Wearing a mask is cool, especially when it helps prevent the spread of a deadly virus. What are the best masks in gaming?

Hey MinnMaxers, As a kid, I once played a game on the DreamCast for about 6 hours because I was waiting for a save point. Incredulous that I hadn't found one, I decided to just pause it and leave the game on overnight. Lo and behold, it turned out there was save option on the pause screen that I had consistently overlooked previously. My question is, what's the silliest or most dumb mistake you've made while playing a game?

Hey Jeffum, I bounced off red dead 2 just around the Saint Denis section and I'm getting back into it because it's on gamepass. I'm only doing story and a few side missions, join my 3 mission a week "snails journey through Red Dead 2"

Question for y'all: Am I the only one who finds HDR amazing but also frustratingly inconsistent? Some games look incredible (Doom Eternal, Modern Warfare, etc), some games it doesn't do much of anything (RDR2 -even post patch it's not great) and sometimes it just makes things look worse. What gives?

Hello Ben and crew! Let's play a little game called "The Price is Right – Video Game Items Edition"! Below is a list of eight video game items, the games in which they appear and the currency required to purchase them in the game. The panel has to guess the price of the item in that game. Price Is Right rules: whoever gets the closest to the actual price without going over wins the round. Item: Fire Materia Game: Final Fantasy VII Remake Currency: Gil (Price: 500) Item: Cinnamon Bunny Game: Undertale Currency: Gold (Price: 25) Item: Skeleton Suit Game: Super Mario Odyssey Currency: Coins (Price: 9,999) Item: Horse Reviver Game: Red Dead Redemption 2 (fortunately JeffM is not on the podcast this week - would've been too easy for him) Currency: Dollar (Price: 9.50) Item: Shotgun Game: Resident Evil 4 Currency: Pesetas (Price: 20,000) Item: 10 Arrows Game: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Currency: Rupees (Price: 20) Item: Crescent Axe Game: Demon's Souls Currency: Souls (Price: 10,000) Item: Nintendo Switch Game: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Currency: Bells (Price: 29,980) Greetings, Dennis M.

Hello Ben, Ana, Leo, and Jacob. First I'd like to recommend Bioshock 2 as a potential future deepest dive. Anyways I like getting achievements and I've done some pretty outrageous things just to see and hear that little notification pop up. Example one: I once stayed up late into the night replaying the same checkpoint over and over again in Gears of War 2 for the Seriously 2.0 achievement which requires you to kill 100,000 enemies across the whole game. Example two: I left my Xbox on while I was at work so a bot would play matches against me in Gears of War 3 for the Seriously 3.0 achievement which requires you to acquire all 65 onyx medals which ultimately has you play 18,000 matches. So my question is what's the craziest thing you've done for an achievement or trophy?

COHORTS! If you still had a MySpace, who (or what) would be in your Top 8?

Grizzled Gaming

I asked this back in December, but since we have a whole new crew of people this go round, I thought it'd be a good time to ask again. Also Ben, I'd love it if we could get your answer this time. In the spirit of getting better and self-reflection, who has been the most influential person in your career up to this point?

Jacob Schmidt

Hey CLCs. After a pretty stressfu week I decided to start playing Crackdown 3. Is it good? No. But it is a pretty big open world with trivial combat and 1000s of collectables. It ended up being exactly the kind of mindless entertainment needed after a crazy week. My question is, whats a game you played that you know isn't great, but because of your experience surrounding the game you ended up actually enjoying it? Thanks!

Ashton

Hey everyone! First things first, WELCOME LEO! Alright, so a few years ago I was listening to some old Mega64 podcasts from the distant year of 2014, and they were hosting a community contest for a pre-roll YouTube ad. They were announcing the first place winner, when all of a sudden I hear “LEO VADER, YOU ARE THE WINNER.” I had to do a double-take and go back to make sure I heard correctly, and my ears weren’t playing tricks on me. It really was the same Leo that had just joined GI and was already one of my favorites. I thought it was so peculiar that I just happened to stumble upon that since Leo was still relatively new at GI. I already knew Leo was a fan because of his Charm shirt he loves (I have one too, baby boy.) They weren’t wrong either, it really was one of the best submissions. So, my question for you all is: Have you ever won a contest, local or not? What was it for and what did you win? Thanks, guys, and welcome again, Leo!

