Dear Minnesota Maximum, A common recurring feature of the sports podcasts I listen to is drafting, so I think you all should do a draft of your favorite consoles. Basic rules are simple - each person takes one per round, and once a console is taken, no one else can take that console. When you take a console, you get to play any game that was released on that console, including remakes/remasters, but you don't get backwards compatibility / eshop games that were released for prior generations. For example, PS3 and PS4 include the HD Remaster of Final Fantasy X/X-2, but FF IX is only available on the original PlayStation... Hope you have fun! Rock and roll, Dave

Short & sweet, what is the best compliment you have ever received?

Hello MinnMax crew, Somewhere in my childhood, I had misheard the term "fisticuffs" as "fisty cups". It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize I was wrong. What dumb word did you mispronounce for way too long? Note: Dialect doesn't count. Thanks! Jt

Hey there Ben and the Calculator liberating cronies! I have a hypothetical question about improving MinnMax: Say you were to get a lump sum cash injection of $100k, how would you use it to improve the show? Change or just improve your studio? Equipment? Entice guests? Use it to try and expand your audience reach? Purchase exotic foods for minnsnacks? Or just sit on it as a buffer for patreon fluctuations? How would you prioritize your potential investment options? Thanks!

Dbrg13

Hey guys! I’ll keep it simple. What’s the nerdiest thing you’ve ever done? Are you embarrassed by it?

Dear Hanson and the Computer Cohort McLovins, If MinnMax was entered to compete in a Tournament of Champions featuring various Video Games Media outlets, which Cohort would be chosen to represent MinnMax and compete in the following games based on skill. (Let’s assume all Cohorts and extended cohorts are available and excited to compete. Each cohort can compete in more than one game if desired. This tournament is for all the marbles so choose wisely!) 1. Mario Kart 8 2. Call of Duty: MW 3. Super Mario Party (switch) 4. Rocket League 5. Super Smash Bro’s Ultimate Bonus Doubles matches!- Select two Cohorts 1. Smash Bro’s Ultimate 2v2 2. Overcooked 2 If it’s not immediately obvious who is chosen for each game, maybe some future streams are required to determine these! Thanks, The Meltiest of Muensters

FlaminQueso

Cohorts and the Hanson, What is your very best experience renting a game from the likes of blockbuster or even more recently with redbox or GameFly? Likewise, what was your worst game rental experience? Love, Queso

Dear Neb Banson and the computer loving cohorts, Here’s a strange coincidence from a friend of mine that has always weirded me out. Back in high school, I had a friend who told a story of one of his cousin’s who had an uncle from the opposite side of the family (so unrelated to my friend) who had tragically passed away in a house fire a few years previously. That uncle was named Jeff. About a year later, that cousin received a series of phone calls over the span of a few weeks from an unknown number. The caller began to leave messages, and they always said something similar to “Hey, this is your Uncle Jeff. Give me a call back.” This freaked out the cousin because of his uncle who had supposedly passed was now leaving voicemails from beyond the grave, and the cousin seemed to always miss the phone calls resulting in another voicemail from Uncle Jeff. Finally, one day the cousin caught the caller before it went to voicemail, and he answered trying to figure out who was messing with him. Turns out it was another Uncle Jeff, completely unrelated to any of them, that just had the wrong number. Looking back on it now, I don't think I really believe that story, but it's more interesting just to assume it was true! Thanks guys and keep casting great pods! Marty Springfield, IL

Hello Ben and the CLC's, You guys' talking about Tarkov players' map knowledge got me thinking: Last year I happened to play a couple of games with no mini map extensively enough to actually really learn the maps well, the games being Sekiro and Death Stranding. I've never been able to bring myself to turn off a mini map in a game that had one, but feeling like I really had a strong knowledge of the geography of these games made my experiences with them mean a lot more. So my question is: What game's map or geography are you most familiar with? Like you could look at a random screenshot and know EXACTLY where it is. I'll take my answer off the air. J. Walter

Jumping on the game rental bandwagon, What video game did you always pick up at blockbuster and wanna rent, but never did? Mine was conker’s bad fur day, for obvious reasons.

