I recently completed two sequential playthroughs of FFXV totaling over 120 hours. I can confidently say the FF7 remake battle system is exceedingly more engaging than its “predecessor,” except in one key area. In FFXV the magic system was so useless that battles were essentially hold attack, occasionally dodge, and infrequently use a special weapon attack- quite boring. If you ignore magic and ATB actions in FF7R you are going to get steamrolled. This expanded range of actions during a battle provide for more engaging encounters except for the strangely missing dodge and parry mechanics. FFXV allowed you to dodge attacks by expending MP’s in addition to parry and counter mechanics- this might have been the best part of FFXV’s battle system. After years of Souls games, KH3, and a depressing amount of time in FFXV, dodge and parry feels sorely lacking. I find myself instinctively dodging with Cloud only to see the poor guy take an attack up the arse. I’m grateful to have more attack options during combat, but dodge and parry feel strangely absent in this generation of game.

What’s up Cohorts? Excited to participate in the Deepest Dive for the first time! Also, first time participating in Final Fantasy 7. The only frame-of-reference I have on the series is FF14 (which I just recently got back into). My take away: The planet bleeds green. Cloud’s eyes are green. When npc’s die, they evaporate into GREEN mako dust. So please, for the love of god, why the !@#$ are mako shards red?! This bothers me so much. FF14’s MP bar is colored pinkish-red, so I’m assuming MP being that color is an FF thing, but like, the bar’s white in this and it just breaks that world building, especially considering materia are actually these vibrant orbs. I’m ok with consumables and power-ups being stylized, but if you’re gonna play into that play into it all they way. Or am I totally missing something?

The side quests in chapter 3 were very bland, but I did like the character development with Tifa that came alongside them. Hopefully each chapter with side quests has a character to develop alongside them.

I'm surprised at how much I'm liking the characters. It has been a while since I really connected with the characters in a Final Fantasy game, and even though I really enjoyed XV, I stall wasn't able to be too invested in anyone in that game. It could be nastalgia speaking but I'm loving the portrayal of almost everyone in the game, Barret excluded. He is the one character I was really looking forward to seeing a new take on as I was so dissapointed in the way he was written when I was younger. So far I feel this is the one area where they have dropped the ball and I'm just hoping it gets better as the game goes on. And one small sidenote, does Biggs remind anyone else of Solid Snake? Whenever he's on screen I can't help but hope for an MGS1 remake that is as well done as this game.

Hoi! Minnmax, First time playing a FF title, Minnmax only reason why I decided to buy this and not Doom or RE 3. That sudden camera shift right when a battle begins, muaaah! So doooope! Reminds me of an AMC show like breaking bad or the walking dead, during a flashback that suddenly cuts to some gritty violent standoff.

Ahoy therre Minnie-Maxers! So I've had a bit of a derp right out of the gate. At some point during playing through the start of the game, I pressed L2 and removed the minimap and compass from the top of my screen. For the mako reactor at the very start it really didn't matter, since I played this section a couple times thanks to the demo. However, right after that I found myself getting lost in Sector 7 and being frustrated at having to open the map so many times. Anyways, at some point doing side-quests through the abandoned factory I accidentally turned it back on! I felt like a dolt, and actually facepalmed when I discovered this. After about 10 minutes of playing with the mini-map, however, I felt the sudden urge to turn it off again. While I was having a frustrating time navigating, I found myself just staring at the mini-map instead of enjoying the new environments that were built! All that just to say that I am still gawking at what they manage to build from 2D drawings, If you can, I highly suggest playing without the mini-map or compass, it really makes you look at the world! Hope you guys are dreading later events in the game as much as me! -Jeeo Banogy

Hello. I loved that the track The Promised Land from Advent Children appeared! Did not expect that. And I find it interesting that they use the FF7 Main Theme while walking around the Sector 7 slums. Hate your show

henrik mortensen

Hey ho. Why does it take so long to see the character models in the enemy type menu? I never bother to wait for them to appear before I leave the screen. PS: Love the animation of Cloud removing the webs in the subway or wherever it was. Hate your show

Hey guys - first time playing any version of FFVII and am loving it. That opening?! Holy damn moly. I was getting emotional even without nostalgia! But let's talk about that scene where Cloud meets Sephiroth in the alley. Am I correct in assuming that Sephiroth did not appear this early in classic FFVII? If that's correct, then... I feel like showing Sephiroth so early is a little too fan service-y and -- HOLD IT! 187 comments on Patreon, and not ONE person has mentioned the NPC who is literally a face scan of Ben Hanson?! And that his mouth/voice sync is absolutely atrocious, the worst in the game thus far, leading to the OBVIOUS conclusion that they reskinned an existing NPC at the 11th hour to get Hanson into the game? The character is LITERALLY just, "Hey, Modeling guy - can you take this Twitter avatar photo and model it in-game for this NPC? No, just... just use this angle. Don't bother Animation with it. Not important. And use the existing VO. Don't ask questions. Just do this before the game goes Gold next week." Hanson, congrats on your debut. Proud of you, man.

