Currently playing through Shadow of the Collosus which has me feeling this, I love the vibe and art style, but the actual act of playing is painfully frustrating most times.

Hey MinnMax, What’s the earliest you’ve ever realized that the game you’re playing is going to end up as one of your all-time favorites? For me, that realization usually doesn’t happen until a few weeks later. Sometimes it doesn’t even hit until after I’ve finished the game and had time to reflect on it. But there have been a few exceptions. I knew pretty early on with Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and The Witcher 3. What about the rest of the crew? Which games made you realize, surprisingly early, that you were playing one of your all-time favorites?

Question to all. Why does Ben hate every RPG that is not FF7? Look at the Deepest Dive poll. No Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave. For Shame. But for real, besides Haley and Kelsey. It does seem like the cohorts don't like to play any RPGs. With Kingdom Hearts 4 announced for 2027 it’s yet another big RPG for that year. How will the Minnmax crew survive in 2027? As it seems like every game next year is a RPG. (Here’s a list for you Ben. Stranger Than Heaven, FF14 Evercold, Persona 4 Revival, Fable, Clockwork Revolution, Exodus, Final Fantasy Revelation, Pokemon Winds and Waves, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, the Witcher 3 DLC, Detarune Chapter 6, Xenoblade Genesis and now Kingdom Hearts 4. With a possibility of Persona 6 for next year as well. If leaks suggest.)

A while ago, JeffM talked about the folly of the live service industry and how companies thought the triumph of Overwatch would bring people to their hero shooters but in actuality those people were still playing Overwatch and didn't care about anything else. In contrast, last week you were talking about how the breakthrough of Stardew Valley brought loads of people into the farming sim world and would lead them to entries like Fields of Mistria. Both live service and cozy farming genres require a huge time investment, take up your life, and aim to be the only games you really play. Yet the success of Stardew Valley has spawned so much success for other games whilst Overwatch's megahit status seems to have stifled its follow-ups. Hey Minnmax, why does the farming sim genre thrive with big successes whilst the live service genre suffers from it? Apologies for the long question!

Hi all - long time listener - long time not question asker. They say Mortal Shell 2 has a twist on the Souls-like genre w/ no stamina management. Fantastic. Good for them. Lies of P moved the genre forward by introducing wooden boys. Hey all! Question for Hayes, since I'm assuming they're the biggest Kingdom Hearts nut here: Every mainline Kingdom Hearts game has had at least one world either based on a medium the series hasn't done before (the Pirates of the Caribbean and Tron worlds in KH2, every world based on a CG film in KH3), or just generally unexpected (the Nightmare Before Christmas world in KH1). With that in mind, how crazy do you think I am for theorizing that the Disney Channel cartoons from the 2010's (Gravity Falls, Star vs. The Forces of Evil, etc.) are finally going to get that treatment in KH4? There aren't exactly a lot of "big" unexpected picks left, and Nomura has to know that everyone's expecting Marvel and Star Wars this time around.

Kingdom Hearts IV is evidently bringing in characters from the cancelled mobile game (ironically enough titled Kingdom Hearts Missing Link), and the now defunct mobile game of Kingdom Hearts Union X. Final Fantasy 7's mobile game Ever Crisis has also been an attempt at restoring lost media, like the FF7 Dirge of Cerberus Lost Episode (I swear I am not making these titles up), but this too is ending service soon. How should games best handle those ties to canon but hard to access pieces of the story? Do you have favorite ways that has been done?

Hey Minnmax, As the host and producer, I imagine Ben has some fairly tangible ways to judge whether he’s doing a good job: how the podcast performs, whether the structure worked, whether everyone got involved, whether the conversation flowed, etc. But for everyone else, what makes you feel like you’ve done a good job on a podcast? Do you ever listen back to episodes you’re on and think about your own performance? Do you have things you’re consciously trying to improve, whether that’s being more concise, asking better questions, knowing when to jump in or when to let someone else speak?

Hey all, being that everyone is older, when driving do you yell at the person in front of you, especially if older than you to "hit the gas , grandma",and do you think that there is a 80yr old yelling " Come on Q tip, let's go...all these damn cotton heads"? In honour of Stanley, a game all about choices, have you made your choices yet for the upcoming years worth of releases, that drop between September 3rd and October 28th? I have genuinely had to type out everything I have an interest in, work out time and money (The time part is a rough assumption of course) and essentially tried to build my schedule of what I play in September, then October then during November and December when thankfully Ocarina is the only new game I care about coming out then. Hello cohorts! Is there a series that you walked away from, only to be pulled back in full force with a new entry? I was so hyperfixated on Kingdom Hearts in preparation for 3. I played them all pretty much in succession, and I think the burn out from that + my disappointment with how 3 turned out kinda soured me on the franchise overall. If anyone asked if I liked Kingdom Hearts, my response was "I used to". But after the D23 presentation and seeing the response from fans online, I feel like the critic from Ratatouille. I remember being 9 years old and going to my friend's house to play the original game, never getting off of Destiny Islands. I remember trying to build a Sora snowman during recess, and burning CDs with music from the game to listen to in my room, pretending I was in the game. Dang it, I do love this series, even if I haven't always liked it!

(let me post a second question cause I just remembered a better one) To the user who asked last week about people not playing fighting games, from the hardcore sim racing scene, we hear you loud and clear! On this side, we got Forza/Gran Turismo or even Mario Kart and some play those and then want to try to something more realistic. On fighting games you got Smash and that's it, and Smash is kinda like its own thing. It's hard to jump from Smash to.. Tekken right away. Fighting games need a Forza-like. Figure it out, idk how that even looks like.

How do you evaluate storytelling and writing? Last week, Ben seemed to suggest memorable quotes makes good storytelling and writing, but I think that is insufficient. GoWR has more memorable quotes than GoW 2018 but I don't think that GoWR storytelling or writing is better. I think the plot and characters and the feelings they invoke are what makes good storytelling and writing. But what do you think?

Hey Minnmax! First time asker here; I wanted to ask if there were ever external events that made you appreciate a game more? I just Finished Doom: The Dark Ages: Revelation. Besides thinking of what other subtitle starting with “re” we seem to missing from games in 2026, I felt a strong sense of melancholy while playing. I knew of the layoffs that impacted the team at id behind this wonderful game, and it caused me to slow down and take in the details a bit more. Grief certainly causes people to reflect, and this may be an obvious example, but I’d love to hear other examples of time life has made you appreciate games more.
