This week is our final discussion for Final Fantasy VII Remake. It's been a wild ride. On this spoiler-filled discussion, we're talking even more about the game's ending AND our thoughts on the game through the lens of the full original 1997 game. If you're new, you can catch up on previous discussions in the Patreon-exclusive podcast feed or on MinnMax's YouTube channel.

This is our chance to spoil the original game. We already have a lot of comments on the ending from the last episode, so what we could use are scenes throughout the remake that hint at something from the original game in an interesting way and your predictions for where the remake is going in the future. Please only submit one comment this time around. The more specific your comment is, the higher likelihood we'll read it on air. The last call for submitting a comment will on Tuesday around noon.

Thanks again for playing along, writing in, and sharing The Deepest Dive with a friend! This has been an amazing journey!

I feel like everyone is overlooking Cloud in this. The core of FF7 is Cloud's story and the whispers seemed especially interested in stopping Cloud from finding out he is not a Soldier. The few times they physically move you completely out of a situation is when Hojo is about to say too much and when Cloud is getting too good of a look at the pods in the research facility. Cloud is a ticking time bomb. He almost killed Aerith before Sephiroth did in the original and he delivered the Holy Materia to Sephiroth. I think Sephiroth has big plans for a version of cloud not tied down by destiny.

Okay, so I hope people have watched the Easy Allies spoilercast. It makes a huge difference in understanding this game. Without repeating too much of what they said, Sephiroth in this game is NOT the same Sephiroth from the original. He is the Advent Children Sephiroth with knowledge of the future. In the original, Sephiroth's only goal was to get ahold of the black materia to summon meteor, both to heal himself and to become a God. In this game his goal is to change his own destiny of failure. Every time he shows up, it is to disrupt the timeline. Every. Single. Time. The scene I want to call particular attention to is one that confused all of us: President Shinra's death scene. Sephiroth was in fact the one to dangle the president off the side of the building. Why? He wanted Barret to kill the president. It would've corrupted Barret and turned the group against him. Sephiroth stabbed Barret, even though he knew it didn't matter, because Barret failed him. So why would Sephiroth kill the president at all? Same reason he did originally. Either Jenova, or the clone he took control of, wanted the president dead for revenge, and Sephiroth doesn't have complete control over either entity. Curious to see what you guys think, because this fixed one of the more baffling parts of the story for me.

I have some questions for the panel, do you consider this a full fledged FF game? Would you place this in your ranking of the FF games? Would you have rather gotten this or XVI? (whatever it might be) My favorite hints at the bigger story we’re in Cloud’s repose to if he fought in the war (“I might’ve”) and then the random guard recognizing him, as Cloud was also a random guard

