On this week's episode of The MinnMax Show podcast, we'll have myself (Ben Hanson), Jeff Marchiafava, Kyle Hilliard, and Suriel Vazquez talking about all sorts of nonsense... and then the community comes in and makes the show better. Leave a comment below with a piece of feedback, question, or anything else you like and there's a good chance we'll read it on the show!

Hello Comp Lovers! What exactly is "Comic Mishief"? It's always something we've seen forever on game ratings, but what exactly IS it??? Sly Cooper is obviously best defined as just "comic mischief", but why is it a reason to rate something for a specific age?

Jeremy McPhail

Hey Minnmaxers. I like how you guys are doing some content that is not necessarily video game oriented. Got me thinking. What was your favorite experience traveling for videogame content that had nothing to do with the videogame aspect of the trip? Foods, thrill seeking adventure, exploration of a city, etc.

Strange Sloth

What is your favorite chip tune soundtrack from recent or retro games?

Shakenbake67

Hey MinnMaxers, In the latest MinnFAQS, Hanson mentioned how he was thinking of doing Spec Ops The Line as one of the future Deepest Dives. This brought about so many memories of how amazing that game was. Beat it three separate times in a row to get the Platinum Trophy which is something I don’t do often. I was just so engrossed in the world and characters it built and the reason why I loved it so much was partly how caught off guard I was with how good it was. Picked up on a sale and never looked back. So my question is, What is a game that you didn’t even have on your radar, that you ended up loving? PS you should definitely do a deepest dive for Spec Ops, I would replay that in a heartbeat

Hey Guys! I recently played through The Order 1886 for the first time and I've never seen a better example of a game that had so much potential but managed to miss the mark by a mile. What are some other good examples of this?

Hello Maxers. I have a game for you that’s a continuation from last weeks question. It’s essential fantasy draft for video games. Rules: -you each take turns drafting video games. 6 total games drafted. -the score is the medicretic score at the end of the year of the 5 highest scoring games. (You have one to take a risk with, or in case a game is delayed to 2021) -whomever has the highest total of the 5 games, wins. -randomly assign draft order, reversing in round two and so on. (Like fantasy football) Best of luck! -Rob from NY

Hi gentlemen. Not a question, but I just thought I would shed a little light on the Easy Allies Pop-Tart vs. Toaster Strudel thing, since it seems to keep coming up. A few years ago, Kyle Bosman actually explained his logic, which is this: Pop-Tarts, he says, are underrated and actually better than we remember them. Toaster Strudels, on the other hand, are worse than we remember them—they don't cook as evenly or consistently, and they often have a hot mushy exterior and still-frozen spots on the interior. The original intent of the "Pop-Tarts and Toaster Strudels" thing on the Easy Allies Podcast has gotten a bit lost by some of the Allies over the years, but it was originally supposed lean on that counterintuitive premise. Your Pop-Tart is a game that people are sleeping on and is going to be much better than people are expecting. Conversely, your Toaster Strudel is a game with a lot of hype that everyone is assuming will be great, but you have a sneaking feeling that it's actually going to be bad. So it's not supposed to be a simple "good vs. bad" thing, it's more of a "better than people think" and "worse than people think" thing, which perfectly and hilariously reflects everyone's confusion about the whole bit.

Hey MinnEsotans, A short. but important question: The Replacements or Hüsker Dü? (Dark horse candidates also include Soul Asylum, Babes in Toyland, and Curtiss A. The Jayhawks too.) Cheers, Drew

PhillyYeetSteak

Hellooooo Minnmax! You guys have mentioned a few times the feeling if being obligated to play the year's biggest games to participate in goty discussions. How would this pressure compare and fit into your lives if it was a game of the season rather than the entire year? I am just talking about the actual game of the year here, not all the more specific awards. Thanks and take care! ✌

Barney

Hi guys, describe an awkward / funny moment with gaming and your significant other and/or family member. I'd been playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 over the holidays and was dreading having to explain the game's dress code for female characters to my wife. Fortunately that didn't happen, but got me thinking there must be some good stories out there to enjoy.

