Hello to Jeff Patriarchava (and the rest of you, I suppose)! I likely won't have a PS5 or a Series S until the holidays NEXT year, which gives me more time to whittle away at my backlog, as well as some long-anticipated replays. For instance, I've been trying to commit to revisiting all eight Silent Hill games since at least 2018, and hope to finally run through them in '21. In the meantime, here are my notable games for either replaying, or just finally playing, and I want your help deciding which comes first. Some are single games, some are full series, in case that influences your take. Here's the list! 1) Batman: Arkham Asylum/City (replays) 2) Bioshock (replay, and series, maybe?) 3) Silent Hill (series replay) 4) Monster House (replay) 5) Shadows of the Damned (replay) 6) Dante’s Inferno (replay) 7) The Warriors (replay) 8) Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (replay) 9) Shadow Complex Remastered (replay) 10) Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts 11) The Saboteur (replay) 12) Singularity (replay) 13) Uncharted (series replay) 14) Knack/Knack 2 15) Little Big Planet 3

Hey everyone, including my nemesis (non-Geoff) JeffM, I don't have one of those new fancy-schmancy next gen consoles, but everyone cannot stop talking about the PS5 controller. Even die hard x box controller backer Andrew Reiner is excited and praising it. I guess, because it is a console exclusive feature, do you think any 3rd party game creators will use the functionality? Also, how long will it last during the generation before the "novelty" might be forgotten like the touch pad or speaker or light bar on the PS4 controller? -Geoff aka Groffles

Christopher Reardon

Hey Minnmaxers, So many great and exciting games to play and discuss. So why do I just keep playing Stardew Valley?!

Jake Z

The DualSense is amazing. I truly can't believe how cool it feels. Astro's Playroom is wonderful. Sackboy is a blast, especially in local multiplayer. The Pathless is serene. Demon's Souls is gorgeous. Miles Morales is magnificent. Playstation hit it out of the park with this launch. I haven't been this excited about playing video games in a long time.

Dru Marcus

Hail the MinnMax crew! Are there any behind the scenes looks at game development that you wish you hadn’t learned? When I was a kid and had no clue how games worked and elevator rides or winding hallways to hide the game loading in the background didn’t bother me. Now when I see these things it breaks the immersion of the game. Was there anything specific from any of your cover story trips or interviews that you learned that may have soured your enjoyment of a game? Have a turbo week!

Matthew Steen

Hello! I'm currently switching between Demon's souls and Astro's playroom. Between the controller (see Astro), the graphical improvement (see Demon's souls), the new UI features (I've been using screen sharing and cards, both work great), and overall speed of the console this generation feels like a much better leap than the PS4 gen was. What were the biggest console gen jumps in your opinions? I'd put this up there with the jump to HD and probably slightly below the jump to 3D.

Jeorin

Greetings MinnMax fellows, Has there ever been a game that wasn't well received on release that you enjoyed despite the negative buzz surrounding it? For me that game is Thief (2014). I was a big fan of the original games, but I like the smaller and more densely packed mission areas, and the overall look and feel of the city hub. The game still looks amazing today, the sound design is top notch, and all the little animations for snubbing out lights and grabbing loot are just so appealing. Many fans of the original Thief games hated on the game when it came out, and the game had middling scores in general, but I just love it. Do you have a game like this?

Mason Cowell

As to the ps5, so far I'm highly impressed! The controller is generally amazing, honestly even without the bells and whistles it would probably be my favorite controller to date. Performance has been flawless aside from a single game crash playing Demon's Souls, which also is probably the best looking game ever made? Right? Console UI is also super solid to me. Everything is easy to find and use after a small adjustment period.

