Desert island cereal, only can take one, that’s all you will eat until you leave (what could become) diabetes island

Kyle, I am yet again asking if you have finally found the time to watch The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Where would you rank it in your personal ranking of Ghibli films?

Fachasaurus

Have you ever noticed or experienced something in a video game that you then saw in real life later with a whole new level of appreciation for it? Years ago, I remember when playing Drive Club I noticed how incredible the dynamic rain physics were in the game - actually floored at the time. Before that game, I would drive around in the rain and not think anything of it whatsoever - but now - I am in absolute awe at how individual raindrops falls on to the windshield or pools up and slides around the hood or brilliantly swishes away with each swing of the wiper blades. Something so mundane but I would never have thought twice about it without being enamored by the physics they implemented in that game.

SlyCut

Hello all, Who is your favorite villain in all of media?

WeGoGiant

When you start up a new game for the first time do you just want to get going as quickly as possible or do you want to check out the options menu? I always find that even if I don't want to change anything I at least want to know what I could change if I find something off about the experience so I'm team "Options first"

Shakenbake67

Just recently had a child and have been lucky enough to get paternity leave. For the parents in the group, what was your paternity leave game or games? I have played thru A plague tale(excellent game) and feel fortunate to have Blue Prince come out.

Stevelution

You are allowed to clone one cohort. They still have full agency just like the original. Who are you cloning and why?

Memory Card

Everyone, pay a compliment to a game that you didn't love.

Neal McMahon

With Oblivion remake on the horizon it got me thinking about old games and their save systems. Bethesda games have always had a really good system with quick saves and the ability to save at any point. Hopefully the remake will remain the same, but my question is: Have you ever quit a game because of its poor save system?

Cath

Everyone give each other compliment about something you do good at work

If you were given a deal of ageless immortality, but you had to be sent back in time and survive World War 1, would you take it?

Poofydoo

Does the MinnMax crew really miss Miis? Many seem excited about Tomodachi Life and how it brings back Miis. Also it seems to be a popular opinion that Switch Sports messed up by not using regular Miis. Are Miis that amazing or is it really just nostalgia?

tothemax

There are so many games that fall under the category of industry classics/"required reading" games. When playing retro games, how do you decide what to play? What takes priority?

Jacob Mazanowski

What game or franchise taught you the most about how to play games?

Zeth Hillman-Johnson

I'm hoping to do a cross-America train trip later this year, and it's gonna take a WHILE. What's the longest train trip you've ever been on?

David Campbell

First of all, congrats to Ben for using "champing at the bit" properly last week, as opposed to "chomping" as it's frequently said. What misused idiom or figure of speech drives you up the wall? Is there one that you love? I had a boss that always said "it's a doggy-dog world" and I thought that was such a funny version of the phrase; it makes the world sound much cuter :)

Tess

How does everyone feel about those soft sugar cookies with frosting that everyone pretends are disgusting but we all know are really good?

Mike Lynch

What are the Top 3 rules for being polite? Do you have a hyper-specific rule?

Salar

Do any of you ever find yourself feeling guilty for playing games? And your brain keeps telling you to do something else, some more “productive”? While at the same time I feel like games also don’t bring the same joy as they used to. And now talking, listening to people talk about games or even counting down days to the next big game release is more exciting than playing them. What would you guys recommend doing to change that mindset especially since gaming is my only hobby and one thing that brings me joy? Also please talk about the BDS movement to boycott Microsoft and Xbox.

Josh Johnson

If video games could be "covered" similar to cover songs, what would be your dream cover? Specifically, which studio would cover which game, and why?

Miles Johnson

I’m usually an audio listener rather than a video watcher, but watched the first time a couple weeks ago—everyone looks so different—Leo is bald! Janet has a sweet Lakers dad hat! Ben is kinda hot?—than what I imagined in my head! Kinda like if you read a book and then go see the movie years later. Q: When was the last time you met/encountered something (either in a game or irl) that kind of broke your brain in half; not because it was surprising, but because your perception of it before was so different than the reality?

Mrjaco12

Missed joke opportunity (for Nintendo?): Rename Peach Beach to Princess Beach.

Hi, asking this question on my 30th birthday: what is a gaming moment that made you grow/make you want to grow?