Ian Switaj

I'm going to apologize in advance for the long comment but I'm also making up for missing the discussion from last week. 1. In regards to the final chapter, even after all these weeks I still have mixed opinions about it. The final battle with Sephiroth was fun and the set pieces fighting the Arbiter of Fate where phenomenal, but one thing I liked about the OG FF7 was the ramp up to the fantastical as opposed to arbitrarily being thrown into a fights against essentially the l'Cie and fal'Cie from FF13 (I'm sure Kyle would have some insight into that). I really hope this was just Square reaching into their hats for some idea on how to end the first game in the remake on a set-piece and won't be indicative of the rest of the story going forward (the rest of the game has natural "end boss" material for each part, after all). 2. Did anyone notice how the nebula in the background of the Edge of Creation looked an awful lot like Safer Sephiroth? If the theme/concept of time is being thrown into the mix of the original story on top of the already heavy themes of life and death, I wonder if the goals/actions of Sephiroth in the remake will be akin to the Time Devourer in Chrono Cross (with the Edge of Creation being akin to the Darkness Beyond Time). It would be pretty fitting as far as MinnMax is concerned because I recall from the Chrono Trigger topic part of the discussion about the entity (the planet perhaps) that was guiding the player characters' actions. I mean, it wouldn't be the first parallel between FF7 and CT (Jenova v. Lavos). 3. With all of that out of the way, what are everyone's opinions regarding the next set of games in the series? A. How many games do you think are left and how would you envision their stopping points? I would think at least two more with the end of Disc 1 being the end of the second game and the third encompassing the rest (especially since they have fantastic bosses and natural stopping points), but do you think there would be too much to cover? B. How would you want to handle stats/item carry over between the games? Should it be a clean slate for each title or do you think SE could pull off something like the Golden Sun games on the GBA where if you don't carry over your stats you get a default party layout? Would a Mysterious Ninja Girl steal your materia at the beginning of the adventure? C. Speaking of Yuffie, how would you want the optional characters to be incorporated into the story? Should they still be optional side quests (I doubt it with modern game development creating cutscenes for recruiting and not recruiting them)? Would their locations (the Nibelheim mansion, waterfall, Wutai, etc.) be given more story emphasis? Does Yuffie still call Tifa "Boobs" like she did in the original game? D. What silly parts of the story (ex. dolphin, march, disguised Red XIII) or minigames (ex. march, Gold Saucer, and chocobo breeding) would you like to see Square keep in the later entries? If they don't keep all of them which do you think get cut or changed/modernized in some way? E. It was mentioned in the last episode of the Deepest Dive how the game made sure (with the exception of the last chapter) that you never had more than three members in your active party at any given point. But with the safe assumption that the next game will start with the five members you ended the game with, how would you expect party management in future titles to behave? In any case, I don't think it'd be as rough as the original seeing as how all members in the party seem to gain experience regardless of whether or not they participated in battle. F. Probably one of the biggest unknowns that people have long been speculating: How will Square handle the world outside of Midgar both in terms of exploration and storytelling? Every since FF13 Square has gone about splitting their story into "chapters". I think this works rather well for a JRPG since it facilitates the exploration and story to be presented in focused chunks. But do you think they'll try to implement an open world setting a la FF15 (which was panned for being rather barren), and if they don't implement a world that can be navigated how would that compare to and/or impact the latter portions of the game which were dependent on minor exploration and map hopping? Which vehicles survive the jump to modern gaming? G. Do you think they try to incorporate other games of the FF7 Compendium into the mix? You figure Crisis Core has got to be a must (playable Zach perhaps?) but what about Before Crisis or elements of Advent Children? H. What locations are you most excited to visiting? I. Do you think Bugenhagen can even explain what the hell is going on?

I bought the original FFVII on PS4 sometime last year before we knew the remake was coming out. I played the original to get an idea and I liked it. The were a few things I didn't like in the original but the one thing that bummed me out in the original is that we never got to properly fight Sephiroth himself. Just weird Jenova forms and some weird Sephiroth forms. I don't consider that last "fight" with Sephiroth actually fighting him since use Limit Break and he's beaten. In the remake, I loved that we got to fight the man himself not no legs Sephiroth. He was a challenge which I appreciate. Also I thought Zack coming out of the fog was a him getting to Migard then seeing Cloud and the party. I wonder if at some point Zack will show up in the present or lead to some Crisis on Infinite Earths scenario where the player will be able to use both Zack and Cloud at the same time in a future game. Either way I enjoyed the ending with the remake and I'm curious where they will go from here.

Jim Blubello

Not really a comment but I just wanted to thank everyone for this deepest dive. Your guys' passion for the original inspired me to start it after finishing the remake. I just finished the original last week (I finished the remake a couple of weeks ahead) and now I'm even more excited about what will come next in the remake, especially Cosmo Canyon

Bob Buel

Ok so who's gonna die now? Clearly they have changed the timeline that Aerith would normally die in and from a narrative standpoint I think they almost have to change who dies just to prove Aerith's gameplan of challenging fate correct. If Aerith still dies, then what was the point of beating the Whispers? Personally, I think all signs are point to Tifa getting Sephiroth's blade this time around to create their own iconic moment for one of the upcoming games. Also, stealing this from Joe Juba, but this also explains why it isn't called FF7 Remake Part 1, because the games going forward aren't remakes, they are gonna be Reimaginings or Redefined or something along those lines.

