We're ready to kick off a gigantic discussion of Spider-Man: Miles Morales from Insomniac Games called The Deepest Dive, but we need your comment to read on the show! This time the panelists are Ben Hanson, Kyle Hilliard, Ana Diaz, and special guest (former Easy Allies member) Kyle Bosman.

For the first of two discussions, we'll be covering everything in the game up until you destroy a Nuform reactor. Please, please, please don't spoil or discuss anything after that point. Because we're continuing to grow, please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. We want to get to as many comments as possible.

Please submit a comment below with your specific thoughts on the game. Please don't just leave a long review, get specific. Let's talk about your favorite moment, move, time capsule, line, suit, anything specific. The more specific you are, the higher the odds of us reading your comment during the discussion. We'll finish collecting comments on Tuesday morning. Next week we'll be looking for your thoughts on the back half of Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

You can watch us record The Deepest Dive live on Tuesday evening if you're at the $10 Backstage Pass tier on Patreon. The link will be in the Backstage Pass tier on the Discord. Thanks for your support!

A specific moment that really stood out to me was the opening with both Peter and Miles working together to deal with Rhino. From The hopping back and forth between one Spider-Man dealing with the thugs to the other taking care of the big guy, I couldn't help but feel like THIS is what Spider-Man 2 is going to be like. Does anyone else hope that this is giving us a small preview into what the next entry is going to play around with?

“Gotta watch out for spiders, man.” I’m not sure why Insomniac Games decided to punish my enjoyment of stealth takedowns with one repeated line of dialogue. On a more serious note one thing I think the smaller story benefits from is not stringing out long reveals. I knew Phin was the Tinkerer when Mile’s mom asked her about her brother, but Miles finds out not long after with the bridge sequence. I’m glad it wasn’t hours later.

The soundtrack is just incredible! I love how they swapped the orchestral swells of the first game when you're swinging around for a more hip-hop and beats style soundtrack in this game. It's just so damn cool. And the song during the montage sequence with Miles and Ganke was awesome too. I personally love the vibes of this game much more than the first.

Gabe Brandolino

I'm really glad that they don't take a long time to reveal Prowler and Tinkerer's identities. They can get into much more interesting stuff in the story earlier by revealing information to the characters that is pretty apparent to the players.

I played through the game in one sitting like an animal so I won't comment on the story for fear of spoiling something (LIKE WHEN WOLVERINE SHOWS UP.....I kid, I kid). Just want to say this photo mode feels next gen. The ability to add light sources is going to completely change video game photography! Also loving the clothes on top of spider costume options we have.

One cool little thing I noticed is the if you press the square button when going around the open world out of combat, Miles has some fun animations. He will finger point with a little venom spark and even dance. I found this out when I saw a rooftop party and thought it was contextual, but turns out it works anywhere.

I am loving Miles Morales compared to my lukewarm thoughts on Marvels: Spider-Man. It could be a “newness” factor at play, given I upgraded to both 4K OLED and a PS5 to play the game, but mostly it’s my preference to Miles vs. Peter as the playable character. I love his slightly scrappy fighting style, the nuance in his free falls as he swings around town, and how he teeters just a smidge to keep his balance when he web snaps to a light pole. Miles is an imperfect Spider-Man and it’s got me grinning ear to ear.

Overall, I'm thoroughly enjoying the game, although the writing feels like it may be a slight step down. That being said, I’m not sure if it’s just hard to write believable teens or if it just pales in comparison to the first game. But that’s not what stuck out to me the most. What stuck out to me the most is the choice not to use PlayStation consoles in the environment instead of generic ones! When you enter Miles’ apartment for the first time, there are generic controllers in the box next to the tube tv. They even have Xbox face buttons, right down to the colors. There’s also a knock off Vita in Phin’s family business/ hide out. Maybe Marvel didn’t want a particular console to be canonical in a Marvel universe? Who knows, but it’s strange.

Brenton and Meriam

It's interesting that no one seems particularly concerned with secret identities in this game. Uncle Aaron realizes it's Miles straight away. The next day he reveals that he's the prowler to Miles. Phin Tinkers with the doorbell before she's even on screen. It seems like the mystery villain on the Raft is the only one taking it seriously!

They contrasted Miles and Peter's versions of spiderman pretty good. Pete has a disciplined and calculated style while Miles has a more bombastic/aggressive and stylish approach that can leave him open to a few more hits. Also Miles is a little wobbly in traversal in keeping with him being new to the spiderman thing-- like when you come into a perch too fast he'll get off balance and have to catch himself.

I really appreciate that the developers set this game in the winter to give the recycled open world from the last game a slightly different feel. They really nailed this sense of place from the gorgeous snow effects, to the holiday decorations and a Nochebuena sequence, even down to Miles wearing a winter coat when outdoors and not dressed up as Spidey. Miles Morales -- more like Peter Parka, am I right?

