Hey MnnMs! If you had to choose between only being able to play games that have already been released, or only being able to play games that come out after today, which would you choose?

Shane C

I submitted this question to the GI show once before, and although it went unanswered this feels like maybe the right time for it. Jeffm, in last year's "Favorite Moments of the Year" article (https://www.gameinformer.com/2018/12/24/our-favorite-moments-of-the-year), you mentioned having a fondness for Unravel 2 because it gave you a rare opportunity to enjoy a game alongside your wife, who doesn't play many games herself. I find myself in the exact same boat: my wife doesn't play many video games, but we both really loved making our way through Unravel 2. In the year since, have you and your wife found any other games that recapture that feeling? Shane from Beverly, MA

Muffyn Crumbs

Also, can't believe you guys didn't even have Baby Yoda on your list of best characters of the year!

Travis Layman

Hey Maxonistas! Travis from Las Vegas here. I recently watched Ben Reaves video on game informers youtube channel about why we play video games. For me I think the thing I like the most is being immersed in an interesting world that I want to know more about. Sometimes its just the story and sometimes its gameplay but I think what draws me back time and time again is the worlds that are created. So what is it for you guys? Is it the characters, the story, the worlds, the gameplay mechanics, or the lore etc.? And here's the twist, you can only pick one thing. I can already see you guys saying "a combination of all of them" but you can only pick one. Why do you play video games? What single element draws you back the most? Sending love, Travis.

Dunder

Hey Ben and the CLCs, What’s your most anticipated game of 2020? I’m sure there is no shortage of love for Final Fantasy 7 Remake but are there any other games holding the top spot for you? While few details have been released so far, Halo Infinite is my choice. A Halo game hasn’t launched with a new Xbox console since 2001 and it will have been 5 years since Halo 5 released. I’m really curious to see how 343 shakes things up going into a new generation. Justin in Alexandria, MN

Michael Archer

Oi oi Ben and the Bad Boys, I was recently listening to both your Score of the Year and Game of the Decade podcasts and it had me curious to ask what you guys would pick for your favorite albums of the decade would be. My personal picks are Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stone Age, Undun by The Roots, and Blackstar by David Bowie. Stay fresh, cheese bags.

Joe Zwak

What are your default game settings? Mine are: - difficulty: normal - Invert Y axis: yes - all subtitles: on - motion blur: off - film grain: off - music volume: 50% - Field of view: ~90 degrees (my new favorite setting) Merry Christmas! Joe from Lakeville

Greetings from a fellow nordeaster. I still have an OG Xbox One, and have so far been pretty satisfied with its performance. However, we're starting to see certain games have more significant issues being played on OG systems -- Control being a great example. This has got me wondering about how to handle the release of a game like Cyberpunk 2077, for example. Obviously we can't predict how it will perform at this point, but it will clearly be far inferior to the version that will inevitably be released for the next gen systems. As difficult as it may be, I am considering holding out on buying the game until holiday 2020, when I can play it in the best format possible. Am I crazy?

Hey Ben and the boys, Got a question for you. I've noticed an interesting trend in games journalism recently. There seems to be a lot of praise going toward games that are very unique but not necessarily as "traditionally fun" to the general public. Antithetically, games that might be more wide spread in their general appeal but repeat well known mechanics or tropes are seemingly looked down upon. For example, reviews have straight up called Shenmu 3 boring. And in their review of Death Stranding, Easy Allies straight up said, "the game often prioritizes the mundane over the exciting." Yet for both games, I have repeatedly heard journalists praise the originality of these games and how journalists are grateful they exist. Conversely, I think about how much Borderlands 3 was deemed as rather ho-hum by journalists because it was "just more Borderlands." I'm not saying anything about which game is better or something dumb like one or the other shouldn't exist. Obviously, if you like the game, enjoy it! Regardless of what any reviewer might say. What I'm curious about is how you all view your responsibility as journalists. How much of your job is to praise art that exists and should be elevated ("Hey look at this unique thing! It deserves attention!") versus informing consumers ("This game is worth your time and money because you'll have fun.")? Obviously, your job involves both. But do you ever find those two things in conflict? And if so, how do you handle it? Anyway, you guys are awesome. Thank you for all the content you create. You all are the best. ~Brady Easter Edmond, OK

Hey Mo Bamba and the Bo mambas. I've been thinking a lot about the outer wilds recently with goty discussions and I keep being amazed how that whole game revolves around one puzzle (hopefully Kyle had finished it now) and it got me thinking. What is the greatest puzzle of all time, and what makes a great puzzle. Is it the slow growth of knowledge untill solving it seems natural like the witness & the outer wilds, that AHA moment where you feel like a genius like in portal, or the sense of surprise from games like baba is you and braid?