Ultima786

I really liked the scene where Cloud falls into the Church, but prior to that he speaks to his real persona. It's almost word-for-word the same as OG. A lot of people think that he's speaking to a future time-traveling Cloud or some nonsense, and forget that this is the same as OG. It's just his real persona poking through the layers of trauma and JENOVA manipulation. Well-done. It's a sign to me that they are going to handle his arc of "finding himself" (or at least Tifa finding him) in a thoughtful way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae0KZ2dwkbI&feature=youtu.be&t=918 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lfY3hAEasI&feature=youtu.be&t=34 https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/comments/ghvvpn/how_on_earth_did_i_not_notice_this_before_spoilers/

RickyWinterborn

i think the golden saucer is what im most excited for. if they made wall market into such a fun part of the game, the golden saucer should be 10+hours of amazing stuff

RickyWinterborn

the boat ride after junion could be really good, maybe a MGS2 kinda thing

Joshua Duperoy

Don’t have any huge speculations about what’s to come in future installments, just super excited to see it come to fruition. I strongly urge you guys to convince either Jeff or Kyle to at least play through the midgar section of the original and record it as a capper to the Ff 7 celebration. I just finished the original for the first time last week and it only takes about 4-5 hours to complete going at a leisurely pace. I think they would really come to appreciate the remake so much more simply by playing that small chunk of the original and maybe even consider playing through all of the game because it really does hold up rather well.

RickyWinterborn

i remember getting airships feeling like a huge moment in ff7 ps1. with the remake logic, this will probably be a huge part of the game? or they totally avoid it, since it's such a can of worms

RickyWinterborn

you think the WEAPON boss fights are gonna be there own dungeon each? i cant imagine theyd just plop on the map like the old game

RickyWinterborn

i think feeling like you never really get to mess with mixing your party in ff7 remake is one of its biggest weaknesses. they better design the next game to allow for more freedom

RickyWinterborn

would ya'll rather them slowly and subtly deviate from the old story from here on out or basically have an entirely new story, that still goes to all the same locations

RickyWinterborn

they should design the next game so that dungeons can require free switching of chars, and do puzzles where you have to use barrets gun in conjunction with tifas parkour or whatever. basically take the char switching aspect of battle and use it for more interesting levels

RickyWinterborn

yall see the freaky mods out there for ff7 on PC? someone made realistic-ish sized people, but still with blocky flat graphics. its really weird, but could be a fun way to replay the orig

RickyWinterborn

man hanson triggering the ghost story line idea in nomura's head is freaky, now minnmax deepest dive of the game is technically canon (100% confirmed for sparking nutsack ghost idea)

Odyssey

Dear Benjamin, I'm proud of how far you all have come since Gameinformer. Now - to talk about the Remake! 1) The real mystery isn't the time travel - it's "Why did Square choose to make this a sequel to the expanded FF7 Universe"? Crisis Core is great, but the rest includes Advent Children, that mobile game and Dirge of Cerberus...woof. 2) Square effectively wrote themselves into a bad story hole. The only way to create a remake that revisits Midgar AND make it a sequel is of course...a time travel/multiverse story, e.g. MK 9, MK11, Terminator Genesys/Daenarys and Marvel Endgame. The time travel/multiverse stuff in these make no sense, requiring drama, over the top action and good characters to disguise the nonsense. By the way, the Edge of Creation looks similar to the final time stage of MK 11 where you fight Kronika, just without a giant hourglass. 3) The mechanics of the time travel is vague and poorly delivered. I get it, hardcore fans like Maximilian (youtuber) love theorycrafting and I appreciate his talk about the "levels man". But it's still awkward and dumb in the last chapter! You're not sure what Aerith knows, and all the characters say vague dumb time wimey stuff like Red 13: "Is it our destiny to defy destiny?". I'll come back to this. 3) Square Enix has a poor track record of time travel/multiverse stories, that are also sequels! FF13-2, FF13-3 and 3rd Birthday ruined FF13 (which was bad already) and Parasite Eve's legacy respectively. Hell, even Chrono Cross was weird as a sequel to Chrono Trigger. There's literally a line in 3rd birthday where someone says "I'm going on a journey to find eternity". Also, in FF13-3, "Destiny is Destiny". This dumb stuff infected the dialogue at the end of Remake. 4) Personally, I never expected Remake to be a sequel. My jaw dropped seeing Zach and all, but the scenes, dialogue and character motivations just dropped in quality during the final chapter. I would have been ok with creative freedom and crazy changes that diverted from the original, just as long as it was good and made sense in and of itself and wasn't a secret sequel. Now they've blown their load on that Sephiroth fight, and it's the stupid Advent Children Sephiroth too where he says nonsense like "This is the edge of creation" and wants to be in Cloud’s a-hole. Let's see if they can salvage this.

