What’s the “Marvel fatigue” of video games?

As Spring starts to happen I'd like to thank the farmers. Do you every think about how a job so critical to society feels like a dieing art?

Victor Pham

What's a business expense request that would be denied by Ben Hanson?

Hi Minnmax! What is your all time favourite community question? I appreciate you in a non-parasocial way!

SlyCut

Hello all, Whenever I am drinking a bottled beverage, I always have to have the front of the label facing me. I will turn it to face me before taking a sip. I've done this since I was a kid. I don't even think about it, I just do it. Am I weird? Do any of you have a similar quirk?

Fancygraham

East coast question for Haley: I really enjoy the band The East Pointers from PEI. I just saw them in Regina recently and I thought they were great. I like Canadian east coast folk music a lot, but I’ve never “actually” been there (clarification: I have been there, I was born there, but moved as an infant and have never been back yet). As someone who lives on the east coast, what are your thoughts on folk music? Is it too much? Or is it a point of pride?

Xavier Perez

Hey crew, if you could mash two series together to make your ideal game, what would you choose? As a big SMT and Fire Emblem fan, I still can’t believe Tokyo Mirage Sessions exists and wish I had more of it.

Hello! Recently I've been into setting up old consoles on a CCTV CRT with S-Video. I started with simple consumer CRT and now I'm deep in forums trying to minmax this setup with special cables, and switchers, and settings. Are any of you into CRTs or have you had a simple hobby delve into the abyss or the point of no return? Patrick G

Last summer it was reported that roughly 50% of active PSN users still use a PS4. If GTA VI is not delayed, what percentage of people do you think would upgrade to current gen? Do you think the launch could be big enough to lead to a shortage in hardware?

Michael Berry

Which game were you charmed by it's ambition for really swinging for the fences, but maybe not sticking the landing? That game for me is Star Wars: Elite Squadron for PSP. They had ground battles that could transition to space battles and had online multi-player on the PSP!!! The game is not perfect, but I am charmed by how much it achieves on a handheld.

What is the best kind of "bread"? French baguette, naan, bagels, bao, something else?

Kanchilla

Congratulations! You're the hot new auteur director and everyone wants to know what your next movie is! What video game are you adapting to keep up your cool indie auteur persona?

Chuck Zich

Hello all, my question is do you think we are at peak design for controllers in terms of layout at this point? It seems like everything has gravitated to 4 shoulder buttons with the backs being trigger shaped, 2 sticks, a dpad and 4 face buttons in a diamond shape. Is there a world where 6 face buttons come back or is that crazy talk?

Jump On Everything

What's a game that you've never stopped thinking about? It's been almost a year since blue prince released but the atmosphere of that game has stuck with me so significantly that it just pops into my head when I'm out and about, dragons dogma has also had this effect on me.

L Stockler

Hey! Jason Schreier recently said, in an interview with Gamespot, that the increase in prices and development time could push game development away from the United States and to cheaper countries around the globe (granted that indies and double As would remain in the States). Looking at other industries, it does seems like a natural move for the game industry. What's your take in this matter?

Cath

It happens with animal crossing new horizon and it’s happening again: seeing the insane build in pokopia makes me feel bad about my crappy not super well design on. I know I shouldn’t care. But I am. Help?

Swansonge

What percentage of the year do you think you go back and play “old games” vs games that came out in the current year? What’s the “old game” you’ve played most recently? Obviously covering new games is a huge part of content of the show but I had also recently I’ve appreciated Leo talk about taking sometime to talk about dipping into Spider-Man or the Division on recent eps. Even though I’m not in the industry, I sometimes feel pressure to keep up to date with the new hotness in my hobby, but I also like revisiting classic bangers (recently I started Chrono Trigger DS)

Christopher Monroe

Howdy! Crimson Desert’s getting a lot of attention right now, and for good reason. It’s big, it’s bold, it’s beautiful and, if some conversations are any indication, it’s a decent showcase for what a “next-gen” game can look like in 2026. Question is though: with diminishing returns on graphical capability and all of the things we used to measure “next-gen” by in the past, what would a game have to do/be for you to call it “next-gen?”

Jesse V

If you could port a modern game to a retro console with its constraints, what would it be and why?

Joe Kafchinski

My wife and I got a new puppy last week and named him Pikmin. Despite the fact that this is our seventh dog and we both love videogames, this is the first game-themed name we've chosen. What are your favorite videogame inspired pet names?

gybones

Pokopia is so full of sweet little interactions where whoever you’re helping out is so appreciative and expressive and ebullient. What’s the last IRL interaction that left you with the same type of warm fuzzy feeling?

Hey MinnMax, While I never owned a N64, I loved that GoldenEye had big head mode, paintball mode and other things we could define as whimsy; did developers lose their whimsy or was it just outsourced via mods?

