What's the best Yakuza karaoke song?

Palo

You can only pick one game with 'Mario' in the title and that is the only Mario game you are allowed to play for the rest of time. Which are you going with and why?

Matthew Byerwalter

What is the absolute worst meal you've ever had? I once got meat loaf from a mom and pop place that tasted like it was scraped off a radiator. The waitress stopped by later to ask how it was because apparently no one ever orders it.

Neal McMahon

Hey all, What would be a bigger acquisition by Sony: Capcom, From Software, or Square Enix? Personally while I think no one can deny the hot streak that Capcom and From soft have been on, from a pure library and IP perspective, I think Square has them beat. What are your thoughts?

Travis in Fargo

What has been the strangest or most memorable interaction you’ve had playing video games online with random people?

RiskyChrisP

What’s the last thing someone said that stuck with you? Recently I had a friend say, “Sabrina Carpenter could write a sonata, but Bach could never write Espresso.” Profound.

Travis in Fargo

Are the Tetris pieces good guys or bad guys?

Crazydude

Yakuza series has done zombies, pirates, and samurai spin offs. Can you come up with the next spin off?

Neal McMahon

Hey all, Do we need to see more (working) mirrors in games? I remember the first time I saw a dynamic mirror in Duke Nukem back in the 90s and thought it was so cool. We see it a bit more in games today but not nearly enough in my opinion. Is this still a technical limitation of some kind? What are your favorite mirrors in games?

NonBinaryBomb

Hi team! Following up on last week's AI discussion, what's something outside of gaming that you wish you knew more about? For me, it's art preservation and the ways in which old paintings are restored.

RickyWinterborn

Name a game you'd like to see with the eras switched, for example Breath of the Wild as an N64 game and Majora's Mask as a Switch 2 game.

Shakenbake67

With the news of Monoliths Wonder Woman game being cancelled, what year if ever do you think we will see a game with the nemesis system implemented again? Follow up questions, why are Warner brothers the scum of the earth for patenting an idea? They can kick rocks

SuperCerberus

How have you learned from a failure in your personal or professional life and used it grow as a person?

Cath

What are the new starters for Pokémon AZ? Still the water fire grass or something mixed up? What would they look like? Name them!

VMEArcana (Very Much Earthed Arcana)

One of the many things I find hilariously serious about the gritty metroidvania “Kong: Survival Instinct” is the warning at the beginning of the game warns that game contains giant monsters, death, and losing contact with your family. What is the most memorable content warning you’ve read? Are there any content warnings that get you excited about playing a game?

Pelicanman

My girlfriend has never liked video games, but after a recent trip to an arcade has, surprisingly, discovered she loves lightgun games. Do any of you like lightgun games and, if so, have you ever found a good solution to play lightgun games at home?

AlexTheSnood

If the MinnMax crew were suddenly tasked with being a pirate crew, what role would each member serve on the high seas?

Lauren

I loved the Pew Pew Bang Bang podcast, especially when the siblings were invited onto the show! I wanted to know what games the other MinnMax cohort members played with thier siblings and any that really brought out a rivalry?

Chandler

How important do you think the community question section of the podcast is to how well you know your fellow cohorts?

Swansonge

What is the best video game title? I realize this might be too big a question so what’s the first thing so what’s the first thing to pop into your head?

Josue

What is your middle name and why you hate it?

Montequilla

Hey cohorts, back in 2011 my PS3 got the "red light of death" and stopped working. Since I couldn't spend more money on another one at the time, I opened it up to see if could fix it. After some trial and error, I found that using a hair dryer to blow hot air into the fans of the PS3, allowed it to turn on and work normally for a few hours. It seems counterintuitive, but I was able to keep it alive for another year, doing this every time I wanted to turn it on, until it finally gave up completely. My question is, have any of you had any consoles or other tech that you've kept alive with some unconventional methods?

Onlinesquid

I saw a reddit comment talking about how good a mass effect 3 multiplayer meets helldivers 2 game would be. Do you guys have any two games you would love to see just mashed together?

Sean

Hey minnmax, Recently I’ve started being able to hear myself blink. So what little thing in your life has added to your daily torment?

RynaGoGo

Howdy MinnMax. I was shocked to learn that Backstreet Boys has more monthly listeners than *NSYNC. It truly shook me to my core. Everyone knows that *NSYNC is the better band. Which of the boy bands from the before times did you vibe with the most? (BSB has 22.2M monthly listeners while NSYNC has only 16.6M, O-Town with an embarrassing 970.3K a month)

Zachary Sweet

No question, just wanted to say that the Retro Game Treasures video was great! It's a wonderful format and I hope to see more of them in the future! PS: you're right Hanson, it's a crime this format wasn't used in the GI Game Vault.