Ben

Much has been made about the "new" Assassin's Creed games but after going back to Unity, I feel like something has been lost. Moving around as Arno feels so much better than Bayek or Kassandra/the other guy. The parkour is much more fluid and interesting and the animations for mounting/mantling/sliding are much more satisfying in Unity. Are there any other games or series where the consensus is that they are "better" now even though such a fundamental aspect of the games are less important and fulfilling?

Logan Williamson

I have never felt more kinship with a person I didn’t know than when Ben quoted a joke from a hidden track on the first Tenacious D record (“I believe in God.”) This feeling was compounded when the rest of the panel clearly didn’t get it, but moved on without acknowledging it. Do the rest of the cohorts have stories where a joke or reference of theirs has failed similarly?

Logan Williamson

If you were asked to be on Comedy Bang! Bang! and got to pick any two of the CBB regulars, comedians or characters, who would you choose? Rudi North and Jason HeyNongManzoutkas all day. Shoutout to PFT though.

Recently with Escape from Tarkov blowing up on twitch (been in early access with a dedicated fan base for 4 years or so) its been a fun game over the years. Very different and very brutal and thankfully to twitch a lot of new players are pouring in. I saw people wondering when it would come to console. I sadly had to inform them it probably never would. This game and many other systems heavy pc games cannot come to console solely for the lack of buttons to be able to map to all of the many interactions. For example tarkov has keybinds controlling checking your magazine by physically pulling it out on top of needing to manage an inventory on the fly that has containers that care about item orientation similar to a resident evil storage space. What do you all think about in the new gen more support for keyboard and mouse to bring these kind of games over to console? It could also open up genres like point mobas, RTS, and make management games smoother like civ. Also any of of the Minnmax Crew give Tarkov a try or watched some gameplay?

Tim Lorow

I’ve been playing the Outer Wilds lately and after several hours in, I realized there is zero combat in this game. You certainly are in peril constantly but it’s a really refreshing to have a game focused on exploration, puzzles, and mystery. Can you think of any games that would benefit from not having combat? My pick would be Watch Dogs 2. It would benefit from being solely focused on the hacking and gadgets.

Hey Ben and crew! With all of the classic franchises of our childhoods (Star Wars, Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Transformers etc.) becoming more and more divisive with every new installment or iteration, what do you think it would take for something new to come along and capture the hearts of a generation the way the above mentioned franchises did in their golden ages? Something brand new, not based on an existing franchise or classic book series. Lastly, what filmmaker would you like to see launch this hypothetical new scifi property?

Hey guys! I really enjoyed the Minnfaqs call-ins this month and I’m glad you’re deciding to continue it. I’ll be going in on the 20 dollar tier for February but I’m still a little confused about how the calls will work for the 23rd. Is there a stream that you join or is it on discord? Please forgive my obliviousness and keep up the sweet content.

Do the phrases "Its over 9000!" "The balls are inert", or "more like burnt toast" appear anywhere in Dragon Ball Z Kakarot? This is important to my decision to buy it or not

Mason Cowell

Hey ben and gents! My question is simple. Who is your favorite npc? I'm not talking Ellie, or Elizabeth, or Garrus. I'm talking about the randos of the world, the characters who rarely get a second thought. I think my favorite has to be the "your biggest fan" character in the Elder Scrolls Oblivion. I just love killing that little immortal idiot over and over again. Cheers!

RickyWinterborn

After all that dragon ball talk, do ya’ll remember the exact moment you first witnessed Goku go super Saiyan? I was 6 or 7 years old at my friends house who had cable, sitting crossed legged on the floor a few feet from one of those 70’s TVs that are installed in the middle of a huge wooden console, drinking one of those colored barrel drinks from the 90’s. My friend and I were so jazzed up from the moment we reenacted it after for hours in the yard..

What's your favorite software for writing? Do know of any (potentially anonymous) colleagues that use strange/interesting writing set-ups?

FlaminQueso

Dear Cohort and the Computer Lovin’ Benjamins, What was the first musician or band you ever saw live? How was it? Thanks, Queso

Gigglesby

Dearest CLCs, What do you make of the news that Activision Blizzard will be exclusively streaming their e sports on YouTube? How do you think it’ll work out for them? Also someone on last weeks show referred to you as the CTCs; I believe this is a reference to the popular breakfast cereal Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Take that how you wish.