RickyWinterborn

I think Jeff has mentioned renting consoles, what a weird era. Your Dirge of Cerebrus stream reminded me of renting a PS2 with the Bouncer right when it came out, that felt like the ultimate weekend at the time. Anyone rent any weird consoles/hardware growing up?

RickyWinterborn

Funny Hanson spoke so highly of Wisconsin dells, me and some friends made a road trip from Maine to California at the end of highschool, and ended up staying at the Yogi Bear Jellystone campground right at the Dells. We all thought the epicenter of water parks seemed like a sure way to unintentionally ingest some peepee, so we passed. We did eat a fuck ton of fried cheese curds though, ya’ll have that figured out.

It’s time to play...IS. IT. A SANDWICH? This game is simple: below are several food items, and all you have to do is decide as a group if it classifies as a sandwich or not. 1. PB&J on white bread 2. Hamburger 3. Hot pocket 4. Burrito 5. Hot dog 6. Lasagna 7. Pop tart

Hey everyone! Hope your week is going well. (Jeff, I hope yours is going SUPER well.) We had a really good discussion in the discord today and I wanted to see what you all think about it. It's potentially a bit sensitive to you all, so I get it if you'd want to skip this question. However, the current state of GameStop came up--specifically it's corporate policies, how it treats its employees and the declining state of the business itself. I then asked the following question and I'd love to get your thoughts on it too: Which do you choose--DON'T shop at GameStop because you disagree with the company's policies and how they treat their employees, or DO shop at GameStop because you want to support the employees who are just doing their best to earn a paycheck in the middle of a tough working situation? It was also brought up on the discord that it's a similar situation with EA games--DON'T buy EA games because you disagree with the company choices or DO buy EA games to support developers who are just trying to make good games? For what it's worth, I usually go with the "DO buy" option because I feel like I can have more impact on "the little guy" through purchasing than I would on the company through not purchasing. That said, there were really great points brought up on both sides on the discord. Again, thank you for all the content you've created, but especially for the community you've fostered around that content. Y'all are great. Thank you!

Beau Bakken

Hey, Minnesota to the Maximumers! What's the funniest mistake you've made in a game? I've been playing Red Dead 2 lately, and the other night in a story mission John invited me into a saloon. My response was apparently hitting an incorrect button, causing Arthur Morgan to wind up and punch his horse swiftly in the nose. It was worth a chuckle. And p.s., to add to the weird/supernatural conversation from the last couple weeks: My dad's middle name is Allen. My Moms Middle name is Kay. My Father in law's middle name: Allen. My Mother in law's middle name; Kay. Kinda cool right? -Beau Bakken

Hey Everybody, Here's a coincidence for you. After my cousin and I graduated high school we decided to celebrate by staying up for 48 hours straight. The first 24 hours were easy, and we knew they would be, so we planned a bunch of fun stuff for the second half. About 28 hours in we drove to a metro station in LA and took it to Universal Studios for a few hours. We returned to the car exhausted and fried from the summer heat only to find that we had left the headlights on, draining the batter. We called Triple AAA, waited miserably for them to show, and ended up getting a replacement car battery which cost exactly $97.01. We remember this total because at the time I remarked how it was strange that there was a .01. Fast forward through a number of blurred activities and we barely made it to 42 hours. We crashed and woke up in the early afternoon. We then decided to treat ourselves to an expensive, fancy restaurant. After searching around for a while we landed on one where the piano was live and the coca cola was poured over a towel like wine. We order out food, indulge, and receive a bill that comes out to exactly $97.01. My cousin and I stared at the number, completely blow away.

Hey Minnmax crew! With the release of next generation consoles so close, I thought I'd ask this. What is your most memorable console purchasing moment? For me, it has to be when I purchased my very own switch. When the switch was first released and still very scarce, I would walk into my local GameStop once a week, money in hand, and ask if they had any in stock. For about 3 months straight, I would be turned away, until one fateful day, months after the console first hit shelves, I walked into my local GameStop and once again asked if they had any in stock. Very much to my surprise, the person behind the counter said "yes" I was so happy and proud to be able to get my hands on not only my first Nintendo console, but the first console I ever purchased with my own hard earned money, as well as a copy of breath of the wild, the first Zelda game I had ever really played to any respectable length as I was never really a Nintendo kid growing up. Do any of you have similar memories with specific consoles? Thanks for all you do! Gabriel Logue

