It doesn’t really surprise me that Mixer is dissolving due to its poor growth and performance, but I tend to wonder what the plan was to begin with?? They didn’t deliver on many of the promised features, and threw so much money on bringing big names over and now they’re just killing it. The timing seems odd since they could probably build some really cool integration features into the series x releasing soon and if they timed that with feature improvements in Mixer I bet it could be far more successful than it is now. But nope... Just makes me nervous about what their plan is with all the new developers they’ve also put under contract. What’s their plan for that? And could we see a future where they just say “yeah nah, this isn’t working out” and release all of those studios? Is this something to worry about for those smaller studios that are not financially independent? Or do you think these issues are unrelated and I’m just overthinking it? It just seems surprising to me when such large organizations don’t seem to think things through...

Hi Kyle, Ben, Suriel, and JeffM. Playing the Last of Us Part 2 I was very anxious for the opening of the game. And I started to think about memorable game openings that set me up for the game’s story/mechanics. Spider-Man’s launching you into swinging at the very start to take down Fisk is probably the most recently effective (aside from TLOU2 of course). Do you think more games will try and have more motivating openings? And what are some of your favourites?

Thomas Deranek

Hi MinnMax Crew, As always, thanks for keeping this show going. The announcement of Crash 4 got me thinking. Crash Bandicoot is a franchise started by Naughty Dog years ago that they moved on from, and its legacy has since been carried on by other developers. My question is this, what do you think is the likelihood that Naughty Dog's current IP (Uncharted and The Last of Us) receive a similar treatment 5, 10, 15 years from now. Will a franchise be handed off to Toys for Bob - or another studio - to be revitalized? Will either have several offshoot games that are not much like it but use the same world and characters? Also, can you think of any other franchises that have been left in a similar position and are currently or will be ripe for this series reprisal treatment from a totally new developer? Love the show! Hello! Let’s talk getting old! How do you think your relationship with video games will evolve as you get older? I’m 30 and have been playing video games as long as I can remember. As a kid I would have classified video games as a “fun” thing to do lumped into an entertainment bin with movies and sports. As I grew older it became a huge hobby. In middle school and high school it’s what I did with my friends, late night sleep overs, halo LAN parties, and midnight releases became a normal past time. Now far into adulthood I’ve really embraced my love for video games as part of my identity. I used to shyly tell people I’m a “gamer” based on it some time having a stigma as a childish past time. However now its very much part of who I am and I’m very proud of the community and experiences it has afforded me. I have a 2 year old so video games in my 30s seem like they are going to be split between introducing games to my children and seeing what they get interested in and carving out time at night to play things like the last of us and multiplayer titles with long time friends. Looking into the future I’m curious how this relationship with gaming will change in my 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond. Thanks for all you do!

Hey Ben and Crew. So, this is more of a PSA, but it should make life better for some gamers. I'm 42 years old, mostly play on Xbox One X and my reflexes are slowing down especially in first person shooters. My favorite game is Apex Legends, but I'm not great at it. I could never win the one on one battles when seemingly we'd start shooting at the same time. My aiming was horrible and even movement felt slower than it should have been. Folks, make sure the game mode is on in your TV display settings. Input lag???? Whatever. I'm here to tell you it's a real thing. I switched on game mode and the difference is night and day. I can actually aim. It also feels like I just got let out of quicksand. I feel like an idiot for wasting all this time. Check out the setting. You may just be able to keep up with your 10 year old now. Thanks and keep up the good work. You guys rock!

Mark Ramirez

Hey Ben and the CLC’s, last week you guys talked about Babe 2 and I was cracking up the whole time. Babe was a beloved classic in our family, so when we sat down to watch Babe 2 we were just staring at the tv in disbelief. After it was done my mother declared the movie was such an abomination it didn’t even deserve to be donated to the library, where it would scar other families, and promptly snapped the DVD in half and threw it in the garbage can. Thanks for sharing in the weirdness of that movie!