Strange Sloth

Was listening to a podcast so I had the game with subtitles on and no sound, while I was playing a mission side mission that involved electricity I was impressed that the feeling of crackling of the electricity was pulsing through the controller and then I thought what a great accessibility feature for deaf gamers. Cheers CLC’s!

Doreen Ford

How's this for a neat little detail? I've started the game up enough to notice that when you're loading a game up Miles is wearing a red shirt and a black jacket on the train, which, to me, reflects his traditional black and red suit but civilian style. That can't just be a coincidence, right?

Deep Space Trace

I usually hate quick time events, but the ones in this game are so beautifully cinematic that they put a goofy smile on my face every time I do them, even if they're pretty much carbon copies of the ones we did in the 2018 game. My wife, who cares not at all about games, actually requested that I call her into the room whenever I have to do one of them because she thinks they look so cool.

tbeeks15

Hey cohorts! So pumped for this Bosman x MinnMax collab! So obviously, while playing this game, thoughts of you being Spiderman in real life are bound to come up. While lost in these thoughts I realized I would avoid cranes at all cost in real life. Realistically, 200 pounds swinging from a crane wouldn’t be enough to topple one but just the thought of it possibly happening is enough to freak me out and avoid them. Plus it would give Jameson way too much good content for his podcast. Every time I see a crane in game this thought pops up now. This is probably just a me thing but do any of you have any role-playing quirks for this game? Love & Respect! -Beeks from Grand Rapids, MI

Spider_Dan

I really should have bought this game...

Giovanni D'Amico

I loved the cartoony animated suit in PS4 Spider-Man and wore it exclusively during postgame trophy cleanup. I was surprised to see that Miles's animated suit (not the pre-order Spider-Verse one, but the other one) is unlockable so early, and I'm FORCING myself to try on other suits as I go from mission to mission. Such a cool feature, and it's interesting how the contrast makes the world look even more realistic. I plan to toss on the Spider-Verse frame-skipping mod for postgame cleanup.

Fred Dinovo

Something I noticed, but might be imagining it, there's a lot more taking place in doors in this game right? Even when finding the tech crates you always seem to end up inside at least briefly. I feel like the first game took place mostly out doors outside of some MJ/Miles stealth missions.

Patrick Polk

Did anyone besides me jump straight to Miles Morales after not getting around to the 2018 Spider-Man? Unfortunately Marvel's Spider-Man is part of my outsized pile of shame. So I'm playing Miles Morales on PS5 after skipping the original game. The beginning of Miles Morales was a bit of a steep learning curve to me on the default Amazing difficulty. There were plenty of tips, but overall it seemed like those were geared to remind people of the controls after they had played the first game, but were a bit rusty. I felt like I was pretty bad at the game for quite a while, but ultimately I got much more comfortable with the controls and I'm really enjoying it now. How did people who played the 2018 game find the difficulty at the start of Miles Morales?

Empiric Unicorn

Dive deep derp divers! Swinging around on the collapsing bridge, fighting the tinkerer and crawling into the belly of a Roxxon lab just triggered something in my brain making me feel like a hero, then I immediately went and ruined that feeling by playing a side mission that turned me into a glorified plumber for what felt like an hour. They can't all be winners but some missions are pure magic! (and the venom powers give Miles that extra fighting oomph that Parker was missing.)

Matt McKenna

I love the small touches that this game has. For example certain stealth take downs and even while swinging Miles will slip or trip up and still manage to do what he’s got to do but it’s nice having him not just be the same super efficient Spider-Man as Peter since he’s just starting out.

Derek Tripp

Performance mode. Thankful to Insomniac! I hope we continue to get 60fps options on these major console games. It makes a huge difference. Which mode did you all play on?

Ben Ritchie

Hey everyone! I gotta get your opinion on the Peter Parker’s new face? Do you like it, hate it, didn’t really notice or care about it? I don’t hate his new look but I really preferred the original because he looked more grown up and experienced whereas now he looks like he could be the same age as Miles for pete’s sake!

Joe Dean

Hey Spider-Minns, Surprise Insomniac still knows how to make a great Spider-Man game, however, at least on the PS5 version, this one needed a little more time in the oven. As a PSA of you're playing on the PS5 and can't do any of the challenges try starting one through the menu that pops up when you hit the PS button. They started working for me after I did that. A couple things I really liked is the chibi-Miles rocking out on the menu screen when there's no map, and all of Holo-Peter's dialogue during the Holo-Vulture fight. Signed, Your friendly neighborhood Joe Dean PS The new Peter design looks good in motion, much better than the old one.