What constitutes a video game classic? Does it have to be a revolutionary video game, or is it just a successful iteration on common themes/mechanics that already exist?

Chree McGee

Hey Leo Vader and the rest! I've finally finished listening to your excellent The Last of Us 2 Deepest Dive, and I really think it's the best, most thorough discussion of TLOU2 on the internet, and you can quote me on that. I wanted to say, in your conversation on the game, you guys (and others online that I have seen) had arguably minor hang-ups about the story in the end (no spoilers), but I wanted to ask you all something. Does any other game compare in terms of pure literary ambition to The Last of Us Pt. 2? Could any other game warrant a ten plus hour conversation (such as yours) that seemed to focus mainly on story elements? The only one that compares that comes to my mind would be Red Dead Redemption 2. I feel like the debates and disagreements on the meaning and message of the game are similar to ones you would hear about an Oscar-caliber movie, or a Pulitzer prize-winning book. Can you think of any other games that meet this standard?

Jerry Young

Hello MinnMax! After finishing Last of Us Part II i dove into ghost of Tsushima. Later that day, I found myself going back to watch the 2018 e3 gameplay demos. It was a cool experience to see something like the standoff mechanic in Ghost before knowing what it was at all. Have you had any experiences going back and looking at old e3 footage or demos after playing the released game that stands out? Whether it be the game being significantly different or very similar?

The_Smak

Hello fellow cohorts, What video game enemy has induced the most anxiety for you? For me it was always the crimson heads from Resident Evil Remake. As soon as you see one running at you full speed you know you need to either fight it or get the heck out of there. However, the mere sight of them always causes me to panic. Thanks everybody

Cade Mead

Hi, everyone! What makes for better music in games? Chiptunes or orchestral scores? Ignoring the number of soundtracks that aren't one or the other for brevity's sake. I noticed myself not noticing modern scores in games, then listening to them later on YouTube or Spotify and realizing I nearly overlooked great music. On the flip side, chiptune tracks are impossible to ignore and just wall to wall with earworms. Much love!

Recently a college professor offered to send me a book by Kate Bornstein called Gender Outlaws cause she had an extra copy or two. She then surprised me by sending me it *as well as* another version, a graphic novel on queer history and a collection of short stories by Ted Chiang. What's the nicest thing/surprise you've ever gotten by mail?

Hunter Sax

Hello Friends, Special hello to Jacob Geller and shoutout to his dad Jeff Cork. I just started playing through the Bioshock series for the first time. Boy howdy, they're good games, I feel a fool for being so late to them. What's the latest you've been to a game and it still holds up? Also everyone should watch all of Jacob Geller's videos.

Geoff Enright

Hey Crew and Nemesis JeffM, Here's hoping all is well with you, and keep up betterquesting. So many new IP, and excellent games of this current generation. I'd throw my vote towards God of War 2018, but does it count as new IP? How does a game qualify? If the mainline story has concluded, the game's theme is completely different, the game play mechanics are presented differently...I mean does this count? If some of the only similarities between the previous incarnations and the new are the overall genre and main character, is that enough? Looking forward to your thoughts on the subject! - Geoff aka Groffles

IanTClark

If you’re anything like me - and I know I am - you think 2017 was the best year for video game releases. 2020 is turning out to be a banger with FF7R, TLOU2, Ghost, and all the other huge games coming out in the fall. Could this be the 2nd best year ever? Name a better one. I’ll hang up and listen to your answers.

Max Jahner

It came up in community questions last week that some of you mostly play a little bit of a lot of games to stay current. I'm curious: how do you decide when it's time to move on from a game? Alternately, how do you decide you want to go all in and finish a game you'd only dabbled with? I feel like my access to games has exploded over the years. Because I've written games off only to fall in love with them later I have a very hard time completely moving on from anything. Is there, like... A games journalist sense? This queue of mine needs some *hard cuts,* but it just keeps getting longer.

