Hot off the announcement that Capcom is reviving the series, for the next Deepest Dive we're going back to 2001 and playing the first Onimusha game! The samurai-focused action/adventure game takes a lot of inspiration from the Resident Evil Series, so dive in and let's unpack this thing together. This will be a two-part game club and we need your comments on Patreon here to help fuel the discussions. The game is available on all systems thanks to the 2019 remaster, but you're welcome to play the original PS2 game as well. MinnMax's Ben Hanson, Kelsey Lewin, Jacob Geller, and Kyle Hilliard will be joined by Easy Allies' Michael Huber for the discussions.

We're collecting your comments on the first half of the game (stop when you see a big green force field) here on Patreon on Friday, 1/24/25. It's apparently not a very long game.

The discussion will be airing on YouTube and in the bonus podcast feed for $5 supporters on 1/27. We'll be completing the game the following week and looking for your final thoughts on February 1st.

A huge thank you to everybody for supporting MinnMax and The Deepest Dive format, we're excited to tackle another retro game. Any help sharing the Onimusha announcement online is appreciated! https://youtu.be/pH4yg_hhszc

This will be cool! I’ve always heard of it but never played it myself.

Oh I'm in there. Although now I feel like a fool for not picking it up when it was on sale recently.

Bruh!! Hell Yeah! I’m so pumped for this! Always wanted to play it and with the new game coming down the road I was going to check it out anyway. Super solid choice and great foresight for something people will want in the future.

Alexander Scheck

Part of me wishes this was for Onimusha 3 but I understand that it is much harder to get a hold of and play nowadays. Would love to see all the Jean Reno love!

One of those games that's been on my shelf for years that I've always meant to play. I'm in!

BearCommando

Alright guys, I was getting ready to drop the sub for a bit (I had like six Patreons I support and was going to rotate/ cut back). But since we are amonth away from Yakuza, this Gameclub convinced me not to make Minnmax one not one of the cuts. Congrats to Minnmax, The Filmcast, and 404 for surviving the recent round of cuts.

Cole kreider

Downloaded to the PS5 last night and played for a bit. My first time playing so this will be fun.

Bo Joiner

I’m excited you guys are doing this one! The Onimusha series has always been special to me. This will be a fun one to listen to!

DTyoungster

Just got to the stopping point! Took me about an hour and half to realize you can block and switch weapons without going to the menu.. 😅 Really enjoying it so far though!

DiggingTrapHoles

I beg you ben please if there is any hope in heaven of having Suzi The Sphere Hunter on this one for even a bit of it. She is amazingly well versed in this game and Capcom in general. I'd love her input on the deepest most in depth dive on this game.

David Edgar

Excited. I've been meaning to play this game since 2001. I got a PS2 on launch day my first year in college. Not sure how I missed this one. Started it last night!

Calltire

How far in exactly is the force field? I fear I may have gone pass that point already

ItsKayJayBee

Jumping in on this for sure, looking forward to experiencing a game club for the first time and hearing everyone's thoughts.

Noah Watkins

Also it says unsupported on Steam Deck but I’ve only noticed the opening cutscene running poorly. I just got a little past the break point and I’m enjoying my time. Can’t wait for the discussion!

This will be my first Game Club and I’m psyched to finally being able to participate! When I first saw the announcement I missed the part where I can play the remaster so I’m using an emulator on a Series S, with a PS5 controller smh. Just got to the stopping point and having a blast so far. I didn’t think I’d be able to go back to tank controls in 2025 but here we are! Like riding a bike lol.

CertainlyCity

Just here to make sure that the most common comment is about that damn sliding block puzzle with the time limit.

So excited for a retro game! Downloaded and played to the stopping point last night and had a blast! Can anyone remind me where to leave the comments though??? The last Deepest Dive I participated in was the RE4 remake and I vaguely remember a google doc-

Hey folks, three things! 1. Playing through this game for the first time feels very odd. The only Onimusha game I'd played before this was "Onimusha Blade Warriors". That spin-off fighting game. It's weird feeling so familiar with characters and visuals, but having no clue what the core gameplay of this series was like. 2. I initially didn't look at the controls and assumed the game would tutorialize the most important stuff. Nope! Almost haflway through the game and I just found out I didn't have to comb through menus so much. The shortcuts make things so much easier - for swapping between different swords, switching to the bow, viewing the map, etc. 3. A timed slide-puzzle is diabolical. I failed that sequence a couple times before I could solve it. There was a silver lining having to repeat the cutscene and go through the switch room though, it let me see the treasure chest that I could backtrack to. Got the Holy Armor out of it!

Those demons are knarly. Everytime I pick up a journal, I have a macabe excitement to read about those nasty guys and their blood rituals.

I love those three dufuses that lock you in with the monsters in the beginning. A lit of the NPCs feel like comic relief and I love them