Machine Gun Keeley

Hey Ben and crew, If you could have a month off for Holiday Break like when you were a kid — what would you do? What games would you play?

T1M3C0P

Hey Minnies. What fighting game character do you think you could actually beat in a real life fist fight? You can't pick Dr. Bosconovitch from Tekken 3. Beating up an old man is not cool.

Leafeonn (Josh K)

Hello Nurse, This idea dawned on me last night, so I brought the topic up in the Overblood group and it made me think about it more. Would the FFVII Remake utilize Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus at all? Maybe that's why each release will be so long? I personally would love a Crisis Core remake and people have been asking it for years. Would you guys want a separate Crisis Core remake, or for it to be incorporated with VII? -Josh from Long Island

Mark Garcia

Greetings Winn Waxers, So many gaming sites are doing top 10 games of the decade lists. Rather than having you rank the top games of the decade, I would be interested to know what you each consider to be the the best game mechanics that were developed/introduced between 2010 - 2019.

MyNameIsDan

Hey Max Stats, Have a board/card game recommendation for you. You should try the card game Love Letter. It's the best bang for your buck game that is easy to play, but allows for strategic plays like a TCG. There are only 16 cards in the game. The abilities of each card are simple, but it is up to you to use them to your advantage and outsmart other players. Here is the BGG link for it: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/129622/love-letter. Thanks, Dan from Fitchburg, MA

Hi Gang! I have spent a good chunk of this year catching up on Assassin's Creed games after falling off with Black Flag ages ago. I finally started Origins last week and it has consumed me. I've already spent 40 hours in its captivating world and will likely spend at least 40 more, but I do already have an inkling of regret for all the time I'm spending on this one game when my backlog is so massive. Do any of you ever feel guilty for playing a single game for too long? Thanks, Chris from Chandler Arizona

Donnie

Hey guys! 3 things real quick. 1. Fallout 76 Subscription model should’ve been a contender for Dumbest Thing. 2. I’ve been enjoying Mandalorian without feeling too invested, but if he reveals his face to anyone but that baby for the first time I’ll be pissed. 3. I was glad to hear you mentioned Dunkey a couple of times. What other gamer you tubers do you like and why? I love Dunkey’s goofiness but also his passion when sharing his opinions.

ConorJTobin

Hey Mignnons, I know you've excellent taste in games, but at the risk of igniting an all-out platform war, how do you decide what to play on? Is there an obvious superior choice, like the longevity of a digital purchase passing from one PC to the next? That said, certain terrible ports do spring to mind... Do other factors come into play, like timed exclusivity, or the last-minute announcement of an expected port? What about remastered classics? Would you rather experience Shadow of the Colossus, say, on the PlayStation 2, as was originally intended? Or do you consider modern upgrades close enough, even if they unconvincingly smooth out the initial experience? Really loving the 'cast - it's a definite cut (ha!) above the rest! Conor, Ireland.

Howdy Ho There! Recently, my friend had a fun idea for a collaborative playlist on Spotify. Every 2 weeks, about five of our friends add 3-4 songs that we're really into at the time. This is to help us diversify our song listening because we've all definitely gotten into ruts with the type of songs we listen to. Anyways, the last couple of songs that I've shown to my buddies have been pretty old (I'm talkin' like made in the earlier 2010's). I feel like I'm somehow stuck in an earlier era of music! So has there been anything you've been kinda late to the party to or anything that you enjoy more that seems like they're from a by-gone era? Cheers to you guys gettin outta that basement soon!

Paul Poff

Hey Minn Crew, Paul from the Max Crew here. Tim Turi...where he at...have him talk all that RE3 gossip.

Kane Dietzel

What's your favorite racing game from the past decade? Mine might be surprising, it's Split/Second. I loved the racing combined with the destructible environments that allowed you to alter the course, as well as obliterate the competition.

Jeremy McPhail

Heyyo Minnmaxers! Definitely at the top end of the console experience. PS4 pro with an SSD, but been thinking about moving back into the PC world. Can you guys discuss or post somewhere the specs you have for your own gaming experiences on PC? Thoughts on Minn-imum specs, Max-imum specs, etc. (Get it?) PS - Will you guys ever have Leo Vader on? I miss the banter between him and Hanson. Used to crack me up weekly.

