Welcome back, villagers! This Wednesday we're airing the second installment of our community game club on Animal Crossing: New Horizons with friend of the show Ana Diaz, localization expert/streamer Sarah Podzorski, and co-owner of Pink Gorilla Games and co-director of the Video Game History Foundation Kelsey Lewin.

Please leave a comment below and there's a good chance we'll read it on the air during the game club, the more specific your comment is the higher the odds we'll read it. We covered a lot of the basics during the first discussion above, but please let us know how your villagers have grown or changed, what you think of the longevity of the Nook Miles system, or anything else that you think would be fun to discuss. We'll stop collecting comments early on Tuesday morning.

This will be the final installment of our Animal Crossing game club for a while, since we have the exciting game club for Final Fantasy VII Remake coming up on April 15th. However, we do think it will be fun to rekindle this game club down the road to check in on how everybody's islands in Animal Crossing are doing. So stay tuned!

How do you guys feel about Nintendo's handling of having multiple accounts on a Switch being limited to sharing a single island? Only the first player to play on the island is in charge of many of the island's projects, while other accounts on the same switch are limited in their ability to affect the way the island changes.

Listen gang, I know the museum was touched on last episode, but it really can't be praised enough as far as I'm concerned. Specifically I would like to highlight a feature found in the fossil exhibit. There are several areas on the ground marked by a blue circle. Standing in these places shifts the camera to give you a glorious view of the exhibit, and tell the story of dino extinction. Standing on the blue dot near the meteor model even causes it to pulsate. The museum upgrade is really a great analogy for this entry in the series as a whole. The museum has always been a treat, and featured minor improvements each game. But this go round, they went above and beyond what fans even asked for. It's just... *muah*

Justin Chobanian

For the love of God and all that is holy, let me able to craft more than one fish bait at a time.

Jordan Brown

This has to be one of the most wholesome games I've ever played. I've played for about a week and it's hard to just not have a huge smile on your face the whole time you're playing. The individual islander's personalities are cute and fun and surprisingly not grating. One complaint I do have is the very limited amount of mystery islands you can travel too. I've been on about 6 or 7 different trips and have gotten the same island 4 of those times. How do you guys feel about the mystery islands?

Ethan Horn

Alright let’s talk about it: Thomas Nook. Everyone loves making fun of him, declaring him a despot, or hero of the people. But, actually, what do you think about him? I find most people love the jokes but ultimately thumb through the dialogue and treat him as a game mechanic more than anything else. How does everyone feel about Tom, and ultimately what is the ideal arc over the next few AC games for this now iconic Tanooki?

Hey MinnMax! Really loving this game! In response to last weeks episode, you can buy tools when on a random island. Wilbur will sell you tools for miles while you are there, so if you run out and have a lot of miles, don't think you adventure is up yet! Love the addition of nook miles and repeatable objectives. Really focuses the gameplay and give me a concrete objective to work towards. The interactions between villagers is so cool! I have a workout dude on my Island, Axel, who got into an argument with Boomer, who is lazy. Axel got so angry that he stormed off and whenever I talked to him, he said that Boomer needed to lift some more dumbbells to in his brain! Axel also got another one of my villagers, Ellie, to get into working out, and every now and then, I will see them in workout clothes exercising together. I bought a pull up bar to put into my house, and when I spoke with Axel, he wanted to start up a workout club with other villagers on the island. He is I love how the villagers react to events that happen on the island. I got my recipe for medicine when one of my villagers saw me with a stung eye. The design maker is so incredible in this game! I spent so much time making my flag, before I even realized that I could change to different palettes and then tweak the settings of individual colors. The amount of work you can put in to a small 32x32 board and get back something that is not only recognizable, but a good imtiation of the original is great. I like that you can now put designs on other types of clothing, as well as on your face. A few things that i feel they could improve upon. Crafting multiple of something at a time. Don't want to spend all day making fish bait. Pulling from storage for crafting, A sort button, my inventory is all jacked up. Finally an meter to show the durability of tools. Always afraid I'm gonna run out when striking a rock.

I really like how much more there is to do and how relaxed it is about the loop, also I’ve visited spider skull island once and enjoyed how great it felt to turn in 39 beasts and pay off my house loan in a single hour. The only down side is the story I told Hansen, everyone is so nice you feel really bad trying to get an animal to leave, I thought I was going to cry when I bullied my muscle bro with the net, I never expected him to sit down cry, and then it took three times of him complaining about not having friends, and how he came to the island alone, and how mean I was being to him, then finally he would talk to me again, then I apologized and gave him a gift, I can’t remember too many other games that have made me feel empathetic for it’s characters with so little story or build up.