Paul S

I just built my first first gaming PC and so far a general lack of cohesiveness you would get on a console has been hard to get used to. Do you think it would be beneficial to release a version of windows just for gaming. Something visually like Steam Big Picture Mode, or GOG Galaxy, that imports all my games well also. I could imagine installing Microsoft Windows Gaming Edition, and it releasing around the time of the Series X.

The Jacques

Hey Minnmax, With Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding coming to PC soon, wouldn't it be cool if Sony sold a client/emulator hybrid sort of thing to PC players? Something that has a digital store front on which PC players can buy old PlayStation games digitally and play them on PC? Jack from South Africa 👍

Brian Brown

Dear Minnmax crew, With Dragonball Z Kakarot releasing I just remembered that the DragonBall Evolution movie is a thing that exists (sadly). It got me thinking about horrible live action adaptations of animated works and so my question is, does there exist any instance of a live action adaptation being better than it's animated source material? Brian Brown from St. Louis, MO

Bdun912

Random question but...is it weird that Parasite made me think of FFVII in a way? I guess since no one else has played it this question is for Ben if he has seen Parasite

Tim Lorow

My favorite thing is reading the comments here before the podcast. And you can “like” your favorites!

How has the influx of Fire Emblem characters joining Smash Bros. affected Suriel's fan fiction?

OddJackBourne

Hi Minnmax crew, Do any of you have any favorite video game characters who share your first name? I ask because there have been a couple of episodes over the past month or so where you've brought up Watch Dog's protagonist, Aiden, who I share a first name with (well, phonetically at least). It's rare to come across a character named Aiden, so everytime you bring up that Aiden, I think "*gasp* it's like they're talking about me!" and then "oh right, they think he's a crap character". Oh, and I suppose there's also Aiden the ghost thing from Beyond: Two Souls. I haven't played either, but I'd imagine it'd feel a bit surreal. (Or a bit Suriel, if you will)

Michael Moran

What is your favorite smash bros taunt?

MarquettePlays

Hey guys! Have any of you had time to check out Journey To The Savage Planet yet? I checked this game out at PAX West last year and my friend and I both left the demo feeling incredibly down on the experience. However I decided to pick it up nonetheless today and I'm loving it! I'm still early on but the sense of exploration has been very enjoyable. Im curious what your guys takes on the game are Have a good one!

Edgar Vazquez

Since I'm not related to anyone in particular, I was wondering if any of you have family that follow your exploits here on MinnMax or in GI?

Guy Incognito

Not a question, but get a load of this. CNBC taught me why the Duke controller was so large. The PlayStation controller had a circuit board cut in half and stacked inside of it. Xbox wanted the same board but out of loyalty to Sony the manufacturer refused. Bigger board lead to bigger controller.

Patrick H.

Hey did the new Star Wars KOTOR news/rumor get any of you guys excited? I'm pretty hyped since the first game is still one of my favorite video games ever. Would y'all want a remake or a sequel? Do you think the story may get more streamlined since it would likely be tying into the canon?

Mike Vogt

Hello MinnMax! Would you rather: -fight a boss that you can't beat because the designers say so for story reasons or -fight a boss that you can beat, but you lose in the subsequent cutscene?

Kane Dietzel

Hello Jeff M and Crew! What is one genre of game that you surprisingly like? For instance, I'm not into cars at all but I love racing games. Also kind of scatter brained but love simulation strategy games like the Civilization series? Keep up the great work guys!

Cory S

With all the talk about unhealthy labor practices in the game industry, what do you think about having a 'labor certification' similar to Fair Trade. Fair Trades is typically utilized where exploitation is a common problem (ie coffee & chocolate farming, textiles etc) although you rarely see it given to western or more developed labor fields. Companies would simply be transparent to certification to show they engage in healthy labor practices. Do you think this would be attractive to the gaming community? If a few companies (even smaller ones) did it, do you think that would put pressure on the industry as a whole to be more transparent?

Sutton

What’s the longest you’ve gone without playing a video game? Why?

Rushdan Majumder

In the attempt to work on getting better, I've started to write down thoughts and feelings and just general notes. For those of you who are avid note takers: 1. What do you write down and when? 2. Do you have any advice for someone who wants to take more notes for either remembering things or just as an outlet?

Dominic Cichocki

If I challenged MinnMax to cover one game coming to Vita this year, do you think you could do it?