G-Max Thoeren

Hey MinnMax crew, and welcome Leo! Was wondering if you guys had any insight into why there are some topics people are super willing to "turn their brain off" regarding. For example, any comparison of a game to Dark Souls will result in massive amounts of hate, independent of how merited the comparison is. The other day, someone on Resetera compared Shin Megami Tensei to Dark Souls, and was of course descended upon by angry gamers. However, I thought their comparison was quite well-founded, saying about SMT: "It's not there to guide you, it asks that you figure things out for yourself and choose how things should go, and to be strong enough to see it through to the end." To me, the Dark Souls comparison refers to a type of difficulty that harkens back to the NES-era, predicated on memorization rather than twitch reflexes, and is a useful touchstone for difficulty in the same way that Assassin's Creed is for open worlds and Uncharted is for storytelling. Another example is that people on the internet seems to take it as a given that "game journalists" are paid off by critics to give games good scores, when in my recollection there has been (1) recorded instance of something like this, which resulted in massive fallout and the formation of Giantbomb. Why do large numbers of otherwise smart and rational people have such strong emotional reactions to seemingly innocuous topics and "turn their brain off?"

Sincerly, Eric

Hello! When playing RPGs do you all have go to Names for your characters or, is there go to names you like to use for your Pokemon or Towns? Thanks, Hope everyone is having a good Summer so far.

Bob Buel

Hey howdy hey! What game did you have the hardest time finding or was so rare you had to hunt down in one way for another?

Thomas Hoster

Hey Minnmax so far I’m really enjoying Ghosts of Tsushima. I’ve always wanted a dedicated samurai game like this. I’ve really been trying to role play a wandering samurai as I’m playing through the first part of the game. Just doing the more side quest content and rarely doing any stealth. I really enjoyed the calm Jin from Samurai Champloo and I guess that’s somewhat what I want to play out. So far though I have been wishing the local AI/towns were just a bit more. I understand this is a product of the current invasion but do you think this is something we could see more in a sequel? Maybe going further to give even more of samurai role play the way red dead 2 gave you the cowboy role play gameplay? Thanks for all the great content!

Jeff (GazpachoManRandyCabbage)

Hey hey hey, 2 of my favorite things y'all worked on back at GI were the Smashed documentary and the podcast on the inside story of the voice work for Metal Gear Solid. I know these aren't exactly one-to-one projects, but both were super engaging, edited, narrative documentary style projects. At MinnMax, do you have any plans of doing similar projects in the future? A feature-length documentary style or 2PP docu-series type project? Thanks and keep on dooooin the bartman. Jeff

Question for Ben: Could you talk a little more about your involvement with the videos for UMN'S engineering department? I'm a mechanical engineering student right now at the U and im just generally interested in your experience with that. Maybe you could even toss those currently recording lectures some advice since everything is online at the moment. (Trying to get a mechanical measurements lab to work online has been an interesting experience to say the least) Semi-related note: I really miss the U of M campus, beautiful place. Thanks!

RevRando

Hey Guys, Do you think Nintendo will ever release N64 and GameCube titles on the switch like they have with the NES and SNES? Why do you think they seem so hesitant to release their classic games? Thanks!

Kyle Silva

Hey Ben Bomb and the Immunity Idols. Earlier this week, a modder showed off his work in making Super Mario 64 compatible with Xbox's Kinect. The results are pretty great. I recommend you to take a look, since its funny to watch. If you were to select any game to have motion controls via Xbox Kinect, what would it be? Link to the video -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKQRClR5478&feature=emb_title

Hey Bomberben and the Bagulars, Best Bomberman game on the N64 and why? Jake Decatur, IL.

tbeeks15

Well hello there cohorts! If Nintendo were to make a Shadow of the Colossus rip-off, which Mario enemies would you love to see consume an uncomfortable amount of super mushrooms to become 100 times the size of Mario? Essentially, what Mario enemies (or maybe even an ally that you could see turn against Mario after undergoing such a power boost) would make the best levels and how would you take them down? Happy to see so many great people joining the MinnMax crew! Keep up the great work! Love & Respect! -Beeks from Grand Rapids, MI

hey brad or whatever y'all feeling fresh or kinda burnt out? how we feelin, gang? love ya -ian, va

