Hey Gang, This is my first experience playing Halo, I was in my senior year of high school when it came out and I was a PS2 owner and huge Timesplitters fan. So, I am coming into this experience with zero nostalgia, but with an understanding of the limitations of games from this era. Playing through this section of the game really felt like a slog. I am playing with the original graphics in the MCC on PC and there were times in the open areas where I had no idea where to go and the environments in the Assault mission felt super repetitive. One other weird thing that I noticed was that I felt that bullet impacts were hard to read. I would get the feedback on my controller, but I had trouble figuring out how much I was being injured until I heard my shield meter beeping. I am glad that you are hosting this Deepest Dive so that I had a reason to try this out, but I doubt that I will finish the game. Thank you! Brian Paradis (Pair-a-dice)

Also I realized that the alien weapons are way more effective than the assault rifle. But then again why wouldn’t they be? Human weapons were probably made to kill humans. And the alien weapons to kill their own kind.

t00thr0t

And lastly: what about those little guys? They seem to be a staple of Halo enemies. But to be honest I kind of don’t want to shoot them! And the more I think about it.. Are those actual children? Did they get dragged into this fight as cannon fodder, way too young and inexperienced for this? I just wanna scoop‘em up and bake some cookies with them!

JakeTwitchin

I'm here to talk plasma grenades BABY! I have done 0 research on this subject, but is it possible this was the first video game to introduce sticky grenades? Is there a better feeling then launching one of those suckers from deep and seeing it land squarely on the face of a grunt? No, no there isn't. Replaying this time around, some things aged better than others, and some things stayed the same. Plasma grenades stayed the same- f'ing sweet.

Kris

Was anyone else disappointed when they were playing it was just me. However, nothing was like I remembered the voices sound different the updates graphics made it look worse? The combat wasn’t as fun as I remember. It has been like maybe 10 or 12 years since I’ve played the original so maybe that has to do with it.

Sutton

Not sure if it’s already been mentioned, but on the original Xbox before the bumpers were added on 360, we had the black and white buttons. The flashlight is appropriately mapped to the white button and that makes me happy. Any plans on finishing the fight in a future deepest dive? Cheers!

A few thoughts: I hadn't played this since it first came out, and it really struck me how much it felt inspired by Half-Life. The absence of a sprint button is a bit frustrating and definitely feels like it dates the game. I've tried going back and forth between keyboard and controller, and this may be the only shooter I've ever played where I actually prefer using a controller.

Hello 👋 Minnmax, First time playing halo 1 since its release. I spent most of the playthrough staring at the ocean switching between classic and remastered view.

Bucket of Jello

I had forgotten this was only 2 player coop. I got 2 of my buddies together to crank through the campaign to be sorely disappointed.

Fizz

Here’s a question, Aside from the tried and true ‘noob combo’, what are your go to weapon combos thus far? This time around I’m really enjoying a needler and plasma rifle loadout.

Bucket of Jello

I went for legendary difficulty and fully depended on plasma pistol & pistol combo to carry me through. Felt weird leaving all of those rockets and sniper rifles behind. One of the levels didn't start you with the pistol though.... that one was rough

Bucket of Jello

It's so satisfying knowing the trick with hunters. Feels so good working your way into melee range, strafing past their lunge, and shooting 1 bullet into their back with the pistol. Master Chief is a badass

Bucket of Jello

Playing on legendary and being as stealthy as possible was really rewarding. Being able to skip entire packs, or punch half of them to death before they noticed you is the best

Bucket of Jello

The button to switch the graphics between classic and remastered is the same button to check your score in multiplayer. Every time I died my natural instinct is to check the nonexistent "score", only to change the graphics by accident. Was confused at first but chuckled the next 100 times I did it.

Hello Minnmax! First it feels amazing to be playing halo on mouse and keyboard, although i orginally played it and 2 on pc (i cant be the only one) but never finished it until years later on the 360. It really surpised me how well the mcc has translated to pc. Also it totally reminded me again that bungies sound design is amazing! True sci fi, not rpg first person shooters like this are in rare supply. Thank you!

I love how insane the physics are on the Warthog. The Warthog cannot be destroyed in this game no matter how many rockets and grenades you throw at it. It just goes tumbling around when an explosion is set off near by. A fun thing to try is to go into mission 4 “The Silent Cartographer” in co-op. Kill the enemies at the beginning of the level and pick up all the grenades you can find. After all enemies are killed a Warthog is dropped off, so pick a spot and melee your teammate in the back to kill them so they drop their grenades. Then have them melee you in the back in the same spot so you drop your grenades. Then park the Warthog on top of your dead corpses. Carefully pick up only one grenade and throw the grenade underneath the Warthog and watch the chain reaction of explosions catapult the Warthog into the Stratosphere. Fun stuff.

