This question is for Ben, Kyle, and JeffM, My wife and I are expecting our first child early next year. As a soon to be first time father, what should I expect as far as video game time? One hr per day? One hr per week? None forever??!!! Love the show

Sam Nelson

What single game/franchise would you pick to represent MinnMax as an outlet, and which you choose to represent your peers?

Neal McMahon

Hey MinnMax I recently have been documenting all the games I play in an Excel—in it I have the hours count, dates I start the play through, dates I complete them, my rating of each, and so on. Data is cool!! Anyway, just this year I 2025 I have played 25 games compared to last years count of only 9 and beat 100%!of them. Out of the 25 I have beaten this year, I completed 18 which is a 72% completion rating. My average completion time is 16 days, average hours 113—and these are big games like FF rebirth, Ghost of Tsushima, Fallout New Vegas and so on (humble brag). If you have to guess, how many gams have you played this year and how many have you beaten? Do you track games like I do?

Cath

Please do merch! You keep saying you will since I arrived. It’s been three year Ben! Do I have to open a store for you 😂

PoorAndCurly

Hey gang, Isn't it wild that a Guardians of the Galaxy game exists, is good, and no one talks about it? What's your pick for a "Isn't it wild this exists" game?

RynaGoGo

Hey MinnMax. What’s up with Unicorns? Do they have one corn or something?

Thom Blackburn

LEGO party and a Mary Kate and Ashley game for the PS2 are the only games I'm aware of that have tried the Mario party formula, so why aren't more devs taking a shot at genres that Nintendo has already "perfected?"

L Stockler

Hey! Considering JeffM's grading method of good games (aka, at what time he went to sleep), I was wondering... What time do you guys usually wake up and go to sleep?

Steve Bellegarde

Hey Minnmax. What do you think the most common video game objective is? Follow this NPC? Defeat all Enemies?

AJ

You died! Womp womp. Now it’s time to see what your lifetime stats page says about how you lived your life. What stats do you think would be on this page; steps taken, words written, hours sat, etc. and/or what is your highest stat? Mine would either be cocktails shaken and stirred (I’m a bartender) or video game quests completed (it has to be SO high - I’m caught up on FFXIV) Have fun MinnMaxers

AnAttackCorgi

Wassup MinnMax! What would MinnMax’s private equity firm name be? Think ‘Embracer Group’. Think ‘The Consortium’. Think ‘Improving shareholder value by finding efficiency!’ Bonus points for agreeing on which company you acquire, embrace, minnmax economy for first.

Jacob de Mailly

Hi Folks! Since LEGO games are some of the topics of this episode, what level from a video game would you love to have as a LEGO model?

Travis in Fargo

Do you, with absolute certainty, remember the last time you ate a bacon cheeseburger?

notweirder

If aliens arrived on earth, which outcome is scarier? They don't look like anything we could have predicted, or they look exactly like one person's eyewitness account from 40 years ago

LlorchDurden

Crew! #7 biggest JeffM fan here Question: I've been playing Galaxy 1&2 on Switch for the week and it hit me. You can play every Mario, almost every Zelda, every 2D Metroid... you can play almost every franchise completely on this console and / or it's very well represented Has any other console "ran out" of games to remaster? are you missing any big game I can't remember? what can they remaster next? Jet For Gemini? :D

landsealion

Which game is harder, Baby Steps or Silksong?

kajmo

Hey gang, what's the best LEGO based gag from one of the games?

Funky Duck

If you're walking around the block and see a neighbor walking toward you, what's your wave range? Are you waving from down the block or are you waiting until you're within a one-house range? Does this vary between the cohorts based on geography?

Dylan Caudill

When I was 9 I got a Mew from a Toys R Us event in my Pokemon game. A neighborhood kid asked if he could use my Gameboy to try out using Mew. When he got my Gameboy he started a new game AND SAVED it to effectively delete my Mew. Do any of the cohorts have any similar stories of gaming crimes committed against them?

landsealion

What is the best age for Halloween?

