Back in March we celebrated the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons by kicking off The Deepest Dive with Ana Diaz, Sarah Podzorski, and Kelsey Lewin. After two discussions we parted ways, promising to reunite when the world needed us...

This week we're back with a bonus discussion! On Wednesday we'll be posting The Deepest Dive all about what we've been doing on the island in the months since the last episode, the ins and outs of the stalk market, and how the game has aged.

Submit a comment below for us to read on the show about your thoughts on the game since the last discussion. One comment only, please. The more specific the comment the better.

You can catch up on The Deepest Dive for Animal Crossing by watching the first discussion right here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9z3bgRIGoU

Thanks so much, everybody!

It is crazy how much terraforming has changed the game. I originally fell into the camp of not wanting to use terraforming because I was happy with my natural island, but that quickly went by the wayside once I got my hands on it. I've probably spent about 40 hours on terraforming alone now.

Hey guys! I am still absolutely loving ACNH, even though some of its flaws have become more apparent over time. I'll mention a Low and a High. The Low: Why does Crazy Redd only show up like once a week, and you're restricted to one piece of art per day even if you visit another town? It's going to take forEVER to do that art gallery, it's insane. (Though I did get a painting as a gift from a villager, which is cool, but has only happened once.) The High: Celeste is probably my new favorite Animal Crossing NPC. I love her. I didn't know the star shards would change over time, so I was so stoked when there were Taurus shards on the beach after April 20. My favorite part of it all is that Celeste tells you stories about Greek Mythology if you bring her the astrological furniture pieces. She even mentions how Zeus has "trouble with boundaries," which is a family-friendly but hilariously-aware method of dealing with those themes.

Am...am I a fake ass gamer boy? How do people come up with these elaborate island designs? Every time I go on any social media there is something even more impressive posted. Do you all feel inspired or discouraged when you see other's creations? To be clear I do love this game, after all I managed to get Raymond on my island by sheer chance.

I had to cut myself off from this game. It's a fantastic game and I loved playing it. But I've accomplished so much since I put it down. I still log on every now and then but I've been spending more time doing what I consider productive things. I wonder if others have had to force similar cutbacks upon themselves??

Mason Cowell

Hey all! Welcome back! I finally got my island to a 5 star rating last weekend and got my first Lily of the Valley to grow and it's easily my favorite accomplishment so far. What about you? What part of your island are you most proud of?

Don Heichert

I've put in 150+ hours so far and basically have my island the way I want it. I don't understand why you can't start from scratch with another island if you use a second profile? I'd love to start over without deleting my current island/profile. Any thoughts on why Nintendo made this decision?!

Hey gang welcome back! Internet discussions around New Horizons have really brought to light the tight rope that the developers have to walk between "it's the Animal Crossing way" and "play this game however you want." There's no shortage of fans demanding for a wide range of updates, mostly to speed up the game. The argument against most of these is usually something along the lines of "That's just Animal Crossing." Which camp do each of you fall under for the following requests? Would you want: The ability to craft in bulk? The option to choose which villager moves out? To pick your native fruit and flowers? Option to skip previously read dialogue? An unbreakable tier of tools?

JakeTwitchin

What quality of life updates do you think are missing, and which would you like to see implemented first? Crafting multiple items at once is at the top of my list

I’d love to hear what everyone’s favorite villager is now that we’re a couple months out

Call me insane: I've played 300+ hours and kinda have mixed feelings! The amount of creative freedom really stresses me out. I'm barely looking at other people's work online - just fighting this constant internal artistic battle with myself, my messy island and my damn limited inventory space! Honestly miss the first couple weeks when things were simple... when you had to sell fruit to make a bell and you'd go fishing for fun... Now I'm infinitely wealthy, thanks to friend's stalk prices, and don't have time to fish when I'm re-terraforming areas over and over! The game started on a peeerfect note by giving you less than you had Day 1 on Gamecube... but shortly they ramp up your customisation powers way too quickly for my liking and there are some definite economic imbalances (ie I'm no longer inclined to hunt for the money rock or cool bugs with my stupid turnip bank balance). I am loving the game, really, but I'm especially looking forwarding to finishing design work so I can kick back, enjoy the cozy atmosphere and go fishing for fun again. I know I'll be checking in all year to see the seasons change. Can't wait to listen :)

if you have fruit power you dont want anymore, pooping on a toilet makes it go away