Matt Landers

Hello CLC's, Simple question, what is your Red Dead Redemption 2 game? You know the game that you tell yourself that you're going to get to but if you're being honest with yourself, you never will.

absurdziggy

On your personal top 10, is a game more likely to be there because: gameplay or story? I started picking apart my own personal top 10 and it's a near perfect split. Also, suriel pls talk about Doom Eternal, no one is talking about it. I don't think it's GoTY but it's the best shooter I've ever player

Tactical Dreamer

Hello MinnMax, It cannot be overstated how amazing the load times on the PS5 are. I can barely get in a sip of my drink during loading screens for Assassin's Creed Valhalla! Something more specific that I don't see a lot of people talking about is the lack of folders. First Nintendo and now Sony have both gotten rid of organization options. Why is that? Does the Series X have them? Thanks, Tactical Dreamer

Hi, What's the name of the parrot in the Great GOTY Hunt intro?

Matt Lynch

Hey everyone, I've been loving my PS5 so far. I'm trying to manage my way through Demon's Souls, Miles Morales, Bugsnax, and Sackboy but I would say I'm mostly into Demon's Souls right now. It is probably the best looking game I've ever played. The UI is kind of confusing to me still at this point, I'm having trouble finding stuff, and the way they flipped what pressing the PS button and holding it down does from the PS4 is really messing me up. I did have a scary first night where my Miles Morales hard froze twice and I had to hold down the power button for over 20 seconds to get it to turn off. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled and it has been working great ever since. I got my first PS5 platinum with Astro's Playroom. What an awesome experience!

Josh LaBaw

Skipped PS5 on launch day because I thought a Dualsense & a nice PC would be enough. So far no haptic feedback support. Is haptic feedback worth the 4-5 hundred Bucks?

The Krispy Kreme Lemur

Hello Max and the Minnimizers, With the next console generation upon us, its fun to dream about what new, unexpected capabilities increased processor and memory speed might offer to existing games. One feature that I would like added to some old games is the ability to “fast forward” through gameplay. Persona 5 already had a similar feature last generation but I think it would be very cool when applied to “real time” games. Using this ability to compress the time spent observing guard patrol patterns in stealth games is one example that comes to mind, but there are surely other interesting ways to use this. What game / genre do you folks think would most benefit or be most broken by the introduction of this feature?

Steven Lambson

Am I cursed? So far I have started an Anthem podcast and a Godfall YouTube channel. Should I make a Cyberpunk 2077 TikTok account? How do you handle self doubt when creating content?

Witchstalker

I was fortunate enough to get a PS5, but it won't be here until the end of the week. However, the game I'm most excited for is the Demon's Souls remake, so I'll pose a question related to that: what game, in your opinion, is most deserving of a Demon's Souls level remake?

Victor Pham

I'm pretty particular about managing individual games saves, so not being able to upload/download cloud saves from each individual game on the home screen is a major turn off to me. Am I alone in this?

The Diddler

Should Sony and Microsoft handle pre orders like Apple? I’m really fed up trying to get a PS5. It’s the first console I can’t get my hands on and living in Japan only adds to my frustration. (Everything is a lottery / raffle here. Unless I get lucky on Amazon.jp) When I ordered my iPhone 12, it was very easy. No problems what so ever. Even people who missed the first shipment, they know they will get one, now all they have to do is wait. With consoles it’s a game of constantly checking on stock updates, then rushing to click some buttons. If you don’t do it within a minute, out of luck. And my job as a school teacher makes it even harder. (Yes, consoles have to keep retail happy where as Apple doesn’t necessarily have to, but we live in a time where does that really matter? Sony is making about 7million PS5s by March 2021? Set 3 million aside for their online queue, ship 4 million to retails. Once you pre order, it’s not a matter of out of stock or in stock, it’s the matter of getting a ps5 next week, or in January. I think it will reduce a lot of stress in people trying to get these consoles, but idk. Maybe I’m not thinking clearly because of all the rage.

