"The best thing you can say about Pokemon Sword and Shield is that it's a Pokemon game, but the worst thing that you can say about Pokemon Sword and Shield is that it's a Pokemon game." This is a quote from Jim Sterling's video on the new Pokemon games, and I kinda agree. While I enjoyed the game immensely playing it, I also agree with a lot of the criticisms being leveled at the game. At this point, I think I'm getting tired of the same old formula getting thrown at me. At this point, I have little faith that Game Freak will radically change the games, after all they make fairly tidy amounts of money. So I'll ask this: Are there any pokemon-like games that are the best of the series whilst avoiding the worst of these games? P.S. Loving the games your picking as B-roll on that little TV, Star Fox 64 and Star Wars Pod-racer gave a shut-in pre-10-year old self a lot of fun nights!

Recently, you were all talking about games started lists and games completed lists. It got me thinking about my criteria for putting a game down. My life has been going through a lot of changes — moving from New York to Oakland, new job, 2 year old boy, etc and I don't have a ton of time to play games now. Because of that, it's almost just as important to know when to put a game down, as it is to know what to play next. What's your own criteria for putting a game down? Is it just a feeling or a general time commitment? I've been playing through The Messenger which has a second act I want to experience but I'm finding it hard to push through to get there. Not because act one is bad, but I feel like I already get what it has to offer. Makes me long for a cheat code. Aaron in Oakland

Hey MinnMaxinistos, what game, movie or show do you feel so so about despite most people having intensely strong feelings about? Thanks! Kevin in West Hartford CT

Hey MinnMax crew! For decades, it felt like brand was perceived as the primary indicator of a game's quality: i.e. "That's a Bioware game." However, as teams and talent splintered and proliferated across the industry, those old reputations have become less accurate. In a wonderful change, we're seeing more and more individual artists recognized for their contributions to successful projects. Industry superstars have emerged like Hideo Kojima, Amy Hennig, and Ken Levine, whose careers we can watch and track between games as a premonition of quality. Sure, there have always been industry legends like Shigeru Miyamoto and John Carmack, but recognition of individuals over brand seems more universal these days than in the past. When did the general gaming public truly start recognizing the talents of individual game designers, and who are some lesser-known designers who you feel have promising careers ahead of them? Also, why don't we have a damn IMDB for game developers so we can track all this stuff? Nicholas from Phoenix, AZ

Hey MinnMaxers, Music plays a big part of why I enjoy video games, so I was wondering if you can recall a time when the music in a game enhanced your enjoyment while playing. Mine would have to be the Opera singer boss fight in NieR Automata. It’s an amazing fight that feels you with lots of emotion. Hugo.

Machine Gun Keeley

Hey MinMaxx crew, My wife uses Greek yogurt as a replacement for Sour Cream. Please tell me you condemn this practice in the strongest of terms.

Sam Wright

I just last week got a new job and went from working 15 hours a week as a server to 40 hours a week as a banker. I'm obviously very happy with the new income I'll be making, but I can't help but thinking that my gaming days are over. Between my new job, my wife and my kid I don't see myself having any free time that isn't spent with them. Have any of you gone through a similar transition? One of you is a PR guy now, which sounds like a 9-5 job, are you going through a similar issue?

Matt Sayer

Curious for y'all's thoughts on leaks in the entertainment industry, specifically those that concern product details and announcements. It feels like most serve little purpose other than to take the wind out of the sail of developer/publisher announcements or generate anger and frustration at out-of-context information. Rarely do these leaks seem to benefit anyone other than those that reveal them.

Cody Hester

Dear MinnMax, I saw Ford V Ferrari over the weekend. During the film I was reminded of how much fun I had with Forza Horizon and wanted to go back to it. Have you ever wanted to play a game because of a movie? PS Minx is a strip club in Des Moines. Keep on keepin' on and have a pleasant journey - Cody from West Des Moines

Andrew

Ben, my switch is more or less a PICROSS machine. My addiction has led me to PICROSS Kemono Friends, where you create images of anime girl-animal hybrids dressed like strippers. My question is: have you ever loved a game type so much you played a completely off the wall theme or version of the game that makes you feel ashamed/embarrassed/uncomfortable, but you put up with it because you love the gameplay.