Travis in Fargo

Do you have any experience with time capsules?

Travis in Fargo

Why do equivalent scores on a 5-point scale and a 10-point scale feel dissimilar sometimes? A 3/5 and a 6/10 feel different to me (6/10 seems like a lower score). Bonus question! What’s your favorite kind of review scale, if any. I’ll take my answer off the air 🙏

Nate Voris

Have you ever had a moment of reflection while playing a game where you thought "is it f-ed up that I'm having fun doing this?" I remember loving the Euphoria system in Star Wars Force Unleashed and would cruelly dangle stormtroopers and watch them desperately grab for railings or anything to save themselves from being thrown over the edge into the abyss. Am i a psycho? Fun times!

Steve Bellegarde

What is your favorite little touch that you really appreciate when devs include. One of mine is when you pick up a collectible and the character will say a little comment about it.

Robinsong

The BDS movement has called for a boycott of Microsoft, including its gaming related products including Xbox Game pass https://bdsmovement.net/microsoft What are your thoughts on this? Do you plan to alter your coverage in response to this?

Travis in Fargo

Where do you stand on the “being polite to AI” issue? My kids always say “please” and “thank you” to our google home speaker, and on the one hand, it’s a good habit to speak nicely, but on the other hand, it feels unnecessary, and on another hand, one day AI will rule over us all, so on the final hand, maybe it’s smart to stay in its good graces.

CptCobblePot

I love getting gifts, but when is it to much? We recently celebrated Easter with my in-laws. We just moved 5 days ago so boxes are everywhere still. Some furniture is unassembled and my gaming consoles aren’t even plugged in. My 3 kids each got 4 Easter baskets stuffed with toys, games, cloths, and candy from everyone. Would you also feel guilty about he frustrated?

Rick

Hello! In honor of Oblivion remake, what are the top games you would actually want to see a remake for? I desperately want to see what Dino Crisis in the new engine would play like.

Chandler

Hello men. I'm in the mood to laugh. What movie should I watch?

Travis in Fargo

If you started working on it TODAY, how long do you think it would take you to earn an Academy Award?

CptCobblePot

What studio revival would you want for the Switch 2? Pandemic games could make a comeback with a new mature IP like The Saboteur or Monolith could make a Zelda nemesis system focused game.

My partner and I have a two person book club and it forces me to read book I otherwise would not have read if I had not met her. In what ways do your partners make you better or force you out of your comfort zone?

Hey MinnMax, What is the more defining feature of Clifford the Big Red Dog? Is it the fact he is giant or the fact he is red? I would argue red. If I see a red dog of any size I'm thinking about Clifford, but a giant dog that isn't red could be anyone.

Victor Pham

What's the worst example of a dialogue choice not matching what the voices character actually says?

David Dubs

Hey Gang - Am I nuts or have modern pinball machines become way too complicated!? I went to my local pinball arcade with a ton of machines that I just couldn’t follow. There’s now constant sound effects on every hit, an entire tv at the top with important details, an overflow of lights, and constant multi-balls that I have no idea how I’m triggering. Am I just getting old and can’t keep up with it all?

Adam Cohen

Hello CLCs. What particular video game enemy do you think has caused the most player deaths? Recently I saw a meme saying that the first Goomba in 1-1 of Super Mario Brothers might have the most. Do you agree? Is there another? I would think it would have to be one from a game that has been widely played and relayed, and probably early in a game as to be encountered by the most players.

Do you: a) wet your toothbrush then put toothpaste on, b) put toothpaste on your toothbrush then wet it, or c) just put toothpaste on and don’t wet it?

Hi MinnMaximos! I think peanut butter is a perfect food and might be the only one I can think of. It works when savory and sweet. What is a perfect food in your opinion?

Juniper Cain

Hey gang! Last week on the podcast, Ben and Kyle valiantly defended audiences shouting 'Chicken Jockey!' at the Minecraft movie. If you could replicate this theatrical experience with any other film moment, or even gaming moment, as in the audience would all shout the quote from the media immediately after it's said and lose their minds, what would it be?