Has there been a change you've made in your life that was inspired originally by a video game or experience within a video game? I've said it before, but I'm thankful that you mentioned Subnautica back on that other podcast you were doing, because it's become one of my favorite games. In my first playthrough, there was something about building a Cyclops for the first time and gearing it up to go on adventures that really resonated with me. It made me research buying an RV, and this year my wife and I are buying a truck and travel trailer to go on adventures with our kids. And I don't think that ever would have happened without that feeling I got in Subnautica! So, how has a video game made a real life change in you...hopefully for the better :)

RickyWinterborn

What remasters do you think would be better off just staying a memory? I tried out halo reach on PC felt like a wonky GameCube game. Uninstalled it within 30 seconds...

Hi CLCs! Microsoft announced Smart Delivery for the next XBox and people are very excited about it but isn't that basically what Sony did with Cross Buy for PS3/PS4/Vita? I might be misunderstanding what MS is doing but I don't think Smart Delivery will apply to physical games. Is this really such a revolutionary idea or are people forgetting their gaming history, however recent it might be? Cheers, Pawel

Bdun912

For quite some time I considered FFVII one of my favorite games of all time. RPGs were my favorite genre and at that point I hadn’t played a Resident Evil game or any survival horror game for that matter. If I told my younger self that I haven’t even downloaded the FFVII demo and I’m just waiting for the hinted upcoming RE3 demo I wouldn’t have believed it. Have any of you had similar shifts in your gaming interests? What brought on the change?

RickyWinterborn

What do yall think of riots new shooter valorant? It looks like they literally wrote counter strike and overwatch on a white board ven diagram and then wrote valorant in the middle. Why does a company with so many cash/massive fan base land on something so generic?

RickyWinterborn

You guys big into politics? Who you rootin for? Too afraid to divide your audience?

Howdy, Here's a coincidence for ya chumps, I was on my way up my haunted attic to visit the ghost of the person I wronged most in the world... Seriously though, throughout my freshman year of high school I would think about episodes of the Simpsons (captain popular) and for about a month straight whichever episode I thought about would end up airing in syndication that evening. Maybe I subconsciously memorized the order episodes would often air or something, but always thought it was weird. Just like that upside down face demon that's right behind you!

Hey MinnMaxers, If you can have any developer remake or reboot a series who would you choose, and what series would you like them to take on? Thanks for all the hard work!

Hello Minnquacks, I see you drink a lot of carbonated water (which is great btw), but what's your favorite soda? Forget the calories, if you could drink any soda still in circulation what would it be? I'd go for a Mountain Dew Livewire myself, for some reason they remind me of Summer. -Nick L from Indy

Hello, hello! Believe it or not, I've started watching Ben like a week or two before he left GI to create Minnmax! About time I finally support this amazing content! Following the recent success Kickstarter success of Wonderful 101 getting a second chance to by experienced by players on all platforms (except Xbox) this question came to mind: Which forgotten gem of the past would you like to see getting another chance at being republished to a new and bigger audience and why? For me, it would be Demon's Souls. Fromsoftware became huge after Dark Souls so it's lesser known predecessor never really got the chance to shine truly. Not to mention it was released exclusively on PS3 at a time where it was still struggling to find an audience. Other question in the same vein: If you had the chance to resurrect any known cancelled project, which one would would it be and why? Personally it would be Star Wars 1313. To this day I firmly believe that a Star Wars game set in that universe would work very well.

Pearse

Hello Minnmax crew, What book do you think would make a good game or game series? Bonus points for something that isn’t obvious (sci-fi, fantasy, etc.) - Pearse from Boston, MA

Kane Dietzel

Hey gang! With the FF7 Remake demo dropping it got me thinking about the reception of RE2 Remake and GOTY talks. A lot of people on the interwebs felt that because it's a remake it shouldn't be qualified to win the title, but we know better than that right?? Do you think FF7 will receive the same type of reaction when GOTY 2020 rolls around? Also sidenote, people who horde collector's edition pre-orders are monsters. I missed out on both RE3 collectors edition that would've matched my RE2, and that adorable Animal Crossing Switch

Mark Garcia

I hung onto my original Dreamcast because Grandia 2 was one of my favorite games. Once the Switch version was released, I finally gave my Dreamcast to one of my childhood friends. Has there been a game that has caused you to hold onto a retro system long after that system’s prime because without it, there would be no other way for you to play that game? If so, what was game and what was the system?