Josh Stevens

This is, without a doubt, the best Animal Crossing game I’ve ever played and honestly will probably go down as one of my favorite games of all time. However, there are a few small issues I have with it. The biggest one is not being able to craft more than one thing at a time. I spent hours trying to catch the elusive Stringfish yesterday and it was a very not fun grind of digging up clams and turning them into bait one by one. (I did finally catch that thing though and that felt amazing!) Overall though, I am able to look past my minor issues with the game and I am absolutely loving it. I’m new to MinnMax but thanks for all that you do, especially these Deepest Dive episodes, which are now one of my favorite things to listen to!

Sincerly, Eric

I can not stress enough how much this game was needed at this time in peoples lives. I'm still going into work at a Factory that is considered to make "life sustaining" material. It is stressful ever day and I'm sure every listened today can understand why I needed a little escape. So after a talk with my Wife we decided to get it. It is indescribable and hard to explain how when I booted it up and started playing, I could feel my self needlessly tensing up while fishing. While catching bugs. Or when chopping trees. As I noticed this I started to relax more and more until I could feel myself slipping into that sweet sweet new Horizon. Small details. That cussing pitter patter of your feet as you go from sand to ground to pier and the differences each time is a sort of nostalgic feeling I can't place. I decided when playing Fire Emblem that I will now judge games based on how much I enjoy thier fishing mechanics. This is a 10/10 from me boss. Did anyone else immediately dislike any of the other Villagers. Billy the Goat asked me if where he had his tent was a good spot. I said yeah dude! Awesome. Rocket asked me the same thing. I, without hesitating said "no let me find a spot." And proceeded to run as far away from my Tent as possible in the early stages of the game. I don't what it is about them. I just dislike Rocket with a passion. Also, has anyone else sat on a bench with a friend and begun to do synchronized side shuffles with your feets poking out? 10/10 suggest to all Best Friends. Love you guys at MinnMax. Ive had a great times Crossing these Animals!

Journal: Quarantine day 14... buying turnips seems like a low risk fun way to have some more fun in a great game I am loving. Quarantine day 15... WHY... WHY... did I buy TURNIPS??!! The horror... the horror. Guess it ain’t cut out for everybody.

Tanner Hoisington

Hey Ben, this is a more general comment about Deepest Dive. On GI I think you had more of a structure you wanted to hit and would pull in relavent questions when the time came— especially when you followed the chronology of the stories. Now it feels like you are jumping around a bit to reach every question. Don't be afraid to miss some! Let your own plan or your guests lead the way. Could always do a Roundup at the end. Just my opinion :)

Tyler Sticka

New Horizons contains a lot of wonderful new changes for the series, but for me the biggest change from New Leaf has nothing to do with the game itself. Having this game on a console as popular as the Switch, with easier screenshot and video sharing built in, at a time when everyone is stuck inside, means the online discourse around it feels incredibly heightened compared to previous entries. Given this flurry of online activity, I think it's a shame that Nintendo decided to gate design sharing behind the opening of the clothing shop. This will take many players weeks to unlock, which feels odd since you can import designs from New Leaf right away via the Switch Online App. Many players online seem to be using black magic to convert designs to New Leaf QR codes, or even manually recreating designs pixel by pixel (good grief!). Is this a sign Nintendo misjudged demand for this feature, or do you think in a few weeks as more players unlock "real" sharing we'll all feel silly for being so impatient?

Chris Kochon

So I'm a real music nerd so please bear with me. When Isabelle shows up you're able to change your island tune. The template you're given to work with contains 4 measures and the notes available to you have no sharps or flats so your song has to be in either C Major or A Minor and all your notes cannot be any faster than a quarter note. With that knowledge I took out my guitar and tried to figure out what songs I know using that criteria. I ended up going with the first 4 measures of the main melody of the world famous tango song Libertango by Astor Piazzola. Did any one of you choose an already existing song for your island tune, and if so, how and what did you choose?