Hey all! What mechanic do you wish the game had more explicitly explained? I didn't realize you could add things to your Nook Shopping catalog by picking them up until somebody explained it to me. It's really helped with my compulsive attempts to collect everything, and it helps me spend all my Bells too! Was this just something I didn't know as somebody new to Animal Crossing? Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

After rolling the credits during the K.K. Slider performance, I gave myself license to time-travel to ease the burden of waiting for villager homes and shops to move. I figured if I can build mountains and rivers in minutes, the game's concept of "real-time" was compromised. So I compromised. If I benefit from additional fossils, art, and cash in the process, I'm okay with that. I'm thinking of adding "players" so I can build more houses to populate my island. The bottom third has nothing but flowers and the remnants of some pixel art I did, so I'm hoping the homes will provide visual appeal. Flowers. I despise them. I have so many, and they are all in my way. I can't terraform anything unless I dig them up. It's causing a lot of additional work and motivation problems for me. Sam Claiborn of IGN likened the game to "checking email." Sadly, he isn't wrong. Without design inspiration, I play for 30 minutes to get my chores done then bounce.

Hey friends! I wanted to talk about the impact this game has had on my friends and family. I have had a handful of people who specifically picked up a Switch just to play this game, and a few have since ended up putting in over a hundred and fifty hours each! I have loved how our conversations have been dominated by this game and how people I've never talked with about games are now asking about getting fish or how to upgrade their homes. I have been helping them decorate their islands and come up with themes and it has been some of the most fun I've ever had! For example, I have been helping one of my friends come up with an idea for a playground/lounge area on her island. Helping her get a jacuzzi and figuring up what to put where and what looks good together, while also cleverly using the terraforming to enhance things is a blast. As someone who didn't have many friends who gamed growing up, I never got to share that excitement with people. Animal Crossing has allowed me to do that and it is wonderful!

Brian W

I don’t know if I trust Nintendo to listen to feedback and implement quality of life improvements. I feel like their release schedule is going to remain whatever it was planned at launch. Much like Animal Crossing, Nintendo is a slow and steady.

My favorite moment in the game happened after the other episodes of Deepest Dive, so I wanted to tell the story of what it's like to celebrate your birthday in Animal Crossing. They really go out of their way to make it feel special. When you start playing that day, your most veteran villager is standing outside your house and says they have to show you something. When you get there, your three oldest villagers turn on the lights and surprise you with one of their houses fully decorated with streamers, balloons, cupcakes, and a piñata. They're all dressed to the nines, and seeing Al the gorilla in a white formal suit with a top hat was a real treat. You then get a stack of cupcakes you can go around and share with your villagers, who act all flustered and give you presents they clearly just came up with on the spot. I was expecting a letter from Mom or a little gift in the mail or something, but it was this elaborate sequence that felt genuinely nice. There's something about the charm of Animal Crossing where describing it makes it sound lame as hell, but in practice it was magical. Just wanted to share because I figured not everyone would have seen the birthday sequence by now!

Bdun912

For what felt like weeks, I lived in a landfill trying to spawn and then correctly time catching a fly for my dumb museum. Did anyone else struggle with this? Or what fish or big did you struggle with?

Hey Y’all, It’s a small change, but I wish there was a user-friendly way of journaling in the game. There are so many beautiful areas and leisure spots— finding a scenic bench at sundown only to pull out your phone and check Nook Miles/designs/etc. feels a little empty. It would be so interesting to have the option of writing/journaling on the Nookphone, and would be a natural iteration on the ‘sending letters’ system. I could totally imagine people down the line finishing novels, a year of journal entries, etc. if given the choice. Typing and drawing on the phone is so quick now— there’d have to be a way for this to be user friendly with the switch, right?