Hey MinnMax Crew, A lot of the conversation around the PS5 is how their custom SSD will remove load times or get rid of obvious level transitions for asset loading, but do you think this could have adverse effects for designers? Let’s take a game like Tomb Raider or Uncharted where you’re traversing an underground cave system, and those games typically have narrow spaces you have to shimmy through. These can obviously have benefits to loading the new area assets, but are we supposed to believe that now all future games with caves are just wide open spaces? We’ve already seen backlash to the UE5 demo when the character squeezed through a cave wall, and people called them out. They even had to come out and say that it was to ‘show detail close up’. I suppose I’m just concerned that now things that would make sense within a game’s level design (like the previous mentioned cave systems, or a collapsed building, or ancient ruins) could be met with player backlash that the dev team is ‘hiding load screens’ within these designs despite the touted SSD speeds. And knowing how some people love to be negative in the gaming community, I’m worried it’ll just have a negative effect. Hopefully I’m just overthinking it. Keep up the great work. With Sony introducing the digital edition of the PS5 and Microsoft already having the One S All Digital Edition, do you think at some point in the future we will ever be able to lend our digital licenses for games to friends for a limited amount of time?

Seth Parmer

Howdy Minnmaxers! This week I have a game for you all called “Will It Reveal Itself?” (Inspired by Michael Huber) Basically, I’m going to list a bunch of games that can potentially show up at Microsoft’s Event next month and it is up to the panel to say if it Will or Will Not Reveal itself. Here are the games: Fable 4 Elden Ring Banjo-Kazooie NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… Battlefield 6 Final Fantasy VII Remake (Part 1 or 2) Starfield Tales of Arise Call of Duty 2020 Shin Megami Tensei V Thanks!

Simple question/topic Apparently Bugsnax is inspired by, Bioshock, Dark Cloud and Viva Pinata (their words) what the hell is Bugsnax gonna be?

Lewis K

Hey team, At this point is there anything, feature-wise, that could realistically ever stop people buying a new console? I honestly think if the PS5 had zero backwards compat it truly wouldn’t matter. Similar with the XSX (cool acronym btw), they could bring back that dumb only one person per game rule and I think it wouldn’t even matter. These things surely just sell themselves at this point. Cheers, Lewis

Derin

Hey Minnmax! What are your thoughts on Pokemon Sword and Shield, now that we're more than half a year removed from its launch? The more I think about the game, the more underwhelmed I am by it. The designs for the new pokemon (especially the starters) and most of the music all were a little disappointing. I think I ended up enjoying Let's Go Eevee and Pikachu more than Sword and Shield, I'm sure nostalgia plays a big part in that though. Let's Go gen. 2 might have me more excited than an actual new mainline game at this point. Keep up the good work! Derin.

Juan M

Hey Ben and Jeffm and others, Thoughts on doing a boardgame podcast as part of MinnMax? Thanks! Juan from Seattle

Maybe Kyle?

Greetings Ben and crew, I have a Mortal Kombat 11 lore question that has been bothering me. I haven't played the campaigns in MK 9 or 10, so maybe the answer is there, but I even asked on social media to Ed Boon and NetherRealm studios but got no response. I am hoping you all can help me, so beware spoilers for the MK 11 story ahead. There is a point in the game were Raiden throw Geras into the Sea of Blood by wrapping him up in the chain of an anchor and then dropping the anchor. Geras mentions that "drowning cannot kill me" to which Raiden replies something along the line of "That is unfortunate for you. The sea of blood is bottomless, so you will fall forever" and then Geras is pulled over the side of the boat and into the Sea of Blood. With that background, here is my question: if the Sea of Blood is bottomless, why do the boats have anchors? Were these boats built for regular seas that have bottoms but are being used in the Sea of Blood? If so, how did they get there? Is there some sort of lock and dam system between the regular seas and the Sea of Blood to keep the blood out? If they were created just for the Sea of Blood, is the anchor there just to doom people to a purgatory of falling forever? Seems like a cinder block or two would do the job. Related, has there been a small, inconsequential detail in another game that for whatever reason, you just cannot let go? Thanks for all you do and keep up the great work! ~Kyle from Iowa

Hey Ben Jeffm Kyle and Suriel, now a days everything is getting remade or remastered. What are some games that you think need a remake or remaster that no one has thought of yet. If i had to pick 3 games i would say ssx tricky, dead space( any of em i just want some new dead space ), or fur fighters! I loved fur fighters as a kid and i feel like with a good sense of humor that game would be great to play today.