Alex Lovendahl

Is there a perk you always take in a skill tree or RPG? I will almost always grab increased sneak attack, even if the game is nominally not a stealth game, just in case there's forced stealth later. I also will always take a healing spell, even if I'm not doing a lot of spellcasting otherwise.

Shane C

Two weeks ago, Haley asked who was going to write the "Wowed by Avowed!" headline. She and Ben both guessed Polygon, but I'm afraid the answer we were looking for was Aftermath. Aftermath, ladies and gentlemen. (https://i.imgur.com/f0zNwHf.png)

Daniel May

Hi guys, I've been digging through Avowed and found playing it is like eating really rich cake. Both are really dense and I (personally) can only take so much before I feel I need to put it down. What games, if any, do you feel is your dense cake and can only be played for a bit at a time?

IdentityCrisis

Hey Cohorts! What's your favorite (nonviolent) mechanic in a AAA game that really enhanced your enjoyment of the game's story? For example, I've been thinking about Alan Wake 2 lately, and how the Mind Place/Writer's Room really made me appreciate the story more. It was fairly simple, but made me feel like I was actually connecting the dots and in the characters' heads in a way few game have since. Love your work 💙

Jon Grizzle

Hey MinnMax! Go with me on this "Journey"........ All jokes aside, two of my favorite games of all time are "Journey" and "The Pathless". While I love them both deeply, Journey feels like a game I feel no need to play again, but I love to see others play through it for the first time. On the other hand, I've done a yearly replay of The Pathless because I find it's gameplay loop more engaging. Do you guys have a favorite game you play over and over? Or do you maybe have a game that you love seeing other people experience for the first time?

Mike Lynch

Have you ever held back from sharing mundane pop culture info because the group you're with will think you're a maniac?

Arturo Perez

If you had to pick a bad name for the Swicth 2, what would it be? Mine would be the "Nintendo Click", perfect for showcasing the mouse joy con, while making the customar base think is just a new peripheral (like the wii u lol)

Brandon H

I have been on a mission to play games from the past decade that I've missed. I recently played God of War (2018), Ragnarok, and Valhalla. Have you heard of these games? This might be a hot take, but I thought they were great! But seriously, what would get you most excited for the future of Santa Monica Studio? Option 1 - Kratos goes to (fill in the blank locale) and fights their gods Option 2 - Loki standalone game Option 3 - The rumored Remake of God of War 1-3 Option 4 - New IP

Brandon Scott

Does the grimore from Avowed have a chance at "best thing" this year? Hot swapping between spells so quickly is much more fun than opening up a wheel and selecting the spell as per usual.

cassidy

Howdy y'all! I wanted to ask, how do each of you deal with staying awake and attentive throughout your day? Do you drink coffee, take a nap, do some short exercises? What's your secret? :P

LlorchDurden

Balatro got PEGI12 (it was 18 cause poker) AND on GamePass this week! Can Balatro still go strong in 2025? Also did everyone in the crew complete the quiz from PPB? We wanna know who is who!

JG

Hey CLCs, I’m in the final episodes of my yearly Game Query listen-through. Being the (to put it lightly) *fringe* podcast that it is, there are lots of interesting views presented, which are firmly baked in the industry’s culture around the recording time. My question is two-fold: what do you guys think has stayed the same the longest, and what opinions have shifted drastically. For example, even in the early episodes there is talk of AAA being unsustainable. Whereas in one of the final episodes, Maclean talks about looking forward to seeing AI implemented into new games! Thanks guys, never stop sniping!!!

KDArslan

The Museum of Mechanics: Lockpicking (Dim Bulb Games, 2022) is a game that consists entirely of an interactive exhibition all about lockpicking minigames throughout video game history. What do the cohorts think about digital museums like this? Bonus: what other widespread game mechanics deserve their own museum?

Tanner Hoisington

My local game store openly sells modded consoles and game carts like the Everdrive that contain an entire platform's library. I'm curious what Kelsey's stance is on that as a game store owner, and if the rest of the cohorts have any experience with these aftermarket products? I'm kind of surprised they can sell it!

Duderado

What's a game you know you'd like if you played it but for are holding off for one reason or another? I know I'd like Spider-Man 2 on PS5 but it's past its time in the spotlight and doesn't feel like a priority anymore, so I'm fine waiting for a sale or gaming drought.

Xavier Perez

Hey Minnmax crew! During last week’s bonus pod, Haley, Leo, and Cobysoft Joe were talking about what makes choices in a video game good. Leo talked about valuing choices by the weight of the decision, which he thought was how long it takes you to make that decision. It immediately made me think of Fire Emblem 3 Houses. I put my switch down and spent 24 hours debating whether to do the Crimson Flower or Silver Snow path. What choice in a video game took you the longest to make?