Vindicated

I think that if they remade this game without the whispers, in many ways Aerith and Sephiroth, would lack the impact that they had in the original, because we would already know what would happen. But now, with these twists, I believe it opens up new ways for Aerith and Sephiroth to impact us in a different, but equally big way. Also I love the idea of the title “Remake” having a double meaning, referring to the game itself and Sephiroth’s plans.

EJ Crough

Do you think the next game will find a way to import this one's save? In other words, did I already screw up getting my Barret date?! PS - Thanks again for doing this, and if anyone hasn't experienced the advent children commentary y'all did, they should - it was hilarious!

Preetham Yarlagadda

How much foresight do you think has been put into all these breadcrumbs? I love all this theorizing but do you think they have a solid roadmap already built or is this a throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks kind of approach? I disagree with the idea that a good series needs to be planned out from the start, but something gives me the impression that it's the latter and that's kind of worrisome considering that most of this game is foreshadowing to future events. You guys have probably scoured the internet for theories and interviews so would love any insight!

SalopianDweller

Regardless of whether Square are playing around with alternate timelines, could it be argued that every play through of FF7 original or remake are in fact parallel universes of each other, as everyone of us plays the game slightly differently. Thus when making the sequel/remake of FF7, with Square potentially adding the prospect of parallel universes with significant differences, is it not our ‘the players’ fault this happens, as we’ve been ‘breaking’ the original story with so many ‘parallel universe’ play throughs of the game(s) all having small differences, big differences were bound to occur?

Zach Gileau

With Kitase saying that they're not drastically changing the story of Final Fantasy 7 with this remake, this seems to confirm that things may not change as much as we think they might. One thing I'm fairly confident that they will change is the ending of Final Fantasy 7. Kitaste has said in the past that he considered the ending to be a 'bad ending' where the party fails to save humanity. So what would you want from a different ending of Final Fantasy 7? What does a 'good ending' of Final Fantasy 7 constitute and how do they make this work thematically? Maybe Cloud and the party find out that despite being able to chart their own course that they can't change destiny as much as they'd like to. I have absolutely no idea where they're taking this and that's honestly exciting to me.

Jonathan Fenn

The thing I'm most interested in is how they'll handle exploration - I'm one of the few defenders of FFXV's open world, so if they can manage something along those lines I'll be very pleased. The things Mark Cerny has been saying about how the PS5 will handle open worlds makes me hopeful they'll be able to pull this off at least somewhat successfully. Now I've seen how great remake Red XIII is, my absolute most anticipated scene is the reveal about Seto's last stand - the music is going to be sublime.

Patrick O'Connor

I'm curious to see if it's not just the case where Sephiroth and Aerith know their potential futures, I'm wondering if they've experienced them already. From the moment we met Aerith I wondered we were in a Legend of Zelfa style cyclical story.