This is my first time playing FF7, what most stuck out to me was how the game makes me feel unheroic as Cloud. In particular breaking into Jessie's parents house feels terrible and when you see her Dad in a coma it highlights how gross what you are doing is. Im enjoying the game so far and Im excited to see where this story goes

Brian W

Being my first time playing FF7 I was really hoping to bring some brilliant insights to this deep dive, but unfortunatley my specific moment is a weird throw away. At the end of chapter four I ran past these two lovers talking about how much they loved each other and it sounded like the guy was about to propose then he just started snoring and fell asleep. I was shocked by the weirdness of this dialogue and went looking for these characters. As far as I could tell the people who said this hadn’t changed their animations and were just the two business people Barrett yelled at on the train. They remained in their static animations looking at each other slightly hugging like this weird conversation never happened. Anybody else overhear this weird moment?

Carl Grenier

Heya! Played the game multiple times as a kid, but I would have never gotten past the escape sequence if one of my oldest and best friend at the time (and still is today) had not said to maybe go talk to that character that was kneeling. You can imagine my reaction when I saw her leg actually being stuck in the sequence in the Remake. Anyway, the moment that caught my attention the most was very quick and subtle. It's near the end of Chapter 4, once the attack of the Dementors is over. When Cloud picks up Jessie to bring her inside 7th Heaven. The camera shows Tifa's reaction very briefly before changing camera angle and she REALLY didn't like that action from Cloud. You could feel her jealousy even after the camera cut. I loved that moment so much. Can't wait to see other moments like that once Aerith enters the arena! Another moment I loved a lot is when you clear the dart games before leaving 7th Heaven to board the train. Wedge gives you the price (probably with the stock line he'd say everytime), but then he adds "After you guys come back from the plate, maybe we can play a round together!". I'm not sure if he says that later in the game, if you clear the game, but considering the mission that is about to begin, it just felt so perfect and like a small addition that the devs added in case someone would clear it at that specific moment. It may or may not be the case, but the timing was just perfect and made my day. Otherwise, random thought about how much I'm loving the humour in that game. I knew I'd love a lot of things about it, but I didn't expect the humour to be so good and on point. Big praise to the writers and the voice actors in that regard!

Josh Viscusi

I love this game! I played the PC version as a kid know nothing about it, I just fell in love with the character art. It was in a bargain bin at KB toys. Played it for like 100 hours so coming back to this brought tears to my eyes multiple times. The one thing that is throwing me way off and it’s almost impossible for me to get over is the NPCs. It looks like square left the lumina engine and went to unreal and pulled a bunch of free basic human models off the asset store. I absolutely hate it! Square made it seem like the super high poly beautiful character models they made for the main characters are from a completely different dimension. I don’t even think they’re scaled properly. Does it bother anyone else?

Nognaught

Wow, what a fantastic game. I was shocked when I realised it's actually a 1:1 recreation of the original Midgard section with nothing new added - its just so much longer because of the time spent shimmying through thin corridors

skatestreets.game

It's cool how there's a data disc and a play disc - do we think the next game will contain only a data disc in box that installs all the new content for us to play ahead with on our play disc?

Hugo Aguilar

Can we talk about how silly Roche is? His introduction was one of dumbest and funniest intros so far, his over the top motorcycle moves are hilarious. I really want to know why he can go around and just kill other Shinra troops? What are you thoughts?

Forest Gerlach

Hey all! Final Fantasy VII was sort of a weird mythical sacred cow to me growing up, as I never had a Playstation but read all about it in Tips & Tricks. Playing the remake now is... surreal in the best way, to say the least. Anyways, there's been so many great moments throughout the first few chapters, big and little, but the part that sticks in my mind most is in chapter three, when Cloud hears noises in the apartment room next to his and busts the door. Inside, he sees what he believes is Sephiroth, so he takes a stance, tries to draw his buster sword... then totally biffs it on the top of the doorframe and panics. Aside from the reality check being kinda funny, to me that short lapse of judgment also gives us a good look at the person Cloud is trying to hide, the one who's not always calm and professional. We've already seen a few glimpses before, such as Cloud's reticence to hook up the reactor bomb, so we have hints that his mercenary outlook is just a front. But in this one moment where Cloud bonks that doorframe, all of that composure is gone, and he goes from cool-headed to immediate fear while he fights off the hallucination. To wit, he barely reacted to a giant robo-scorpion or weird phantom things in the streets. He gets shot at regularly and doesn't care (though judging by the damage numbers, Shinra's probably packing airsofts). One slip of the sword though? Instant loss of control. There's more I wanna say about that part and Cloud's character too, but that would delve far into spoiler territory beyond what's in the first part of the remake. Suffice it to say though, this one moment is SUPER fascinating to me X-D

Matthew Paxton

I keep hitting Triangle to hit the menu. Every time. I know it’s the options button, but I’ve played so, so much of the original, it’s instinctual.