Michael Newman

I haven't necessarily soured on the game at all but I did want to mention a main gripe I have: Why the heck can't furniture be turned 45 degrees? So some items (bamboo noodle slide, monster statue, champion pennant to name a few) are angled items and have to top be displayed at a 45 degree angles but their turn radius is still 90 degrees. This means I can't have these things sitting straight on, but alternatively I can't set anything down at angles within their given item grid. I would love for the ability to kitty corner things in my room and I just don't understand why we are being confined to 4 directions like a bunch of Neanderthals.

Dbrg13

Hey Animal loving cohorts! Has any of your fellow villagers been in an argument yet? It’s happened to me twice. The first time was when Cherry made fun of Bam’s abs. The second was when Lucy asked me to give Pippy a gift in order to make up for their argument. It’s so wholesome and completely has me invested in the feelings of my animal friends.

Jason Kelley

I love that the custom island tune is always a little different depending on who you talk to. I’ve always wanted to hear what the Final Fantasy victory fanfare would sound like on a kazoo pitched down 3 octaves.

Tim Lorow

I’ve been sharing an island with my wife and while she is enjoying the game immensely, there is always am the annoyance that I am always the “Island Representative” so certain story items will only play out for me. Also I sometimes miss out on celebrations as she will often log on first during the day. I have to say I’m a bit disappointed that we essentially have to split the enjoyment of this game instead of having our own islands.

Matthew Wogksch

I have spent most of my time on the Island of Dr. Moreau accumulating creatures for Blathers. While in the museum, I noticed that the exhibits follow their natural activity cycles. Nocturnal creatures are active at night and diurnal creatures are active during the day. Such a cool little feature that perfectly encapsulates Nintendo’s attention to detail! I’m sure this has been done in other Animal Crossing games. However, this is my first time playing an AC game, and I love finding these little details in the game.

Holden Hintz

The best little thing I’ve noticed is the ability to send items you’ve previously purchased through the kiosk to your friends. I visited my best friend’s island and left a bulletin claiming he owed me 50,000 bells, and ever since then I’ve been sending gifts to him that doubles as a threat to pay back his debt. Like a skeleton of the last guy who didn’t repay his debt. Have y’all sent any good gifts to anyone?

Michael Newman

How is it that there isn't a text wrap when typing messages on bulletin boards/sending letters? Seems like a total oversight.

Justin

Great work everyone! The thing that has surprised me the most is the level of customization. This game is making me care about placemats on my kitchen table. I don't even know if my wife and I own placemats in our home...but I sure as heck designed my own in Animal crossing.

Matthew Paxton

While everyone is out earning bells upon bells, I feel like it is my personal mission to get the museum in prime condition. I certainly wasn't expecting the museum to be so sprawling and well-put-together. I now want to make sure the museum lives up to its full potential.

Steve B

It was on my eleventh glory kill I realised I had downloaded the wrong game

Miguel Medjai

Hey thanks for answering my question!! I was gonna ask if you got anyone else convince to play Animal Crossing but I think that is an ongoing story so my question is about your homes. Have you upgraded to different rooms? If so have you made them in specific themes? Like space theme, pirate theme, etc. Or made it to a home so we have bathroom, living room, bedroom. Keep it up you guys.

Juan Cabrera

First time "game club," or any type of "book club" derivative. Checking in every day on my island but I just love telling friends and family I'm participating in a game club, feels so "high society."

Brian Londergan

One aspect of the game I haven't seen talked about too much is amiibo support for the Animal Crossing figure and card sets that came out a few years back. Once you unlock Harv's Island, you are able to scan owned AC amiibo into the game and use them as "models" for fun photos on his island. Not only that, but any amiibo scanned will then receive a unique in-game poster purchasable from Nook Shopping. Having lapsed on Animal Crossing last decade, I don't own any of these amiibo, but I'm really intrigued by the idea of tracking them down to collect these in-game posters. While this game has certainly been a boon in a social distancing America, this minor feature is giving me optimism for the day I can figure hunt across my local stores again like it's 2015!

Nick DeFeo

First time Crosser, bought it after seeing the previous Deepest Dive episode. I'm really surprised how much I am enjoying this game, it really moves those meters for me. I probably can't offer anything super specific as all of this is new to me, but I will say that leaf bug really surprised me, I thought it was a random item on the ground(maybe one I dropped?) and BOOM it's a bug! MUST. CATCH.IT. Also the Kool-Aid at the Froggy Cult is delicious!