Daniel May

Hi MinnMax. Lego Party piqued a question in my head today: what genre that is dominated by one mainline game needs a challenger the most (in the way that Lego Party is to Mario Party)?

Chandler

Isn't it messed up that horsing around doesn't mean working hard despite horses being the hardest working animal? What common phrases do you dislike?

Matthew Hornyak

Hello cohorts! With the newest LEGO licensed game being Lego Horizon, and Lego mainly making non-IP games, I'm missing when LEGO would make full games encompassing entire franchises. What would be your pick for what the next licensed LEGO game should be? This can be any movie franchise, television show or even video game series.

Mike Lynch

Whenever I see a box for an original Game Boy game, the art layout gives me a fuzzy feeling similar to the excitement I felt as a kid. Is there artwork for a specific gaming system (or a apecific game)that gives you that feeling?

Tom Rickard

Hey folks! What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever found while on a walk? One time I found a working grandfather clock in a park while walking my dog, definitely not haunted or cursed!

Chris Pelley

How much do you think about the charity stream? In your head is it a tent pole event that kinda helps define every year, like the two tens?

Kraven Morcome

Hey MinnMax, I've prepared a round of the new hit gameshow that is very culturally relevant, "Loggins or Goggins". Ben will read the name of a game and the contestants have to state whether it features the music of Kenny Loggins or the voice of Walton Goggins. Grand Theft Auto V - Loggins Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 - Loggins Prey (2017) - Goggins Ace Combat 7 - Loggins Wing Commander IV The Price of Freedom - Goggins Bonus: If Walton Goggins decided to log in to GTA V, how many songs by Kenny Loggins would Walton Goggins find? -Two

Sam Hookom

On a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast, the crew went back over their 2019 GOTY list to reexamine their picks for that year. Are there any games on any of the MinnMax 2 10s that you look back and regret pushing for?

Joey Smith

I've been playing Blippo+ based on last week's discussion and loving it! It has me reminiscing about the experience of flipping through channels as a kid, especially away from home. What was the strangest thing you ever came across randomly on TV back when TV was a thing people watched? For me, it was an hours long, dialogue free marathon of animated shorts about a fly I saw in a hotel on a road trip in Canada. My child brain was mesmerized. I have since learned the show was called Fly Tales, and it holds up!

Palo

Hello hello 👋 if you had to select a *new* seven wonders of the world only using locations that at least one person on the pod has visited, what places are you all picking? [For reference, the current seven are the Colosseum, Petra, Chichen Itza, Christ the Redeemer, Machu Piccu, the Taj Mahal, and the Great Wall of China]

Stevelution

Hey Ben, Janet, Haley and Jeff. Given so many of us in the community have been posting about our Halloween movies and games for October I was kinda curious, what’s on your Mount Rushmore of horror games? To save time each of you can pick one to go up there (no shurikens this time).

Duderado

Why are Podcasters so reluctant to search something on Google during a podcast? Do you not all browse the Internet while you talk?

LivingZombie00

HANSON I went from a casual AFI fan to having them be one of my favorite bands because of your and Cork's podcast years back. I never would have dived that deep into the bands older stuff without the pod. You know what the question is; when's the new AFIO now that the new album is out?

naoh.yup

The question about niche games last week reminded me of an old defunct browser MMO that I used to play as a kid: Faunasphere. It was so cool, and there's nothing out there like it today. Have you guys ever had a beloved online game shut down?

Swansonge

Which game series is ripe for a Spooky-themed spinoff?

Fred Dinovo

Howdy folks, You ever have a fork in the road moment of any of your fandoms? Doesn't just have to be video game based. (though my example is) An example is when I was a kid I asked my parents for a SEGA for Christmas, but they got me an NES and the rest is history. Thanks mom and dad.

Nathan Ryer

Hey MinnMax! If the entire MinnMax cohort went real life kart racing, who would win? Who would fight dirty? What type of real life equivalent items would you bring to slow down your opponents? (Banana peels, oil, nerf guns, rotten tomatoes, giant plush blue shell to hurl at the leader)

lumberjack

Question for the cohorts! MinnMax is now a cozy farm game (ex: Fields of Mistria, Stardew). What are your occupations around the town? Where do you live? What's one piece of secret lore the game has on you?