Drew Waranis

The Replacements or Hüsker Dü?

Hans Kleinenberg

For next gen, what’s a feature you’re really hoping gets implemented that hasn’t been announced or rumoured yet? For me it’d be digital trade in. Trade in your game for coins or points or whatever, after which the game will be removed from your library. The number of coins would get less as the store value of the game gets lower. Coins can be spent on discounts or other bonusses. It’d make buying games digitally a whole lot more attractive for me.

Heya Cohorts, I was just listening to the February MinnFAQs call-in special (a week late, I know) and someone asked about playing a game series out of order changing your view on it, which reminded me of this anecdote I have about Mass Effect 2 (in which I actually end up playing the trilogy in the proper order, but not in a way that was contemporary with the rest of the world's video game enthusiasts) I had just started reading GI magazine a few months prior to the ME2 review coming out, and it was the first time I had ever seen a game get a 10/10, so my dumb young brain thought "this game must be literally perfect, I have to play it!" I asked my mom to get me a copy for my birthday, and when she did I was ecstatic to start it, but after playing the prologue I was completely lost. I remember the review saying that you didn't need to play the first to appreciate the second, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was going to miss a lot if I didn't go back and play the original. So I ordered a used copy of Mass Effect 1 online and had to wait almost a month for it to arrive. When it finally showed up I played it and had an absolute blast. I actually had so much fun with Mass Effect 1 that I ended up playing it through six times before I finally started up Mass Effect 2 again almost a year and a half after it came out (at which point I could've probably gotten it on sale instead of making my mom spend the $60 at release, oops). For the sake of brevity I'll edit down the six paragraph tirade I just typed and summarize it by saying that when I finally played through Mass Effect 2 I was thoroughly disappointed by it. Even though the rest of the world seemed to consider ME1 "archaic" by the time ME2 came out, I still went back and played it after the fact and found it to be the superior experience. I have no question, just wanted to share the anecdote. Also if you could share this with Javy Gwaltney and inform him that Mass Effect 2 is far and away the lowest point of the trilogy, that'd be great. Much love to you all, even Javy

Heeeeello Benny Ben Han and the other dudes. Here is a coincidence for you. I almost never remember my dreams. A week ago, I woke up with the faint memory of dreaming about this dude I used to go to high school with was coming to my work for some reason. I never really hung out with or knew him well, just someone I would see every so often. I check my phone that is plugged in across the room and Facebook was notifying me that it was his birthday. Strangest thing to happen to me in a while.

Welcome back... to another enthralling installment of "Eerie Tales from Erie, Pennsylvania*"! *this tale does not take place in Erie Back in high school I was part of an exchange program for my German class, and when my exchange student Phillip was in town I thought it would be a fun idea to go to Valley Scare for something to do on the weekend. The group I went with consisted of Phillip, my brother, my brother's girlfriend, and one other friend, Nick. Nick was the type of person that has the habit of making stuff up to seem cool or interesting, and he especially loved scary Halloween stories. Anyway, I live about an hour away from the park, and just before we arrived, Phillip realized that he had forgotten his insulin back at my house (he has type 1 diabetes). It was too late to turn around for it and still make it to Valley Scare on time, but he assured us that it wouldn't be a problem as long as he didn't eat anything at the park that might cause his blood sugar to spike, so we decided to just keep going. When we got to the park we were in a massive crowd of people waiting to buy tickets, and some random girl dressed as a skeleton walked straight up to Phillip and said "yo, I have diabetes, too" before promptly disappearing into the crowd. I was flabbergasted! How could she have possibly known Phillip had diabetes? We had stopped talking about it 5 minutes before we got to the park, so it's not like she overheard us, and it's not like she saw some sort of diabetes related paraphernalia sticking out of his pocket or something, because he had left it all at my house. To make matters worse, somehow Nick and I were the only ones that saw it happen (even though she walked right up in front of Phillip's face), so no one else believed us. They assumed Nick was trying to make up something spooky to scare them and that he had roped me into it.