Andrew Burnes

First of all, I just want to say, last week's Deepest Dive was fantastic! This cast really knows their stuff and it makes for a wonderful listening experience. I've watched it two-and-a-half times already, often while I play around on my own Island. My big question so far is... where the hell is The Roost?! Hanging out in there with that glorious piano theme and bothering Brewster every day until he's forced to open up to me and be my friend was my favorite thing in Wild World and I was dismayed to discover it wasn't included with the museum when I opened it up. Even after opening the store, there is no sign of it. It's in this thing somewhere, right? ...Right?! Last, I want to provide a story I had yesterday involving tarantulas. I'd been taken out by them at every turn for a week until last night when I exited my newly opened Nook's Cranny. As I prepared to take a nice stroll on the beach, I saw it coming straight for me, no wind-up or nothing. "Holy shit!" I yelled aloud as I ran around a nearby rock until I got enough distance to skillfully whip around and nab it with my net as my heart pounded from yet another near-death experience. It's so crazy that a game as laid back as Animal Crossing can provide a moment so harrowing it made me recall my most recent playthrough of Bloodborne. Anyway, that's some more nightmare fuel for Blathers courtesy of yours truly.

Mark Cruz

Ok buddy I got two specific animal facts! One! Two days after I gave medicine my animal friend flurry the hamster remembered and gave me a present. Days after. Wow. Second! I love how they turn around and wave and smile when you leave their houses after visiting

Travis McGaughey

Hi all, What is your feeling on random villagers? Would you rather be able to choose your villagers by hand, or do you think that would take something away from the game?

Leafeonn (Josh K)

The Animal Crossing soundtracks have always been my favorite part of the series. The most calming, chill music and always good to listen to. They've gotten me through endless hours of studying or work, long train rides, reading sessions, etc. After opening up the Resident Services building, you also finally unlock the hourly themes. After finally hearing them, they're great! I've been so excited to hear New Horizon's soundtrack, and I'm not surprised to see it's still as boppin as ever. What IS surprising though, is HOW BOPPIN IT IS! The new 5pm theme is so funky, it sounds like it was pulled straight out of Persona 5! What are all of your favorite songs so far from New Horizons?

Tim Lorow

If you donate amber to the museum, the Blathers will make a clear Jurassic Park reference!

Nick from Atlanta

Hello Froggy Chair Cultists! I've really been enjoying my first foray into the Animal Crossing! I've been playing way too much every day. I bought 16k Turnips on Sunday, and I've allocated a lot of my space for rare flower farming. While I'm definitely enjoying my time, the game could use some improvements. If you could add or improve a mechanic, what would you do? Other than being able to craft in your house with things in storage, cause that's mine. For the glory of Froggy Chair! Nick from Atlanta

Nick from Atlanta

Multiplayer time! I had friends over on Sunday night to play some games - mostly tag focused, but I also hid some designs around the island for extra points. It was a great way to catch up with friends while we're all stuck inside. Have you done anything fun with friends? Nick from Atlanta

majj

The attention to detail was brought up in the last game club, but I just can’t get over it. Villagers comment on what you wear, mention things that you were doing the day before (“were you really out hitting rocks? Not that I was watching...”), and I’ve even gifted a villager with a flamingo and they put it in their house. How the game’s characters are so adaptive to everything is extremely impressive and must have been an absolute nightmare to code, translate, and localize. But it’s not going unnoticed!

Adam Quane

This is my first Animal Crossing game and, maybe the first game in a while I can truly call a watercooler game. I love how every new thing, regardless of pertinence, is a great, big, new discovery that I can share with my friends who own the game and vice versa. I'm currently charged with crafting some items for three random homes that are about to be filled and the loop feels nice. It might sound sad, and maybe even a little creepy, but I can't wait to decorate a Christmas tree on this thing 😆.