Hey Ben and the Maxers! My question is about dialogue in games. How important is it to you as far as how much you enjoy a game? Once the Pandemic started and I was stuck in the house I got borderlands 3 and all the dlc for cheap. I did the tutorial and one mission and realized the dialogue was not for me and I have played 60 hours of that game just listening to podcasts. When I got to the final boss of the main story I had no idea why I was their and who that character was and I didn't care. Devolver last week showed of Shadow Warrior 3 and press got to play it. Watching the gameplay it looks exactly what I wished Doom Eternal was but again once the main character started talking I knew once again I will not pay attention at all to any dialogue in that game.

I'm playing a SNES game where your friend gets eaten by a sea monster, your cousin's parents get murdered and their likeness used so their company can be used for human trafficking, and your pet pig throws itself into a fire to save a starving village by being cooked. Describe a game with its darkest moments and make us sad. (mine was Illusion of Gaia)

Jason Wojnar

Hi, My question is for Leo. How is your mom doing? Care to call her again to share another funny story from your childhood or just to see how she is doing? The fans need to know!

Yarrow

Hey friends, I want to get deep with you here! What dreams did you have as a kid for when you grew up? Did you achieve any of them?

Spider_Dan

I've recently started re-playing my favourite game of all time, Illusion of Time or Illusion of Gaia depending on where you live. It is one of the strangest stories of any game I've played and it is the one game that always reminds me why I love video games in general. As a kid and throughout highschool I probably completed it 1,000 times. Playing it now probably 15 years since the last time, I get the exact same feelings as I play through all these years later. I have a million questions I could ask about this game, but I'll settle for one. For now at least. I'm always interested to hear what other people think of this game and I've never met anyone outside my sister and I who have played it so, have any of you played this game? What are your thoughts? I'll still listen to you if you hate it. After all, I think final fantasy sucks and I still listen to you.

Rory Gladstone

In real life, I'm a bit hopeless with money. I compulsively spend and I'm terrible at saving. But in videogames I am so good at saving my gold, septims, Gil and credits to Scrooge McDuck vault levels. What traits do you display in games that you wish were as easy in real life? Running up to NPCs for a chat? Good fashion? Rory in Scotland

PseudonymousJoe

I'm really enjoying my time with Ghost of Tsushima so far, and I realized a huge part of that is simply because of the navigate-by-wind mechanic. I never want to use a minimap in an open world game again. It doesn't have to be wind, but I really hope creative, immersive navigational cues catch on, because I don't know if I can go back. What's an example of a game mechanic that was so immediately satisfying to you that it spoiled you and and instantly set a new expectation for what you wanted from games?

Donnie

Hey friends! Do you have any book series you’d like to see translated into a game? I’ve been rereading through the A Song of Ice & Fire series and it’s such a colorful and rich world that would work really well in a Witcher style rpg with original stories. I know Game of Thrones tv-inspired games have been made. This is about fantasizing GOOD games though!

James Smith

Hey Ben and the Brady Bunch, What's your favourite photomode?

The Diddler

Greetings! Many people talk about their favorite games of all time. Favorite scenes. Favorite fatality. You get the idea. However, I have never heard anyone discuss their favorite easter egg / reference. It's odd because video games have so many easter eggs. My favorite easter egg, which is also a secret boss, is from Xenosaga Episode 3. You fight "Weltall " , from Xenogears, as you progress through the story and as the fight concludes, you see "Weltall" start to power up, but he never finishes and it just retreats. That's a cool easter egg in itself, but it gets even better. Later in the game, you see "Weltall" just docked in a hanger. In the background the alarm is going off informing everyone that the pilot of "Weltall" is missing. You have to get some items to be able to fight "Weltall" for a rematch. You get the items to begin the fight, but this time you are probably near max level and it appears to be an easy fight. HOWEVER, Weltall begins to powers up again. His wings spread, his armor begins to change from blue to red, his frame is getting larger and his robot face reveals a sinister smile. Yes, he just transformed into ID. My mind was blown and is still blown just thinking about it. Now this push over fight is now 100x harder. No other easter egg compares to this in my opinion. So, my question is, do you have a favorite easter egg that you just can't forget? I'm about to load up a youtube video of this fight right now. Keep up the good work.

