What’s up MinnMaxers? At the end of this year we begin the next generation of the console war. What does Xbox need to do to overtake that PlayStation? I think we can all agree that the PS first party are the superior but, does the recent studios Xbox purchased have a chance to bring it back? Is gamepass alone enough to bring people to the Xbox? Or do you think that PlayStation has something up their sleeves that will once again put them ahead?

Jared Barzee

Hi fellas! With so many promising releases coming out this year, particularly with the loaded Spring lineup, I wanted to ask you what game you're most worried about and why. Conversely, if you had to pick just one, which game are you most confident in? Keep up the great work! - Jared B.

The_Smak

Hey there MaxiMillions, if you had to describe your favorite game to someone using only hand signals and mouth noises (no words) how would you do it? Points for creativity.

Jordan (KillerTofu) Johnson

Help me decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing: I was excited for The Outer Worlds, I've played a handful of Obsidian games but not a die hard fan by any means. Unfortunately, by the time I got to Hephaestus I bounced off pretty hard. Not for any one particular reason, it's a good game, I was just done. Normally, I'd have some sort of buyer's guilt pull me through to the end, but between the MinnMax Deepest Dive to tell me about the rest of the game, and the fact that I played it through Xbox Game Pass, I had seemingly no reason to force myself through as I usually might. So, I didn't taint what was a great game in my mind by playing past the point I felt done, but I feel like I may have cheated they system/developer/myself in some way. What say ye!?

Mark Ramirez

Did any of you check out Where The Water Tastes Like Wine? It hit the switch Eshop a month ago and I thought I’d check it out, and it’s pretty good! Elise have it a 9/10 back at GI when it released early 2018 for PC, but wanted to know if any of you have thoughts about it! - Mark from Santa Clara

Sup my dudes. I've got a scenario that I'd love to hear your answers to. You are a game director and you get to make your dream game. We're talking about getting using any franchise, creative/dev team, on any platform you want. The only catch is you have to make another game before that to fund your dream game. Your first game can also be anything you want, but the less money you make with it, the less money you have to spend on your dream game. What would the two games you create be and why?

RickyWinterborn

Did any of ya’ll get into reading through video games? I hated reading books when I was little and never finished a legit one until I had played Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy 7. They each contained a book’s worth of text and I legitimately think it helped me get over the intimidation of reading novels.

Lewis K

Be honest, how hard did you cry getting that thank you letter from the hospital? Also, over the break I restarted a new game plus in the Witcher 3 inspired by the tv show - my last save was from July 2016, wild to think back on it not feels so recently. Have any of you been digging through the backlog over the break? Good to have you back!

The Jacques

Wadup manmixers, Each year's Game of the Year this last decade has featured some form of combat in it's mechanics. Can you argue for would-be 'Game of the Year' winning games that did not feature combat in the game mechanics? Jack, from Pretoria, South Africa :)

Rushdan Majumder

For some reason Breath of the Wild does not stick with me. I've restarted it multiple times after long lapses in play time and yet I just feel alone while playing it. I know its an amazing game and I can see that but I can't help but feel having a companion with me on the adventure would've made it a lot better at least for me. Is this wrong for me to not finish the game?

BloodyMoses

Hello to the MinnMax elder gods, Where is your HYPE for the new Lego Star Wars game? Me and my family play them all and are very excited for the new one. Are any of you big Lego fans, games or real sets?

Bdun912

You win an all expenses paid three week trip to anywhere in the world and you leave tomorrow. Where do you go? Who do you take? What would you do?

Mike Lynch

Heya Ben,Jeff,Kyle, and Suriel. What was the one console you were most let down by? You can include handheld systems as well .

Nick from Atlanta

Hey MinnMax! I was thinking about death this week. Sorry, not the most cheery subject for a podcast! I thought about the music that evokes bittersweet emotions, and I wondered: if you made a playlist for your funeral, what music, video game or not, might you have on there to help your loved ones deal with your passing? Would it be sad to fit the mood, or would you add something to make people laugh? I think of Stickerbrush Symphony from Donkey Kong Country 2. There's something so beautifully tragic about the song, but it's also not necessarily sad. I'd hope that it would help people remember their fond memories of me. Thanks as always, Nick from Atlanta

Hey guys, with the leaked specs of the next gen consoles, whose strategy do you think is better? Microsoft's with its cheap and expensive model options or Sony and its single model? I don't see many early adopters buying the Series S with its low power and the X may be out of most console consumers price range. The PS5 sounds like it's in the Goldilocks zone. What do you think?