Tommy Carver-Chaplin

Hi computer lovers. What unusual item always features in your satchel / rucksack no matter where you go? I am usually roasted for having both sun lotion and a sun spray despite living in bleak and grey England, regardless of the weather

resident eva

hi cohorts! if you could obtain any 1 skill from a video game in real life what would it be? for me it's a tie between the Shapeshifting in Prototype and +2.5% Frost Damage in Path of Exile. Thoughts?

BEEFCAKE

What's the last Hobby you quit?

TwilightShadow

Howdy MinnMax Cohorts! First off, congrats to the Pew Pew Bang crew on the launch of the new show! It got me thinking, “what are some subcommunities in gaming that MinnMax show crew are less familiar with, and which would you like to learn more about? For example, LGBTQ community, war game role play, speed runners, etc.”

Luketheman5

Hello dear Minnmax, I work in an elementary school and one day, a coworker of mine took one of my hot cross buns from the fridge without asking or apologising. Naturally, the response to this was to spend the next two weeks randomly logging into their printer queue and cancelling all their upcoming print jobs without them knowing. The thought of them having to walk all the way back to their desk to reprint 5 documents always makes me giggle. You may read this story and scorn but we are all human. I need to know; what is the pettiest thing you’ve ever done for revenge?

Eliinspace

I've been thinking about Rings of Power a lot recently. Not the TV show, but the Sega Genesis game. When I was a younger I sold it and some other gaming stuff to get money to get other newer games. Anyway I recently bought it again, and it got me thinking about all the other games and gear including the Game Gear I use to have. Do y'all have any regrets for selling your games, and is there any you just had to buy again?

Jacob Mazanowski

What is your favorite thing in real life to gamify? My wife and I have gamified our savings and I love making weekly checklist for that sweet “quest” for the week

Alec Guenther

Hello MinnMax, If you could go back in time and stop one invention from being invented with a guarantee that it'll never be reinvented, what would it be and why?

Jan Sovis

Hey Minnmax, I am a gamer dad, and from what I know about you, there are some gamer dads among you too. Any tips how to play games while you're doing 9-5 and spending time with family? Steamdeck is great, and games with short rounds like Helldivers 2 and Hades 2 are great, but it doesn't scratch the JRPG itch. I'm loving Metaphor but it's frustrating to see minimal progress. Any tips for games or how to handle gaming in these times? Thanks

Jason Wojnar

I recently got a job as a translator and accent coach for a production company where Ukrainian actors speak English. As you may or may not know, sets have weird pockets of downtime where you still have to be open in case you are needed. Because of this, I downloaded Balatro on my iphone and have had a blast playing it in anywhere from 10 minute to 2 hour chunks of time. What are some other great mobile games for my situation? Nothing with micro transactions and nothing with multiplayer because I have to be able to pause the game at a moment's notice. I am thinking XCOM because I am already familiar with the game, but more recommendations would be welcome.

Victor Pham

How do you strike a balance between gaining a new audience and providing for your current audience?

Kraven Morcome

Hey MinnMax, The Death Stranding 2 presentation at sxsw is coming up soon. We will hopefully get a release date and maybe a glimpse of the inevitable collectors edition. Can the panel put in their predictions of what the big item will be in the CE? For context, the first game came with a replica of the funky fetus. My bet for DS2 is a scale replica of dollman. Keep on keeping on.

Trebor Treebeard

Missed joke: Last week, Jeff said "we have no dishwasher" then proceeded to explain how he washes the dishes himself. Obviously someone should have said, "so you do have a dishwasher."

AnAttackCorgi

Howdy folks! As someone who still has imposter syndrome even after working in my industry for almost a decade, I wonder if I’ll ever shake it off. Maybe imposter syndrome is simply knowing what you don’t know? Have you had an “I’ve arrived” moment in journalism/your career? Cheers, AnAttackCorgi

Jared Piers

Hello Minnmax! How much of Mouthwashing's success is due to Anya looking like Shelley Duvall? Would you have liked the game the exact same amount if she didnt look like Shelley Duvall?

It's Boundo

Hey all! Question about the medium: It seems like most art forms have some form of "compilation" genre (mashup music, collage art, etc.) that pieces together bits of previously existing art to make something new. Does something like this exist for games? If not, what would that look like?

EnragedPlatypi

Not a missed joke, but “an overlooked joke that makes me laugh every time I think about it.” A few months back someone wrote in asking about wet vs dry desserts and during the discussion Hansen said “Let me google it, ‘best dry dessert’” and then exclaimed “THE SAHARA?!” It made me literally laugh out loud and I still think about it all the time, but no one on the call even acknowledged it! Mostly I just wanted to bring this travesty to light. But I guess I’ll also ask a question while I’m here. Do you guys have recommendations for where my wife and I should move? We both work remote and are trying to leave Florida. Thanks!