Matt Clarmont

This is a stretch and I meant to post it for your last deepest dive, but regarding chapter 15 music... I am an absolute lover of Final Fantasy 4. I can't help it, that is the RPG that got me into the genre despite playing a few RPGs before it. I digress. The song for much of that chapter, basically when you first arrived inside the Shinra garage, is entitled Operation Save Aerith. In that song (https://youtu.be/SMnU-FuIuX4 0:29-0:55) are several bars from the chorus of FF4s Zeromus battle (https://youtu.be/FncYFCrkF5c 0:46-1:06). I am having trouble seeing a connection outside of just being a nod to Nobuo Uematsu but i wondered if the guys who (maybe?) love FF4 music, like myself, can see something? Maybe... MAYBE... due to the potential new timeline we go to the moon? When Zeromus is at critical health, he DOES cast meteo, maybe it's just a subtle foreshadowing for those who love FF4 such as myself? I don't know, it's probably nothing, but i love that song from the soundtrack and my bias might be working overtime here. Noticed that Ben quickly mentioned some music on the last Deepest Dive and Operation Save Aerith was one of those songs so kudos for that. I gotta say, the possibilities presented by this ending have my mind linked with a maxed out Magnify for the past few weeks and i love it. Respect the pun.

MickManga

While I don't have any predictions, I do hope that future games continue to give all new characters the same level of developments that FF7 remake gave it's cast. It was such a treat have a classic ps1 rpg remade. I hope one day Chrono Cross can get similar treatment.

Tom

Hey all, thanks for making the most thorough discussion on the internet about FF VII Remake. My question for you is what do you think will be their priority in terms of all major square releases? Nomura has stated that the next Kingdom Hearts game won't be on such a drawn on development cycle, so do you think that could be next? Do you think that there will be a FF XVI released or revealed during the entire span of remake/sequel development? What are your thoughts?

CalebMurray

Just a short thought here. When Cloud tells Sephiroth that he killed him Sephiroth says something along the lines of "oh I remember" but we all know that Cloud and Tifa for that matter failed to do that before this point in the timeline. So this has to be the Sephiroth from the original remembering back to the end of the original FF7 right? Also what Cloud does at the edge of creation is basically how you kill Sephiroth at the end of OG FF7 ( unless you counterattack a hit) but Sephiroth has already been through that once and is why he can so easily deflect it without so much as moving a foot. This is of course just a theory right now but pretty strong evidence of this being OG Sephiroth come back to get the crew to kill / defeat fate (which he does) so he can win this time around.

TimeBombTom

So I think we are very much dealing with an MCU Multiverse situation for lack of a better term very close to Infinity war going on here, I really believe there are gonna be tons of branches breakinf off from the original, I feel going forward this is something that they are throwing at the OG players to keep it new as well as doing something different, we have Sephiroth who is probably from the original game that has hopped into the Universe to change events which is why the whispers are trying to keep things the same, we have Zack in a clearly different Universe dealing with the Stamp chip bag, going forward is it fully expected that at some point we will no longer be Cloud and in fact be Zack in a different universe where we keep Aerith alive at the cost of tifa perhaps because something that has finality has to happen and that the original ending was the bad ending that we thought was correct, this whole concept of this being a Multiverse is just mind blowing if this is actually where they are going with the direction of this game, like what if we decide and it goes into Mass Effect style decisions where, unlike that game, actually influences the ending and progression of this story, there is so much going on if this is the way things transpire, I mean I guess what are your thoughts?

Joe Holaska

During the last Deepest Dive, you talked about Hojo’s comment about “their offspring.” I felt it was clear he was talking about Aerith and Sephiroth. Aerith is an Ancient and Sephiroth is the son of Hojo and Lucretia, infused with Jenova cells. He wants to see the results of a cross-breed of an Ancient and, effectively, Jenova.

Joe Holaska

I’m assuming the implication is that the guys with the numbers tattooed are Sephiroth clones like Cloud and Kadaj and his gang. Will we get a grand battle at the end of Final Fantasy VII: Reunion where you take on like 50 Sephiroths?

Anthony Bazz

What do you see as the perfect stopping point for part 2? Forget thinking about how many parts there will be in total. The next part will (hopefully) span several locations starting on what I can only assume to be a road to Kalm. And if the start is in the kalm flashback I see the best end point for part 2 to be Nibelheim. So we will get another late game guest party member in Vincent and another great spot for "fate" to shift as nibelheim/shines mansion is kind of the center of it all. Thank you so much for the fan service on a game that all my friends are sick of hearing about.