I remember in Fall 2007, with Modern Warfare and Halo 3 coming out, my eighth grade class was bitterly divided over which was better. The debate over sprint and aiming down sights raged particularly hard. At the time, I was all in on Halo and defended it against the CoD interloper, but going back to the Halo franchise for the first time since 3, I must now admit I was wrong. The lack of sprint and ADS just feels wrong, like my controller isn’t working.

Dan

I remember the one part in Halo: CE that blew my mind back when I first played it was in the Assault on the Control Room mission. The level starts to become super repetitive when you're fighting through slight variations of the same circular room for god-knows-how-many times, but then...you walk through a door into a much larger outdoor environment, where a massive battle between the Covenant and the marines is already taking place! It really stood out to me because it was so immersive. Like, "Hey, *other* things are happening...this world is so much bigger than just what I've been doing." In retrospect, do you think Bungie planned this? Like, "Let's numb their minds a little bit by feeding them 5 iterations of the same boring room, then completely rock their world by giving them an epic battle to stumble upon. And then, just to kick it up a notch, we'll give 'em a tank."

Jared Duddy

Many people talk about how landing on the Halo ring in the second mission blew their mind back in 2001, but the moment that made me say "well this is just CRAZY" way back when was the opening of The Silent Cartographer. Hearing the music swell into an epic crescendo as I jumped out of the pelican alongside the marines always got me hyped as hell as a kid. As Halo was my first non-N64 game, that first battle felt like such a large-scale encounter unlike anything I experienced in a game up to that point.

Allan

As someone who has only dabbled in Halo before this, I'm curious what people think of the grunts. Are they considered a beloved part of the franchise for fans? I know they're supposed to be silly cannon fodder, but I find them maybe just a bit too silly for the overall tone of the game. Not that everything needs to be completely serious. There's quippiness in the dialogue and the marine npcs seem like they're having a good time. Those things give the game some charm and levity, but the grunts are straight up cartoon characters running around with their arms flailing and screaming, "We're gonna die!" They remind me of the battledroids from Star Wars. And while I find them mostly annoying, at the same time I feel a little bad about killing them. Anyone else feel that way?

Shawn Mills

My favorite animation in the game is the pistol melee attack where chief throws the pistol up in the air and catches it for no reason other than it looks really cool. There's a part in assault on the control room where there are about 6 sleeping grunts who you can melee before they all wake up and it's just the best part of the game. It's also pretty disturbing that you can melee kill your fellow marines for their ammo and they won't attack you back unless you kill enough of them.

Jeorin

Unfortunately I'm not having a good time with this game. Rather than dunk on it, I'll just share three funny observations I had whle playing. 1. Do you think Cortana's lead designer went to the art team and said 'hey make sure she got that booty'? 2. I was firing on enemy units with one of the turrets. A marine ran directly through the line of fire, yelled 'watch where you're aiming jackass!', and promptly died. 3. The section at the start of the control room chapter was called 'I would've been your daddy'.

mngoldy

As a first time player of Halo I have to say I am enjoying the game but some parts really show its age. The whole beginning tutorial feels old with the joystick testing and not having a gun at the beginning. I hate the original controls, thankfully those can be changed. COD has trained me to like those controls. I'm terrible at controlling the Warthog and I think I killed more Marines then Covenant. Checkpoints have improved a lot of the years I got stuck in some bad checkpoints.

Simon M

One thing I loved doing in Halo CE that was made harder and harder as the series went on was going outside the intended map and fully exploring everything there is in the design space. The trickiest and oddest one was trying to get to the bottom of the waterfall at the start of the 2nd level Halo. It involved driving your warthog outside the map on invisible terrain in a very difficult path with perfectly timed pauses because the blue beams that shoot into the sky from the forerunner structure will freeze your controls if your vehicle is moving in any way whatsoever outside the map while it shoots, which forces you to restart checkpoint. Many A hour spent doing that one.

mngoldy

One question I have is, am I suppose to know whats going on story wise? Right now all I know is the Covenant is a religious Cult that wants to cause a flood and the Halo will help them do it. I accidentally found a cutscene with a robot talking to a light and they seem to be talking about nonsense.