Greg Varney

Hey Ben and the MinnMates, what kind of narrative to gameplay disconnects do you find the most annoying in games? It really bugs me in games like AC4, Odyssey or Mafia 3 where the narrative is about you amassing and commanding a large group of cool fighting dudes but the gameplay still has you attacking each objective as a lone wolf while your 100 buff mates with weapons cheer you on from the sidelines.

Greg Varney

Hey fellas, already posted a question but finally thought of the spoooooky coincidence I wanted to share with you boys. When I was younger, around 5-6, I used to regularly suffer from night terrors where I’d scream things or thrash about while I slept and it was really difficult to wake me up. My parents used to wake me up by sitting me in the bath and asking me questions until I came to. One night they asked me to count to ten for them and, according to them, I responded by counting to ten in perfect German, which really freaked them out because I’d never learned any German . When I’d woken up they asked me if I knew how to count in German and I told them I didn’t and didn’t proceed to learn to for another 2 years. I think it’s entirely fair to say that I was definitely possessed by a German ghost and didn’t somehow learn it subliminally. Love the show!

Hello MinnMax(2 N's)! This is BluMayhem from the Discord. I'm a HS Physics Teacher, so I wanted to reach out about the discussion last week about the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and all other speedsters depicted in movies. There is a portion of Special Relativity called Time Dilation. While I will spare the Panel and God's Country the extreme granular detail that this facet of Physics has, the long and short of it is this: As an item moves closer to the speed of light, the amount of time & the way that time is experienced is elongated. This has been experimentally shown on commercial airplanes on a very small level. (It has also been shown experimentally by muon decay in the atmosphere.) If we are to assume that Sonic is moving at .7c (70% of the speed of light), which is very fast, then one minute (60 seconds) would be around 75 seconds to Sonic. While that does not seem like much, this would give him a massive advantage against any opponent that is moving at a slower non-relativistic speed. This is also in line with a famous Gedanken-Experiment (German for "Thought Experiment) from Albert Einstein, where he rode on a beam of light. Everything appeared to be standing still relative to Dr. Einstein! Also: I wanted to touch briefly on the Rainbow and the fellow MinnMax (2 N's) crew that drove through it, Kyle and Suriel both stated that Rainbows are Optical Illusions. This is incorrect. Rainbows are caused by white light entering and exiting a prism. This causes the light to refract at both edges of this prism, in this case water that is in the air. This refraction causes Dispersion, which breaks the rainbow into the seven colors of the visible spectrum. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, & Violet. (Purple is not a Color! It is perpetuated by Big Crayon. The Physics Police and I have been hurting them for violating the laws of Physics for Years!!!) It is possible the drivers just happened to drive through the water droplets that were making the rainbow.

Michael Archer

Hey CLCs, in the topic of crazy coincidences I apparently have a clone. I was first made aware of this when friends at universities different than mine said they saw me on campus. But as time went on my clone started becoming quite successful. One time I was at a brewery, and the bartender lit up, asked how I was doing and saying "its been so long since I've seen you! You're Michael, right?" I was taken back, completely unsure of who he was, but I played along asking how he was doing. He then told me about his family and how they've been doing and then asked if I was still running an organic farm. That's when I knew the jig was up and we had no clue who each other was. I told him this, and he started laughing in a dumbfounded way, and pulled up a picture of who he thought I was and it turns out they looked nearly identical to myself. I've not heard what my clone is up to these days, but I hope he's doing well. Has this ever happened to you guys?

Michael Moran

Hey Minyu Force, I have a coincidence and two media recommendations based your conversations from last week. Coincidence: My college dining hall would have you write a name for your orders which they would scream out as they placed it on the pickup counter. There were far too many Michaels (most common name for year I was born) so I decided to pick a different name to avoid the ambiguity of hearing “Michael” yelled and not knowing if it was my food. I started using Isaac (big golden sun fan) as my unique name. A week or two later I hear "Isaac!", go up and grab my food and someone else grabs it at the exact same time. He looks at me so excited and says “wow I’ve never met another Isaac before!”. I felt very bad explaining that I was a fraud and watching his excitement fade. Should I have lied to him and kept up the charade? Maybe grab my food with a giant pair of gold floating hands just to prove I was legit? Recommendations if you like Free Solo: I love climbing and documentaries. If you liked Free Solo you will probably enjoy Meru on Amazon Prime, directed and filmed by Jimmy Chin (same director as Free Solo). My favorite climbing documentary is The Dawn Wall, a story about the most difficult route up the same rock formation you saw Alex Honnold climb in Free Solo. Recomendation for JeffM because he likes SF architecture: The Last Black Man in San Francisco was on of my favorite movies last year. It's beautifully shot with many of the shots and plotpoints showcasing San Francisco architecture. It's on Amazon Prime. Fair warning, the movie is light on plot overall, very dialogue and character focused but looks incredible Thanks!