Joel Hopkins

I really enjoy the game, but does anyone else just find everything feels really slow? It just feels like so many times I am stopped to crawl following someone. I know a lot of games games do this but it feels worse somehow. It feels similar to Red Dead 2 but for me it's more frustrating because the animation aren't as unique or cool in these situation. But yeah still love it but just something that's been bothering me.

Joshua Duperoy

Hey guys, I was just curious if you were playing with subtitles or not. I could see how it would be useful for memorizing the characters names, especially if you’ve never played the original, but I prefer to play without. ***Also, my favorite callback to the original so far is the wimpy security guard you run into after departing the train station and arriving in Midgar. I kinda love how easy it is to miss and so much more effective with voiceover.

Taylor Owens

This game is way better than it has any right to be, and I genuinely think it’s the best storytelling Square has ever done. A perfect encapsulation for me is the sequence with Jesse’s dad. Though a completely new scene, if you’ve played the original you’ll know it connects to a key plot point way later on. But at the time, that went over my head, because I was so caught up in Jesse’s personal story. It’s the exact opposite of what these kinds of things usually do, where they are so busy beating you over the head with callbacks to the original, they can’t tell a good story on their own.

SweetManbrosia

I felt guilty stopping back at Jessie's house after Wedge told me to stay away. He gave me a heartfelt warning about getting too attached to her, but there's no way I wasn't going to stop over there after. Was his motivation based off of a hidden love for her, past experience/observation with others, or is he just watching out for the heart of his new friend. I love both of these characters, and I'm worried about where their stories will go.

Taylor Owens

Does Tifa know how much I love her? How do I tell her?!?!?

Israel Roque

I hope im not too late to submit. So, mine is not specific to any chapter really, but i just love the lack of consistency in the worlds logic. Specifically Cloud. In one point he can jump super high with little effort, and others he suddenly forgets how. And the fight with the motorcycle guy doing all those ridiculous spins, love it!

Even 23 years later, the Materia System is still one of the most fun systems in video games to experiment with. I'm very glad that they kept it pretty much the way it was. Seeing Materia laying on the floor is always so exciting and I can't wait to pick it up and figure out what it does. It might be my favorite loot in games. By the way, since some people seem to overlook it: you can press R1 on the Materia & Equipment menu to manage everyone's Materia on one screen. This is especially helpful later on in the game, when you have to juggle Materia between several characters.

Dennis M.

The jukebox discs are a really cool collectible, even though the music doesn't always blend in well with the surroundings (it can be jarring at times). What's the coolest thing about the discs is that each comes with original album art. They didn't have to do it, but they did. And I love it.

Dennis M.

The whole Wedge gets bitten in the ass thing was definitely goofy, but stuff like that is exactly what I want from the Remake. FF7 always had its goofy moments. In the original he didn't get bit in the ass, sure, but his ass caught fire when escaping the first reactor. They just moved the scene to the new "Avalanche Chapter" and changed it up.

Andrew vala

Last thing, I promise! I can’t help but love this game. Sephiroth’s introduction in Chapter 2 was pretty damn intimidating. I didn’t realize how tall he was until then; he’s outright looming over Cloud. I appreciate how much of a direct threat he feels like now and I’m looking forward to seeing how they weave him into the rest of the game.

Leah Christensen

Two questions: 1) Did you guys find it odd when Avalanche was on the train or walking through the Slums, that no one mentioned Barrett's huge gunarm or Cloud's big ass sword, but everyone was worked up about terrorist? It felt a little jarring to me. 2) This is probably be more for Hanson, but do you think you would have worked in the game industry if it had not been for Final Fantasy VII? For me, Final Fantasy VII was the first time I was blown away by a video game and a new level of storytelling. Since FFVII, video games have become a big part of my life and one of the main connections I have with my boyfriend, brother and students (I'm a teacher). I'm not sure I would have fallen in love with video games the same way if it was not for Final Fantasy VII.

Timothy Smith

I remember in the demo there was an odd line where Barrett called Cloud a "Stamp" and I wasn't sure what to make of it. I figured it was supposed to mean scamp, but as you progress you come across Shinra Propaganda mascot Stamp, a cute little dog wearing an army helmet. I guess it's now a thing in this universe to call Shinra loyalists a Stamp. It's just such and odd detail to have added to this world, but I kinda like it.