Jason Camerano

Hey MinnMaxers, With the release of the Google Stadia and the premise of gaming wherever you are via streaming, what are your thoughts of a potential xCloud / Nintendo mashup? Microsoft has been closer with Nintendo lately, what if the Switch could be a device to run xCloud? Having Mario and Master Chief on the same system, and being able to take my Xbox games with me on the go?! Yes please. Thanks! Jason From: Yucaipa, California

austin nickelson

Hey minnmax with 2 n’s, which game series would have been better off not having a sequel/sequels and better off as a one and done.

Travis Layman

Hey Maxonistas, Travis from Las Vegas here. With the success of the witcher games I would personally love to see other games adapted from books. Stephen King's "It" would make a great horror game. I can imagine a small open world similar to Bully's in size and you as a kid travel around the small town of Derry on your bike, doing missions for other kids who have glimpsed Pennywise, as well as running/fighting the bullies in town. And then topping it off having nightmare inducing sequences with the clown himself. What books would you like to see made into video games or would make great video games?

Mitch

I grew up playing games almost exclusively on console and never got proficient gaming with mouse and keyboard on PC. Now it feels so alien and intimidating I haven’t ever tried to learn it. I’m wondering if any of you were late adopters of the mouse and keyboard and any tips you have for a newcomer

Brian W

Are you going to do more mandalorian max spoiler episodes? I’ve got a theory a certain 50 year old character will appear in a certain upcoming movie. Disney has been destroying intertwined narratives the past few years with marvel, so is it crazy to assume they would do it with this!?

Michael Moran

What's the best game named for a real person (i.e. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater)? And which of the following celebrity games would you be most excited to play? Andy Mac's Parkour Hero Leo Vader's Apricot Muncher Hang Em High Hanson's Pull-Up Challenge Dan Ryckert's Super Smash Bros Brawl but you really don't play that much because you're checking the chat Bloodborne but your Dan Tack

Zachary P Gregg

Hello MinnMax (2 n's) Crew, Are there any games that you have started multiple times but have never finished? For me, I have tried playing Final Fantasy VIII around six times just because I loved Triple Triad. I would convince myself to start the game in hopes of getting further in the game, so I could play more Triple Triad. Even though I love RPG's, I could never get into FFVIII. Thanks, Zach from Binghamton NY (meth country) AKA: Undead Merchant

Eric Seal

Yo MannMixers, when a game gives you a hideout/base/what-have-you to call your own, how customizable do you like it to be? Do you want to be able to rearrange the furniture as you see fit, or just give the place a name? Do you like to adorn it with pets you've captured, or simply enjoy changing the song that plays when you enter? Cant wait to do all of the above with the next Animal Crossing game that releases next year (God willing)!

Respect_Pizza

Hello new favorite podcast! I was playing Ring Fit Adventure today and had to fight Dragaux, the boss that appears at the end of every world. This big beefy dragon is the best villain OF THE YEAR, and has a great design. I truly believe that this guy is top 10 villains of the decade, even though all you have to do is workout in front of him to beat him. Do you have any favorite baddies in games, movies, or tv? If so, who (or what)?

Thomas Hoster

Hey Minnmax! With all your time in the industry have any of you guys tried any simracers: assetto corsa, dirt rally 1.0/2.0, iracing, etc? Have you guys used a sim rig to play them? A long with this question I know with the announcement of Half Life Alyx I saw many dog on VR but VR has really revolutionized sim racing.

Thomas Deranek

Hi MinnMax Crew! I'm writing in with a question about a question. Recently on another Minnesota-based gaming podcast that you used to host and/or appear on, I won't say which one, a reader wrote in asking about the mosquito population in Minnesota. My question is this. Is the mosquito population there in Minnesota as bad as this anonymous podcast made it out to be? They related the mosquito presence to weather patterns and miserable rainy days. As someone who wants to visit Minneapolis, it scared the heck out of me.

This is the first Pokémon game I have not bought at launch due to dexit and the game not feeling like it should be $60. The game itself has reviewed very well from most outlets and Pokémon games also review very well. Kyle said he has given multiple Pokémon games 8.75s in years past. However, I don’t see how this game and series can get such big passes on gameplay/presentation aspects. Or praise for things most games got rid or fixed years ago. For example the animations in the games are super stiff when it comes to cutscenes or Pokémon moves (like double kick) but it always gets a pass. Also there is no voice acting and the character models barely emote. In IGN’s review the game got praise for removing random encounters even though they got removed last game. And the game cut down on some hand holding even though the series should have been way less aggressive about it in previous games. They cut out Pokémon to improve the game but I don’t see any major improvements in the game. Just a gimmick (megas, z moves, gigamxing) gameplay mechanic change (360 degree of motion, no gyms, wild areas), and minor improvements elsewhere (and that gets good scores. Meanwhile we have seen other Nintendo franchises taken dramatic leaps moving to Switch but it seems like Pokémon missed the boat. TLDR: when should games get penalized for not shaking up the formula enough. In the same vein, Isn’t it weird that Pokémon always gets the same scores even if they are are pretty similar each time.