Hello friends. Story time. Yesterday was almost the fabled day. The day I got to play Avalon the beloved game that Ben Hanson never stops talking about. I come home and my room mate has friends over playing board games. They ask me to join and I happily sit down and start eating birthday cake flavored Oreos which I realize I hate now. A few games of spy fall in and I recommend the next game. Avalon. Most agree but we realize the host (my room mate sister owns it but didn’t bring it) so we didn’t get to play it. My question is what Is something your favorite podcast host sold you on trying (Avalon for me) that you had 0 interest in before but were willing to try it because of your love for the host and their taste

Travis Manick

Hi Ben Hanson and the not-Ben-Hansons, Like many, I am excited for Final Fantasy 7 Remake. I've been excited for games before, but I was surprised how much of an emotional reaction I had to the demo. The anticipation beforehand, the excitement from hearing the music, and finally getting to control Cloud made my teary. Is there any game or gaming experience that gave you a much more intense emotional reaction than you anticipated? Manick_T

Joe Juba

Hello JeffM and the rest, Following up on the inexplicable coincidence discussion: Have you ever had a dream that somehow incorporates the things happening around you? Like, you're getting jostled around on a bumpy car ride in your dream, but then you realize that someone has been trying to shake you awake for a full minute? Here's my inexplicable version of that: I've had dreams where the real and unreal worlds are perfectly synced. For example, I might be the dream-captain of a nuclear submarine, and I'm getting ready to press the RED ALERT, INCOMING MISSILE warning button – and the instant I do, my alarm starts ringing in the real world. How can someone's unconscious mind have split-second accuracy (and narrative cohesion) when it comes to knowing exactly when something is happening in the waking world? I know it's about a 1/10 on the EerieScale, but that's my story. Keep up the great work!

GreenMountainState

Hey MinnMax, What's your preferred way to make popcorn? Hot air popper, stove top with oil, microwave bag? We personally go stove top, but I have yet to find an effective way to add butter that isn't just dripping melted butter in the popcorn. Some way to spray butter would be ideal. Butter ideas!?

Thomas Hoster

Hey MinnMax, Ignoring stats of weapons in games what is your favorite category of weapons. Pistols, shotguns, rifles, and sniper rifles etc. I loved control so much solely for how good the pistol felt in the game.

Roberto Zayas

One more question. Hypothetically, I give you all $10M each. You can only use the money to invest in ONE game publisher AND you won't be able to touch the money again for a decade. Who would you choose and why?

betoq92 .

Good morning minnmaxers I have a strange coincidence that happened to me. A few years ago I had a strong urge to visit my dads grave. When I got there my mom and sister were exiting the cemetery. I called and we talked about how weird it was that we both went at the same time. I spent about an hour there and when I got in my car my Uncle and Grandpa pulled up. The date wasn’t meaningful in anyway but we all went and we dont know why.

Milk Bradley

A Milk Bradley howdy from Madison, Wisconsin wittle MinnnnMaxies (4 n's)! What is a game many people love that you just can't make sense of? Context: I often hear people talking about a game that I don't find great as one of their favorite games of all time. That game game is Persona 5. The music and the UI are exceptional and easily stand out well above most other games, but it's when people talk about the characters and the story that I feel so confused. The dialogue isn't as bad as kingdom hearts 3, for instance, but I think all the characters feel one dimensional and repetitive over the whole of the game. I also found the UX in the roleplaying sections to be obtuse and the way that they would kidnap you for hours of click-through story sections to be exhausting. I also played this game entirely while walking on the treadmill so making it to a place I could save was literally exhausting ;) Can you tell me why I'm wrong about Persona 5? What am I missing? Should I give Persona 5 Royal another good go?