Andrew Craig

This game has completely changed the dynamic of my household. While gaming has been a huge part of my life since childhood, my girlfriend really never got into it. Old games are too confusing, the camera in modern games make her sick, and most games stress her out because if she doesn’t jump at the right moment, even the simplest enemy will kill you. That means no Uncharted, no Borderlands, no Zelda or Mario or even Kirby. But in the three years we’ve been together, every one of our friends who heard about this would say “Oh, you should be playing Animal Crossing. It’s all about making friends, completing simple tasks, decorating your house, and shopping.” Out of a sense of defiance, she’s managed to avoid it…until now. Last Monday, after enduring a weekend of social media literally EXPLODING with Animal Crossing memes, I popped into the eShop and pulled the trigger. After resetting until I got peaches (her favorite fruit), I got started on our island leaving space next door for her eventual house. The cheerful sounds of island life caught her attention, but it was the opportunity to build her avatar that made her decide to give it a real go. Four hours later, she had paid off her trip, learned to fish, and customize her clothes. Now our days are dictated by life on Kyoshi Island. She wakes me up in the morning so we can watch the daily announcements together, she uses the online features to play and keep up with friends, and she falls asleep to the sound of me planting orchards or fishing so I can afford the next upgrade to my house. During such a confusing time, Animal Crossing New Horizons has provided us a sense of calm, a consistent topic of discussion, and finally helped my girlfriend understand my hobby.

Bdun912

So articles have started popping up online about star fragments and the star wand. As far as I know, I haven’t had any opportunity to wish on shooting stars yet. To make it more confusing, Celeste showed up and gave me the recipe but still nothing. I was staring at the sky for at least an hour! With a podcast but still. Do you guys know how this works? Some people say it’s a glitch some say it’s random and some say it’s solely based on the morning announcement of a meteor shower.

Mason Cowell

This is hyper specific, but I realized today that if you eat a fruit, the animation implies that your character is reaching up into your menu and pulling out a fruit. And I love that.

Shawn Mills

I usually dont like games where equipment breaks but I think Animal Crossing handles it really well. Its so easy to craft a new item when one breaks and there are always plenty of resources to make basic tools. Even when travelling to other islands you have multiple ways to get new equipment and you never feel let down by something breaking.

betoq92 .

Hey you Animal Crossers, first off I’ve really been loving this game I’ve clocked in 65 hours already! My question is have you tried the nook miles cast master challenge? You have to get 100 fish in a row without losing one. It took me 3 tries, the first ended at 68 due to someone leaving my island abruptly, and the second at 94 because of a sneeze. When I finally got it I jumped for joy and quickly realized I hadn’t stood up for about 5 hours. Remember to take breaks everyone!

Jeorin

I don't have too much new to add. I've mostly just been enjoying the relaxed pace of the game. One thing I've noticed that is really obscure: The plane that takes you to nook ticket islands seems to be colored based on your airport, which differs from person to person. I do have a couple of achievements since the first post. I got cast master 100, caught every possible March bug and fish, and tonight, during the meteor shower, got 200 wishes! The cast master 100 in particular is nice to have done, as it takes so much pressure out of fishing. I also discovered a nook ticket badge for losing a floating present. I wasn't paying attention and popped it over a river haha. Makes me curious what some of the other hidden badges may be.

Jeorin

I also have to say I love how active the villagers are in this installment. My neighbor Cookie was doing yoga or something in the community area, and I've also found my neighbor Katt in that same area singing a cute little song. The villagers actually build their own furniture to decorate their houses with, instead of having an instantly furnished home like in previous games. There are so many little things that make this game feel alive.

Bdun912

What is your favorite internet trend or meme to come from the game or community so far?

Johnny Magrippis

I love how eager Timmy and Tommy always are! When they open up their own shop, did you notice they'll follow you around as you're browsing? I don't like it IRL, but the way they scoot towards you with their tiny feet is just adorable. Also adorable: when you use your wardrobe to try out different outfits, every time you put something on, you strike a different pose! Now that's something I love in Animal Crossing and IRL!

MickManga

It's a simple thing but I find it very interesting all the different containers they have added for fish and bugs. Especially when compared to the small amount of different containers the previous Animal Crossing games had.

Phil Crifo

Hey Ben & CLCH ! First time playing an AC game, I’m sticking with it despite not being completely hooked at this point. The game is about relashionships but playing offline creates a dreading sense of isolation... The only thing I think would tie the experience together is Interacting with my friends online, visiting each other and sharing things. I don’t have an Online subscription but I certainly will get one, as it seems to be the only way the game will make sense for me in the long run. Are you guys finding fun outside of online mode? Is AC a viable single player game? How did previous gen games work on that front? Stay safe boys 💖

AnAttackCorgi

Hello fellow Villagers! If Ben was a villager, what animal/type would he be, and what would his three move-in items be? I know one thing for sure; his sentence qualifier would be “cohort”