RynaGoGo

Howdy MinnMax! Ben wanted even more questions to go through this week so he made it free! If you had some Animorph powers what animal are you changing into first, and what animal would you absolutely never turn into?

Ghoul's Fold

What else does JeffM do? I know what the other cohorts do when not on Minnmax, but he remains an enigma. Is he a private eye, a ninja, or a superhero?

Is there any visual artstyle that, to your knowledge, has never been integrated into a video game, and you’d like to see it?

Hey Minnmaxers, What adds more to an open world: Weather, day/night cycles, or wildlife?

In honour of MGS D Fox Hunt, what film has been more influential on video games than Escape From New York? Watching that for the first time recently, it was staggering to see how much Kojima has lifted from it

It's tax season! Do Minnesota taxes suck? How does Haley figure out her taxes in the Great North?

Hi MinnMax! We often have conversations about clumsy sexualization in video games but I wonder if there is any game that you actually find sexy. As a side note, thanks for helping me getting through the previous winter. You guys rule!

Happy to hear about all of your travel plans this year both for MinnMax and personal vacations! What are your go to tips for vacation planning?

Imagine for a moment that mid-budget licensed and tie-in console games are still being made. What license would you love in game form, be it movie, show, book, comic, stage play, podcast, or anything else??

J.Vaso

We all know "im glad it exists" means you don't like the game but you maybe at least respect it, but are there any games that you're not glad they exist? Like you enjoy them but view their existence as a negative?

Bryan Tylec

Hey MinnMax crew! I’m sorry to tell you this, but you are obligated to have your non-dominant hand replaced by a controller. The good news is that you get to choose which kind. So what are ya picking? A PS5 controller with all the haptic feedback just so you can still feel something? An Atari 2600 so you’ll have a permanent middle finger raised to the universe? Something else? Your choice.

Juniper Cain

Hi Minnmax! In honor of Free Week, it is often said that "the best things in life are free." So what's the worst thing you ever accepted, simply because well, it *was* free...?

whitemex

Let's talk movie titles! Specifically, the Ready or Not movie titles. Recently the sequel to the first movie released with the clumsily titled, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Terrible name right? Doesn't need the 2 in there mucking it up. Now if this movie is a big enough hit to warrant another sequel in the franchise, what the heck do they call it? They have seemingly painted themselves into a corner with this naming convention. The obvious subtitle is "You Can't Hide" but they can't name the movie, Ready or Not 3: Here I Come: You Can't Hide. That's worse! What do you all think the title should be? Am I overthinking this? Am I nuts? Are there any titles that bother you this much?

thejjuan1

Hello Minnmax crew. Is Final Fantasy a doomed series? A gamesradar article came out about the state of Final Fantasy and how the director Yoshi-P looks at the future of the franchise. He said that many younger players are not connecting with the series as many of them are accustomed to action games and competitive online games. Mat Piscatella even supported this claim as he wrote on Blue Sky. “According to Circana's PlayerPulse, 62% of US players of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth were aged 35 or older. That number goes to 77% if you go 30+.” Making it an official Unc status game. What do you guys think? How can Square save Final Fantasy’s future? Drop the numbers finally like Resident Evil? More remakes? Or let the franchise die with all of us Uncs?

Nathan Ryer

Hey MinnMax! Will anything be able to dethrone Pokemon Pokopia as number one on the Two Tens this year? All Hail King Marill! May you never evolve.

Dayten Rose

For the Max Spoilers crew: I was a linguist when Arrival came out and had many discussions about its accuracy, namely that its formulation of the Sapir Whorf hypothesis (that language structures thought) is largely discredited. Still, I loved the film and thought its "inaccuracies" really worked for the story it was telling! How distracting do you find it when media gets things "wrong"? I feel like sci fi and fantasy have become obsessed with rules over themes. (Maybe this is especially important in games, where you sort of have to know the rules in order to play?)

Chris Pelley

Pokopia: how much of the magic will be lost if I don't play it until months from now?

Malcolm Holliday

Hey MinnMax! With so many hobby and indie game developers posting their process and journey on YouTube are there any you check out? Or would rather not know how the sausage is made?

Joe Dean

Ben, after sorting through all the questions on this post, how much do you regret making questions open to the public?

Devin B

In spirit of free week, what's the best free thing you've ever received?

LlorchDurden

from the recent PPB PSP episode Ben, have you ever covered a PSP game on a cover trip? or has any PSP / Handheld game ever got a cover trip?

Mark

Hello MinnMax. A little while ago, food Youtuber Internet Shaquille commented on a Northernlion video on the channel 'The Library of Letourneau'. Of course this took the comment section by complete surprise, and the Internet Shaquille comment is the top comment. My question is, have you ever had anyone noteworthy and unexpected comment on a video, write in a letter to GI, procure legal services, etc.? Thank You, Splendiferous Walnut P.S. ( link to said video if you are curious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s-VsCDeZ60 )

This spring I've been doing some home improvement projects, including getting a better office setup and a new bedroom layout! What projects around the house have you been doing, or hope to do as the months get warmer?