Bloody Waffle

Does Little Nightmares 3 have the same feeling/vibes as the first 2 with this new developer?

Travis in Fargo

Any chance that KPOP Demon Hunters WON’T be the most popular Halloween costumes this year?

Juniper Cain

Hiya crew! Is there a definitive Lego game? So many of the particularly praised ones are licensed, but that's inherently missing the feeling of having all your Lego in a box, because they can only be one brand at a time. Which game of the entire history most encapsulates Lego as a whole for you?

Parker Aden

Hello MinnMax gang! If you could make a book into a video game, which would you choose? Doesn't have to be the same story, but expanding a world you want to see more of. It also can be for any console generation you think is most appropriate, such as Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy being a more fitting PS2 title.

Baron Aim

When I was looking at your list of games you were talking about, my very tired brain combined Little Nightmares 3 and LEGO Party into LEGO Nightmares. That got me thinking - what horror franchise could be made into a LEGO game? I instantly pictured a little Regan from the Exorcist spinning her little LEGO head around, or limbs being bloodlessly dismembered from minifigs.

Charles Davis

What everyday object do you think secretly hates it's job?

That's Mildly Raven

What's a game you thought you disliked, but when replaying years later you changed your opinion on?

Cashewual

Dear MinnMaxers: What's your favourite example of Nintendo lunacy? Mine is when during a Smash Bros Ultimate direct they suggested the Switch could be used as a portable music player to enjoy it's vast soundtrack.

Jeff D

Hi MinnMax gang! Since the Activision merger the Xbox brand has been on a nose dive and the messaging from the company has been changing month to month in a confusing way. What is another brand (non-gaming or gaming) that fell out of the public's good graces as rapidly as Xbox?

Jerry Young

Hi minnmax! Was curious your thoughts on boss fights where in addition to the boss, there are multiple minions or smaller enemies to contend with? I feel like when done well, this are great. But if done poorly, it becomes really frustrating to manage everything on screen. Hades 2 has done a great job of this with their fights. Thanks!

Antonio J.F. Rivera

Like some of you, Nintendo's recent anti-consumer behaviors and legal bullying has frustrated me. I hesitate to buy into their exclusives despite many having a level of quality that is often seen as a step above the competition. With both Lego Party and Sonic Racing: Crossworlds getting positive coverage, what are some other games y'all like that emulate or adapt Nintendo's key titles, and maybe do it better? What does what Nintendon't?

CptCobblePot

Jeff M mentioning Cuphead a few podcasts ago and it infected me to try it again. The animation is superb but this game is so damn hard. What game is considered a masterpiece but you just can’t get into? Inverse, what one finally clicked after multiple startups? (For me: FF7)

SlyCut

Hello all, You can only have one: Microwave Dishwasher Bidet Which do you choose?

PJ

Howdy Cohorts! I recently finished the cyberpunk DLC and without spoilers ended up with what would be potentially be considered the "bad" ending, but it absolutely hit me like a ton of bricks and I loved it for that. So my question to you is, what is the best "bad" ending you’ve ever seen in a game?

Adam Castellanos

When I was 22 I found out I was missing a vertebrae in my spine. Are there any crazy things that you lived your whole life without knowing about yourself? *PS to Leo, DOUBLE BAND DOUBLE BAND!

Luca Alberti

Hello MM crew! How is everyone holding up with the current release onslaught? I think I kept up with the games I was really into but October is when everything hits the fan and my backlog starts stacking new layers

Hi MinnMax! Man, playing Battlefield 6 sure feels weird now, huh? It got me thinking about other games that are forever associated with events entirely outside of the game's control. For example, I can never play Hi-Fi Rush again without thinking about how its studio made a hit and was then snapped out of existence. What's your game where you find it impossible to separate it from the context it was made?