Kevin Kuper

Hello CLCs! Oblivion Remaster was just shadow dropped and I have been really impressed with gamepass and it's output over the last few months. I haven't bought a single game because everything I've been playing is on gamepass. Indiana Jones, South of Midnight, Blue Prince and upcoming games like Doom and Expedition 33. Do we feel like the domino's are finally starting to fall for Microsoft and what will xbox/gamepass look on the next generation?

Onlinesquid

Typing this as I'm wiping tears from my face watching the oblivion remastered reveal. When is the last time you realized a game meant so much more to you than you thought at first?

BEEFCAKE

My four year old daughter has been playing princess peach showtime and she loves it. And it's got me thinking, where are all the kids games These days? Why is it predominantly nintendo serving that market?

Graham Jones

Hey CLCs, Star wars outlaws gave us the right thumb stick press and Hades gave us the right bumper to interact which both feel so good! I feel like button control layouts are an underrated part of making gameplay more fun and engaging. What are some of your favorite non traditional button control layouts and how do you feel they changed the game experience for you?

Recently, I’ve been slowly working my through the Metal Gear Solid master collection. Do y’all have a series of games you finally played and loved long after they had been released?

Bloodborne 10 year anniversary has come and gone. Now FromeSoft has announced/released two multiplayer games with mixed reactions from Fans. My question. Is it possible for FromeSoft to release a smaller single-player focused game (15-20 hours) or are they stuck with super large open world games like Elden Ring?

Craig Gilmore

Not really a question but just wanted to say that in reference to man-of-the-hour Alex Garland recently, Jacob mentioned on a recent podcast that he wrote DmC: Devil May Cry. Just wanted to ask if Jacob saw the recent GQ filmography interview with Garland and if he laughed at all at the moment where the interviewer asks him about DmC and he responds "Yeah, nah, I did fuck all on that!"

umryan

Hi all, Blue Prince has been out for a couple weeks now and I've been playing it practically daily. As a side effect, the game has been influencing my dreams nightly. This phenomenon was briefly touched on during the Minn Max bonus pod (the companion pod to the minnmax show!). What are some instances where games have influenced, or infected, your sleepy time dreams?

Max B-Z

Let’s talk shop! What’s a hard-learned podcasting or recording trick or tool that blew your mind when you first learned but now seems fundamental and necessary? OBC weirdness? Lav Mic logistics? Why are y’all so darned good??

Let’s get the Proud Dad’s to Sound off! Can you share a time your kid has said or done something that has made you tear up? As a Dad of a 2 year old I had recently made him a Birthday Cake in the shape of Bluey and just having him stare at it in awe before saying, Wow! Was all I needed to break me. Thanks for everything!

Nathan Ryer

Where is my sweet sweet Pew Pew Bang merch? When do the preorders go up?

Happy spring MinnMax! It's finally getting warm in the northern US, and I'm wondering if y'all are looking forward to doing anything touching-grass-adjacent in the nicer weather. I'll be hiking the dunes and catching up on the New Show Plus backlog.

Felix davin

Hello Minnmax. Do you have an idea of naming the concept of how Video Games makes the past feels more distant than other media ? A 2005 movie doesn't feel that old. A game does.

Mike Fab

Hi CLCs. If you had known how good Balatro would be before it was released, how much would you have been willing to pay for it? I would have paid the modern AAA game price, which is still $70, I think?

bizkiut (Nick S.)

Ok you CLCs, bouncing off of the bonus pod for this week, what's your favorite Easter egg in a game? One of mine is from terraria where every once in awhile, instead of a quack, a duck will make the sound of a person saying quack. Video for reference: https://youtu.be/KQzv_kBbiHw?si=TQpYXl_j8lISiFRj

Hey all! In the Oblivion reveal they mentioned the Bethesda engine being the brain and Unreal 5 being the body. I thought that was interesting as usually a studio seems to refer to only one that they use. Is this mixing of engines rare? If one engine is known for limitations (no offense Bethesda) that another engine doesn’t have, I’d think this would be a more commonly used solution.

Ajay Nath

Here is a game for the cohorts. Kelsey wrote a book about Animal Crossing. Have each cohort 1) take a piece of paper, write the names of all other cohorts 2) guess the game or game series that each other cohort would write about and write it down next to their name 3) have each cohort reveal which game or series they would write about The winner is the one that gets the most correct!

Hey MinnMax, What's your favourite time of day? As in, precise minute of the day? Which minute consistently brings the most joy?

