Is there something to be said about the 2D art style being timeless? Why is it so easy to relate to SNES 2D graphics than let's say PS1 graphics? I mean there is an artistic style to those early 3d games, so why dont we look back on those fondly?

Sophie

Will you guys be going to PAX East this year? :O

Chris Lopez

Hey guys, Have you ever made a suggestion or comment during a game preview that the developers acknowledged was a good idea and later put it in the game? Do you know of any stories like this happening? Chris

Tadatoo

What’s your favorite number and why?

Nick DeFeo

Does anyone share their birthday with a specific event or someone famous? I am both blessed and cursed to share my birthday with Bungie Day.

This might be a misinformed question but...Given the temporary removal of Spiderman from the Marvel universe, is there a chance that Spiderman 2 gets cancelled considering it is MARVEL'S Spiderman? If the game has Marvel lore and characters, they can't rightfully release the game if during development, he gets removed again right??

FlaminQueso

Dear Cohort and the Computer Lovin’ Benjamins, What was the first musician or band you ever saw live? How was it? Thanks, Queso

Joe Holaska

What is your cutoff for nostalgia? I was playing DBZ Kakarot and realized that DBZ, which I watched in 7th-8th grade through early high school, is the last thing I’d consider nostalgic for me. Is that rough time period the same cutoff for you guys too, or do you view stuff from college or beyond through a nostalgic lens too?

IanTClark

Hello my fellow Retro game loving cohorts. Back when I was a young lad, there were no shortages of NES games based on a movie or television license. Many of these games were very bad, but they were all that was available at the local rental store, so you played them anyway, and - dog darn it - you were grateful. One of the better games that come to mind for is Willow. This game was based on the 1988 high fantasy movie directed by Ron Howard and staring Warick Davis and Val Kilmer. Capcom developed the game and it was a straight up Legend of Zelda clone. Sadly, I never beat the game because it was too hard and I couldn't afford those 900 call in tip lines. Did any of you play Willow as a kid? JeffM, you're old like me. Surely you at least saw the movie. Are there any other licensed based games you all played as a youth that you're really found of? Keep up the great work and stay warms. I hear more snow is coming.

during the holidays, my good friends and did a thing where, one person leaves, then those remaining in the room have to discuss and decide the best attributes of that person. once deliberations are over, the subject (person that left) tries to guess what the group decided, then the group reveals their answer. what do you think are the best attributes of the min max crew and what do you think they would guess the answer to be? big fan CANAS1AN from Oregon

Dear MinnMaxers and to a lesser extent MaxMinners, Are there any video game peripheral control devices that you look back fondly on, or felt substantially changed the game they were tethered to (hopefully for the better)? I personally think the Guitar Hero guitar is probably the one that stands out the most in my mind as being the best/most integral. The Tony Hawk Ride board probably stands out as perhaps the least essential/biggest waste of resources. Having recently seen the video of Allen Pan using a treadmill to handle the walking input for Death Stranding (and wishing I had a similar rig), this got me to thinking of peripherals of yore. Any who, congrats on the show and well wishes for the new year. Awesome Show, Great Job!

Since the presidential election is now in full swing (god help us), I was wondering: what video game character would make the best president? I was originally going to ask who the best video game president of all time is, but I'm actually not sure there are any good presidents in the history of video games. Duke Nukem? Solidus Snake? John Henry Eden? I guess a stable America with a normal, competent president isn't exactly a rich playground for a video game, but still, that's a bleak list. Anyway, my answer is Captain Anderson from Mass Effect. Love that guy. #Anderson2020

James Smith

Hey Handsome and crew, What do you think about video games being announced as soon as they're approved for production, like movies? I personally enjoy being blown away by huge announcements during press conferences. I'd rather be blown away by a surprising new trailer for my favourite developer's new game than see some announcement in a press release and be half as excited over a period of time twice as long. The movie industry is so boring and I like that our industry is different in that respect.

Somewhat adjacent to the 'retro' theme of this week's show, what older game had the biggest impact on shaping the types of game or genre you enjoy most today? Did Goldeneye on N64 mold you into the multiplayer shooter fan you are now? Or did (topical game alert) Chrono Trigger cause you to fall in love with RPGs for life? I played an exceptional (what some might call 'unhealthy') amount of Team Fortress Classic and Counter-Strike when they came out and, to this day, my favorite type of game is team-based shooters. Curious to hear if any of y'all have similar, direct connections from current favorite to original love.