StillGotGame

Hey guys With the release of Last of Us Part 2, it got me thinking, are video games the only media that consistently seems to get better as the years pass? Games like Witcher 3, Red Dead 2, GTA 5 or even Breath of the Wild consistently top best of lists and we have little doubt that Cyberpunk or sequels to these games are likely going to exceed them. This isn't the same for books, music or movies where the passage of time and advances in technology haven't moved classics off the top. Is there any other media that you could say better technology and fresh ideas equates to a significant improvement in output? Television? Maybe Table Top Games

T1M3C0P

Hey Ben and his busy beavers. After playing Last of Us 2 (only chapter 1 so far) this weekend and falling in love with the guitar mechanic in it, it got me thinking more about the PS4 touch pad. Most games just use it as a giant button, but what game has actually made the best use of the touch pad as a touch pad? Keep up the great work.

Geoff Enright

Hello there CLC maxing traxxers! Hope all is safe and well, all things considered. Including to my nemesis, JeffM. How do you all feel about spoilers? And be specific. For example, I avoid 90% conversation, speculation and content about something I wish to consume prior to its release. For example, any kind of previews about movies, but I'll be a little more lax about video games since playing the game will also affect your decision. But i also think narrative content based on twists and surprises while fun will not have the same strength as a solid story. Ex: the sixth sense vs star wars new hope. If someone spoiled sixth sense I would lose more than if i was spoiled with a new hope, so the story and experience of new hope maintains I can get spoiled but won't have it ruined. -Geoff aka Groffles

AxeWieldingGoatMan

Hello you sexy cohorts, What are some of the best features that have been dropped from one console generation to the next? For instance my biggest disappointment with the Switch was that they were dropping Miiverse, which is a feature I really enjoyed. What are some of yours, if any. Thanks for the sexy content.

Thom Blackburn

Hi Ben and the 'horts, Here is something you haven't heard about in a while: Did any of you have "The Sega Channel"? I remember being infinitely jealous of anyone that had it. It seemed waaaaaaay ahead of its time considering how popular subscription models are becoming. Thanks, Thom from Seattle

Mark Cruz

Hello Kyle Hilliard of the gaming ride home podcast and friends, I almost posted this to the deepest dive *not a spoiler* so keep reading, My question is what is one video game oversight that has annoyed you in the past or still does to this day? My example! I live in Brooklyn and I do have an apartment to myself but there is people above me and below me. They talk so soo soo low in this game In comparison to the screeches of the clickers, runners , zombies. You are thinking this guy. So dumb. Lower the sound effects. Wrong. It’s dialogue that lowers the zombie screams. Sound effects lowers foot steps, gun shots stuff like that. But the screeches are in the same category as dialogue. 7 years to make a sh*t game. Just kidding also hello Ben I just wanted to help promote Kyle because he is a cool guy.

Brady Easter

Hey MinnMaxers! As always, thank you for all the content and for starting such a great community. Quick question: What is the smallest reason for which you decided to play a game? For example, I played Owlboy solely because of a song in the trailer. Thanks!

Jaime Victor Negrón-Serrano

Hello CLCs! Do y'all drink alcohol? If you do, what's your drink of choice? Also, do you like to drink while gaming?

Josh LaBaw

Hello OG CLC's, Lego Dimensions was the best toys to life game made. It was toys made into video games. Skylanders did ok for a while, but Skylanders weren't toys, they were statues. Why can cartoons make great toys and be very profitable there, but video games seem to just be another "toy" to the cartoon? P.S. I'm leaving Fortnite out of this. That is a phenomenon not a video game.

Ben

Hey guys not to be like a debbie downer hipster guy but have you ever been pushed away from a game by the effusive hyperbole? the latest cycle of silly hyperbole, paired with the very real reactionary backlash to the sexuality of the game's characters (and then the backlash to that where any critique was lumped into the reactionary loser camp) , has really burned me out pretty quickly with the disclaimer that I was pretty cool on TLOU 1 overall. Has the hype storm ever proven too much for your interest in a game? thanks

Tim Lorow

One thing I’ve come to terms with is that I will never ever finish my backlog. By my calculation, I would have to play at least 1,100 hours which would take me over a year based on my normal rate of 20 hours a week. That’s at a minimum - no side quests, no new games, no fun. It seems that the only way to deal with a backlog is to accept reality that it will never be completed.

Jackson Arnold

Hello cheek inspectors, I just started playing Styx: Shards of Darkness, and there was a wilhelm scream in the opening cinematic. I immediately turned the game off and uninstalled. What’s the pettiest reason you’ve ever stopped playing a game?

Dylan Kuzel

Hello fellow gamers! If you could snap one gaming franchise out of existence and not even feel bad about it one bit, what would it be? The more controversial the better! My picks would be Mortal Kombat or Sonic the Hedgehog.