Jeremy Olson

Why is there no way to disable the UI!? I just want to take pretty screenshots of Aerith’s garden!!! Besides that I’m having an absolute blast playing this game despite never touching a FF game before. I just want to give Barrett a massive hug all the time, what a love-able guy.

G-Max Thoeren

I was really caught off guard by some of the subtlety of the themes in this game. The idea that Barrett and Cloud having things to learn from each other is present in the original, but it feels way more developed in the remake. In particular, the elevator scene after setting off the bomb in the reactor stood out to me. We see Barrett freaking out while the elevator is going up and shaking, but when he sees Cloud just chilling out with his eyes closed, he calms down, realizing there is nothing he can do about the situation. However, when Barrett leaves the elevator, we see that Cloud had actually dozed off, meaning his coolheadedness was coming from a place of apathy, rather than a mature assessment of the situation.

Tom

It seems clear that part of the DNA of FFVII is "sick motorcycle fights", a topic explored from the original and fleshed out in Advent Children and personified with Roche in Chapter 4. Having recently re-watched AC, how do you think that FF VII Remake compares and borrows from that work as Nomura and Co. approach the definitive version of their work? Are there any other parallels that you see between the two? Will we get FF VII AC Remake!?

Justin Ray

Square Enix really decided to crank up the profanity from the original. My virgin ears were tainted over this holy Easter weekend.

Duderado

Best opening ever! I loved the transition from the kids at the park, to Aerith, then to the title, then again to the train where the demo started. It was unbelievable. During the train scene the music starts to amp up slightly when Barret is shown then finally swells when Cloud jumps off the top. It was such an awesome string of events right out of the gate. A minute detail I noticed once you gain control of Cloud is that he will trip over the bodies of the degeated guards laying on the floor. This is a rare moment since most enemies disappear after they've been defeated. Final comment: this may be a JRPG thing but I've never heard more sighs in my life (except for my ex-wife)! There are some conversations where Cloud will sigh 5 times in a row without saying any real words. It's obvious he isn't a social guy but dang, he barely even talks to the 3 women gunning for his affection.

Jamie Lee Turdis

Biggs looks like Charlie Sheen. TIger Blood.

Anthony J Kane

What is everyone’s best Dart score? I have it down to Six darts thrown for 150.50 points per round. I don’t think you can do any better than that. Can you?

Charles Bean

Anyone else notice the lack of texture on Stargazer Heights doors? It’s driving me bananas! Beautiful game otherwise.

Robyn Jones

So the filter service they provide is paid for after the filter has run out and then replaced? Surely people should be buying the new filter when its installed. What an odd system Also I'm having ridiculous texture load issues. Not just me is it?

Robyn Jones

In Seventh Heaven there is a picture on the wall of another bar? Why? Or is it the same bar? Even more why?

Robyn Jones

First time on FF7. Everyone says Cloud is not very likeable for alot at the start. I'm not getting this. They seem to be trying to portray him as a bit of a dick but it seems like every one is being a dick to him from my view. 'Look at his massive sword but he has no skills' 'I have skills' 'Hey be nice' What? Who's the one not being nice here?

James Knight

As someone that missed the boat on the original. Do the people that have played the original, know what the hell is with the dementors? (A yes or no will suffice)

Robyn Jones

After saving Johnny Tifa says we have to go before they wake up. Does that mean even with the huge sword we're not killing anyone. Just simply knock them out???

Andrew King

I really enjoyed the moment when Jessie takes Biggs and Wedge in to see her parents and Cloud sneaks in the back door to take her father’s Shinra ID. The trope of having a character execute a plan as another character explains the plan via voiceover is super common in movies, especially heist scenes, but I can’t remember playing through something similar in a game. This whole excursion does a fantastic job of developing the B-tier Avalanche crew.

Nick from Atlanta

I loved Chapter 2's music, because it seemed to take a page out of the same book that Monster Hunter World did. We now have two versions of the battle theme: Active and Passive. It's a great way of keeping the energy and urgency throughout, even when you aren't in combat, and also rolls into the higher energy of combat well!

Chris Hodge

The Sahagins have a move called Jump that, I believe, is the same as one of Cid’s Limit breaks in the original game.

Hyperlight Blossom

Walking through a street in Sector 5, I heard an old man telling kids he was part of the construction crew that built the discs. After talking to a quest-giver I walked back down the street and heard those kids say, "I wish I was alive back then to help build the discs ! Yeah that would've been so cool !" This was such a natural implementation of dynamic dialogue. I wasn't forced to stand and listen to a whole conversation, but rather the conversation is presumed continued in my absence. As if Midgar isn't brought to life enough by stunning visuals, little touches like that are making my experience so surreal.

Hyperlight Blossom

Also, when you pick up the Chocobo & Moogle summoning materia, Barret goes, "Man, I wonder what kind of bad ass is gonna pop out of this one !" Made me lol.