Joe Dean

Hey Cohorts, You're in the process of recording the podcast, you've gotten through the first half and then it happens. Ben asks you "Do you know how this thing operates?" What goes through your head at that moment? What prompts you to be straight with it or give a little stinker response? For Ben, is there any logic to who you choose to ask?

b_wood

My son likes for me to sing “Old McDonald” to him. I do it a little differently by making the animal noises real fast, not saying “Here a … There a …”, and quickly transitioning to “Old McDonald had a farm”. So it's: “With a moo moo here and a moo moo there. Moo moo, Moo moo, Moo moo, Moo moo Old McDonald had a farm”. I think I have a certified hit here. To test it, can one (or all) of you sing it for me? Also, please pick an animal other than cow, chicken, pig, or sheep. I am running out of farm animals and could use some suggestions.

Kendra

This one is for the fashion queens, Sarah and Kelsey (but the fellas can chime in, too): we know y'all love Infinity Nikki because it's perfect, but do you have any favorite fashion moments in a non-fashion game?

CANAS1AN

Hey Hunters, Do you ever feel bad for the Monster Hunter beasts when they are limping away or making sad noises? Have you ever killed a monster as it was sleeping, getting in one last joy before the end? Do you prefer to capture or slay monsters? Can't wait for Wilds this week!

lumberjack

How many times is it acceptable to reheat a cup of coffee in the microwave? Is it 1? Is it 5? 10?! My fiancé and I were debating this last week and I’m curious to know if there are any no microwave purists or 5-times-radiated hot drink fiends.

Patrick G

Hey all! What’s a game you relate to a certain time/or event in your life. For example when I had Covid all I played was cult of the lamb, and now those two things are tied together

Chree McGee

Hey MinnMaxers, Think about what you would choose as the greatest book of all time. Now think about what you would consider to be the greatest movie of all time. How does your pick for the greatest video game of all time compare? If, in your opinion, video games are lagging behind, could they ever “make up the gap”- in other words, could a developer ever create a game that would stand toe-to-toe with the titans of other storytelling art forms?

Nathan Ryer

Hi MinnMax! What’s your favorite new vinyl you have picked up recently? I was able to pick some great original 80s albums at a local show this weekend like Men at Work Business as Usual, Missing Persons Spring Session M, and Madonna Like a Virgin.

Tom Rickard

Hey Minnmax! On last week’s Bonus Pod, Leo and Haley mentioned Avowed should have been a deepest dive but no one on the crew thought it would warrant that much of a discussion before release. It got me thinking, are there any past missed games you feel should’ve received a Deepest Dive? Or any big mistakes on past Deepest Dives? Justice for the Silent Hill 2 Deepest Dive over Echoes of Wisdom in the nicest way possible!

David Dubs

Hey Gang! There has been a good amount of criticism on Avowed not having some traditional RPG mechanics like romancing options and stealing mechanics. For me, it's been refreshing not having those in the game! What RPG features are actually important for you to enjoy your experience? Avowed’s great combat, class system and exploration is enough for me to really be loving it.

Aging_Poorly

The less than stellar reviews of Monster Hunter complain that the game is too welcoming to newcomers, and has lost what makes the series special. What are some game series that have succeeded in making the transition, making games approachable, but not losing what made them special in the first place? And what do you think are the magic ingredients in making this transition?

Tokyo Game Life

I went to Donkey Kong Country in Universal Studios Japan and had the DK Wild Hot Dog, which was shockingly good. What’s the best video game related food you’ve eaten?

Nick O'Malley

Howdy! As a designer I often break down visuals subconsciously and often struggle to simply enjoy a lot of visual media at surface value because I’m constantly picking it apart. As game critics, how do y’all just play a game and have fun outside of your work games? Not analyzing the game loop or progression, but just going along for a mindless ride.

Olie

Since you’re talking about roottrees and deduction, back in the day I think most people had a look at those ‘live webcams from round the world’ sites where they would look out over shibuya crossing and various other famous and random places - what was the most interest thing you’ve ever seen happen on one?

Parker Aden

If you could make any monster from the Monster Hunter franchise your pet, which would it be and why?

Jesse Manfra

Considering the state of the industry; with many devs jumping ship from larger companies both by choice and by force, have you ever considered the parallels with gaming journalism? The economies of scale are different but the patterns are eerily similar. That in mind, have you ever thought how an in-depth PsychOdyssey style documentary about MinnMax could be a boon for the world!? Y'all, and so many others, found a path out from the Viacoms and Gamestops of the world to fully owning and creating your own thing. Would this be cool? Do we want this? Would this ultimately just become the movie Boyhood except it stars Ben Hanson? I don't know. You tell me. But what I do know is I'm very happy to still have Michael Huber shouting positive expletives about videogames into my ears and boy howdy that means something in 2025 dammit.