Christian Haines

Is the retcon/revision dimension of the game unfriendly towards consumers? And is it part of a more general problem with the marketing of the game, which, as folks like Jason Schreier have noted, does not advertise itself as Part 1? In other words, is this a game that falsely presents itself as both a good entry point and as a complete story? By the way, I didn’t mind so much, despite not having played the original (I’m certainly old enough, but I mostly avoided JRPGs in the 90s). I just had to look up a plot summary of the original to make sense of things. Also, a big thanks for all your efforts in putting this deep dive together - it was great!

Taylor Owens

I think a lot of the reason for the timeline shift is for structural changes to fit the next installments. That way they can pace them how they want. I really want the remake to the match the main beats of the original like City of the Ancients, Northern Crater and Tifa piecing Cloud’s mind together. But if they want to change how you meet Yuffie or Vincent or let you brutally murder Cait Sith, I’m good with that. Also, the legless Sephiroth you were so worried about is his iconic angelic form boss fight at the end of the original game Hanson.

ddark

I absolutely loved how crazy the ending of this game was. I decided to beat the original FF7 after I finished the remake. I am most interested in seeing if Cloud still ends up a broken mess at some point. The little polygonal Cloud in the wheel chair shaking his head still effected me quite a bit. I hope they do something cool with it!

IanTClark

I’ll keep this short and sweet: From a combat perspective, there is nothing more satisfying than moving from Tifa’s Omnistrike or whirling uppercut right into her Divekick. Mapping your character’s moves to L1 + the button of your choice is a great way to make the combat feel more fluid when focusing on physical attacks.

Andrew George

*SPOILERS FOR THE REMAKE AND ORIGINAL GAME* After replaying the game on Hard mode to further contemplate the ending of the remake and watching playthroughs of the original I think the future remakes might tie the more divergent aspects of the remake like the whispers to original game concepts like the Weapons. Both seem to have similar roles in protecting the planet and where the Weapons themselves act like the white blood cells of the body that is the planet to fight off infection like threats while the whispers may serve a different role in protecting the planet. This could also explain Sephiroth's connection to them in since he seems to have some relationship to them but not full control over how they act and who they protect. At this point in the original game Sephiroth’s actual body (what is left of it) is stuck in materia in the lifestream. This proximity to the lifestream may be how he is exerting some sort of control over things like the whispers. If the whispers are a part of the lifestream then it could be possible Sephiroth is infecting the planet and trying to use these natural defenders against the planet itself to further his own goals but he can’t completely stop them from trying to protect certain aspects of the planet like how a whisper stopped Aerith from falling from the balcony in the church escape scene. Beyond story aspects I’m interested in how gameplay features will carry over to the additional remake sequels. Do you think any save importing feature will be implemented? I doubt they would let us carry over end game materia, equipment, or levels for balancing reasons but it would be nice to be able to have something that we accomplished in this game come through to the next game. Also considering we are on the verge of a new console generation I’m interested to see how this remake series handles the transition.

Chase Klein

So my wild speculations and theories for whats coming next: - In the alternate timeline where Zack lives, I think he joins up with Avalanche instead of Cloud. I think in the ending when they show that Biggs survived and is in the orphanage house is part of this alternate timeline, its because Zack was able to save them all (being an actual first class soldier and all). Likewise, my guess is that Jessie and Wedge also survived because of Zack. (They may even have a KH2 Roxas/Sora-like section in the next game where you control Zack for a chapter or something) - In addition to the above, I think they'll also really make you hate Cloud in the alternate timeline because he never had to fill Zack's shoes and he'll act pretty wimpy and unsure of himself. They may even kill him off in the Sector 7 Plate drop (wild speculation). - I also don't know how they'll implement it, but I think every game will end with an encounter with Destiny/Sephiroth similar to this first one, but each time adding a little more to the mystery. PS. 'Due Recompense' (the dubstep version of the Oppressed) is a friggan banger!

Damon

I found myself overwhelmed by Aerith’s impending doom. I essentially sobbed throughout the entirety of chapter 8 because I was falling for her but also know that she is toast.