TheMightyEthan

I just wanted to write in with a Betterquest update. Last year I wrote in to set myself a goal of learning Japanese, and just last week I hit a 1 year streak of practicing every day! I'm still nowhere near my goal of being able to play games fully in Japanese, but I've been playing everything I can with Japanese audio and I'm definitely able to pick out more and more words and phrases as I go on. I'll write back when I hit my 2 year streak!

Jeff D

One more question Move over EVO! The Microsoft excel world championships in Las Vegas is quickly approaching on December 1-3 https://excel-esports.com . If all the cohorts competed in excel, who would come out in first? If you sent someone to Las Vegas to cover the competition who would have the most fun covering the event?

Is it ok to give your pet a well known human name like Max, Lucy, Hunter, Sadie etc.? On the flip side, would it be ok for people to give their kid a name like Lucky, Shadow, Peanut, Princess etc.?

How would the switch 2’s reception be different if Nintendo had waited to release Tears of the Kingdom with its release? Did they pick the most effective strategy?

OhMyBlob

Playing Yotei this week has been amazing - feels like Tsushima on steroids and Atsu immediately feels like a more engaging character than Jin. It got me thinking if there’s any indispensable main character left in gaming? Even Mario games don’t need Mario as the main character anymore. Is there any existing franchise that wouldn’t survive without its main character?

Julio Rivera

Hi MinnMaxers As an adult with 12 hours of the day dedicated to work, I find little time to play and even less to engage with a community which I long for since I rarely talk games with anyone. As a noob Discord user, do you have any recs to use it? I feel like i lose any sense of communication there unlike Online Forums back then where it seemed easier to keep track of. Please take care, things sure seem dire in the US right now to say the least.

Derek Achoy

If controller rumble disappeared tomorrow, how much would you care?

Daniel Doran

What’s your favorite board game or card game based on a video game?

Memory Card

Assuming you have, what was the first time you spent money in a free-to-play game?

Nate Voris

Playing Silent Hill F it occurred to me how often games give the player healing items that are randomly left out in the open. If you ever randomly came across pills, loose bandages, or even food/drinks would you use them? Why are video game characters ok with blindly ingesting things they find on the street?

Maestro_T

Hey minnmax! Whats the best accessories that isn’t that necessary and what is the worst accessory that is very necessary?

Are smash burgers superior to standard fat-boi burgers? I feel like I'd always prefer a smash at this point.

Hi MinnMax, The internet was in a frenzy earlier this week when Nintendo shared the short film Close to You. How much crazier do you think the speculation around this short would have been if it ended with "Directed by Sakurai?"

Tom Brien

Did somebody ever take your game and never give it back? This is your chance to forgive them.

What’s the coolest looking yet lowest-level enemy in a video game? As in an enemy you encounter in the first dungeon of an RPG but has the design/look of a final boss?

When I was a kid, I mostly played multiplayer games with my brothers, and I didn’t play any console single-player games until I was almost graduated from high school. Now, those are most of what I play. Have the kind of games you play changed as you've gotten older? Have changes in your life affected the genres you play?

Neal McMahon

Would it be an easy W for Nintendo to come out with a Joy Con Pro? Think of a better grip on each side? Like what the Portal did? Common Nintendo—take my money.

With that Xbox big price hike my 20 year long subscription has now ended. I’m a lifelong console gamer looking to fully embrace pc and steam. But how long can steam be the perfect bastion it currently is?

In honor of LEGO party hopefully bringing a new wave of mini-game goodness, What's the best mini-game game of all time?

Josh Johnson

Songs and even movies are often "covered" by new artists or directors, and made their own. What company do you think could cover a game and make it significant better for you? Examples: naughty dog covering Mario 64, rockstar taking a shot at ghost of tsushina, supergiant going after diablo 4 etc

Kellogs

What vegetable do you always end up throwing away all or most of?

Tokyo Game Life

Anyone else think the mom in the Close To You video left the baby unsupervised for far too long?