Clemens Zobel

Has there ever been a major release you were super excited for but for some reason (could be work related or personal), you weren't able to fully enjoy it or missed it completely? I was super excited for Valhalla on Series X, I took time off from work the entire rest of the week it released. But a few weeks before release, we entered crunch and I got slapped with a deadline. I ended up working 16+ hour days and weekends to try and meet the deadline so I could fully enjoy Valhalla. But I didn't quite make it so I had to work some hours during my Valhalla PTO time. Wish I could join the Miles Morales Deepest Dive, but Assassin's Creed is my favorite series and I gotta finish Valhalla! Hopefully I can make it for Part 2!

Welcome to "Bad Instructions." I read a description of a well known game using information from the instruction manual, you guess the game. 1. While digging for plant fossils, an archeologist stumbles upon a lost treasure from the past. Although it leads to events that threaten humanity, it also might be humanity's only hope. I give it a solid B+ It’s not the best launch line up ever but it’s close. I platinumed Astro which blew me away and now I’m several hours into Demons Souls (From is my favorite developer so this is big for me) The controller is the best PS5 enhancement. Overall, I’m super happy with it but it could be better

Travis Manick

PS5 notes - It’s weird how I have to reselect my PS profile every time I come out of rest mode. It’s a weird step that wasn’t there on PS4, and feels contrary to the ‘turn on and play’ lifestyle - I think that the dashboard will be considered fantastic after people have some time to reset their expectations and habits from PS4’s dashboard. It’s fast, it’s clean, and the more I use it, the more I can get around quickly - The ‘explore’ tab that it lands you on when you boot up feels like gross advertising space more than an exploration of things I’m interested in. At least it’s all in one place instead of scattered throughout

Jared B

With the releases of the new generation of consoles and the rumors of a switch successor next year, I thought it would be fun to play the game new gen or cross gen. Rules are pretty simple. I’m going to name some game series and you will have to guess if the next game in series will be exclusive to next gen or if it will be gross gen. For the sake of the game let’s pretend that the games that come out on the SwitchU will not play on the OC switch. You can also say we are not getting a new game in the series this Gen. -Assassins Creed -Gears of war -Uncharted -Alan Wake -Pokémon -Grand Theft Auto -God of War -Ghost of Tsushima -Puzzle Fighter.

Fred Dinovo

Howdy all, Personally I am excited for the next version of the interface, seems like a lot of stuff is missing from PS4 like the warning when you are about to close out of a game to open something else. Also regarding the controller, the shape of it feels like it is trying to escape or slip out from my hands. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but does anyone else feel like you can't quite grip it right? I am enjoying the system and am excited for the future, the rumble is fun! But with all the hype leading up to it I was expecting something way better than what's on the Switch, but really it's about the same (so far). A gentleman's B- Oh god I spent so much money, Fred

Sean Mason

Heyya Ben and CLCs As I was playing through Astro's and started Spiderman Remaster on my first day of getting the PS5 I felt pure childlike joy that I honestly cannot remember having playing video games since I first got my hands on the PS1. I'm wondering if you have all had a similar experience with the PS5, and if so, what is it about this console that might be evoking stronger emotional reactions than many other modern consoles? Is it just me or does this one feel extra special? -Sean Mason

Dylan Drazek

Hey there gang! So Ben mentioned that moving sucks and having just moved myself I agree and HIGHLY advise people who are about to move to stop procrastinating months before the move cause you can NEVER truly understand how much crap you have till you have to move it all. If you could show your past self ONE thing you went through that sucked to get them to get their butts into gear, what would it be??

MickManga

I found it pretty funny that each Bugsnax says it's own name. For myself Bungger with it's Goofy like voice cracked me up. So my question for all of you, is what are some of your favorite video game creature sounds?