Minn-Mates, If you want to get the full Australian experience but want to do it on the cheap, I'd recommend picking up the Mad Max game from 2015. It is astounding how well Avalanche made a game that fully captures the Australian landscape and lifestyle. Also (perhaps controversial), I think of the 2 major releases that came out on the same day, I think Mad Max is the better game. Thanks, Zac - Sunshine Coast (about an hour north of Brisbane (pronounced Briz-bin) (Why? I have no idea.))

Tim Conlon

Greetings Two N's-ers! What are some times that the people at the table with you (or other friends) have made you laugh the hardest? My friends are pretty consistently funny, but there are always a few times that stick out when they've reeaally gotten me. Welcome, Ana! Love you!

RickyWinterborn

Do ya’ll listen to the GI show still? What do you think of Andy as a host?

RickyWinterborn

Jason Shrieiers story about how delays just make crunch worse and don’t ease crunch was p interesting. Personally I was seriously bummed when I saw the Cyberpunk delay, but assumed it’s the final polish stage or whatever. But then theres rumors of the delay really just being issues with getting it running on xbox one s? Do you think sometimes a game should just rip the band aid off and ship? Although Warcraft 3: Refunded is a perfect example of when not to do that...

RickyWinterborn

Whats the weirdest game console you’ve owned? I had a turbo graphix 16 with Keith’s courage and dark wing duck. The games were credit card sized and similar material.

David blessman

For your special retro theme: what’s one thing you like or hate people do to make something feel retro? Or is retro just hipster?

David blessman

For the retro theme: retro redux is a great game!

Hola MinnMax Crew, I first wanted to send a quick shout out to BeatenDownBrian and Wes Bates who put me onto you guys back when Episode 0 was out. I’ve been enjoying the podcasts every week and am glad to finally be a patron. Sadly, I only knew of Ben from an episode of the Easy Allies Podcast prior to watching MinnMax but am enjoying what every single one of you bring to this group. Not so much a question, but a comment regarding the PlayStation Screen Share feature you spoke about last week. I never thought I would have bothered using it myself, but funny enough I’ve needed it multiple times to help my father with a few games he got stuck on. Between Horizon Zero Dawn, and God of War (2018), it saved me a lot time trying to “troubleshoot” where he was stuck at over the phone. Just getting him to set it up properly is a chore sure, but it gets the job done. Saludos, Juan Rolón Jr.

What are your guys thoughts on the demise of college humor, dorkly, and the rest of those sites?

PhillyYeetSteak

What is the last couch co op game you finished with someone? No online co op, and you have to have reached the end/credits. (For me it was man of medan)

Bdun912

Last week on the Easy Allies podcast they played Kiss, Marry, Kill with Cloud, Squall and Noctis... Now while you may be tempted to just answer that as the question it made me think about FFXVI and the protagonist (considering the character age discussion, though no one mentioned older bearded noctis) Do you think they would ever go with an older protagonist? Or even Persona with a cast of officer workers? Would that help the narrative? Or would it be the same formula with beards and laugh lines?

RickyWinterborn

Does WC 3 refarted being a stale fart make you afraid that diablo 4 is gonna be a fart?

The_Smak

Hey Minn to the Maxerinos, fellow Minnesotan here, have you ever eaten lutefisk? Also somewhat related, what is the grossest food that someone has ever talked you into trying, because they said it was good?

Hazal Mohammed

Quick question for Suriel. Saw on Twitter that you recommended the Pro Split controller for the Switch, so I bought a pair. And I’ve got to ask if you’re still using them, because those things hurt my hands in handheld mode a lot sooner than the O.G. Joycons. Thanks.

Dan Willey

During a discussion with investors, Nintendo described the Switch as being in "middle of its life cycle." What do you think we can expect from the Switch's mid-life crisis? Metaphorically speaking, what is the Switch's "Harrison Ford earring"?

Taylor Owens

Will Star Citizen release this console generation?

MouseRat

Hello Ben Hanson and the Toaster Strudels. Here's the scenario, you are all at a huge E3 party where every notable game industry person is in attendance. I give each of you one dose of truth serum that you can inject into the butt of one games industry person. You then have time to ask only one question and they will have to tell the complete truth. Who do you inject in the butt and what do you ask them?