JEREMY L

I need to point out an injustice! On the bonus pod this week, while discussing drag, Ben makes a comment about making drag the theme for the give to the max stream, to which Haley replied "but then you'd need to be in drag the whole night", to which Ben responded, "And that would be a drag." I thought that was hilarious! I'm even laughing now while typing this. But Haley barely even paused and didn't respond to Ben's AMAZING pun at all. I couldn't let this slide without a comment. #justiceforBen #justiceforpuns

Dear FreeMaxers! I've been playing Assassin's Creed Origins recently and really like the way the game handles its two playable protagonists, Bayek and Aya. It's one of the few games I can think of where the characters are already married and the game explores how their relationship can still change thanks to the plot. Can y'all think of many other playable marries couples? Or games that tackle marriage in interesting ways? Thanks!

Jack Seage

Ahoy hoy, CLC's! Would you rather only be able to play games that are part of a franchise or only be able to play one-off games?

hardIIfind

Hello. My question is, how often do you see your birthday in gaming? The Voi Memorial in Halo takes place on my 560th birthday, Halo 1 was released on steam on my 27th birthday and the Switch came out on my 24th birthday (March 3rd). Thanks for all that you do. I love you guys!

BEEFCAKE

Hello my parasocial friends! I was trying to think of the first game I ever rolled credits on and I'm pretty sure it was Kingdom Hearts which was a pain in the ass because I didn't know you could add combat abilities and I was beating my head against the ground trying to beat Riku for forever. Anyways, can you remember the first game you rolled credits on? And have you ever accidentally made the game harder like I did? Sincerely, your bestest buddy Beefcake.

Simon Povey

Hello from sunny England! Ever since Ben told the story of his wife packing dried Mango for his plane journeys I haven’t been able to get enough of the stuff!! My question is what snack recommendations have other MinnMaxers got for me? Broaden my horizons! Love the pod, Simon

Hello Minners, what's your go-to technique for convincing someone that a game you really love is worth checking out?

Vilis

Alright, everyone likes choices where you consign your destiny to a narrow option, but this time with rhymes. For the rest of your life, would rather: 1. Dine with Finery in a Winery 2. Say Amen for your Ramen 3. Eat Fettuccine in a Lamborghini Now for all the nitty gritty details everyone going to ask about: Yes, the costs are covered for the food, or if there is a cost it would be no more than what you already normally pay for food. For the finery in the winery, you have endless wine, but the food is gonna be charcuterie and little artisinal pizzas and half sandwiches each with one strange fruit you're afraid to ask what it is, and it's never quite enough to fill you up. Also the other people around are wine snobs or wine moms. For Amen for Ramen, you eat at a cathedral where they serve very good Ramen. Why? One of the nuns used to be an exceptional Ramen stall owner in Japan, and knows the traditional tea ceremony. The nuns are generally chill, but you can't swear while you're there, and they'll ask you about your personal life. For fettuccine in a Lamborghini, it should be noted you don't own the car, you just have to eat there. Why??? The car belongs to the Italian Mafia and they need a perpetual look out in the get away car. It's a rough life, but weirdly only at meal times, and damn it's good fettuccine made by the godfathers own mother. Sometimes you even get a spare canoli. Feel free to concoct your own rules, but those were the parameters I came up with.

Matt White

Hey all, Over the weekend in Minnesota there was a massive tragedy in the hockey world when a Wild reporter and her three children lost their lives in a house fire. As I have been consuming media this week and listening to stories about a person I’ve never met but have consumed media of I found myself openly weeping. I’m curious in an increasingly toxic landscape of social media and online presence what is something beneficial to come from parasocial relationships for you all over the years? I find myself having a larger sense of community and compassion for humanity in general lately. Also here is a link to a gofundme for Jessi Pierce’s surviving husband and family if anyone wants to donate. https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-mike-hinrichs-after-losing-jessi-pierce-children

Hey Minn Max crew. What is your favorite video game ad? TV commercial or magazine ad works. One that I remember fondly is the original smash bros with the Nintendo characters frolocking and happy together playing in the background, and all of a sudden they just start beating each other up. Still watch that from time to time to this day.

PhillyYeetSteak

What do you think is the game sequel that is least newcomer-friendly? There are so many instances of studios saying "this one is a great jumping on point" when it obviously isnt true.

Sergio

Hello MinnMax! What's your favourite discussion of death in a video game? Given it's the one place we're all going do you think it should be dealt with more?

Joey Smith

What recent game could benefit from having FMV cutscenes instead of in-engine or pre-rendered cutscenes?