I find the game to be still as enjoyable and charming as ever. I wish the content drops were a little bit more substantial and frequent but that is hard to do with COVID. My favorite part of the game continues to be the small details in the sound design. Hearing how each door has a different knocking sound, or listening to the rain hit a tin roof, or how different shoes make different sounds on the various surfaces. I feel like I am still discovering little details like that all the time. A lot of love was poured into this game and it is easy to tell

Hey all, My partner and I have been enjoying New Horizons together but separately. She's easily clocked in 150+ hours to my best guess to my measly 55+ hours. And that's the beauty of it I think, there's no pressure from anyone or the game to go balls to the wall and grind. I don't think I could say the same for Stardew Valley, especially early game. I love both games to death but Stardew always brought this sense of urgency to get as much as possible done in the day, while Animal Crossing is more like "You do you, boo boo". It's definitely something everyone needs right now. That being said, I wish there were more small quality of life changes implemented into the game, and I hope Nintendo implements them. 1. I would love if they implement a visual tile/grid system for placement outside of your house design. I can never truly understand if there is a grid system in place or I feel like I waste time trying to perfectly place things. 2. Please let us bulk craft. If I need 50 fences or whatever, let me build it them in one go. Don't make me build 5 sets of 10 individually. 3. I love the Dodos, I truly do. BUT, there is so much dialogue as a wall between getting connected to the internet and even local play. I understand it's probably a feature to keep in mind the battery life for the Switch, but it should be a simple menu in like a kiosk rather than a full conversation with one of the Dodos. Again, most of my complaints are nit-picky quality of life changes. I still enjoy the day to day and it was a welcome surprise since I bounced hard off of New Leaf when I tried it years ago.

Hey all. So I just wanna start off my saying that I’m not sure if I have a personality prone to addiction or not, but the Stalk Market makes me think that I do. I told myself after I paid off my final home loan that I didn’t need nips that next week. I lied to myself. But in all honesty, the desire to change my island layout adds great incentive to continue to find the best prices week after week for selling. Maybe I have a problem. Idk. Thanks crew! Ps- where in the crap are the DIYs for the ironwood dresser and cutting board. I just want my ironwood kitchenette!

majj

I still find myself playing every day as I have since launch. But I’ve hit a bit of a wall with it, in that I have accumulated so much stuff that I no longer have room in my house and I don’t have any drive to do inventory management. I have some big ideas for what I want to do with my island, but the idea of going all in with terraforming and buying things and organizing just seems overwhelming. I will still keep playing it but at this point I’m really just going for the ultimate end game: getting Bob the cat on my island.

Jeorin

I'm 250 hours played for AC and I just unlocked a new phone feature today: The Nook Shopping app. It allows you to shop the catalog from your phone. It's pretty amazing to think even months after release and tons of playtime I'm still unlocking new stuff (that isn't just event related). Other than that, Crazy Redd is literally driving me crazy. I've only had him show up once more after his initial appearance. Given that there are over 40 works of art, at this rate I might have a completed museum by the year 2030. They definitely need to boost how often he shows up...

Prestonocron

I was looking forward to playing Animal Crossing as an escape from reality. In my real life I suffer from an awkward affliction that causes me to drop fruit on the ground instead of eating it. I also do the same thing with Medicine. Instead of taking it I just involuntarily drop it on the ground. So you can imagine my distress when playing Animal Crossing and the exact same thing happens. Man, I wish they'd swap around the options to 'eat' and 'drop'. Also Have you noticed how the music during the ceremony is really beautiful. It's really stirring. I start to get a bit choked up when that song plays and I'm surrounded by all my animal friends as we celebrate the opening of a new set of stairs.