Brady Easter

Hey everyone! So, for the PS5, I love it. A new gen is always great and this one has the very cool DualSense controller, 4K gaming (a first for me), awesome launch games--it's great! I have very few complaints, but there is one that keep nagging at me. I hate that I can't get to a menu to turn off the console and/or controller by holding down the PS button. And the kicker is, if you hold down the PS button, after a second or two IT PLAYS A TONE. It's like Sony's saying, "Yeah, we see you holding down that button. But it ain't gonna do crap. All you get is this noise. Now move along." Even if you don't have holding down the button do anything, why have the tone? Anyway, that one detail does bug me but overall I'm loving my new consoles. Video games are neat. You guys are cool. The MinnMax community is awesome. Just good stuff all around. Hugs and kisses to Kyle, Brady Easter Edmond, OK

Unpatched Gaming

Hey friends! We have been reflecting on great moments from this generation. Some of our favorites are completing Tarry Town in Breath of the Wild and sitting on the bench for a few minutes when you meet Quirrel for the first time in Hollow Knight. What are some of yours?

Chree McGee

Hey guys. important question for you- Blue jeans have been in style for around 70 years now. How long will they remain popular?

Preetham Yarlagadda

Hello everyone! I'm curious how you guys feel about this whole performance mode/fidelity mode split and whether that's something you hope to see continue. Personally having a unified experience that just works is what consoles are for and I feel like this complicates things a little more than necessary. That being said, do you think this is what pushes developers to start prioritizing frame rates more now that more people can directly compare and feel the difference between 30 and 60fps. Patrick Klepek on Waypoint radio was talking about how being able to switch frame rates in demons souls "broke his brain" and now he can't help but think about frame rates. He thought the game looked significantly worse in the games performance mode because it ran at 30fps, something he never cared about before. Do you think this is an experience a lot of people will have and will this push developers to emphasize framerates more than fancier graphics?

Joshua Caleb

Hey Ben-10 and the CLCs, With both next gen consoles going for super fast SSD storage and that storage coming at a premium, and games almost assuredly getting larger and more detailed; are we about to go back to the days of ye olde PS2 and GameCube memory cards of counting the blocks and bytes of every game and needing to own multiple "storage cards" to fit all our games? (Unless you have super fast internet and no data cap) Especially as more games move to live service models with daily check-ins and bonuses, you can't just delete those and redownload them willy nilly

Bob Buel

Excluding Mario 1-1, what is the greatest single level or map of a video game? I feel like anytime "the best level" debate comes up, everyone looks to the classic Super Mario Bros 1-1, and for good reason, but what other levels deserve their moment to shine?

YARF

I HATE the Play Station 5! ....... It ruined my marriage! This launch got me thinking about old launch lineups. Wasn’t KillZone Shadow Fall wonderfully MEH? Where for a brief period in time, KillZone Shadow Fall was one of the best games ever made for the PS4 by virtue of simply existing. It even sold pretty well, as people, seething to play SOMETHING that had that “next gen feel” and justified their luxury purchase, clambered over to it ravenously, like rats fleeing a sinking merchant ship at sea, scrabbling over to ANY flotsam that bobbed above the leviathan like maw that is the ocean’s unending depths... ... I wonder if the controller will allow for games like COD Warzone, which has different triggers for guns, to allow for different trigger pull efforts on the controller when trying to shoot the gun. Would be interesting! And I’m already looking forward to the Last of Us Part 3! Only 2,600 days to go!

Adam Cohen

Hey MinnMaxers. Mario 3D All-Stars, Mario 35, and NES Fire Emblem are all limited time sales ending on March 31. Do you think Nintendo is setting us all up for some kind of awesome April Fool's joke? I know it actually is probably just a way to spur on sales, and the actual date is the end of the Japanese fiscal year, yada, yada, yada... But it seems way more fun to hear you all make wild guesses about what April Fool's joke is coming our way from Nintendo.

Erkie

Hey, MinnMax crew, Recently was your one year anniversary (congrats again!) and we are now in our 9th/10th month of quarantine. As a result, the majority of MinnMax has been done remotely online. My question is: what will happen once lockdown is over? As a somewhat new member, I’ve only ever seen MinnMax do things remotely. Will it remain that way after the lockdown? Is everyone located in Minnesota to record the podcast in person post-covid? What will change or remain the same with MinnMax as a result? Love y’all!