Clayton Carroll

Hey Minnmax. I recently finished every single JeffM video on the stream archive channel. So I have a request. JeffM could you please knock out a few years worth of content real quick so I have something to watch/listen to. I'm jonesing for some JeffM, and I need my fix. Your the only drug for me.

Hi MinnMax, Provided money was not an issue, would you guys want to be an "open to the public, anyone can participate" community or do you think you'd still prefer the more insular Patreon/Discord invite community?

Travis in Fargo

Are you smarter now than you’re ever been? If not, when were you the brightest?

Travis in Fargo

Has a video game ever done something so shocking, disgusting, or utterly horrifying that it made you physically ill?

Adam Castellanos

I recently saw a PSA commercial that featured Final Fantasy 7. The PSA was trying to encourage people in conversations about mental health. This got me thinking what other video game properties would combine well for a PSA commercial? Thank you

Josh Lamm

Happy free week! From all the shows and events you all have attended, what's the best free thing you ever received?

Travis in Fargo

My spouse Whitney has a question: if someone is 50 years old, having a midlife crisis, and they have never played a video game before, what would you recommend starting with?

Oliver Smith

Hey Minnmax, My buddy Austin is a huge Minnmax supporter, all around great dude, and the reason I started watching & supporting the channel. He just got engaged to his wonderful fiance Alex, and I think it would mean a lot to them to give them a shoutout on his favourite podcast. Thanks a bunch and keep doing what you're doing! PS -- excited to hear your thoughts on Screamer. I picked up early access and love it so much that it may be an early GOTY contender for me.

AlexTheSnood

On Bonus Pod, Hayley brought up the potential value of going viral. She cited Britanny Broski as an example. As another example, I ask you, what will be MinnMax’s “Hawk Tuah” moment?

Bob Buel

What’s the logic behind Tail Whip in Pokemon? Why does that move lower defense? I understand Growl lowering attack, ok that would intimidate you. I understand Leer lowering defense, as like keeping eye contact, ok. But Tail Whip?

Sean

Hey Minnmax, How often do you reassess your favorite games? Do you wait until you replay it? Do you wait until you play something that's around the same level of quality and impact?

ennui_enthusiast

What singular game mechanic can universally improve a genre? I've enjoyed nearly every grapple hook I've used in an action game.

WeGoGiant

Hey, MinnMax. There's a trend I'm seeing called The Tower. Two players pick a category in the same medium (movies, bands, video games, etc) without telling the other what the category is. Let's assume video games since it's a gaming podcast. They then take turns naming games and asking the other person if it's in their category or not. Once a player has 4 'yes' answers from their opponent they can then choose to guess the category or keep naming games to try to figure it out. The first player to guess the other player's category wins. I think it could be fun to have two of the cohorts try to play this against each other. It's best to tell any other cohorts not playing what the categories are so they can help answer if the player doesn't know if it's a yes or no. Here's an example of how it's played (though this uses bands instead of games) https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWE6JOCASih/

Kyle Silva

I think about the offbeat Game of the Year wins often. Giant Bomb once said Tetris Effect was the best of 2018, Game Informer picked Halo Infinite in 2021, GDC’s panel chose Untitled Goose Game among 2019 games. Do any offbeat GOTY’s permeate your mind?

b_wood

On Bonus Pod, Haley mentioned her love for Rebecca Sugar and Steven Universe music. I have actually re-entered my binge-Steven-Universe-music phase and I am really enjoying some music from the movie I never heard. So I was wondering, what are Haley’s favorite songs from Steven Universe? To not leave others out, what TV shows have music you repeatedly go back to listen to.

Jeremy Banks

Hey MinnMax, baseball is back this week! Since Kelsey isn't here this week...can this week's crew each name one active MLB player? Bonus points if you can also name the team

Victor Hensley

Howdy MinnMax! I’m playing through the RE2 Remake in preparation for Requiem, and with me currently being on my 2nd run (with Leon), it got me wondering… do you enjoy a game that asks you to play it multiple times to get the “true” ending? RE 2, NieR: Automata, even Starfield (thinking of Greg Miller and his 50 playthroughs) off the top of my head are all games that ask this of the player. Does it feel more like a waste of time, or something you genuinely enjoy doing?

Jason Wojnar

Were you a good student in school? Did video games get in the way of good grades? They absolutely did for me, but not when I was an adult and finally went to “college” once I turned 23.

CaffeineDad

What’s everyone’s favorite Pokemon?

SnowmanXIV

Hi MinnMax! What's a drastic change to the industry that you think could result in more sustainable and more innovative game development? I'll start: no more sequels or remakes. Sequels and remakes always have such high expectations to be bigger, better, prettier, and sell more than the previous one. What if we just started fresh each time?