DarthBane79

Hello Ben Benihana! Kinda Funny is doing a "Deepest Dive" on Oblivion. Are you going to let Greg Miller get away with this blatant copyright infringement? Are you going to RELEASE THE HAILEY on them? Love you guys!!

Brandon H

As someone who never bought a Switch (Switch 1?) I am excited to buy the Switch 2 and play some of the games that I missed! In regards to Zelda... would you recommend playing both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom? If no, which one should I play?

Grizzled Gaming

Hey, gang! Ben, tell JeffM Grizzled Gaming says "Hello". He'll know what it means. What’s one of your favorite or most memorable community questions you’ve answered over the years?

Thom Blackburn

Let's get black mirror-y. What is the unhealthiest connection you've had to a character in a game? I made my entire 8th grade football team with my judgement of stats (even made myself 3rd string and terrible at football!)

mantaguy

I'm planning on pre-ordering my Switch 2 in person when those open this Thursday in order to beat the bots online. If anyone has ever pre-ordered a console in person before, how early should you show up to the store before it opens so that you beat the early adopter stampede?

kajmo

Hey gang, wondering if any of the cohorts have any fun stories of taste, smell or sound triggered memories? I once classically conditioned myself to associate eating cereal with AC/DCs Black in Black album. Didn't realise this until about a year later when I randombly put that album on and could taste cereal. This came to mind watching the Oblivion Remaster announcement as even just the music threw me back to my youth. Keep up the good work!

Bloody Waffle

For the bois, what's your beard routine?

I saw someone recently released a homebrew mod for the 2011 Wii game Fortune Street that adds Kirby characters. What’s your favorite mod for a game?

Shane C

I'm uncomfortable patting Microsoft on the back after all the B.S. layoffs, studio closures, etc over the past few years. But is Game Pass quietly having an incredible comeback year? I'm pretty sure Indiana Jones was the only Game Pass game I messed around with at ALL last year, but this year I've already played through Citizen Sleeper 2, Avowed, Atomfall, and Blue Prince, and it's only April. Meanwhile the Oblivion remaster just dropped and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Doom: The Dark Ages, and The Outer Worlds 2 are right around the corner with a good amount of buzz. I was debating cancelling my Game Pass subscription, but this lineup probably has me locked in for the rest of this year. Obviously I don't think it excuses their atrocious recent track record, but I guess I'm just curious what you think an unexpectedly good year of games means for Microsoft (if anything).

Eliinspace

Would you rather have to fight a 6 foot tall goose once, or be stalked by a regular goose for the rest of your life?

Luca Alberti

Hellow crew, is Microsoft trying to pull an "EA Titanfall 2 release" with this Oblivion shadowdrop where they try to overshadow Expedition 33 only to try and buy the studio after the game doesn't sell quite as much as it could have if another massive RPG didn't causally drop 2 days before it?

Tom Brien

What makes Final Fantasy different from every other JRPG? I think of it as every American's introduction to a JRPG, but if you play a lot of them, then what defines it?

Brandon Graff

In light of the oblivion remake. My plan is the same as it always was as a kid. Exit the sewers and go west to the coast to find the glass helm in the ocean. Is there anything you guys always make sure to do in an open world game in subsequent play through?

AnAttackCorgi

Howdy ‘Horts! I haven’t watched the first episode of The Last of Us S2 yet, and haven’t played the games. I recently got spoiled about THE twist via a some random recommended Google article with said twist right in the headline. I’m pissed! But I figure it’s bound to happen sooner or later, given how long the game’s been out. What game/movie/show spoilers have you avoided for the longest and how have you managed to pull the streak off? Keep gaming on AnAttackCorgi

Bonjour, The Minecraft movie is a certified smash hit, eclipsing Detective Pikachu in the box office. Which celebrity would you choose to get transported isekai-style to the world of Pokemon to put the franchise back on top? Cheers!

What is Spaghetti? A Miserable Pile of Secrets!!

Hey MinnMax crew! I run a Nintendo Switch Club for my friend group and we recently played Europa. One of my friends commented that she absolutely loved this game— her favorite of the 20 games we've played so far— because "it demanded nothing from her in a time of her life when that was absolutely needed". Are there any games that you turn to when life is crushing down upon you and you can completely zone out and feel zen?