Travis in Fargo

Do you have a favorite graphic novel? I just started reading The Last Ronin because it came highly recommended.

Michael Archer

Do you all have any gaming tattoos? If so, aside from the IP that you love, what do they mean to you now?

Travis in Fargo

Is there any color of food you’ve never tried?

Vilis

I almost feel like, knowing how drastically different Civ games are at the end of their life cycle than the beginning, rating it on its initial release is almost a footnote for the historical record of where it started than a comprehensive notion of the game going forward. I'm hearing people talk about it now and I'm like "Okay, well I didn't buy Civ 6 when it launched either because Civ 5 was way better by the end." Same happened with Destiny 2 actually. Are the games being entirely propped up by early adopters or do the businesses factor in the long tail on the games where they'll pick up more and more buy-in as years go along?

Zane Dukes

Why is everyone in Marvel Rivals so damn hot? Is it the hottest video game roster ever?

tuxpeng

What piece of media's name do you think you've said the most during your life?

Poofydoo

Do you ever miss playing games you love? I recently was able to finish Xenoblade 2 and it’s DLC. Though I have a backlog, I love Xenoblade 3 so much I decided to play it again before Chronocles X comes out. I have to say, it’s so nice playing an awesome game that is enjoyable every second and not chase a new game hoping it will be good. Have you forgotten this feeling?

Sincerly, Eric

Hello everyone! I have realized recently that when speaking with friends about new games I've played or come across or giving a review. My short hand or easiest way to explain it is by saying it's like This game meets That game. When this came up recently by trying to explain a game, I realized: Could this be a MinnMax game? I'll write a few down with the answers for Ben's eyes only and then you all can decide if it's worth doing or fun. (Or if you have your own you'd like to share to see if the other CoHorts can guess as well.. whatever works.) First one. It's like Mario meets Zelda. Answer: Metroid. (That's an easy one) It's like Teardown meets Fortnite Answer: Finals (Only Leo is allowed to tell me I'm wrong about this) Its like Resident Evil meets Turok Answer: Dino Crisis It's like Animal Crossing meets Hades Answer: Cult of Lamb It's like Night in the Woods meets Life is Strange Answer: Lost Record (The actual review that prompted all of this) Devil May Cry meets Godzilla Destory All Monsters Melee Answer: Final Fantasy 16 Yakuza meets Dragon Quest Answer: Like a Dragon (This feels like a trick question) Mario Kart meets Donkey Kong 64 Answer: Diddy Kong Racing Okay, that's all I can think of right now. More then likely there are better examples, but hope you all enjoy it and maybe it may make the show better!

Clayton Dexter

What would you consider “gaming canon”? Not the greatest game necessarily but the most “important” for someone in the industry to play.

Nawt Poncho

When I was a very young child, my parents and I all played Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker on the same GameCube. One time I wanted to start playing and all the save slots were taken up by both my dad's save and my mom's new game plus save. Being the brilliant child that I was, I deleted every save file so that I could start over again... and I live in shame about it to this day. I don't know what I was thinking! Have you ever deleted someone's save file? Either on accident or on purpose? How many Hail Mary's should I do?

Fancygraham

Between these all stars of video game advertisements, which do you prefer: Super Smash Brothers 64, Paper Mario 64, OR Dead Space 2?

Nathan Ryer

If androids dream of electric sheep, what do video game characters dream of? Do they all just dream of Wooloo?

Cody A

Hey, my question is about the editing process for minnmax Patreon content. The full version of the Ryan Payton interview had really great stories that weren't in the public version. Are these stories specifically to reward paid subscribers? Or is it just simply getting it down to a cleaner/shorter version?

Derrie

Hey gang. It appears the Wonder Woman game has been cancelled, which puts us even further from seeing any reimplementing of the Nemesis System last seen is 2017 with Shadow of War. While we're dwelling on nice things we can't have, where would you like to see the Nemsis System utilised? Any particular IPs or types of game where you think this mechanic could flourish?

Kevin Kuper

How many notes do you all read in your games? In games like the last of us I feel obligated to read almost everything as they are relevant to the story but an early mission in Avowed puts you in a room with 10ish notes about the lore and I just can't do it. What's the crews approach?

