Although not a pro trophy hunter myself, I like going for the platinum on single player games I really like. Usually, it makes me feel like I really did "all there was to do" in the game.

Howdy! In a recent interview, Ueda talked about how he thinks the age of new mechanics is over, and that it's better to focus on refining existing mechanical ideas while focusing on tone. It made me think of Shadow of the Colossus, which didn't invent boss fights, climbing, or navigational indicators, but refined and evolved each of those things into a gestalt that still feels fresh today. Hey, I've been getting my almost 4 year old daughter into gaming. She's dabbled on N64, Gamecube, Wii, 3DS, Switch and PS5. She loves Mario Kart Double Dash and walking around in games like Kirby's Epic Yarn, Mario RPG, Animal Crossing and Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom. Are puzzles and games just not worth it? Although I find myself loving many games with puzzles like Uncharted, Zelda, and more recently Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, I am always left just googling the answers. Last week, the comments about Mario 64's camera got me thinking about how the camera is still a big friction point for most 3rd person platforming and action games ive played since ive owned a ps1. I like to say that my most hated enemy in souls games is the camera (especially in indoor spaces). What 3d platforming/action game got the camera right? My answer would be Armored core 6. Its the only AC I've played so i dont know if the older games had this approach, but I really appreciated having camera settings integrated into the mech builds.

It's themes got me thinking about my own identity and I thought "how Latino can I consider myself if I barely speak Spanish?" Most chewing gum flavors are either minty or sweet. Why aren’t there more subtle or mellow options? Something like green tea or chamomile? Ginger or coffee maybe? Hello MinnMax, So I’ve been playing a game recently (for Hanson, it was South of Midnight, but feel free to cut this if it’s too spoiler-y) and at one point the character I am controlling seems to totally misunderstand the intentions of another character. Based on the context of the story, I can tell this villain is going to end up being a misunderstood good guy, but because the main character hasn’t caught up yet, I have to beat someone up who I know to be innocent before the cutscene triggers to have the main character realise their mistake. My question is how do you square that difference between your interpretation of in-game events and your character’s interpretations. When the game requires you to do things you know are narratively futile, does that annoy you? Do you feel games should have a “I am ahead of the story on this” button?

Hey all, What's the most difficult gaming challenge you've ever overcome? I have two that come to mind. Firstly the insane platforming challenge of White Palace in Hollow Knight, which I died a ridiculous number of times. Secondly the final boss Eigong in Nine Sols which was about 8-9 hours of learning her attack patterns over 3 different phases dying again & again until I could eventually parry 90% of her attacks & come out victorious. The relief!

What’s more important to you: a video game with a strong beginning or strong ending?

Ben, In the episode last week you lamented (maybe not quite “lamented”…but close) that you have never made “your great work” as a creative. Both you and Kyle made comments on how your work is largely derivative, work that is commenting on other people’s creative output. While it is true that MinnMax (or Delayed Input) as an outlet for games media/journalism is driven by others work I found the conversation almost entirely lacking consideration of your own creative input. Isn’t everything a “remix”? Do not games reinterpret and recontextualize ideas, systems, narratives, etc. from other games or media? Isn’t only through the influence of the creators that anything qualitatively “new” is ever made? I mean, I don’t go to other video game podcasts, or YouTube feeds, or twitch channels, or patreons, I go HERE (and love Delayed Input and constantly consider making my commitment official). Is there nothing to be said for the draw that THIS particular mix has for people, for the platform YOU, BEN HANSON have led the creation and development of? For the community funding it? Everyone on the podcast was commenting “oh, I get thanked all the time for the work I do, and people tell me how much my content has improved their lives…” and no one connected the dots that, well, maybe that means something and maybe your work is more meaningful than you’d give yourself credit for. Do any creatives get to decide for themselves what their “great work” is, or does history? Or the community of the creators? Maybe MinnMax is a “great work” that you all can be proud of, maybe it’s not just “eating french fries” to borrow a Bosman phrase. Anyway, aside from all that, I was wondering: Ben, what would have to happen for you to be able to go, sit at a table in a cafe, coffee in hand, and begin to work on your dream “great work”? Is there ANYWAY this would be possible within the framework of MinnMax? I’m sure tons of people would love to help give you the bandwidth (really, material resources) to pursue that ambition!

With the last original Donkey Kong game coming out 10 years ago, what’s one classic Nintendo game series that deserves a chaotic, over-the-top revival like this, even if it risks being totally bonkers?

Controller schemes have recently become pretty standardized. X or A for jump, triggers for shooting, etc. what games do you think had a creative usage of controller schemes? As much as Katamari Damacy’s controls were frustrating, I enjoyed the idea that each of the sticks was a hand on the Katamari, for example. Ape escape also had you move the net/tool with the right analog.

Hey minnmax, have you ever had something ruined because it became too popular? I used to love the "notinteresting" subreddit where people would take photos of the most mundane objects: toasters, stop signs, you name it. Sadly these days it feels like a lot of the posts are memes to gain attention, and are not in it for the love of uninteresting content. Your answer doesn't have to be an online space: maybe a quaint restaurant jacked up their prices after it became tiktok famous, or a band's concert tickets are impossible to buy now.

Dear MinnMax, First time submitting a question so I figured I'd start with a serious one. Is Donkey Kong aware of what his name is? I’m not the most versed person in DK lore but I haven't seen any donkeys in any of the games I've played. I know there's rhinos, swordfish, spiders, alligators, and even zebras but no donkeys. I don't have the funds to buy every game and corresponding console so I figured I'd ask the experts. Are there donkeys in the Donkey Kong countries? And if not, would you tell him what they are?

Here are some of my and other faceless internet denizens’ take. Please rate them on a scale 1-10 and use the spiciness (how provocative), uniqueness, and how strongly you agree as criteria. Or do what you want. You are all adults. Kojima is an overrated artist. He is living off fans who drank his Kool-Aid years ago. Nintendo is king! They will never not make a good game, and if they ever do it doesn't matter. Whatever they do, we will take it and we will like it and we will say “Please, sir. May I have some more please.” You shouldn't be allowed to be a CEO of a video game company if you don't play video games. No exceptions. Next gen consoles (PS6 and the next Xbox) shouldn't be released until 2030. This current generation has been incredibly disappointing and is only now just starting. They should stop making Digimon games since it lost to Pokemon years ago and will never be important to the public consciousness. Square Enix should stop making Final Fantasy games since it is an outdated & tired franchise and will never reach the popularity it once had. Video game fans are way too invested in how many copies of a video game sold.