Merlin Price

Yo my question/s is thusly stated: Now that we are a little further down the road is the minmax brand becoming an easier and more focused experience for you all? While keeping flexible is there a roadmap or an overall philosophy of growth?

Alex K.

Since Liscenced games were the focus of this weeks great GOTY hunt, I wanted to talk about one of my favorites, the Harry Potter and the chamber of Secrets that was developed by Griptonite Games . Unlike all other versions of this early harry potter game, the gbc port were developed as full fledged turn based RPG. Turn based combat with multiple party members, side quests, mini games, level up mechanics, summons. You name it. It also had a great sountrack (well for a gbc game) Battle music example > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q6nDCDHIvg&t=2422s

What are your favourite lesser known platformers? Mine are probably Brave: The Search for Spirit Dancer and TY the Tasmanian Tiger. Still surprised TY got a remaster/remake!

Doreen Ford

Although I know Kingdom Hearts isn't exactly fondly thought of on the MM Show (except for maybe Kyle) for me it has a huge emotional connection. Back in 2017 I was at one of the lowest points in my life but as I got back into video games through my (then new) partner I re-discovered Kingdom Hearts (especially 2). Although very basic, the themes of friendship, connection and feelings resonated and reminded me of something I needed at the time, that there was good wholesome things in the world and that I could still smile and laugh. This made me think, what's a game that you have an emotional connection with? And especially if it got you through a tough time in your life but either way no need to go into specifics if you don't feel comfortable. As always, thanks for this wonderful show!

Nick Novotny

After letting the PS5 event sink in for a bit, I kept thinking about the innovations we saw in the Ratchet and Clank demo. The concept of having minimal load times seem to open doors for new innovations in the game industry, but will third party companies be stifled by Microsofts approach of having everything play on the current gen? Does this prevent third party game companies from innovating on game play mechanics? The Series X will have a great resolution, and frame rate, but what happens when you want to push the number of assets on screen, or get creative with load times, like we saw in Ratchet and Clank? At what point does it effect the way someone wanted their game to work? How would the older systems handle some of these technical advances, or does it prevent them from doing it at all? Thanks! - Nick Novotny

Some Random Guy

Good day Gentlemen, I have a story I wish to share about the time I battled against the secret true final boss in Octopath Traveler. I'll try to keep it brief, but essentially this is what happened. I had made it to the second phase of the fight, struggling to keep myself alive. the enemy and I were both on our last legs. I had spent the last 2 turns preparing for the attack that would end it all, and as I was gearing up to strike the decisive blow and win the battle that at this point had lasted nearly an hour... the merchant I brought along, for the sole purpose of buffing my party mind you, stole the killing blow with a measly 230 damage! if that wasn't bad enough, to add insult to injury, he didn't even stick around and ended up leaving the party in the middle of the results screen! (as I wasn't able to capture video, here are some screenshots of the results screen both before and after the ignoramus ran off: https://twitter.com/SomeRandomGuyOO/status/1166268385803423744) Which brings me to my question: What are some absolutely unforgettable moments that you have experienced while playing a game that would be nearly impossible for you to replicate

Tactical Dreamer

Hello, What are some of the indies you've most looking forward to? I have a massive list of upcoming indies I'm excited for, but at the top of that list are Gestalt: Steam and Cinder, Morvid: The Seven Acolytes, and Star Renegades. Thanks!

Adonys Perez

Hello Ben and the cohorts, Been thinking about the last of us HBO adaptation and my thoughts used to be why is this needed? So much of what makes the story great is the interactive elements and immersive experience which pulls you into to this world in a way only a video game can. But then it had me thinking back when the first game came out and how I wished I could have shown my dad the story all the way through because he loves gritty western/western-inspired story telling and the turns it takes and the shock of the ending would've been somethings he'd appreciate. I don't think all the cutscenes are designed to tell the story by themselves but no way I could ever have sit through a playthrough of a 30 hour game let alone have him play the games himself. My hopes now are that this adaptation does the story justice and that I'm able to show my dad just how special TLOU was. So my question for y'all is which video game story would you choose to adapt either as a movie/tv show in order for a friend or loved one who doesn't play video games can experience it ? (assuming this adaptation will do the story the justice it deserves and setting aside the history of bad video game adaptations) Bonus if you can say who you would show it to! Thanks for the show! (been following most of y'all since the gameinformer days and even remember when Ben first got hired but this is my first time writing in ;b )