OhMyBlob

Have you ever seen how differently films and games compare when it comes to metacritic scores? The disparity is completely mad and it’s hilarious. For example, with a score of 86, Kirby’s Epic Yarn is apparently more of a cultural touchstone than The Matrix with a score of 73. So, I have a game for you - you simply need to guess which one out of these pairs got the higher metacritic score… Jurassic Park vs Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Godfather Part II vs Super Mario Sunshine Interstellar vs Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game Answers Jurassic Park - 68 Turok: Dinosaur Hunter - 85 Godfather Part II- 90 Super Mario Sunshine - 92 Interstellar - 74 Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game - 69

Alex Christiansen

Inspired by a conversation some of us had in the discord. You're a child, traveling in a car or train and looking out the window: What game are you making up to pass the time as you watch the scenery go by? Are you imagining platforming over obstacles? Is there a raindrop-race going on? What are the rules and characters involved? (I wonder if this even happens anymore, now that even young kids have phones and tablets)

mikewearsprada

Good day, Minnimum Maximums. Did any of you set New Years Resolutions for yourself? Gaming related or otherwise? If so, how have they been holding up almost two months into the year? I made a goal for myself to set my video games budget to $0 for the calendar year in order to get through my growing backlog. So far, I've rolled credits on five games with The Plucky Squire almost completed!

Lanthian

Sparked by the recent conversation on Bonus Pod: If you HAD to get a massive back tattoo that you would reveal Yakuza-style, what would it be?

KiwiTheGoo

Hey MinnMaxers! What is your favorite gaming scene that you missed out on? Maybe arcade gaming in the 80s or early StarCraft LANs? Me, I wish I was a cool PSP kid when that thing first came out, it was a vibe for sure. Thanks!

Geebeesee

Hey Minnies, I submitted a question too late last week so I’m resubmitting it for consideration! Of the following three franchises, which will have its final game released first: - Grand Theft Auto - Mario - Call of Duty Love to hear your thoughts, Chris from Nova Scotia

Matthew Phelps

Hey MinnMax, In wake of the news that Warner Bros. is cleaning house by shutting down three studios, a thought about Monolith Productions’ Nemesis System comes to mind, still hoarded by Warner Bros. under the protection of patent law. Do any of you think that we will ever see it again (officially at least), or will it just be relegated to staying in the corporate vault at WB Games until the patent expires or is renewed? Would it even be worth it for other teams to try and implement the mechanics of the Nemesis system in some way should the patent expire some number of years from now? Has the ship sailed on games that could’ve been powered by the Nemesis system?

Felix davin

Hey handsome panel. How often do you sing in your daily life ? Singing brings so much yumness and delightful energy. Can singing games be the next hot thing, please SinngMax. Cheers from Paris.

Michael Berry

What do you think Shigeru Miyamoto's favorite part from the Mario movie, the bizarre live-action one from 1993, would be?

Christian Jimenez

Hello, After last week's ice plunge, do you all consider yourselves 'adrenaline' junkies (I am)? What other extreme things have you done or wish to do? Skydive, Scuba, Bungee Jump, etc. Thanks!

Tess

Hey MinnMax! I just finished watching last year's NieR: Automata anime adaptation, and it was really good! I'm surprised I heard absolutely no buzz about it from games media. Did any of y'all watch it and have any thoughts? Or any insight as to why it was a bit ignored over other adaptations?

ManifestEcho

Is there a song where you prefer the alternate version to the original? I really love the acoustic version of My Love by Florence + the Machine and how it's a completely different vibe than the regular version.

Elizabeth Fort

What happens with nemesis system with the recent closure?

Elizabeth Fort

I just got an analogue pocket and I am trying to figure what are the top tier gameboy games to play I am obsessed with Metroid fusion right

FelixA

Hey all! I played of Infinite Wealth on the Steam Deck and cannot wait for the next one when I get the chance. I really hope RGG keeps this going cause these games honestly are such great portable games. Having said this, I found my old PSP which still works and MH2 was still on it. The claw really was something else. What was your go to portable game for your commute?

Matty Gaffney

Hiya! With the unfortunate shutdown of Monolith, I've been thinking about the nemesis system and, by extension, other novel gameplay mechanics and systems that I'd love to see revived with new and creative takes. For example, I've been playing the Trails series and loving the character build system...only to have it click 5 games in that it is basically just a fresh take on materia from FFVII. Are there any systems or mechanics y'all would like to see revived in a new game (or that you have seen implemented successfully recently)? Love the vibes you create in this space -- keep it up!

Do you have a series you love but started the “wrong way”? Two for me are the Xenoblade Chronicles series (which I stated with Xenoblade 3) and the Yakuza/ Like a dragon series I started with Ishin (thanks to the deepest dive) then went on to Gaiden. Now they’re two of my favorite series.

With The Roottrees Are Dead swinging onto store shelves, I wanna know about y'all's sleuthing careers. Did you ever manage to hunt down an apocryphal game, movie, song, person, based entirely on vague memories and partial information? (for me it is finding the 1982 anime film Little Nemo Goes to Slumberland after being haunted by it for years)

Why are video games always trying to get us to play in the sewers? I've never been in a sewer or wanted to be in a sewer in real life, and I never want to be in the virtual sewers that developers spend money and labor lovingly rendering every year. Yet most of my favorite games from Mario to FF7 to Metal Gear to multiple Resident Evils require players to live out their power fantasies surrounded by simulated human waste. What gives?