Devin Rardin

Heyyy! I was thinking about the difference between video game journalism and what is traditionaly taught in school. In college we are told to always have first hand sources and to avoid your own opinions. It seems that video game journalism( talking specificaly to written news pieces) has a lot of aggregated sources and often the author's opinion is included, or atleast opinionated words. What are the biggest differences between video game journalism and what is traditionally taught in journalism school, specifically when it comes to news writing? Do you think video game journalism would be improved or worsened if video game sites adopted a more traditional style on news writing( much like The Washington Post's Launcher)? Thanks for the weekly podcast! It always brightens up my day!

Hey MAX STATS, Wasn't the best moment of 2019 the "worthy cap" scene from Endgame? I still think about it and even go back to watch this scene specifically. I smile every time. Thanks, Dan from Fitchburg, MA

Shakenbake67

Hi MinnMaxers, with the announcement of Dan Ryckert leaving Giant Bomb and the game industry. What is your favorite memory of knowing/working with Dan Ryckert? Personally for me, it was the Super Replay or Ninja Gaiden where he was trolling Jeff M. Literally made me die laughing and I’m surprised Jeff didn’t just punch him on air. Dan Ryckert was one of my favorite gaming personalities and he brought me into the GI(now MinnMax) and Giant Bomb fan base and he will be missed because there is no way in hell I’m listening to any wrestling podcasts(sorry Dan!)

Jeff Mullen

Hey minn max crew, I have a question for you guys, do you think the new UFC game will get released on the Nintendo Switch? I loved the last 3 and would love to play that game on the go. Thanks Jeff from Cleveland Ohio

R0CK3T5YNT5T

Hey Mink Furries, What would you say if I told you Ubisoft announced a new Splinter Cell game? What would you like from this franchise, what do you think the next step is? Is it an open world like Wildlands when moving around the map but when you enter a mission, it goes back to old school stealth? Implement a kind of light RPG system and add some loot? Or would deniable ops come back? I personally loved Conviction and Black List and would LOVE a new take on a Splinter Cell. I love what you are doing with the podcast and videos. Shed a couple of tears at the card..amazing work and keep it up. Lots of love from the Great White North (Canada) Keith aka R0CK3T5YNT5T from the 6ix

How many coins did you toss to your Witcher?

Toss a e shop coin in your switcher, o gameplay hours a plenty...

What's the most fun you've ever had with a BAD game?

RickyWinterborn

i just finished the modern warfare campaign, the news has been eerily similar to the events in the game. I’m totally confused as to how I feel about playing it. At times its fun, then shocking, then somewhat thought provoking, but then ends and quickly switches back to badass ass kickers mode. Did/do any of you feel guilty/conflicted about playing call of duty? Did modern warfare do anything to ease the glorification of war and pose serious questions? Or was it just a smooth marketing approach for this years installment?

To my dearest MinnMax,     At the time of their births unto this world I was unable to play Halo 4 or Halo 5.  However, with Halo Infinite on the way and the glorious emergence of GamePass I have since been able to rectify this lapse.     It is with great respect and inquisitiveness that I ask of you, why does Halo 5 get so much hate?  While I do think the plot of Halo 5 is overall, meh, I posit that in every other aspect it was a far superior game to Halo 4.     Halo 4 dealt with the breakdown of Cortana as an AI, which I think is a great topic, especially since we've heard for so long how AIs have a short lifetime.  However, the actual process of storytelling was dull and boring. Honestly, that was how I felt about the game as a whole. The music and environments were uninspired and forgettable and the gameplay felt like a boring slog.  I almost gave up and stopped playing, instead, I persevered and finished the game. I was so happy when I did, so I didn't have to continue playing it.     Going into Halo 5 I was worried about what I’d find.  I had heard so much negativity about the campaign and coming off of 4 I was worried about what I was getting into.  The only reason I had hope was that it was a newer game and it was made for Xbox One. What I found was a significantly improved game.  Graphics aside, the music was much more engaging and enjoyable in Halo 5. The gameplay was tighter and felt more alive and varied. The environments were much more fun to explore and the way they used the environments with the enemies, such as the verticality and the nooks and crannies, made it feel more alive and exciting.  More importantly, I thought the storytelling was vastly improved over Halo 5. You may not care for the general plot, what they did with Cortana, or having to play as Lock, but the flow of the story and how they went about telling and showing you the story was way better than in Halo 4.       I kind of like that they turned Cortana into an enemy of sorts.  While it may not be the exact outcome humanity was worried about it comes to aging AI, I feel like it is in line with their fears.   I also wouldn't be surprised if she somehow gets a redemption story and because of all she's been through her lifespan has been extended and/or she doesn't have an expiration date anymore.     I feel better now that I’ve got all that off my chest (bracing for incoming hate).  With that out of the way, what do you want to see out of Halo Infinite?

