MinnMax's Ben Hanson, Jacob Geller, Kyle Hilliard, and special guest Bloomberg's Jason Schreier unpack the chaotic news out of Xbox that Double Fine, Ninja Theory, Compulsion Games, and more studios are in a state of flux and might be shut down if they can't find another buyer before July. Then things take a turn for the positive as we unpack Square-Enix's new HD-2D Team Asano ARPG The Adventures of Elliot: The Millenium Tales. Sarah Podzorski and Haley MacLean then join the show to talk about their big trip to Montreal for Dead by Daylight's 10th anniversary, Jacob raves about Project Wingman and Ace Combat, The Sims experts weigh in on Paralives, and we share some of our favorite Steam Next Fest demos. After that, it's nothing but your wonderful questions from here on Patreon!

Thank you Jacob for pointing out to Ben that Microsoft is not in the business of goodwill. They are in the business of pleasing their shareholders and enriching themselves (not something unique to them). Something Easy Allies, who I love, struggled with since the beginning is that they were never able to censure companies who behaved poorly for fear of losing contact with their PR departments. Independent, crowdfunded games media usually relies on those contacts for faster access to content, but relying on them turns into a small conflict of interest.

Oh and sorry for continuing to prattle on, but the government changed a tax law in 2021 that went into effect in 2022. That law changed how R&D (which all of game development falls under) is expensed. It made it so domestic R&D gets depreciated over 5 years and foreign R&D is depreciated over 15 years. By shutting down these studios, Microsoft is reducing how game development in the current year will affect their balance sheets over the next 5 and 15 years. This means foreign studios will be the most likely to be closed if they are not overwhelmingly profitable. Then you will see a consolidation of development domestically. There will be significantly fewer games from almost every major publisher starting next year because it will be 5 years since 2022. Companies who were letting studios operate over the last five years and are choosing to shut them down were probably being evaluated for profitability.

I personally think it's unlikely that Microsoft will release any of their IP, even by sale, to any studios that are able to separate successfully. That's why they spent 60 billion or whatever for intellectual property: brands as well as proprietary technology. I think there's a likely future where Ninja Theory is allowed to go independent, BUT all of the technology they developed over the years will need to be licensed from Microsoft. So if they want to use any of the proprietary motion capture they developed over the years it's likely they'll have to pay Microsoft to use it.

Jacob Geller wants to make me feel things. Jason Schrier wants me to learn things. Like them both, buy Schrier's input was so insightful. I'd love more of him on here. Especially given Ben's interest as gaming as a buisness and not just an entertainment

Ben - I worked for a while as a shipping manager at a factory that used packing peanuts almost daily. I had no idea. #notadummy

Speaking of plane exclusives, did you know Studio Ghibli's Porco Rosso was produced with Japan Airlines and premiered as in-flight entertainment?
