What was a time a game "got you" with a little trick or gotcha moment? My favorite is an NPC in Hollow Knight that runs a bank you can store your currency in so you don't lose it if you die. If you end up storing too much, they'll just bail with your money, leaving being a cardboard facade of the bank counter. It was frustrating losing the money, but I couldn't help but laugh too knowing the devs had gotten me good. There's also a way to get the money back, so it was more funny than frustrating.

Hello MinnMax! How can The Plucky Squire help Ghost of Yōtei? I just started playing the Plucky Squire and I was pretty stoked that there was a streamlined option. Based on a recent GB discussion about THPS 3+4: do you use the analog stick or dpad in games? What about for 2D platformers? 3D platformers? Hello friends, recently while housecleaning I unearthed my PS2 slim and my small collection of PSX Games I still have, including my original FFVII. This sent me down the nostalgia rabbit hole of when I first saw FFVII at a friends house, and was so enamored by it that I almost immediately decided to jump ship from Nintendo (my only consoles as a kid) to beg my folks for a PSX. After playing the Switch 2 version of Tears of the Kingdom, I was thinking should Nintendo have waited and released the game as a Switch 2 launch game? They still could've sold the Switch 1 version as well, but more importantly the vibes of the Switch 2 launch would've repeated BTOW with Switch 1 and be way more culturally memorable, with the memes of phallic machines and stuff. The discourse around the last two hugely acclaimed 3D platformers, Astro Bot and Super Mario Odyssey, has centered around how successfully these games evoke a sense of "joy" in the player. But I say there's another "J" word that doesn't get brought up nearly as much with these games: JUMPING! Am I the only one that fears that 3d platformers are finding acclaim while deemphasizing their platforming in favor of a toybox of discrete mechanics and gimmicks? Hey CLCs, I've stated to accept recently that I'm terrible at finishing games. In particular I have a bad habit of getting right to the end of games and not finishing them. Couple of examples are MGS4 (had that 90 minute cut scene looming) and Blasphemous 2 (other bosses took so long, reached the final boss and just ran out of steam). With that in mind, what is the game you've gotten closest to finishing and not finished?

Since my son was born, I had very little time to play video games. Yesterday, I was looking some games on the 'How Long to Beat' website and noticed something: old games are way shorter than today's AAAs. For instance, both Metroid: Fusion and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow are around the 7 hours mark. I was curious and scraped and plotted the data on Zelda titles and confirmed my hypothesis that the games are getting longer as time passes. So, two unrelated questions: 1. Why is that? Do people crave for longer games? I'd guess it was the contrary, since the availability went through the roof. 2. For those of you who have children, how did your gaming habits change when they were born? I realize that the cohorts are probably not the best source for this question as everyone works with video games, but I'm curious nonetheless!

I have so many interests but being in my 40s I find I'm really lacking the time to invest in all the things I want to do, and gaming, my #1 hobby and passion, ends up eating up most of my free time. Not a question but I have to shout this out: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is a 3D platformer. You jump around, slip and slide, explore the space, get points, race the clock and collect floating letters. It's more like Mario 64 than like skateboarding, and I think the programmers at Neversoft came at it from that angle. Outside of Mario, Tony Hawks 2 is the best 3D platformer.

Astro Bot is the easily the best 3D platformer ever made. It perfectly embodies Miyamoto’s product design philosophy. It prioritizes pure function over expression, clearly built around tightly iterated gameplay ideas. But here’s my question: would it still be as highly regarded without the functionality of the DualSense?

Hi MinnMax crew, do you ever think about what your gaming time would be like if you didn’t have “keep up” with the conversation? Imagine if starting tomorrow no new games came out for the next 365 days and you could only play already released titles for the next year. And to make things interesting you could only pick 4 games. What games would you play? I’d choose one long game with lots of variety like UFO 50. I’d pick one “get good” game and choose something like Street Fighter 6 because I’ve always wanted to get good at fighting games. I’d choose one big open world with lots of replayability like Cyberpunk 2077. And I’d pick one slow, cozy game like Fields of Mistria.

Since there's not a blockbuster lineup of new gen exclusives, do you think if Nintendo had released the new Switch as "the Switch Pro" people would be more excited about it? It has an increase in power, improved functionality, and some new games that will exclusively run on this version of the Switch, but all old games are also functional. Did they have to call it the Switch 2 because the prices of the hardware and games are getting too high for it to just be thought of as an optional upgrade?

Howdy CLC’s: I know this has been asked before, but besides Ghost of Tsushima’s wind, what’s one feature a recent game has that you wished others did? For me, really wish the Death Stranding 2 blue bar when pausing a cut scene, a visual representation of how much is remaining, would be super helpful, especially in games from RGG like Yakuza.