Hello MinnMax team, I hope y'all had a nice and relaxing holidays. My question for this week is regarding the next generation consoles. As Microsoft seems to be adopting the "iPhone" naming scheme are we to expect new iterations of the console on an annual basis? If so, have we lost the meaning of "next-gen", and is that even a bad thing? The way I look at it is Sony and Microsoft are moving towards having PCs with a custom OS on it so there is no real reason to have "generations" as we know it. Just have a new console release every year or two that runs games more smoothly. On the other hand Nintendo seems to be consistently innovating and experimenting with different ideas. This is where I'm stumped, is it just Nintendo where we are going to see risk-taking? Or am I being narrow-minded by not considering the Xbox Elite 2/PS back-paddles innovation? I am just worried consoles are losing their diversity and distinctness. What are your take's on this?

Thomas Deranek

Hwllo to Kyle, JeffM, Suriel, and their friend! My name is Thomas Deranek, and I'm from Kansas City, MO. My question relates to your hometown and the namesake of the podcast. My wife and I are thinking of planning a road trip to Minneapolis and I was wondering what you all would recommend as activities for visitors of Minneapolis. I have already ascertained from previous podcast episodes that Crescent Moon Bakery's pizzas and Juicy Lucy burgers are worth trying. Anyone can go on the internet and find what the "top tourist attractions" for a city are, but I was wondering what you all consider the most worth experiencing aspects of your city are as locals who have the time to appreciate the finer points of the city. Thank you all for making this show. It's my favorite podcast, and I'm really looking forward to seeing your new logo!

Hi all, I’m having a hard time with GOTYs. By no means have I finished many of the top contenders, but I have played enough to get a general idea of the games, their quality, and understand why people liked them. My problem? None of them feel GOTY enough. I’m not saying the games are not good or even great. But GOTY? The best game I played all year? I’ve concluded they all fit comfortably at #3; #2 if it’s a cool sunny day. For me, sadly, no one game stands out. When you think about your GOTY list, what are contributing factors to help with your decision? Do you take into account time spent? Emotion? Technical achievement? Are these factors weighted? Or is it just a gut feeling? Also, has there been a year where you considered not even declaring a GOTY? Jason

Justin Chobanian

Hello all, long time listener, first time patron. Apologies if you answered this elsewhere, but do any of you guys have "gamer resolutions" for 2020? Mine is to try and knock out my backlog of games I need to play.

Thomas Hoster

Hey MinnMax. I know Ben you have mentioned following The Easy Allies Podcast, but did you see the recent show of where Kyle talked with his parents about video games as he grew up. So MinnMax what opinions did your parents have about your video game playing as a young kid up to where you are now? Thanks for the ever evolving content!

Kane Dietzel

Hello everyone! What was the first console you ever bought? I was just thinking about this the other day and while my first console was the SNES, my first console I bought with my own money was the Xbox 360 elite. Also, I had broken my hand playing high school basketball, and my mother who had been a nurse for 15 years took 5 days to realize it was broken. So to make up for it she put the Xbox 360 in layaway and when my cast came off I got the console

Interrotta

How do you feel about cyberpunk running on ps4 and xbone? I want to be excited about it, and I am to an extent, but I'm supremely worried for the console versions because I don't have a gaming PC and I'm worried it will be held back on those versions, just because of the scope and breadth of the game.

James Cooper

Hello Ben and friends. I don't have a question just a small request Not sure if it's something you can do but can you please give a shout-out to the Australian Red Cross Bushfire appeal? The fires here are worse then they have ever been and we need all the help we can get. Thanks

Mike Lynch

Heya Ben and crew. In this age of de-aging technology, which actor do you believe would be the least likely to have that tech used on them?

Dominic Cichocki

Hello Minnmaxers, with so many ports coming out this year, wouldn't this be the perfect time to establish what MinnMax thinks of games of the past? It may not be as exciting as covering new games, but I'd love to hear thoughts on titles like Street Fighter V or To the Moon now that they have new versions coming out. Thanks for everything!

CalebMurray

Hello MinnMax Minnisters! With 2020 just kicking off make predictions of what your 2020 GOTY will be btw if your feeling spicey you can say unannounced if you think something unkown can come on and steal the show.

Bruce The Genetic Jackhammer Rando

Hey Minnisters! If Sony made the ultimate power move and bought Nintendo what do you think they would do first? What would you like them to do? How do you think Microsoft would respond?