Blake Kibby

Hey Computer-Loving Cohorts and Benn (two Ns!). What is a game you can complete with your eyes closed? I’m always returning to the LucasArts point-and-click games like Day of the Tentacle, the Dig, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. There isn’t any challenge at this point because I’ve played them SO MUCH, but I still enjoy them. Is there a game that you don’t find challenging anymore that you still enjoy?

Brian Paradis

Do you have certain kinds of games that you play at certain times of day? I for example will play turn-based strategy games like Into the Breach or Slay the Spire while I eat breakfast in the morning. Brian, Oro Valley

RickyWinterborn

Can we get a business update on minnmax? Money level, prospecting new studio, mini doc plans? I know its easier said than done, but 1 alternate guest host each week would be fun, maybe just for the community feedback section

Joe McQuoid

Hello Cohorts! Each year, I try to come up with a list of my “games of the not-this-year”—or the best games that I experienced in a given year that were released in past years. For example, my “game of not-2019” was Cuphead. It was originally released for PC and Xbox in 2017 (both of which I own and could have played before its 2018 and 2019 re-releases for Mac and Switch) but I didn’t give it a try until just a couple months ago. What are some of your personal “games of not-2019?”

Pearse

Hey Minnmax, do you all feel "settled in" now that it's been a while since the Patreon launched or does it all still new? From a listener perspective, I think that the show felt comfortable right off the bat seeing as you're all veterans of the podcast scene by now. Side question - if you guys could do an episode of Minnmax in a guest location (anywhere in the world) where would it be? Thanks - Pearse (pronounced Pierce) from Boston,MA

Hey Ben and the CLC! After you mentioned the portion of the Patreon that don’t engage (in regards to the length of the podcast), I decided to weigh in. Firstly, the longer the better. Although I agree with you that interviews may be better off in their own podcast, I really love the long-form nature of the podcast, and I don’t think it would be possible for you to overstay your welcome. Secondly, absolutely clothes stink when you leave them in the cupboard for too long - which is very annoying when you crack out a shirt you haven’t worn in a while only to realise it smells.. mildewy.

Corin Thomson

After IGN gave Celeste a 10/10, the same score awarded to BOTW, it started to make me think - is there anything to be said about the measurable efforts (number of staff, total man hours), finance, impact on the industry and other tangibles outside of the enjoyment one experiences playing a game that should dictate the score of a game. It’s consistently reiterated that reviews are subjective, and only the opinion of the reviewer, but when a game that is in so many ways... “less” than another, do they really deserve the same score? Can you imagine if someone compared Ferrari’s efforts in making the LaFerrari to an incredibly delightful and enjoyable go cart made in the backyard?. They got the same fun out of both cars when test driving them, and disregarding the mountains of research, innovation, money, industry impact, man-hours, capability (and on and on and on) that one (the LaFerrari) took, and they concluded both were worthy of the same score? Hopefully that’s not too apples and oranges of a comparison, but I think the point might still stand, that there might be some relevance to the size and scope of a game, what it achieved and what it took to achieve in its score - a 2d platformer (all be it a very good one) vs a huge, game changing, open world, side-quest containing narrative driven, graphically and artistically beautiful game. (Sorry for the long question).

Paweł Prędki

Hey guys, I've recently played a game called Felix the Reaper. Unfortunately, there is a bug in the game that makes one of the trophies unobtainable. People have been bugging the developers (Kong Orange) on Twitter about it but they claim they are not in control of the patching pipeline and ask people to talk to the publisher (Daedalic) (see source: https://www.trueachievements.com/forum/viewthread.aspx?tid=1140730) Do you have any idea what this could be about? Why would a publisher block a patch? I'm aware you probably have no inside knowledge about this specific case but have you heard of anything similar? Cheers, Paweł

Max Arderius

Hi Ben & the MinnMaxers! I love the “get a load of this” segment. In the previous PodCast, you mentioned the Easter Egg on the Dragon Ball Kokarot game “get a load of that”. So I realized how cool that was and I was wondering how it could be used on the PodCast. So how about if each month the MinnMax community votes for the best one and we call it “Get a load of that”. Great show guys, I also feel now I am an ex Game Informer. I feel we all went through this together! Thank you for sharing my commute to work every day! Max, from Orlando, FL.