Derin

Hello Spider Crew, Really enjoying the game so far, and it feels like more Marvel's Spider-Man which is pretty much what I wanted. The game taking place during winter and more specifically the holidays, really helps change up the world enough from the original game. Quick question: Is this already the best holiday/Christmas time game ever made? Swinging around a decorated New York really helps put me in the holiday mood.

Lukie LeDoux

One thing I'm really enjoying about this game is that you're doing a lot more Friendly Neighborhood ™ stuff. In an age of superheroes saving the world 3-4 times a year, it's refreshing to bring things back to street level. The bridge scene is especially great because you rescue people from danger, without punching some super guy. It's good stuff.

PhillyYeetSteak

I am a sucker for unlockable costumes in games, and i have found that the eyes is a big deciding factor of whether or not i equip a suit. They have to be expressive (i go into photomode to check if they move) and i love the bigger eyes. The gift suit peter gives miles at the beginning would be perfect if it wasnt so hideous from the neck down... Anyone else picky about suits like me? Or share my specific requirements about the eyes?

Conor

So far I think I am technically disappointed but that’s not to say I don’t really like the game because I do. I just feel like it being so short makes it feel like it’s in this weird middle ground where I’m just supposed to like Miles because Into the Spiderverse was a good movie and because “come on it’s a Spiderman game guy, just accept it!” I don’t know if I feel like I am connecting with Miles character development so far. He can hack any terminal so I guess he’s a computer whiz just like Peter? Idk, it’s good, it’s pretty on my OLED, the combats super fun and engaging still where it doesn’t feel button mashy like assassin’s creed games can feel like to me. But I don’t know, Astro’s Playroom has got me a little more hyped and I’m kinda surprised at that

Hello Minn-maxers and Kyle, aka ''Dark Prince of Nerd Media'', aka ''Donkey Butt'' I'm impressed with how much more personality and atmospheric style this game has over the 2018's original. The first-hour is a showcase of impressive animations with Miles more stylish swinging and combat finishers, gorgeous visuals alongside more bombastic set-pieces and a better use of music (including licensed songs this time!). Also, this time I think because of Miles relationships within Harlem and the whole christimassy look NY has, the city feels much more realistic and alive. Heck, the first 5 minutes of the game have Miles leaving the subway listening to music, and he is wearing Timbs and looking at cool street art while heading to a bodega. Thats more effort to showcase the uniqueness traits of New York than anything the first game did. Im having such a great time hanging out on this world and I hope yall are too!

Christopher Reardon

So how many of us are playing on PS4? I think it still looks great - especially the into the spider verse suit with the suit and visor mods equipped. I am thrilled to be back swinging around manhattan!

Brad Grenz

Ahoy-hoy Deep Diviners! I'm having a great time, but I want to mention something that struck me the first time Miles returns home. After he crawls in though his bedroom window, my first thought was about his room not looking anything like what I expected. The furnishing was dated and it lacked any of his personality. I thought that was strange, but it's quickly explained that this was in fact totally intentional. Miles and his mother have recently moved from Brooklyn to Harlem. They're now living in his grandmother's old apartment where they're still unpacking and getting settled in, so it actually makes a ton of sense that the bedroom has that uncomfortable guest room feel right now. What's more, this sense of Miles being something of an interloper in his new home mirrors the story as he tries to step more fully into the role of Spider-man. It's just an incredibly smart detail to tie the home environmental design into the game's core themes so naturally.

Barrett Boswell

Hey crew, So I have the game but waiting till I can get the ever elusive PS5 to play it but I do want to give Insomniac credit for the Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse Miles costume. It is incredibly cool to see the look and movements of Miles mimic the way it is in that movie. Bravo Insomniac. And much love to you MinnMax

Andrew George

I'm loving the game so far. All the little details Insomniac packs into the city and settings like the Morales apartment are so amazing it feels like a real place. I also have to commend all of the voice and motion capture performances they really help bring these characters to life. I just wish the few scenes you see unmasked Peter Parker during the intro didn't distract me due to Pete's new face that makes him look way to young in my opinion.

Evan Tatro

First time participating in a Deepest Dive! I really loved how they changed up the combat takedown in the final part of the nuform reactor mission! Mechanically incorporating the Prowler into the finisher animation made Miles teaming up with his uncle feel much more dynamic. I’m intrigued to see how their relationship develops, and how it will differ from the movie and comics version!

jkk411

Confidence and polish. Those are the two words that come to mind so far. There's a smoothness to everything from the way the combat flows, to the way you transition in and out of cutscenes. Miles will be swinging into a mission area and then all of the sudden he's planting on the side of the building and we are off and running into the next story sequence. Along the way I'm able to check off a few of the side activities and they are usually a breeze to knock out and keep going. There's a lack of friction that just keeps me wanting to play.

mitchmaxed

Hey MinnMax crew! I’ve really enjoyed your deepest dives, it’s what first drew me to MinnMax. I haven’t been able to participate live yet, so excited to be able to with such a fun game. Miles is such an interesting character. I love his humility and awkwardness. After playing the first game with a Spider-man much further along in the journey, it’s fun to play a character really coming into themselves. I also really love the relationship he has with his mother. It’s so authentic! His mother is a really interesting character too, and I’m excited to get to see how her story develops. I hope nothing happens to her. I’m really enjoying the family focused story in the game. I can’t wait to see how it all - like the city council race and Miles’ uncle plot threads - interacts with the larger story.