AnotherRobot

Square is going to release a $14.99+in-game purchases mini-game collection on mobile for the Golden Saucer portion of the game. Additionally, they will release virtual pets of Moogles on mobile for $7.99+in-game purchases and Red XIII as DLC for $10.99. I'm sorry, but it's going to happen.

Dennis M.

What scenes are you most looking forward to in the next games? For me, it's Barret's backstory culminating in the fight against Dyne on the scrapyard. Dyne's suicide was very emotional in the original, I really hope they won't tone it down.

Dylan Ratcliffe

Hey Guys, My friend is super interested in playing FF7Remake, he's already order the Steelbox edition. Over the past two weeks, he had been playing the original for the first time before he encountered a bug around Cosmo Canyon, ending his play-through (us bad boys up in Canada playing on emulators). Since he hasn't really experienced the full game, should he play the Remake? I feel like he needs to experience the original before the remake, but I know he is super pumped to jump into this beautiful remake. As far as I know, he only knows that the remake focuses on the Midgar section, which he has played through, so he thinks he safe (so naive). Keep up the great content, Cheers, Dylan

Fred Dinovo

Howdy, I truly think the people participating in the Deepest Dive had the best experience with the Whispers.  We perceived them as this meta layer of "the fans trying to force the game to play the same" when in reality they were fate. The only reason we saw them as this meta concept was that we knew the story of the game, those who hadn't played the original wouldn't see them as harbingers of the past. I don't think this would have been as cool of a revelation without the discussion on this Deepest Dive, so thank you all for that. PS: Cait Sith made no sense to put him there, Reeves was in the SAME BUILDING does he just like playing with his puppets? Or didn't want to get up from his VR rig to look out the window?

Barrett Boswell

Hey gang, do we like the way the summons are represented in this game and how they are actually summoned? I loved how we had to fight to earn many of our summons, much like Final Fantasy VIII, but I wish their ability to be summoned wasn't so restrictive once earned. Maybe they can bring back summoning them through MP but it could take half or all your MP to summon them as a balance so it's not spammed. PS: Summon Bahamut in Hell House fight to hear the announcers make comments about him. Thank you all for, hands down, the best FFVII Remake analysis out there! No one else came close.

Scobu

I'm wondering how they are going to do the midgar zolom scene in Part 2. In the original, these giant serpents would just slaughter your party every time you tried to fight one and you eventually had to take a chocobo to run past them. One of my favorite scenes of the original game was coming up on the midgar zolom after crossing the swamp and seeing a giant tree speared through it indicating that Sephiroth had been here. This was a great example of foreshadowing and showing the gap between your party's strength and Sephiroth. I was really looking forward to seeing how they would present this scene, but unfortunately I don't think that it will have the same effect now. Since at the end of the Part 1 you end up basically killing the embodiment of fate itself and already went toe-to-toe with Sephiroth. So why would your party be afraid of a big snake?

Sun Jae Lee

One thing I was interested in was how there was a point early on when the one of the regular soldiers recognize Cloud's sword. Guessing from the original game, I thought that they are maybe thinking of the Buster Sword as Zack used to wield it. That made me wonder if Aerith would have recognized the sword as Zack's too when Cloud and Aerith first bumped into each other. It also made me wonder whether having the Buster Sword equipped when they meet again in the church in the remake has any difference in their interaction or any story development in the future? Aerith in the remake seems to hint at almost sensing what's coming for her future, even moreso than I remember her doing in the original - do you think she will be playing that up even more through the future installments of the remake? Almost as a guide for Cloud through the story?

The Hashtagonist

Now that "all bets are off" in the FF7 Game Universe I have a feeling that showing Zack alive at the end won't influence the next game much, but is merely a cheeky setup for a "what if" spin-off or perhaps even a sequel to Crisis Core? I'm very excited going into the story and never being sure what will happen. What does the panel think the odds are that Square is gonna sprinkle in a little "Life is Strange" and start experimenting with different branches in their story telling? Can't wait for the show!