Do you think we'll ever see Shigeru Miyamoto direct a game again? I know he's largely moved on to lead the multi-media push at Nintendo, but I would hate for Super Mario Run to be his last title...

Hey, first time writing in but I love the content. I'll keep it simple: If you could be a master in any hobby or skill besides your normal skills what would it be? I enjoy writing and drawing and of course video games, but after successfully remodeling two bedrooms in the past couple weeks instead of a traditional vacation, I wish I was a master builder in my free time so I could solve so many issues I have with living in a traditional suburb "box" house. I look forward to hearing your incites. Thanks, Dan

What game delay has stung the most? It wasn’t long but the one month delay of Elden Ring was a bummer because the original release date was a day after my birthday

Hey Minnmax, the question around greatest games of all time on last weeks pod, and the New Show+ list episode with Alannah reminded me of when AnimeNewsNetwork columnist Mike Toole wrote a “The OTHER Top 100 Anime Movies of All Time” list out of frustration at “best anime movies” lists that were all filled with the usual suspects, (Studio Ghibli, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, etc.) The premise was to ban all of those omnipresent entries and create a more unique list of anime films worth checking out that don’t get the love they deserve, and I’ve always wanted to see something similar done with games. With that in mind, what is the best game you’ve NEVER seen on a “greatest games of all time” list? For easy reference, this Wikipedia page of common “greatest games” list entries: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_considered_the_best

Hey y'all! Over the years, Fortnite has become a big mishmash of various franchises throughout different forms of media. Are there any properties that you think will NEVER be in Fortnite? Nintendo not included because that'd be too easy. Also, bonus question, were you aware that you (seemingly) accidentally followed me back on Tiktok? (@cant_thinkof_names)

Hello MinnMax! Even as a man in my 30s, I still get excited about smash bros character reveals. Something about the mix of Nintendo nostalgia and the current game market across different publishers made it feel like a celebration, even if it was really more of a cold calculation to sell more fire emblem games. It seemed like even people who didn't actually play smash had a good time around the mystery and fun of the next additions to the roster. If you could make a single wish to Saint Sakurai for a guest character in the next smash, who would it be?

PoorAndCurly

Hey Minnmax, can you guess how many times London has been remade in a Ubisoft game? Which is your favorite? Answer: 3 (Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Watch Dogs Legion and technically Lunden in Assassin's Creed Valhalla.)

If you were in middle school or high school *today* what game do you think young you would have been playing? What would they have been obsessed with?

humblebees

This is the first time I am gonna play a new Monster Hunter since 3 (or Tri I guess) that I will play a weapon I used already (switch axe). Usually I like using it as an opportunity to learn something new but for whatever reason I just don’t wanna learn this time and just wanna play. Do you generally prefer a game that makes you learn a new playstyle or mechanic or just the usual “video game controls” or maybe it depends?

PhillyYeetSteak

What are your thoughts on game demos? I appreciate that they exist but i rarely finish them, even if i am liking it.

Hey gang! The Oscars are this weekend! To celebrate, what would go in your Letterboxd favorite four? For me it’s: Everything Everywhere All at Once, Back to the Future, Ladybird, and Booksmart!

mantaguy

Hey, MinnMax! What's your favorite game of all time that released the same day as your birthday? Mine will potentially always be Bayonetta 3.

Hi, everyone. Does Ben just keep pushing the "Load more comments" button over and over and over to go through all these Patreon questions or does Patreon have a much easier way to view comments as the person running the Patreon account?

Greetings Minnius Maximus, I’m a huge Blank Check podcast fan. Currently they’re working their way through the first half of Spielberg’s career. That contains Jaws, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, ET, and many more. Being such salient and popular films got me thinking, if you were a guest on Blank Check what movie would you be the best guest for? For me it would be the Lord of the Rings trilogy. All the best, JiggyDigs

Hey MinnMax, I recently bought a copy of the original Jetmoto for PS1 from my local game store (shoutout Dawnstar Arcade). It was interesting playing it because, in modern racing games, my expectation is that on normal difficulty I should be able to beat the PCs by a landslide. In Jetmoto however, trying my very best, I came in 5th place. Are there games you’ve played recently that have surprised your expectations for a specific genre or difficulty?

Michael Griffin

Not a question, but I wanted to shout-out my local game store Thrillhouse Games here in Tulsa OK. They are currently dealing with some hard times after a pipe burst in their shop during the recent freeze we had. They have a Go Fund Me setup to help keep their employees paid while they are not able to be open. Just wanted to get the word out to try and help where I can! Thanks! https://www.gofundme.com/f/thrillhouse-employees-need-your-support

Am I the only one that actually cares about the distinction between roguelike and Roguelite?.. Like care in a sense, that I would much rather play roguelites because of the permanent progression. Minnmax needs to make the right decision and go back on discriminatingly calling them all rogues. You are still my favorite podcast though! - Andreas from Denmark.