Shuffleguy

Dear Ben and the Gaming Clan, How would you compare the strength of console exclusives from Nintendo and Sony (RIP Microsoft) in the general audience? Sony puts their exclusivity right at the top of the box, while Nintendo games don't really do that. Are Nintendo games so much stronger and familiar than Sony exclusives, or is it something more (like the artstyle perhaps)? Stay healthy, Shuffle

InstagramExpert

Hello Ben and the Hansons, i was wondering what you guys think of the user reviews of the last of us part II, i finished the game and i think its my favorite game of all time. I was very suprised to see it has a 4,3 score given by user reviews. I was wondering what you guys think of the situation. I think the majority of the people read the leaks and thought this sucks and i hate it and are unwilling to change their opinion now, maybe ? What do you guys think? Zexirium from the Netherlands!

Rory Sublett

Hello friends! My question for everyone this week might bring up some unpopular opinions, people love those! What I would like to know is, what are some games that everyone else seems to love, but you just can’t get yourself into. Personally, I’ve never really got into the Uncharted series, The Last of Us, or Horizon Zero Dawn, despite many attempts at playing them.

Fred Dinovo

Howdy crew! You're all a podcast right? Probably listen to a few as well I'm guessing. What is something you've bought that was advertised on a podcast (not your own)? I ended up subscribing to Blue Apron for a couple months and own a couple pairs of MeUndies Enter code ThanksForReading!

Jason Wojnar

Hi Friends, I am loving the Last Of Us Part II so far, but so much of its design reminds me of all the things I loathed about Uncharted 4, a game many recognize as the best in the series but that I sincerely believe is the weakest for reasons too plentiful to point out here (but most of it boils down to pacing and a drawn-out introduction). Are there any franchises you like where you strongly disagree with what many fans consider to be the most celebrated entry? I also don't want to sound like I'm hating on UC4, it is still great.

Rickfromatlanta

Hey crew, what are your thoughts on the upcoming release of fight crab? Is there a type of fighting game that is of the wall you would like to see? Maybe untitled goose fighting game? Thanks for all you do everyday.

PseudonymousJoe

While watching the nominations for the community top 10 3d platformers roll in, I was shocked and amused at some of the games that came up. My hypothesis is that 3d platformers were a lot of people's introduction to games, which results in massive nostalgia for otherwise unremarkable titles. What mediocre games of the past 5 or so years do you think will inspire massive nostalgia a couple decades from now?

Sean Mason

Hey Ben and the Crew! I’m sure you have seen everything on Twitter the other day about Steve Butts and Tal Blevins. Mitch Dyer made a big thread about how abusive the pair were with employees and how they forced false claims into one of his articles about Amy Hennigs departure from Naughty Dog, stating that Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley forced her out. Just wondering if you ever had any dealings with these two (Butts and Blevins). Video games media seems like a mess these days and stuff like this just keeps coming out. Would love to hear your thoughts. -Sean from Bridgewater, Massachusetts

Hey Minnmaxxers Do you still own the first piece of videogame hardware you interacted with? My first interaction was with the Sega Pico and unfortunately it was taken when our van was towed. I keep wanting to rebuy it but have yet to pull the trigger.

Guy Incognito

What's something where context/association makes or breaks something for you? Metal is the dorkiest genre of music, but goddamn Guilty Gear music gets me pumped! Without that association, I definitely would not be listening to those soundtracks.

Mike Vogt

Hello MinnMax! What are your individual picks for the single greatest video game sound effect of all time? My pick is classic Doom's super shotgun.

Jake Z

Hey guys, I know the The Last of Us Part 1 has received substantial criticism for its combat. I don't remember not enjoying it, but it never stuck with me as anything special. However, The Last of Us Part 2's combat has been as thrilling and frenetic as Doom Eternal's combat for me, with that constant feeling that you're on the brink of death and you miraculously make it out alive. I really didn't expect to like it this much. What do you think of it?

Thomas Hoster

Hey MinnMax, do any of you dabble in Trading card games or did you in the past? Recently I have gotten back in to Yu-Gi-Oh! Via the switch game and playing it against a friend in tabletop simulator. Boy have things changed. I played back as a kid when there were just very basic strategies and now the game has evolved so much. But it’s still fun to have that learning aspect mixed with nostalgia.