BluCheezDressin

Hey MinnMaxers As the biggest Halo fan in the Discord (taking all challengers, Kyle or Queso), it’s hard to come at a discussion of the first 5 levels without a bunch of extra baggage. The opening cut scene does an amazing job planting seeds for the massive universe. * You’ve just escaped Reach (cool name for a place) * Big human space ships are no match for the aliens * The Covenant don’t know where Earth is It really sets the stakes high and helps propel you through the next couple hours of Covenant murder. Also this is from the era where they put extra lore in the game manual, go check out the discord for a screenshot if you don't have yours laying around! Cheers

Derin

Heya MinnMax, I find myself playing and enjoying the look of the game more with the original graphics in Halo CE Anniversary than the updated version. Does anyone else prefer how the game looks originally? Why is Cortana talking like she is using a walkie talkie? The "pshhh" after every time she talks doesn't make sense to me, since she is literally an AI in Chief's helmet.

Zach E

When playing the second mission "Halo", I get lost trying to find the groups of marines after traveling through the Forerunner tunnels. Any one else have a hard time navigating?

Ben O'Donnell

I have one very important question for you all: Were you able to crouch the first time the game wanted you to? Back in 2001 I was playing co-op with a friend and we couldn't for the life of us figure out how to proceed because we missed the pop-up text and couldn't find the control layout in the manual (another friend who was watching us later found it on the back page of the manual). It took us about 15 minutes to accidently stumble upon clicking in the thumbstick.

Jordan Holmdahl

Hey all, What was the most infuriating death you experienced during this chunk of Halo? Mine came right after I had to abandon the tank near the end of "Assault on the Control Room." That particular area, where you have to climb up a cliff and find yourself face to face with tons of enemies, several turrets, plus some Ghosts and a Banshee, was harrowing and took me over a dozen tries to fight through. At one point I was rushing to a med pack with about 1/3 of my health, when out of nowhere I was killed instantly by that F***ing Banshee slamming into me from directly above, completely out of my line of sight. Good god that was frustrating. That incident aside, I'm appreciating revisiting Halo even if I don't love the game. I hope everyone else has stories to share of absurd deaths!  Keep up the great work!Jordan H, St. Paul.

TwoLostNuts

Hope all is well folks :) Anyone else sacrifice any marine they saw with a sniper to gain more ammo? Also, why do some marine's continue to shoot the Covenant even after it seems like they have died? Is this a flaw in the AI or something more sinister? Could their hatred possibly run so deep?

Garrett Peters

Hey Minnesota Maximilian's Diving back into Halo Combat Evolved reminded me of how much fun split screen co-op is in Halo! Playing with my fiance was an absolute blast wreaking havok on screaming grunts and trying to land the highest jumps without flipping the warthog. There is so much fun to be had without just making your way through the story. Each level feels like a sandbox where sick stunts and destruction can be tackled in so many ways.

Nick from Atlanta

Hey Cohorts! Two quick thoughts: 1) The keyboard used to bring Chief out of Cryo has dedicated keys for the emoticons ^_^ and o_O. This implies that they're both used often enough in the future to have a dedicated key. 2) Grunt Funeral Party drastically changes how we approach engagements. Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Patrick H.

Just a quick note on this gem of a game: I forgot how much I love plasma grenades. I'm sure they weren't the first "sticky" grenade in games, but man, those are still my favorite. The sheer pleasure I get from a successful stick is still unmatched.

Colin Perkins

Bungie did such an incredible job planting story seeds for the larger universe in Halo CE and it was greatly expanded upon by the terminals that can be found in each mission when playing with the Anniversary visuals. Halo CE Anniversary was the first game that 343 Industries created, so the terminals showed fans the direction they wanted to take the franchise after it changed hands. What are your thoughts on the terminals? Personally, they helped pull me into the extended lore of the universe when I discovered them years ago, but I can see how they could be confusing and/or dismissed. Interesting to note that the terminals didn't exist in the original game, so they disappear when you toggle between the old and new graphics. Same goes for the skulls that can be collected on each mission.

Hey MinnMaxers, when I played Halo back in 2001, my perspective on games had changed. Before that, Goldeneye on N64 was my only experience with FPS games. While it took me some time to get used to the dual-stick controls, I knew I was playing something revolutionary and special. Do you remember thinking the controls of Halo were revolutionary at the time? Did you know that FPS games on console would control like this from now on or did you think Halo was a one off?

Marc S

I like to role play Master Chief as someone who desperately wants a good high five but doesn’t know his own strength. Which basically amounts to me going around slapping the crap out of everyone after every gun fight before letting out a dejected sigh when they fall down.