Beau Bakken

Greetings Minnmax, I challenge you to participate in something I've been doing around the house here lately. Sing some Christmas tunes in our favorite videogame language; Simlish!( a.k.a. gibberish). And if you wanna make a game out of it, see how long you can go before singing an actual English word. It's harder than you think. And no, Suriel can't cheat by singing Christmas songs in Spanish. Smagrut Parnoo! (let's assume that's Merry Christmas in Simlish)

Chance

Hey minnies(?). My question starts with the first fable game. In the beginning when your still a kid. There’s a mission where you guard some boxes. Then some little weird kid comes and pressures you into breaking them. He ends his argument with, and I quote, “Unless ya scared, unless your a Blubbin’ Girl”. We’ve always found that line funny in my house hold, so my brothers and I have been quoting it for years. But listening Game Informer back in the day, I noticed that instead of “blubbin’ Girl” you guys were saying “lemon”!!!. Is this some weird regional thing(I’m in Canada)? And are any more weird regional changes like this that you know of?

Mark Ramirez

What was your favorite announcement/reveal from the Game Awards? (Besides the Xbox) I had no idea Wolf Among Us was coming and am very excited! - Mark from Santa Clara

Jake Z

What was your favorite game that you played this year that didn't release this year? I finally got around to finishing The Witcher 3 after putting it down years ago 20 hours in and it was fantastic. Thanks, love the show!

Keaton

Question mostly for Suriel, but would love to hear thoughts from the others if they have any. Have you been following the info being released for Guilty Gear Strive? There has been some criticism from the fgc about how they are purposefully trying to simplify the gameplay. Do you think this is the right approach to help grow the fighting game fanbase? What are your ideas on how developers can reach a larger audience?

RickyWinterborn

I recently got a gaming pc with a 144hz monitor, and the master race FPS snob life is real. Some friends and I were arguing about which platform to get Risk of Rain 2 on, and i eventually lost to PS4 (over pc) and the 30 FPS and muddy visuals are killing it for me. Are any of you annoyed by low FPS/bad optimization?

Adam_CW

Hey Max-a-millminn Pegasi, I’ll be saving this podcast to listen to while on a plane next week traveling to wonderful Japan! Staying in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, are there any cool places you guys would recommend I visit while I’m there? Thanks!

william hittle

I liked when you revisited your past top 10 lists; it showed just how arbitrary some decisions can be, even though an outsider might look on that kind of information as definitive. It also reflected how your own opinions and feelings change over time, especially when you're not crunched trying to meet a deadline. Are there any games from this year that you think could change drastically with the benefit of a year of hindsight? How many games from 2019 are there that you still haven't had enough time to play?

Thomas Hoster

Hey MinnMax with Star Wars Rise of Skywalker coming out this week I was wondering how you all preferred to see movies in theaters. Usually my significant other and I just go to the local AMC and watch a movie in one of the standard theaters. Due to ticket shortages we are seeing Star Wars in the Dolby cinema theater at our amc. Also if any of you are into PCVR definitley look at boneworks. Just wrapped the campaign and it was amazing. Physics and interaction were revolutionary.

Devin Rardin

Heyyy. I have a really strange icebreaker question. I'm sorry if it's too stupid but it may be fun. Here it goes: If you could shoot anything out of your belly button what would it be? Be as creative as you want. I promise I'll have a serious question next time.

LaRay M. Hare

Hey MinnMax. LaRay (Luh-Ray) aka BluMayham from the Discord. First, I wanted to thank Flaming Queso for asking my questions these past two weeks, and MinnFaqs for answering them. I have a new question for this week’s MinnMax show: With the Great Goaty Hunt under way, and the MinnMax community being reflective about games, what games have changed the way you look at a genre or gaming as a whole? For me a great Gaming Changer, was Ape Escape on the PS1. Using both analog sticks was a real eye opener. I think it’s the first game to use analog sticks as the main form of interaction. Thoughts?

PDxFresh

Hey all, do you think we'll see a dedicated push-to-talk button on the X Series or PS5 controllers? What other controller changes do you foresee or hope for on the next generation?

James Cooper

Hello Ben and friends With Christmas so close, what are some traditions you do every year? I like to take my motorbike out for a ride on the quiet roads after presents and food with family

Mike Vogt

Which character has the better backstory? -The guy who paints all the climbable ledges white in Uncharted. -The guy who makes sure all the barriers are exactly waist-high in Gears of War. -The guy who makes sure each random box of ammo contains exactly the right amount in Resident Evil.