I’ve almost just completely stopped playing it the last couple weeks. I lost interest mostly because people won’t come to my island, or I never get invited to someone else’s. So I haven’t been able to trade, shop at other stores, or any of the other stuff that comes with the social aspect of the game. And so I got bored with it. But then yesterday Felicia Day, gave her weekly reminder to buy them turnips, so I jumped back in I bought the turnips in hope that this week my time might finally come. I’m gonna try and bribe people online to come. Like for example, today my shop has the “Cute Bed” for sale, and already I know certain people out there definitely want it. So I’m gonna get on later and post a dodo code and see what happens. Lol I’ll update ya tomorrow morning on how it went! 😅

Two Button Crew

I wonder if I would not have fallen off the game if I owned it digitally. Popping in the cartridge just to do 15 minutes of island chores is an extra step that makes it a little less appealing.

Tim Lorow

What is the deal with collecting paintings? It seems that Redd only shows up maybe once a week and then there is a decent chance to get a fake. I’ve almost completely finished the fossil exhibits in the museum but it seems it will take many lifetimes to get anywhere on the art section. On the plus side we have a beach exhibit for all the fake art. It’s right next to the turtle death arena (complete with wrestling ring and cameras).

Tyler Carver

Okay what can I look forward to when it comes to bamboo DIY’s in the future? I just got the game about a week ago, and got my first bamboo shoots! Pandas and bamboo are kind of my schtick and my island is called Panda Land, so you can see where I am going with all this.

Hello islanders Now with all my friends having unlocked terraforming my favorite part of animal crossing has become getting tours of everyones island. Im suprised on how unique they all feel compared to earlier visits. Although the terraforming itself is tedious Its also cool to know how much time and work friends put into it! How deep have you all dived into remaking your whole island?

Daniel Willett Pine

I don't want to be negative, but I've completely fallen off since the Earth Day stuff. I really enjoyed the month or so of playing, but now it feels monotonous. A lot of my villagers repeat things I've heard dozens of times over, I can only buy one art piece every couple days and it is always fake. What is it that you guys keep getting from the game? Do I not feel joy? Thanks for the deepest dive, keep up the amazing work!

Thwip

This is my first game in the series and I'm shocked at how much I'm still enjoying it. I originally bought it because my wife wanted to play it, but she has now completely fallen off and I haven't missed a day of playing since release. I'm at over 215 hours and as of today we have a five star island. What I'm wondering is how you all are feeling about the game this many days in. Are you still playing daily? What's your hour count? And how do you think this game compares to others in the series?

Shawn Mills

How did you all feel about the credits rolling after KK Slider comes? It felt anticlimactic to me since he came when I only had 9 villagers but his performance was fun and his version of the main theme was delightful.

MickManga

Over a month in and I have come to love the ability to redesign my character whenever. In older games I use to make multiple characters and have them move out when I had a new idea for a character to play as. Now I just walk over to mirror and just like that I have a new character to play as. It's so handy cause every since Wild World my friends and I have always role played in animal crossing. Also the nintendo app is a godsend as it allows us to type faster.

Patrick Polk

This is my first Animal Crossing, and I have enjoyed it a lot and put a lot of time into it. Thanks for doing this Deepest Dive! One hidden interaction in this game sticks out to me as unlike anything else in the game--in the Able Sisters store Sable initially won't talk to you, but when you persistently talk to her every day she eventually opens up, and Sable and Mabel tell you their sad backstory about losing their parents and how they miss their sister Label since she left to try to become a designer. It was surprisingly moving and much more in depth than anything any other characters share with you. I wish there were more backstories like this that you can unlock for other characters. What dark secrets are Blathers and Celeste hiding???

Max Jahner

While I don't think being able to terraform your island is a bad idea, it's ended up hurting the game for me a bit? Almost as if there was too much I was able to do early on. In New Leaf the entire process was drip fed at a pace the kept me wanting more and where every addition to the island was kinda exciting because not a whole lot happened, but in New Horizons I dove in deep, spent 200 hours in the first couple months literally rebuilding the island from scratch, made more bells than I'll ever need because gaming the stalk market is so easy in 2020, and now I haven't touched the game in a couple weeks. I ultimately feel I didn't get to know any of my villagers as well as I did in New Leaf because I was constantly running around in construction mode.