Shawn Mills

I was excited to check out the side missions and was hoping to run into some fun familiar characters from the first game like Black Cat, Taskmaster, or Tombstone. Instead of any of those we are treated to the return of Howard the weird homeless guy who collects pigeons which he somehow managed to lose yet again. I was so disappointed and Peter's fun pigeon facts were not helping things. Other then that I'm enjoying the game and I'm excited to see where the story goes.

The Krispy Kreme Lemur

One particular gameplay tweak I’ve enjoyed is that Miles will splat limply on the ground if you land while tricking in midair. In the original, Peter would always land perfectly on his feet while performing the same moves. Overall, Mile’s arm-flails and Yoshi-kicks during web swinging are endearing and show that Miles can’t yet live up to the grace and experience shown by Peter in the first game.

Erkie

I don’t know if this affected anyone else but I got a little emotional before the dinner scene with Phin, Ganke, Miles, and his mother Rio. It wasn’t from anything having to do with the story, but with Miles’s mom speaking Spanish on the phone. I had never really heard a character casually speak Spanish like that in an English-speaking game and I got a little emotional because it reminded me so much of hearing my my mom gossip on the phone when I was a kid. That and seeing so much diversity represented in Harlem has made me appreciate this series even more.

Yarrow

I wanted to point out what I liked about the Dualsense features used in Miles Morales. I know a lot of praise has been shown for the Dualsense with Astro's, and its much more pronounced than in Spiderman, but there are a few cool moments with it that I think shine and make me excited to see more from the controller. The standout for me was during the fight between Roxxon and the Underground on the bridge, The Underground begins firing at Roxxon, and you can feel an accurate plinking in the controller when the bullets hit the shields. I thought it was such a cool moments and really added to the intense essence of that action scene!

GreenMountainState

I love the Christmas and NYC Holiday vibe. That early scene in the apartment, turning the lights on the tree was awesome.

GreenMountainState

I really liked how the game got you set up with settings and then transitioned right from the that same subway shot into the opening scene.

Tor Melkevik

The game is rock solid on PS4 Pro, which is good, since my pre-ordered PS5 will be delivered in May. Presumably 2021.

Claudi

Man, the music in this game is fantastic! Every time I come out of a cutscene, it seems like no matter what beat starts up, I'm hyped to start swinging through the city!

Connor

Heyo gang, So it kinda sucks that the suit with the cat in the backpack is locked behind finishing the campaign huh? I just want to fight baddies with a little friend. Stay cool broskis, Connor

Eric Merrill

Might be too late, but I’d just like to point out how much more fun it is doing swing tricks as Miles. I don’t remember doing anything other than a flip or spin as Peter, but I’m constantly doing crazy stuff as Miles. My favorite is when you go into a dive and he’s lying on his back, hands behind his head saying “i can get used to this” It seems like they tried to give him more style as in no matter what position he’s in when you shoot your web he reacts fluidly and the physics feel real.

Samuel Hall

Hello to the CLCs and the Dark Prince of Nerd Media, I barely had a chance to play the game but I have to say, the Christmas Eve Dinner gets an A+ in terms of accuracy to Puerto Rico. I was able to recognize tamales, arroz con habichuelas (rice with beans), and tostones (fried plantain chips). Love and respect, Sam

Victor Pham

I appreciate that the Tinkerer's identity was revealed in the first act of the game, because as a comics fan, a name like Phin was a pretty dead giveaway of what her actual identity. Rather than spending the whole game pretending like there's a great mystery there, they chose to have that early reveal be the source of conflict in and of itself. Have you ever had an adaptation of a piece of media "spoiled" by knowing the source material?

Evan Dalton

I really love the use of “On My Own” by Jayden Smith and Kid Cudi as a triumphant song about the confidence that Miles has to be the only Spider-Man of New York. It not only fits thematically into the story that is being told but also fills out a very distinct musical motif around Miles that continues to make him stand out from the sea of other super heroes. I only wish I could swing to that song whenever felt the urge.

aaronisnotcool

I mentioned this before in the post, but I think Miles' voice sounds a lot like Chance the Rapper's. Chance voice is pretty high and nasally esp when he raps.
