody (Fracture) Deacon St. John (Days Gone) Edge Maverick (Star Ocean 4) Delsin Rowe (Infamous: Second Son) Cal Kestis (Jedi Fallen Order)

Chris Pelley

What games can you play right now, but you're intentionally holding off? I really didn't like the first Star Wars Outlaws forced stealth mission so I'm probably giving it a month plus to for patches/tweaks. Slightly-related: what's the last game you bought full price at launch and in retrospect you wish you would've waited on?

John

So…Rubbernecking?

Fatt Mish

Good day, cohorts! What are all of your favorite mascots? I'm not just talking games here, either. Cereal, sports, other foods, random brands, insurance company characters, toy stores, etc. Who are your memorable goofy advertising friends from today and your childhood? Take care!

landsealion

I recently played Chants of Sennaar and, without planning for it, watched Arrival soon after. The two, being about learning languages, paired well together. Do you have other game and movie pairings that you feel go well together?

landsealion

Not sure if you still do these, but missed joke opportunity when Ben asked Leo about how this whole thing operates, Leo could've faked not understanding the question because he was busy playing Peglin as Jacob likes to do in some meetings.

PancakeTime

If you're MinnMax, what stats are each of you minmaxing? What's your dump stat and your best stat? (Stats can be anything, not just STR/INT/DEX, etc. go wild)

John Scovic

I'm VERY much enjoying UFO 50, but have been very selective in recommending it because I know most of my friends will be frustrated by it (even if they acknowledge how cool it is)- in honor of UFO 50, what is the game you most respect without actually personally enjoying?

Cody A

In the spirit of UFO 50. Can you pick a developer or publisher, and add one game from multiple console generations into your dream collection?

Chris Cwik

Hi MinnMax, how do we feel about pinball? Are Ben or any of the cohorts big fans? Have any favorite tables?

Justin Dale

Pretty simple one here, what’s the minimum ingredients for your tacos at home? For me it’s protein and cheese. My wife thinks I’m crazy.

PJZ64

What if you were all Dr. Wily's Robot Masters in the Mega Man universe? Hanson Man... Marchiafava Man... etc. What would be the name of the weapon you would give to Mega Man upon your defeat, and what would it do? (If you'd like some examples, Magnet Man gives Magnet Missiles, which hone in on enemies; Wood Man gives the Leaf Shield, which tosses up a barrier of leaves; and Guts Man gives the Super Arm, which allows Mega Man to pick up and throw blocks.)

Chris Marsh

What is an old game that you have a fond memory of? Mine is when I was in high school, a game called Marvel rise of the imperfects came out. I remember stopping by the local wal mart on my way to school to see if they had put it out yet, but they hadn’t. So after school, I stopped and got it, and man, for some reason that game was everything I wanted. What about you guys? Any game from your teen years hold an odd place in your heart?

Vilis

Haldo! In the interview with Eric Kozlowsky and Max Spielberg, Eric mentioned a desire to make a Witcher style game based on Vampire Hunter D, which he is 100% correct on and I'm genuinely shocked that project hasn't been greenlit before now, but my question is: What property which is mostly in book format should be a video game but isn't?

Derek Achoy

If Shaq accidentally stepped on your Switch while he was running after a basketball, do you think it would still be functional, and would you and Shaq still be friends

Thomas Hoster

With your recent meet ups being at local breweries, what’s the crews favorite kind of beers? Blondes, Brown ales, stouts, ipas etc?

Dusty Beaman

Since we all know there are multiple universes out there all at different frequencies, in how many universes has the "other" Jeff M finished Red Dead 2? 50%? 23%? 81%? You tell us

Brooke Gossard

With an upcoming trip to Hawaii, I've been thinking of what to get for souvenirs. Something small like a magnet or keychain? The local food and/or drink? Or maybe local art. So I ask y'all what you usually get for souvenirs and what was your favorite one from any trip that you went on.

Phelix Diaz

Ben, how do you think Megalopolis will perform in the box office? Based on your answer: What is the Megalopolis of Gaming?

CANAS1AN

Hey MinnMaxer Parents, As someone expecting their first in Feb 2025, what sort of items do you wish you put on your registry that were lifesavers after your kid was born?

awildbrysen

What's your sizzling hot gaming hot takes?

Tonytheswordsman

WAZZUP! What’s an old show you’re watching now? And what are you loving about it? Currently watching the Dick van Duke show and man is it great before bed show.

Ollie Clay

Hey gang, aside from the wonderful Charles, where are all the young people in the industry you’re in? Is there a lack of mentorship in games media?

micspam

Question for Ben and Leo: When is the Funko Fusion full playthrough dropping?

Parker Aden

Yay for Haley being on this episode to talk about the legal trouble Palworld is facing! Excited to hear her take on that. Meanwhile, my question is what is the dumbest or weirdest story you remember hearing throughout your lifetime in regard to something someone was getting sued for? Did you follow that story to see what the verdict was?

Wade Caywood

Imagine you had a skill tree and someone approached you with a respec token. How would you respec your life? For example, you could take all your jump points away and put them into reading skills so that you can read fast and remember every page of every book.

resnet

Hey MinnMax. One of my favourite thing in the Persona games is that each of the major arcana in a Tarot deck is represented by a character who embodies that arcana in an interesting way. For example you can meet a doctor who embodies Death, or a politician who embodies the Emperor. If you were a major NPC in a persona game, which arcana do you think you are? They are listed here for convenience: Fool, Magician, High Priestess, Empress, Emperor, Hierophant, Lover, Chariot, Justice, Hermit, Strength, Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, Tower, Star, Moon, Sun, Judgement, Fortune

Cole kreider

Hello MinnMax, I’m loving Astro Bot, but I can’t play more than 10-15 minutes at a time because the game shuts my system off and erases my save. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this game just too beautiful to run on my PS5? Can I borrow one from the MinnMax cohorts?

allnitediner

Hey Cohorts. Long time listener, first time subscriber/question-asker. When talking about the upcoming "Winter Burrow" on a recent Bonus Pod, Janet made a comment on how the combination of survival and "cozy" isn't done much given the stress of a survival game vs. the low-stakes of a cozy game. Then I thought about how SO many people I know find the "relaxing" things you do in many cozy games (farming, crafting, building up a home, etc.) to be really stressful! Which got me wondering if maybe cozy and survival are actually more complementary than they seem at first. So my question is: what sub-genre or type of game would you be most curious to see done in a "cozy" way?

demo_sphere

Has anyone thought about replaying or trying out any of the games featured in Astro Bot? Me personally, I decided to download the game Humanity, because the dog bot in Astro Bot caught my attention.