Ryan Schaefer

Have any of you ever had to deal with burnout (the work/life concept, not the racing game)? If so, how do you manage that without quitting your job when video games are also your job?

Zaid Al-Wasiti

Hey dude broskis, What your thoughts on snacking during a gaming session. Do guys have some ‘must haves’ when gaming? Personally, some cold ass lemonade and some sour patch kids really do it for me.

NikkiNSane

Hey there Ben and the MinnMax crew! This question seeks a bit of insider information about this very segment of your show. You put out the post to get community feedback a day before recording the episode, and I'm curious how you go about reading all of the comments to pick the ones that make the show better. Do you read them periodically over the course of the day when you make the post, or do you shotgun all of them at once before the show and just grab the ones you like? Is it all Ben's picks, or do you ask the rest of the crew to look through them with you? Thanks, guys, and keep up the great work!

MoreMemeThanMan

Hey Maxxinistas, My question is about HDR in console games, more precisely why is it so inconsistent and often just straight up broken a lot of the time? In my experience it looks phenomenal in Modern Warfare and Destiny 2 but bad to middling in Red Dead and Fallen Order (to name a few). Not only this but apps like Netflix and Disney+ have issues outputting HDR turned on (on xbox). What gives? Engine issues? Dev foibles? Mario van peebles? Thanks for reading my comment *waves jedi hand* Nick from Los Angeles

Hey guys! Ever since I started following you all at GI, I've been amazed at the amount of games you all have been able to play and finish. I get that it was always a part of the job, and that changes things a bit, but I've almost always found the amount of games that I want to check out overwhelming. There are so many good games coming out these days, but with a lot of them being a full 40+ hour investment to get through, I can't possibly find the time to play everything without becoming a hermit completely devoted to playing what I want to play. Do you guys have any advice on managing a backlog that seems to always grow bigger and bigger? Is there a good way that you've found to decide what you play and what you have to leave by the wayside? Thanks bois

Kyle G

You touched on Mass Effect last week: are there any rumblings at all of an original trilogy remaster or rerelease for consoles? 🤞🏻

Mark Polley

I picked up Breath of the Wild again last week, I completed it 2 years ago, but basically stuck to the critical path - I never really felt the call to explore and have fun. I never really "Got" the game Now when I'm playing it, without feeling the need to rush to the conclusion- I am finally exploring, clambering over things and seeing where the game takes me. I've already discovered so much new content and I'm having a blast. What games have you played, where it wasn't until a later playthrough - that you finally felt the pieces fall into place and you could see the hype? Mark P (Cardiff, Wales)

David blessman

Would you add the nemesis system to a Batman game?

Nathan Notah

Hello Minnmaxers, with 2020 approaching what would you say are your top five games of the decade. I would may are 1) Mass Effect 2, 2) Persona 5, 3) Yomawari Midnight Shadows, 4) El Shaddai, and Mario Kart 8. -Nate N from Korea

Hans Kleinenberg

Working at Game Informer obviously gave you guys a lot of possibilities when reaching out to industry people. Have you found that to be more difficult now without the @gameinformer.com in your e-mail address, and maybe less of a commercial incentive to answer? Also, when looking towards the (distant) future, 1 or 2 or maybe 5 years down the road, do you see yourself adding more serious content, like NoClip's documentary pieces? Ben, you stated on multiple occasions how you enjoyed making the Smash doc, so I can imagine wanting to do something similar in the future? Would Jeff, Kyle or Suriel maybe like to?

Dakota Salmeron

Hey, MinnMax crew.  Here's a quick game for you guys. On a whim, I recently started playing Final Fantasy XII: Zodiac Age on my Switch. The 2x speed is a lifesaver. Maybe I’m missing out on some of the essence of the original, but it makes grinding a breeze and has kept me playing long after I likely would have otherwise. What’s your philosophy on features like this in remakes (save states, cheats, 2x speed, etc.)?

Super_DAC

Howdy guys! This week I was playing Pokémon GO and noticed a raid was going on in a cemetery, and that’s how I came up with my question for this week. What’s the weirdest place you’ve played a game?