Devin Cheek

Hello from Lexington KY. My question is about sequels. What recent game do you find yourself already hyped for the potential of a sequel? I'm not even half way through Ghosts of Tsushima and I find myself saying "man oh man Ghosts 2 is going to be so good". I think this points to a couple unique things about gaming as an entertainment medium, 1. sequels are usually better than their predecessors and 2. geeze am I too quick to want the next best thing, just finish the dang game first before drooling over what the next one could be like!

Josh LaBaw

Hello MinnMax (with two n's), I know Leo & Hanson are video people, Ana is in games over at Glitch in Minneapolis. I thought you'd have a unique look at what seems to be a rise in FMV games. Even Netflix has a few things I'd put in that category. Are we about to see a rise in this type of entertainment. It's an indie scene now but it's Amazon about to publish is first big game to Amazon Prime Video?

FlaminQueso

Hey howdy hey Hanson, ‘horts, and Mr. Geller, Let’s take a positive angle for just one quick second here. What is something you are really going to miss about life in the current pandemic? For me, it’s the complete freedom of working from home and the ability to take breaks from work to enjoy my hobbies in the middle of the work day. Thanks, Queso

Tanner Hoisington

When the Harry Potter game is finally announced by WB, are you going to be willing to play it despite the statements made by JK Rowling recently? Harry Potter as a series means so much to me that I am probably going to make an exception for this game, even if I will no longer support JK or the future movies. A Hogwarts RPG has been a dream of mine for years. Guess it's a classic separating the author from the work question.

Ryan Foshee

Good tidings King Ben and the Minnon-Knights. I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. Seems to me that gaming genres, while more varied than they used to be, are still much less diverse than what can be found in movies. That being said, are there any genres or, more broadly, themes that you would love to see explored more in games? As a person with an anxiety disorder, I would personally love to see more games incorporating anxiety in to the story in some way. I also feel like a romantic comedy game might be super fun to see. Thanks, Ryan F.

Hazal Mohammed

Hey, all. This might be a stupid question, but has anyone actually explained how these game upgrades work? I mean, if I buy a PS4 version of Yakuza 7 but then upgrade to the PS5 version, does my save transfer? Or am I just getting a free copy to start all over from the beginning? Because I really don't see the allure here if my save doesn't transfer. Or am I just being difficult here? Thanks. Hazal Mohammed

Mack Dack

Nintendo hasn’t had a new IP since Splatoon. I doubt many would have seen that style of game coming from Nintendo. What would you like to see out of Nintendo in terms of a new IP? Third person action game? First person shooter? A live service game? Something narrative based?

Brian Brown

Hey Ben and Crew, I’m currently going through old episodes of the podcast and got to the episode where you play game case trivia and I am LIVID at the back of the box description for Paper Mario. It describes the game as an action-adventure and there is a typo on the box. Worst of all though, is that it says quote: “He’ll meet up with 7 new companions”. This is bonkers because there are EIGHT partners that you get in that game (Goombario, Kooper, Bombette, Parakarry, Bow, Watt, Sushie, and Lakilester are all of the partners). Furthermore, the box mentions it incorrectly an additional time as well. How is it possible that the description for the back of this box description made it past QA and can you think of any other egregious text errors that have appeared in video games or video game boxes throughout the years?

Dylan Drazek

When I was a kid and I would watch my dad play and react to the cutting edge technology that was voice recognition used to order a squad around on SOCOM US Navy Seals for the PS2. At that age, I was CERTAIN that this was the peak of technology used in this way. What is one thing that, at a younger age, you were SURE that it was the peak technology and it would never get better?