Zane Dukes

Tim Schafer once derided the games industry for tolerating white supremacy and sexism. What can we do and the industry do to combat the racist, sexist gamers rise up stereotype?

Corin Thomson

After IGN gave Celeste a 10/10, the same score awarded to BOTW, it started to make me think - is there anything to be said about the measurable efforts (number of staff, total man hours), finance, impact on the industry and other tangibles outside of the enjoyment one experiences playing a game that should dictate the score of a game. It’s consistently reiterated that reviews are subjective, and only the opinion of the reviewer, but when a game that is in so many ways... “less” than another, do they really deserve the same score? Can you imagine if someone compared Ferrari’s efforts in making the LaFerrari to an incredibly delightful and enjoyable go cart made in the backyard?. They got the same fun out of both cars when test driving them, and disregarding the mountains of research, innovation, money, industry impact, man-hours, capability (and on and on and on) that one (the LaFerrari) took, and they concluded both were worthy of the same score? Hopefully that’s not too apples and oranges of a comparison, but I think the point might still stand, that there might be some relevance to the size and scope of a game, what it achieved and what it took to achieve in its score - a 2d platformer (all be it a very good one) vs a huge, game changing, open world, side-quest containing, narrative dense, graphically and artistically beautiful game. (Sorry for the long question).

Heya BennMax, the most recent Final Fantasy 7 trailer brings an old issue to light for me again: where does everyone stand on the Aeris/Aerith thing? [Hold for discussion.] The correct answer is that Aeris sounds good and is a name, Aerith does not and is not. Keep it maximized! —Calvin from scenic Eugene, Oregon

Hey fellas, I have two comments and a question: first, the “mouse game” Kyle was thinking of around ps4 launch is called Tiny Brains. From what I remember, it’s not great. Next, Ben and Suriel are my heroes for bringing up Elite Beat Agents and Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective recently. When Ben started chanting “E! B! A!” before starting “Jumping Jack Flash” on a recent episode I got really excited, and I’ll take any excuse to talk about confirmed #1 good boy Missile the Pomeranian. As for my question, recently I picked Bloodborne back up and am going to be completing it for the first time. The last time I even booted the game up was nearly five years ago, shortly after launch. Have any of you ever gone back to a backlog game years later to finally wrap up an old save file? What derailed you in the first place, and why did you go back? P.S. Jeffum, don’t feel bad, I haven’t finished RDR2 either.

All aboard! Hello Conductor Ben & the MinnMax crew! I love when trains are in my games! They're a unique and dynamic setting with a clear structure that keeps you moving forward and they can turn what is technically a long corridor into a memorable experience. If I see a train in my game I know that the next station will be good times. What are your favourite trains in games?

FlaminQueso

Dear Computer and the Cohort Lovin’ Bens, If you had a Toaster Strudel that was filled with cheese instead of jelly filling, would that technically make it a grilled cheese? Thanks, Your Lord and Savior (apparently?), FlaminQueso

Howdy all, Two part question Part 1) What’s your stance on achievements/trophies? Part 2) those of you who enjoy them what would you think of a “Shadow Achievement” system where as an example when replaying a game’s story mode you’d get the pop up for “Chapter IV complete” or whatever. Personally I like the little ~*ding*~ “you did the thing” pop up, but you only get that rush once when playing a game. Would that be cool to implement a way to get the ding again? Secret Part 3) How ya doing, JeffM? Thanks!

Joshua Caleb

Hey Ben and the CLCs, Do you have any game that you enjoy but you know, objectively is a terrible game? I still have a lot of fondness for Sonic R but I know it's an absolutely terrible game and I unironically love the sappy music.

Thomas Hoster

Hey Minnmax I thought of a game for you guys. What’s the Jump Button? -Defaults on some random games. 1. Grand Theft Auto 4 Xbox 360 B 2. Breath of the Wild - Switch X 3. Halo Combat Evolved - Xbox A 4. Dragon ball Fighterz - PS4 Up on analog/d-pad 5. Skyrim - Xbox one Y Bonus: Arma 3 - PC Trick question, no jump just a step over button

Julian Acosta

Ring Fit Adventure seems pretty popular, but who are the developers? I'd love to get their thoughts on the reception or hear any challenges about making the game. So much passion had to go into creating it, I'd like to see who's it was.