Ashley Malone

Which successful movie franchise has the most bad movies? Hard version of the question: exclude Star Trek from a possible answer

Tyler Carver

Hey y'all, Let's talk more about pricing! It seems like it's a Wild West out there for video game creators/publishers to make games cost whatever the hell they want without a set standard right now. Sony has The Last of Us Part 1 and 2 respectfully listed at $69.99, Mario Kart World will be $79.99, and yet out of nowhere Bethesda/Microsoft shadow drop Oblivion remaster for a, checks notes, low down price of $49.99! All that being said, what do you as a consumer take into consideration when giving these companies your hard earned dollars? Personally I tend to think of it in the amount of hours of enjoyment I'll get out of the game, if a game is 6-10 hours fat chance I'll pay $60-$70 for it. Curious to hear your thoughts. Regards,

Nick from Atlanta

Hello Cohorts, It's time for everybody's favorite soda themed game, Doctor or Doctored! As everybody knows, your job is to correctly guess whether a Dr. Pepper knock off is real or fake. Contestants win a lifetime supply of my choice of Dr Pepper knock off (if you only drink it once and then never again). Mr Country - Fake, but Fareways in Iowa carried one called Country Doctor Dr. Celeste - Real, was distributed by The Pantry across the South Doctor Whatever - Real, appears to have been distributed across the South at various stores Dr. Nut - unfortunately Real, bottled in New Orleans by the World Bottling Co. from the early 30s to late 70s) Mr. Riffic - Fake, but there Dr. Riffic used to be carried by Eckerd stores before they became Rite Aid Skipper - Real, an old Safeway drink which changed to Dr. Skipper it was discontinued The Skipper - Real, formerly carried by Homeland, which was Safeway's Oklahoma and Northern TX division Mr. Sipp - Real, formerly from "Smart & Final" stores in AZ, CA, FL, NV, and Mexico Mr. Bipp - Fake, I took Mr. Pibb and flipped the letters in Pibb upside down And, in case a tie-breaker is needed, the first person to answer the following correctly: How many sodas called "Dr. Right" did I find? Three. One from Shop'n'Save in northern West Virginia (Mountain Mommaaaa, take me home, etc) and southern Pennslyvania, and two from Supervalu, a defunct brand that produced one under their Flavorite line and the other under their "Preferred Selection" line. Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Hello M&Ms On a blockbuster trip, my mom rented a N64 South Park game for me. While I enjoyed it my mom did not enjoy them swearing all the time. We went back and the clerk explained the rating system to my mom. She became more aware of my gaming and I one time had to convince my mom the tony hawk game was saying “cyco visions” and not “psycho bitches”. I didn’t own a M rated game til I was 17. How aware were your parents of what you played?

When I play chess with my kids, I ask them if I should play on easy, medium, or hard. When you play games with people, do you ever offer a difficulty level for you to play on?

Greetings Computer Lovers Are there any super obscure game quotes that you love referencing even though no one would get the reference? Mine is from the Spongebob Movie videogame for PS2. If you sit idle in the pause menu, the characters will say random voice lines and there's one where Patrick says "If you can't say anything nice about someone, don't blow your nose in your hand". What are your's?

Blake Barber

Hi Benihana & the Chefs. Am I missing something, or is no one talking about how brilliantly South of Midnight "threads the needle" when it comes to race and the South? As someone born in Georgia, I am always annoyed to hear fake southern accents for characters usually portrayed as simple idiots. This game is such a rare occurrence of media paying homage to Southern culture/mythology while not seeming like it is making fun of Southern people. Also, having a black female lead who is awesome and the story not focusing purely on racial dynamics seems so rare in the media. I am so glad this game exists and hope it paves the way for more compelling main characters of color in video games. What do YA'LL think?

twobears

Do you have friends who don't play videogames? How do you describe your career/work to people who are completely outside of the "field"?