Hans Kleinenberg

What did you ask Santa for Christmas this year?

Luke Strain

Howdy MinnMax! As a military man(n), I frequently recieve professional development reading lists from senior leaders. It got me thinking, what is your professional development video game list? Which games have the capacity to teach about leadership? Or games journalism? Or even video producing? The Banner Saga trilogy stands out to me as a lesson on leadership. There are many challenging decisions with no clear answer that have measurable impact on your people. Not only that, but different caravans respond well to different types of decisions, teaching the importance of knowing your people.

Steven Toth

GAME! I love seeing what percent of people get achievements I get as a barometer to how difficult something was. I’m often shocked. Using price-is-right rules, who can come closest is guessing the percent of people that finished these 2019 games. This is based off the percent that got whatever achievement is associated with beating the game. Resident evil 2 (both a and b campaigns)- 21.67% Outer Worlds (complete game on any difficulty)- 13.40% Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (complete single player campaign on any difficulty)- 31.86% Gears 5 (complete campaign)- 15.19% Jedi fallen order (complete the story)- 34.98% Borderlands 3- 34.00% Thanks and byyyyyyeeeee

King Promethus

Howdy M&Ms, Does anyone at MinnMax play or know DND? MinnMax one shot DND stream in the future? Have a good one!

Nejin

Hey guys, with all the negativity surrounding micro transactions in the industry are there any that you have made that you think were totally worth it?

Jake Wilson

Hey MinnMax Crew, After hearing Ben mention Pete Holmes a couple of times, I’m guessing one or more of you may listen to his podcasts You Made It Weird. (If not, it is pretty amazing, I’ve never missed one!) I would like to ask a questions Pete asks his guests! (Don’t worry, it’s not, “What do you think happens when we die?”) I would like to hear about one of the times you’ve laughed the hardest. Where were you, who were you with, what was happening? Love everything you guys are doing! Thanks for being the coolest!

Colin Perkins

Since it's Star Wars week, here's a couple fun ones to discuss: 1) What game/franchise do you wish was more like Star Wars? 2) What game/franchise do you think Star Wars could learn from?

Rushdan Majumder

Hey everyone, I just became a patron to you guys because I enjoy the work you do! My question is how do you manage playing games? I get home around 6 and after the gym its already 7. Then dinner and then a few hours until I have to go to bed. I have so many unfinished games between RE2 Remake, Yakuza Kiwami, BotW, Three Houses, Pokemon Shield, and The Outer Worlds all of which I am playing a bit when I can.

MJ

Hello God's Country 😊 Best non-2019 game you played this year? Any 2019 games you especially look forward to playing more in 2020?

RickyWinterborn

So new Star Wars apparently sucks, do you think since disney bought Star Wars have they helped or hurt the franchise overall? I’ve lost almost all enthusiasm for them, the new films have been a mess IMO.

Adam Srayi

The hype around the FF7 remake confuses me. Even when it comes to my favorite games and studios, I'd still rather they make new games or sequels than remake something I already played. I know the FF7 remake will be very different then the original, but it definitely feels a massive ball and chain on a studio that already has trouble putting out new games at a reasonable pace. So why are Final Fantasy fans not bummed out about this.

VictoryNub

Hey Ben, I listened to your commentary tracks for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, and while I don't necessarily share your enthusiasm for the movies, I enjoyed the commentary all the same. Is there any chance you and the crew can tackle the MCU now that the Infinity Saga has ostensibly wrapped up? I know cutting commentary for 22 films is a much bigger task than 2, but your opinions are fun to hear nonetheless.

j03n1nj4

There is a lot of talk about whether Disney should pull the Star Wars right from EA and give them to someone else. Personally I think they should pull the exclusivity rights and instead license it out to various developers & publishers. This way, we can still get more games like Battlefront & Fallen Order as well as open up the potential for more quality and more varied games. If this were to happen, what type of Star Wars game would you like to see and who would you want to develop it? Thanks!

Dominic Paganelli

Everyone has examples of the best written stories in games, or the best written characters. Some people will even go so far as to say that video game writing is beginning to surpass movies, yet games still seem so far behind in being able to write convincing romance arcs that don't feel awkward and diminishing of the overall story. What do you feel needs to be changed to fix this? Personally for me the romances in games feel like you're just filling an exp bar by giving gifts or hitting conversation options instead of actually getting to know characters. I also think it would be a bold choice if a game let you work on a romance with another person only to have that character just be not that into you. Thanks!