Howdy y'all! The line up of characters for Sonic Racing has put forward an interesting quandary for me: I barely have nostalgia for Sonic as someone who thought the Genesis games were cool, but none of the other Sonic characters, BUT a lot of these DLC characters like Hatsune Miku, Mega Man, Joker, and Ichiban I'd have fun racing as. Pac-Man I would rather race as than 90% of the Sonic characters. While clearly this indicates I am not the target audience, I was curious if there is any game you can think of where you have been interested enough in optional content in a game to even consider buying it when you have 0 or minimal interest in the base content?

Jacob Mazanowski

If real life was a video game world what would be the best and worst part? Best: finding money and useful items just lying around everywhere Worst: invisible walls

Jacob Mazanowski

Outside of Toilet paper, what’s the worst household item to run out of when you need it?

What is the correct distance to hold the door open for someone? Have you ever been in a situation where you underestimated the distance and it became akward?

wittynicknamehere .

You can go back in time thirty years, and you can bring back one game to show everyone, knowing that it may steer the entire future of gaming and make some games not exist that we know now, or make them notably different due to the influence your bizarre future relic will have. The catch is that you can only bring a game universally accepted to be bad. Which do you show? Do you risk changing the entire lineage of 3D platformers by showing everyone Balan Wonderworld? Do you risk ruining open worlds forever by playing them a little MindsEye? Do you roll the dice on The Quiet Man? Would Lord of the Rings fans just love the Gollum game regardless, and it changes nothing in gaming history? Or do you have a better way to thread the needle and show them something you KNOW will blow their minds despite being, to our modern sensibilities, terrible?

FinalSin

Hey all, why don't you all have regional accents? Is it something you do consciously? Every once in a while I'll catch it, but not very often.

Jc Ice

You ever think about how you have all these memories you can’t access? I was watching old 80’s commercials on YouTube and ran into one about a cartoon called The Get Along Gang. I never thought of this show literally since the 80’s. But once I saw the ad all those old memories unlocked about my sister and I watching this on Saturday mornings. What hidden knowledge have you unlocked with a video, picture, sound, or even a smell?

Brad Beyer

Hey crew, not a question but an episode or two ago you had a discussion about conductors and whether or not they are musicians. I am a band director by profession, so obviously I would argue that a conductor is a musician even though they are not creating sound themselves per se. To give a little insight, there is more going on in a conductor’s gestures than you might initially think, especially at professional levels. In addition to the obvious pulse generation that helps keep the ensemble together as they play, you as the conductor are reading the music just like the players and helping prepare them for what’s to come. For instance, if the trumpets have to make an important entrance on beat 3 of a measure, the conductor usually has to do a preparatory gesture on beat 2 to prepare them to come in together at that point. In that one gesture (coupled with your full body presence and facial expression), you communicate to the players the style, tempo, articulation type, volume, length and expressiveness of that note or phrase. And that’s just an entrance for one instrument. Your average concert band score will show you the parts for anywhere from 12-30 different instruments all at once. Then there are tempo changes to consider, which must be accomplished together without anyone getting ahead or behind the rest, and that’s all if everyone is actually playing everything correctly. If you have players who got off the beat or missed a cut-off, repeat sign or coda you may have to alter whatever you’re doing in the middle of a performance to help everyone find their way back to the right place. This is particularly true for younger players who are more prone to lack consistency in tempo, miss quick changes, misinterpret rhythms, or (in my class anyway) not be playing at all because they are in fact lighting the timpani on fire. ;) Anyway, just wanted to chime in a bit because I thought you’d appreciate a little more context. Keep up the great work with the show! Brad Beyer

Brad Beyer

Also, a recent episode had Leo make mention of the piece “Bolero” by Maurice Ravel as a piece he played in high school. Get a load of this: The original version of that piece was really just sort of an experiment by Ravel to see if he could write a semi-interesting piece that was essentially one LONG crescendo. Well he succeeded but did it too well. Bolero became hugely popular and to this day is probably his most famous work, much to the chagrin of Ravel himself who hated the fact that his little game of a piece that he made for himself was vastly overshadowing all of his more “serious” works.