Last week on bonus pod the topic was about choices in games, and I related a lot to Haley talking about how she needs to be a 'good egg'. I always want to play games with any type of narrative choice as authentically as I can and just live with the consequences, but I sometimes get a lot of anxiety about where my choice will lead me! More than once I've looked up the long-term results of important choices and pick the one I like the trajectory of most, even if it wasn't the one I was going to pick initially. It also risks spoiling things that happen later on. I don't want to keep playing games this way, but sometimes I can't help myself. Do any of you ever feel anxious about making a "less than optimal" choice in a game? How do you deal with it?

tama5

Hey all, are there games or franchises where you self-impose certain rules to either increase your immersion, enjoyment or create an “authentic” experience for yourself? For example, in BotW and TotK, I turned the HUD off, abstained from fast-travel and avoided the map screen in order to navigate the world more naturally. In Animal Crossing, never time traveling. In Fire Emblem, playing with perma death and not restarting chapters whenever a unit died. Thanks!

If each of your fingers on one hand could dispense an unlimited amount of different liquids of your choicr (edible or non edible), what liquids would they be? (Each finger can dispense it's own distinct liquid so up to 5)

Hey MinnMax! So normally when my wife and I see each other for the first time in a while, we just look at each other like we can’t stand one another, then we’ll just start talking like normal. If someone that doesn’t know us saw they would think we just hate each other. Do any of you have things like this between you and your partner? Is it just us?

CANT BLINK

Nintendo controllers always have asymmetric button layouts, playstations are always symmetric. Has there ever been any reasoning given for either? Which do you prefer?

Hey MinnMaxers near & far! Just a quick one from me today, with Nintendo hype trending due to slow trickle of anticipation of the 'Switch Successor', including dates and locations posted for global 'Experience' show tour (including Melb AU! - Yay! I feel seen 😅), but also closer is the imminent release of "Alarmo" next month in retail, but still with no specified date listed, that I saw. Just wanted to check if you had heard anything more specifically about when in March we might expect it? (perhaps due to ur stature & insider knowledge) Also I assume MinnMax will be going all out to cover the release of the New Switch at one of these shows, with tonnes of extra content? - would totally (upgrade lol) and Eat. That. Up. Thanks and keep up great work! (& “EA-style shoutout” to new Pew Pew Bang podcast)

Hey everyone! I got done with work the other day and was thinking about it. I specifically listen to you guys in the morning when I have some time at work. So when I leave work I’ll turn something else on and continue you guys where I left off when I return. It’s something that I enjoy listening to while getting my day ready around work. What do you guys like to listen to, when? Thanks for being a pleasant part of my days and have a good day everyone.

Joshua H.

Jeff! Have you gotten to the highest ante in Balatro? I’ve been playing Baldurs Gate for approaching 300 hours ( I think I’m at the last 30-40 hours of my campaign) now and Balatro has become my palate cleanser and it is just the best! Sarah! You’ve been playing any more BG3 yourself these days? Thanks everyone and hope all is well!

Hey Minnmax, I was listening this week's IGN's Nintendo Voice Chat episode about their Okami preview when Rebekah Valentine made an interesting point ( 20:33). Okami is a game not about the "main character" Amaterasu, but about Issun, the insect who rides on Amaterasu. What other games have a similar narrative/ relationship as these two characters? Does this make for a more compelling story?

Tyler Carver

How do y'all feel about secret, or "true endings" in games? I just put 60 hours of my life into persona 4 Golden and found out I'm not going to get the "true ending or Golden ending" because I didn't do a specific thing with a specific character, and because I didn't realize this I did not save scum to redeem myself because I had no clue it was even a thing. Now I feel kind of cheated out of all my hard work. What are your thoughts on this kind of approach to game design? Should there be hidden endings? I say NAY!

MarcusAuralius

Question for Kelsey: What are the best retro games to import for the PS1, Saturn or N64? Is it worth buying an JP version of Panzer Dragoon Saga and try to muddle through?

Michael Lane

If you could utilize any game mechanic in real life, what would you choose? Like, say, perhaps easy inventory management to make your spring cleaning a breeze, or the ability to eat a roasted chicken in order to cure any ailment.

Is there a time period in world history you would want to see explored more in videogames? After listening to this seasons Blowback I would love to see more games set before the Vietnam war from the Cambodian perspective

Are game reviewers getting to old? I myself am 28 so not so young but I feel as though most reviewers are older and compare everything to their gaming past. I think we just need some new faces around myself.

Hey all! If we shrunk you allll down Honey I Shrunk the Kids style, what console would be best to live in? Bear in mind it’s a random console in the world too - so you’ll have to take the console & it’s likely environment into account!