Max Malavenda

Balatro and Blue Prince are both examples of roguelike elements being fused onto a preexisting but maybe unlikely genre, resulting in some of the most beloved games of their respective years. What genre would you most like to see get the same rogue treatment/do you think would benefit the most from it? My first thought was restaurant games e.g. Diner Dash

Colin Luton

Hello, Minnesota Maximizers. I'm boycotting Xbox! I'm not writing this to pressure you anyone to join me, boycotting is always an individual choice and there are numerous valid reasons why someone my not be able to participate (running video game podcast for example), rather I just want to talk about it and share my experience. For those who don't know the BDS movement (Boycott, Divestment, Sanction) is the widely recognized authority on organizing collective action against corporations enabling Israel's actions against the people of Palestine. On April 4 they announced Microsoft, and Xbox specifically, as a priority target for a boycott. They are calling on people to unsubscribe from Game Pass and Office, to not buy any new games or content on the Xbox platform, and to not buy games, or content for games, published by Xbox or it's subsidiaries including Activision, Bethesda, and King. More info on the official BDS site: https://www.bdsmovement.net/news/boycott-microsofts-xbox#:~:text=By%20boycotting%20the%20Xbox%20brand,since%20viable%20gaming%20alternatives%20exist. I have been primarily an Xbox gamer since 360 and game pass ultimate subscriber for years, but no more. I still have a switch and a steam deck so it's not like I'm gaming starving myself but it's a strange feeling to be effectively cut off from future AAA releases, the game pass library, my games with gold, and my favorite multiplayer games. On the other hand this is a great excuse to make some dents in my backlog! To turn this into a question, why isn't this boycott bigger news in the games media space? It was announced on April 4th but I didn't hear about it till last week. Even if gaming news outlets don't want to take sides on a touchy issue, isn't it still significant news that a major organizing force has named a major player like Xbox as a target for major collective action? And not for nothing, but it's hard not to see Microsoft shadow dropping the oblivion remake as an attempt to bury the boycott in the news cycle just as it's starting to gain momentum. Thanks for all you do -Colin

Hey all, in their near 30 year history as a music publication, Pitchfork has only given proper reviews to two video game soundtracks. Can you guess what they are? I've written some hints to help set you on the right path, take them when needed: Hint 1: Game A's soundtrack was reviewed on release within the past ten years while Game B had a classic sunday review Hint 2: Game A was *eligible* but did not make it in a two tens list, Game B was featured in the recent "greatest games of all time" new show+ Hint 3: Both artists have performed live at Geoff Keighley events Hint 4: The majority of pitchfork readers are familiar with artist A while the majority of minnmax listeners are familiar with artist B ANSWER: Sable by Japanese Breakfast (reviewed on Sep 24, 2021) & The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time by Koji Kondo (reviewed on July 7, 2019). BONUS QUESTION: Can you guess their review scores? BONUS ANSWER: Sable: 7.5/10, OoT: 9.0/10

Hey cohorts, What's the first pop culture reference you think of that has the same name as yourselves? Anything from character to actor to a place? What's the first famous thing that shares your name

RynaGoGo

Howdy Cohorts, My question is for Jacob. As someone who is a fan of parry heavy games like Sekiro and Nine Sols, do you have any plans on playing The First Berserker Khazan? The combat is some of the best and I’m having a blast. The last boss is supposedly harder than Sword Saint and I’m almost to it. I’m pumped! Check it out if you get the chance.

With the rise of games being adapted into shows and movies, what's one that, if done right, you'd like to see get it's time to shine? In a perfect world I'd love to see Studio Ghibli do a Zelda movie. I also think Mass Effect would make for a good show!

Limp Bizquick

Where do we stand with shadow drops in 2025? Am I wrong in thinking it hurts sales??

Nick Zaremba

Hello cohorts! Not sure if you've touched base on it yet but wanted to hear what yall thought of the first two episodes of TLOU season 2. Im not a fan of the story in Part 2 myself but feel like I may enjoy the adaptation of it in the show better. it seems they are intertwining the concurrent POVs instead of doing a hard swap halfway though and front loading abby's development to a degree, which may have helped me appreciate the story more by credits of the game. Besides from your thoughts on the show are there any other properties you can think of where you enjoyed the adaptation better than the source material. (Many might say the shining by Stephen King)

I've been playing Blue Prince and loving it - but the music makes me think there is going to be a jump scare whenever I draw a new room. Do you have any games where you're on the edge of your seat expecting a scare because of the music/setting but get nothing? Or the reverse, a game that hit you with scare unexpectedly?