Graham Jones

Hey crew, I have recently been playing and enjoying Hades 1 a lot but it's making me also reflect on how it compares to Expedition 33 (my current favorite game of all time). They are both such different experiences in what they set out to do. I feel that Hades leans into gamifying it's story where as Expedition 33 uses the game format to tell an excellent story. That has me thinking, how do you prioritize gameplay vs story in a game as far as what makes the best experiences? Also, how do you compare these types of games?

beebat

The recent sequel double feature of Yotei and Hades II made me wonder: When a sequel to a game you haven’t played comes out, do you find yourself going back to the original first to give yourself the full experience, or do you jump right in with everyone else and skip the original?

Is there a dream project you’ve thought about doing but haven’t tackled yet?

What are some must-have decorative items to get in the mood for spooky season?

Phelix Diaz

I have been enjoying paring games with movies/series that influence them. For example watching 13 Assassins prior to Yotei or Alien Earth prior to Dark Descent. How do you get hyped up before you get to play your next anticipated game?

Oliver Watts

We all enjoy games differently and for different reasons. What are the main aspects that cause you to love a game. For example graphics, art style, music, story. What of these aspects do you resonate with the most? If this gets discussed I have a follow up question for next week.

Josh LaBaw

Howdy Cohorts, Is there enough nostalgia for Dreamcast that Nintendo & Sega would be working on a Dreamcast game collection for Nintendo Online?

resnet

Hi MinnMax? Is there a dream LEGO set that you'd for sure buy if they make it?

b_wood

When discussing Team Cherry last week, Jason Schreier kinda touched on something I have been thinking about. Do we as fans pay too much attention to game sales? How does it benefit us to care so much about how well or how poorly a game has sold?

SouthSide_Abbot

Hello MinnMax crew, No question this week, just wanted to drop off some "Garcia Glaze". The last time Janet was on the podcast she had a few quotes that I feel went underappreciated. Lines such as, "If you could squeeze the juice fast enough, it's a great drink" when taking about the ending to Blue Prince. "If you played what I played for 8 hours, you might also have some criticisms of this game" and "I'm playing it as far as the game lets me play it" when discussing Silksong. And finally, "Thats like saying 'you gotta incentivize jumping in Mario.' Baby that's the game!". I don't know who let her cook, but she's serving up dishes Studio Ghibli couldn't animate.

bizkiut (Nick S.)

Hey CLCs, I was thinking about regionally exclusive food items the other day. I live in the UP, so we have pasties (pass-tees) here. For those who don't know, a pasty is kind of like an enclosed meat pie. They are culturally significant because the miners in the area brought them over from England as a good food to keep you warm by putting it in your pocket. Minneapolis of course, has the juicy Lucy. What's some others you have tried and what is your favorite regionally exclusive food?

Ari

Hey Minnmax, This past week I was talking with my buddy about silk song. He couldn't believe that this huge game costs $20. Made him feel that it was "punk rock". That they are sticking it to the man, or to AAA games with their $80 price tag. This made me think of the original Doom. Also made by a small team, turn the industry upside down, and eventually they even released their source code to the public for free! Are there other moments in gaming or media you gave you that punk rock/ sticking it to the man feeling?

Robert Key

What is your favorite Easter egg or small detail in a game that you discovered completely on your own? For me, I realized in Ocarina of Time that you can't beat Ganondorf with the Big Goron Sword, which is much stronger than the Master Sword. I remember fighting him for at least 10 and him not dying. Then I switched to the Master Sword, swiped him once, and finished the fight. I still think this is such an incredible lore detail from Nintendo.

CaffeineDad

Hey yall! It’s October so we have to start talking about scary movies. What’s the scariest movie from your childhood? I saw Phantom of the Paradise, this rock opera comedy(?) by Brian De Palma, and a scene where a character talks to the devil in a restroom mirror had little me too afraid to go take a shower because obviously the devil was going to get me.

Arbz0414

Do you associate a month to a color, like April being red or January being a light blue?

Thomas Rohn

Hey MinnMax, Are there any words or phrases that you aren't a fan of being used to describe games? For instance, labels that follow the "insert similar game here"-like naming convention (roguelike, soulslike) have been argued about since before MinnMax started