Fred Dinovo

Game/level design sure has come a long way huh? I remember loving this game when it came out and I'm enjoying it fine now. But WOW I'm spending a lot of time wandering around not sure where to go and going in circles. Eventually the game puts up the "shame marker" showing where to go, but honestly I'd love to be able to summon that whenever.

Zack

I was once listening to a podcast about controversial gaming opinions, and one host posited that Halo CE was SO well crafted and SO influential, that every other first person shooter developer tried to copy Halo's formula instead of trying to come up with their own creative solutions, and as a result the FPS genre as a whole became somewhat stale and un-innovative. I don't really agree with this opinion but I sure do spend a lot of time thinking about it. Shout out to Jared Petty for having such a thought-provoking controversial opinion.

Andrew Bittner

Fun visual glitch - if you repeatedly switch weapons really quickly, your legs don’t move (maybe the animation is resetting?) and it looks like you’re floating/gliding around. It’s visible in co-op!

Crayter

The huge world that you get the scope of right from the start of the second mission us really driven home by the vehicles. I played a decent amount of FPS games around this Era, particularly loved time splitters, but NOTHING gave that feel of rushing through a huge world like the vehicles in Halo did at the time. It was a huge breakthrough. Also: were you ever truly playing halo if you weren't trying to cram a warthog into EVERY corridor possible?!

Andrew vala

I think the classic Halo graphics do a better job of environmental storytelling; Halo feels like its slumbering. The new graphics are very bright and make the entire installation feel fully functional- no mystery.

Micah Thompson

I've never played the story (was 7 when Halo came out and grew up having a PlayStation, no Xbox) and just had my mind blown that Cortana is the naming inspiration for Microsoft's assistant. So cool. Still have no desire to use Cortana though.

Ben Fitter

This game is amazing, but I think it's even more amazing in the context of other shooters of its time. Doom, Quake, GoldenEye, etc. are all based around narrow hallways with rooms full of enemies. The first level makes it seem like this will be a similar experience, only to throw it out the window with the wide-open, scenic environments of the second mission. The environmental design really sets Halo apart.

Sandshrewd

My best memories from the first 5 missions are the beginning of "The Silent Cartographer". Landing on that beach gave me nostalgia of storming Normandy Beach in Medal of Honor: Frontline, although on a much smaller scale. The sniping /sneaking intro for "Truth and Reconciliation" would be a close second. Even though the concept was the same "go here and kill enemies, rinse/repeat", every level was varied just enough so every time felt like a new experience. Worst memory was finding out you couldn't equip the plasma sword or ride in the Banshee, what a bummer that was.

Ben Fitter

One other small note: I've been playing on the OG Xbox and I've forgotten how odd the controller was over the years. Is there any other system where the start button is on the far left side of the controller?

Wade Wojcik

Man, what a hell of a game. Glad you guys picked this one! On the bridge of the Autumn there’s a bulletin board with a few hilarious posts. Somebody’s selling a Hide -a- Bunk Combo, there’s a callback roster for Marines auditioning for the musical South Pacific, even the Superintendent from ODST’s slogan “Keep it Clean”. But most importantly, there’s a sign that says “Scooters are for squirts, no scooters on deck.” I think we all missed out on what could have been one of the greatest vehicles in the Halo saga. Also, Jen Taylor plays other characters in the game than just Cortana! Marty O'Donnell has said she's also the pilot of the escape pod in the cutscenes between levels 1 and 2. Love you guys!

Wade Wojcik

Boy, level 5 is rough. The outdoor areas with the bridge, Tank, Ghost, and Banshee are great, but the interior encounters send the player through a nearly identical copy of the same square room filled with enemies 10 times! This is something Halo CE is notorious for, and while you tend to see backtracking across the series, I don't remember ever seeing it quite like this in later Halo games.

Tommy Carver-Chaplin

If it's not too late, my main takeaway from playing this half - further than I've played Halo: CE before - is how tough and engaging the AI is. They flank, they take cover, they jump out of nowhere and they take a crap-ton of bullets. There were times on the Assault mission when I had to restart over and over because of low health and low ammo. It's quite incredible, but gets gnarly even on normal.

LaRay M. Hare

Hello Deepest Dive! And Halo: CE to boot! I have been a Halo fan for years. From the incredibly detailed Instruction Manual to the LAN party multiplayer sessions in the dorms. Though, the one thing I felt that Bungie nailed outside of the Magnum being the best weapon in Combat Evolved, was the sense of wonder of the world. Each mission, especially the first several drop you in an unexplored and untamed wildernesses. And I maintain, Bungie makes some of the best Skyboxes in gaming. -BluMayhem