Hans Kleinenberg

Hiya! So now that all the stardust has settled after The Mandalorian, Fallen Order and Rise of Skywalker, what would you say is your least favorite thing about Star Wars? Mine would have to be The Force. What started with a sixth sense sort of thing with which you can also move stuff with your mind, ended up being something that could be whatever the director/screenwriter wanted it to be. Want to create a doppelganger hologram? Use the Force! Want to fight with someone while being in different places? Use the force! Want to - and this can be a Rise of Skywalker spoiler - move stuff around with your mind even if you're dead? Use the flippin' force! Ugh...

Nognaught

Howdy Ben & the CLCs if you where given the opportunity to create a video game version of the Criterion collection, which 5 games would make it? not only would it allow you to preserve original versions of games in a world of remakes, but each game would include a myriad of behind the scenes information, such as beta footage or even a documentary about the making of the game. Which games will you choose?

Zack

Gearbox Publishing announced their upcoming PS5 game at the VGAs, and for some dumb reason they decided to refer to it as a "looter-slasher" which is probably the stupidest thing I've ever heard. As such I present this petition to formally rename that genre as "sworderlands" in honor of Gearbox's other large loot-based franchise. All those in favor say "aye". Those opposed are not allowed to vote.

Logan Williamson

What are each of the MinnMaxer’s Gamerscore/Platinum count?

Tim Lorow

Let me sell you on a game you already know... -Metroidvania -Sonic type aesthetic -Paper Mario dialog -Mid to low difficulty -Religious themes... it’s Iconoclasts! Finally getting around to this frequent Kyle recommendation and it’s just what I need to break up my slow struggle with Sekiro.

Dylan Northrup

I've seen several games journalists and commentators saying Cyberpunk 2077 is one of their most anticipated games of 2020. While I really enjoy the genre and thought the demo shown last year was compelling, I cannot in good conscience buy the game given CD Projekt Red's very poor labor practices. It's actually a little frustrating to hear the breathless coverage of Cyberpunk 2077 from outlets while ignoring the conditions workers went through to produce the game. What is the view of y'all about the situation? Also, what circumstances around a games development would cause you to avoid playing it, regardless of the quality of the title?

IanTClark

Good day to you all. I live in down state Illinois, but the company I work for has locations all over the world including Minneapolis. I heard this morning the temperature was -4 there so I hope that basement is being kept warm by the robust fire in the background. Now on to my topic. One of my favorite games of the current generation was Techland's Dying Light. I'm really looking forward to this year's sequel. I haven't heard much about Dying Light 2 since the E3 demo. What are your thoughts on the Dying Light franchise? Are any of you excited about it coming out this year?

iNeedScissors67

What's up MinnMaxers. I've been curious, given that you live in the State of Hockey, if any of you are big hockey fans, or Wild fans in particular? I'm a Blues fan, but I travel once a year to St. Paul for a winemakers conference and I've taken in a couple of Wild games. The fans were great and the experience was among the best I've had at NHL rinks.

Matt Landers

Hey MinnMaxers, Last year one of my new year's resolutions was to branch out and try to find some new hobbies. I wound up getting into DnD and Wrestling which has been nice to have other interests so I don't get burnt out on Video Games. If you were to do the same and tried branching out, what are some hobbies and activities that would try?

Aaron Pedersen

Morning MinnMaxers, When visiting family and friends over the holidays, I got a lot of weird looks and light hearted jokes about being in my 30s and still playing video games. It seems like a lot of people still view video games as a waste of time but have no problem binge watching a TV show for 8 hours. I thought games were mainstream media. Are they still a subculture? Is it purely a generational thing? Anyone else encounter this over the holidays?

Brandon Milligan

Hello Minnimum Maxers, Brandon, from Manteno, Illinois here. First time, pretty long time. Recently, I watched a wonderfully convincing video going into detail as to how motion and gyro aiming more closely bridges the gap between analog sticks and mouse controls. In situations where it's done well, I find them to be faster, more accurate and in a lot of situations, more comfortable. (ex. Splatoon 2, Zelda BOTW). Do you guys have any opinions on gyro aiming as a whole? Do you find it to be something that deserves inclusion or more of a gimmick? Love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for making Thursdays my favorite day of the week. Also, I won't link the video related to my question due to obvious reasons, but if anyone is interested, it's by a crazy smart dude that goes by the name of Nerrel on YT.

Mark Letarte

I can't remember if I asked this on the discord or here so please excuse if it is a repeat. Hello Ben and the Min Max crew. I love 18 year old Dewars scotch and dislike IPA's. What adult beverages do you all enjoy and dislike? Thanks, Mark from Rhode Island