Hello Ben and the Gang, I'm writing in to express my disappointment in not being able to be the first one to break the news on my findings. See, a few days ago, I was reminded of the Pop Tart vs Toaster Strudel debacle while working and decided to take a poll as I was certain there was no way people preferred Pop Tarts over Strudels. To my amazement, however, 5 out of the 6 people I asked chose Pop Tarts. Anxious to prove them wrong, I surveyed their favorite Pop Tart flavors (Chocolate and Strawberry) and, after work, I obtained said Pop Tarts and their flavor equivalent Toaster Strudel. That night I also learned my wife preferred Pop Tarts. I considered divorcing her, but I later learned she had never tasted Toaster Strudels. The next morning, I had each naysayer taste their favorite flavored Pop Tart side by side to the objectively better Toaster Strudel. The result: 100% of them said Toaster Strudels were better. My favorite comment was, “I want to punch myself in the face for ever thinking Pop Tarts were better.” Other findings: most of them had either never had Toaster Strudels or had only had them once before. They thought Pop Tarts were more convenient and the commercials, more alluring. With faith in the world somewhat restored, and the relief that I can remain a married man, I sat down that afternoon, trying to organize my thoughts in an intelligible fashion when I get a notification: MinnSnax Pop Tarts vs Toaster Strudels. My heart breaks as I see V-squeeze summarize all my findings into one entertaining video. There was nothing to do, but to eat another Toaster Strudel, make a Patreon account and complain. Thank you for all the amazing content

Hey Computer-Loving Cohorts and Benn (two Ns!). What is a game you can complete with your eyes closed? I’m always returning to the LucasArts point-and-click games I grew up with, like Day of the Tentacle, the Dig, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. There isn’t any challenge at this point because I’ve played them SO MUCH, but I still enjoy them. Is there a game that you don’t find challenging anymore that you still enjoy?

Shawn Mills

If you could put any character from Chrono Trigger into Smash Brothers who would you put in and what would their moves be?

Tactical Dreamer

Hey everybody! A cashier at a Circle K commented on my MinnMax shirt and I got really excited and asked "You listen to MinnMax too!?" Then he got really quiet for like 30 seconds while I was paying and then said "I've just played too much Final Fantasy to not know what MinMax is is all." I hurriedly tried to explain to him what MinnMax with 2 Ns is while my family tried to usher me out the door, but I'm pretty sure he just thought I was a nut. I tried. The End. Thanks for coming to my ted talk, Chris Bartlett

Hello Ben, Ana, Jeff, and Kyle, I hope everyone is having a wonderful day. If you could have one of the caps from Mario 64 in real life, which one would you choose? Red, Green, or Blue? Loving the content! New segment suggestion "MinnHax". Life hack suggestions by supporters and the MinnMax team for improving quality of life. Thank you all, Adam

Team 17 recently came out with a trailer for a co-op moving game called Moving Out, and I gotta say, it looks like so much fun. What're some of your craziest moving out stories? I had to fight with a crazy landlady once. I'm moving out, and she came down to inspect my apartment for the deposit. She disappears around a corner, I follow her, and I see her trying to break the bathroom sink faucet handle thingy! My guess is she was gonna come back with it and demand I don't deserve my deposit. Here's hoping Team 17 includes this kind of experience in their game! Cheers, AnAttackCorgi

This morning while I was shaving before work I thought how much I'd love to have the ability to just scroll through head and facial hair options like a character creator. Who needs super strength or flight or bullet time...if you could have a mundane video game ability what would it be?

Caleb Weisgerber

Ben and Cohorts. I bumped up to the $5 tier to play along with Chrono Trigger and have been slowly going back through old all the previous MinFAQs. A couple weeks ago you made the statement that "if you are listening to the audio version on the patreon player you are doing it wrong"..... And, you were right. I was doing it wrong. Thank you for explaining what an RSS feed is. What times can you remember when you were completely ignorant in the face of new technology? Or you realized that you were doing something totally ass backwards? Keep up the good work!

Dani “Little Milk” Brook

Ben and the crew. What is a genre of games that you shunned and would never play but now find yourself enjoying? For me it was Rogue-lites and likes. Games like DeadCells and Children of Morta have made the genre accessible and fun for me. What genre have you found yourself playing now?