Sophie

Just throwing it out there, I don't really want to be called a "Minnx", or whatever. MinnMaxer is just fine! Also, I had no idea that Jeffm studied abroad in Hiroshima for a year, that's really neat. :) Hanson, your pronunciation of "sou desu ne" was causing me physical pain. ~ Sophie (from LA / Boston, a female listener, wow!!! :P )

Fred Dinovo

There’s been a lot of discussion about review scores recently. Have you thought about how you would score games at MinnMax if that were to become a thing? Would you want to do something different than a number like... Two N’s: Can’t miss game One N: Good to great No N’s: decent with flaws to bad. Maybe watch Suriel or Kyle stream it. If not that what about something like Gamexplain where their score is “Love it, Like a lot, Like, Meh” I’ve enjoyed that compromise to traditional scores breaking it down to your emotion when playing while still giving a spoiler free summary (Kyle). Keep up the good work, love all the content!

Christian Haines

Hi, Ben and Company! Thanks for all your excellent work for the podcast, streams, and Patreon content - I've enjoyed following you guys over here from Game Informer! The last episode of the podcast was great, but I'll admit to a moment of sadness and awkwardness when Ben described his college experience. Why? Well, I spent 6 years as a graduate student at the University of Minnesota (2006-2012), teaching in the Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature. I don't really have any interest in defending the program, despite the friends and mentors in it. I was mostly just sad to hear that Ben's experience wasn't positive. I will say that most of us (especially those of us who were teaching as graduate students) did our best to bridge the gap between teacher and student, which isn't to say that we always succeeded or that we didn't come off as blowhards on occasion (myself included!). Lots of us tried to bring together difficult theory with literature, film, art, and other aspects of everyday life in an enjoyable manner, but it wasn't always easy. (Not least of all because conditions at the University of Minnesota during and after the recession were not great, with class sizes increasing, tuition rates increasing, and a general lack of support for education from administrators.) In the spirit of positivity, improvement, and community that I think MinnMax is going for, I decided that the best takeaway from Ben's reflections on his college experience was to make sure that I'm making every effort to reach out to students, to craft interesting assignments (I've actually experimented with having students write game design documents based on literary texts, as well as having them play games for classes on a range of subjects), and, generally, to try to be as accessible as possible (or as little like a blowhard, at least). (FYI: I don't teach at Minnesota anymore, but I'm still a teacher at the university level. Penn State, now, for what it's worth.) No need to respond, obviously. A small part of me likes to think that at least the experience writing papers as an undergrad might have contributed to the excellent work you do, today. In any case, maybe a question that could come out of this might be the following: Are there any specific games, genres of games, or other kinds of entertainment/culture about which you've had a difficult time convincing others of the value? Are there any strategies you've devised to bridge that gap? Keep up the great work, and thanks!

Hello Minnies and Maxers, Can you talk through the launch of Stadia, and your initial impressions? I am truly baffled that a company like Google, with so many resources at its disposal, managed to botch the rollout so thoroughly. Do you think they’ll stick with the service in the long term? What can they do to woo back potential customers who were turned off by the poor launch?

Bjorn Watland

For the people who write reviews for games, do you find it difficult to play games for fun?

Sincerly, Eric

What kind of music do you guys listen to/any nonGaming Podcast could you guys recommend?

Sincerly, Eric

Also any early New Years Resolution or thoughts?

Nicholas Marrano

Can you guys please discuss the game awards? There’s a lot there to pick apart.

LaRay M. Hare

What’s up MinnMaxers? This is LaRay (Luh-Ray) from Woodbridge, VA. It seems that large style events like XO19 have become the main way that the console makers are pushing their plans out to the overall Gaming Community. With Sony forgoing E3 (at least in 2019), Nintendo playing a will they/won’t they with E3, it appears that having an event where you control the messaging is important to the console makers. However, E3 is an industry show (attempting to be more consumer friendly) and these shows don’t seem to be. I’m curious what the panel thinks of this development. Are these console maker shows the future for gaming? Do they represent what we can expect as the way to interact with the Console Makers?

Gh0ulface

Hello from Birmingham, AL, Minn Maximizers! My question is who would win? 1 giant Yoshi vs. 1000 tiny Marios I love the show! Keep up the great work.

Nicholas Marrano

In honor of thanksgiving. What are you guys thankful for this year?

Ziyon Gonzalez

Hi guys, Do you think cyberpunk 2077’s open world will be comparable to GTA’s? Or do you think there will be more opportunities, possibilities, and more to interact with. Thanks Ziyon from Fairfield CA