EJ Crough

Fun Tech Fact! The ps5 remaster of spider-man 2018 is 25% smaller in file size than its ps4 version despite including higher quality assets. The game is made smaller by not having to include repeated data to improve loading speeds on a typical harddrive. source; https://twitter.com/fitzymj/status/1328831734310338560?s=20

Hi, every time I'm losing in a video game and then start winning I say "call me a midwife, because I'm pulling ahead" , how would you rate this as a joke? My brother is extremely grossed out by this but I remind him that childbirth is a beautiful miracle of life. How w

Hey Benny H and da Boyz. This is partly a message to everyone playing Cold War’s campaign. Go into the settings and turn off the hit markers and crosshairs for your weapon. It makes the experience so much more immersive. I find that there is often way too much information on screen and I love games that allow me to customize my hud. What games have you tweaked the settings on before and have made it a better experience?

DJ E Z Cheeze

What’s going on MinnMax crew. I want to give this game thing a shot. I call it Metacritic Pros VS Joes. Can you tell me if the user score is within 3 of the critics score. Love the podcast. (Critics score first)

DJ E Z Cheeze

Until dawn-79-83, Red Dead 2-97-84, God Of War-94-92, Witcher 3-92-92,Horizon Zero Dawn-89-84.

Hey Ben and the MinnMax crew. Something about the Xbox brand always seems slightly out of touch; their unremarkable characters/franchises, their overly safe next-gen console, their over reliance on backwards compatibility. I can't help but feel that Xbox makes as many pro consumer decisions as possible (Game Pass etc), but somehow always feels like they're trying to fit in with the "cool kids". Is the Xbox brand inherently unexciting?

IanTClark

Are any of you fans of the Spider-Man comics? If so, what is your favorite Spidy storyline? Mine is the Acts of Vengeance/Cosmic Spider-Man series from ‘89.

Mark Ramirez

Hey Ben & the crew, Which do you prefer: story-based DLC for a year after launch or no DLC and you know the dev team is starting on the next game right away?

John Ryan

Probably too late to ask a question, but thought I might as well. What's the most haunted video game?

TL

Ben, is the Uptown Funk level in Sackboy: A Big Adventure the best/most fun level of the year? Why is the answer a resounding "yes"? Also, for the crew, what are your favorite examples of "current" hit songs making their way into video games (specifically non-music/rhythm games)? Thanks!

Jonathan Dinh

Hi Ben and the CLC's While eagerly awaiting my PS5 from Costco (thank God for memberships requirements to help with bots) I've been booting up and playing the PS4 a lot recently after being primarily a PC gamer for over a year. In particular, I booted up Uncharted 4 and was immediately shocked at how sluggish it felt. Like it was making me feel sick. This comes not only from the controls themselves but from it being at a locked 30FPS. With both Miles Morales and Demon Souls having a "Fidielity" and "Performance" (4K/60FPS) mode, I hope it becomes a new standard. Action games like Devil May Cry, Platinum Games, shooters, etc. would benefit so much with a 60FPS lock that these consoles can maintain. I think the data will prove that people do want that smoothness that FPS gives us. What do you guys think? Should Fidelity and Performance become standard? Do you have a preference?

bizkiut (Nick S.)

Hey Ben and the CLC's I have been loving my PS5 so far. From the UI overhaul to the snappiness of the SSD. My favorite thing about it has to be the DualSense. I have been so impressed with the way certain games use it (COD with the triggers feeling different for each gun, AstroBot with the rumble for what he is walking on) What has been your favorite aspect of this new gen so far? Thanks! Nick S.

Julian Watkins

Hey Gang, Since striking out on this MinnMax endeavor, effectively walking away from the majors, as it were, do you still get the inside scoops that you were privy to when working at Game Informer? I kind of imagine it's like when someone leaves government office and eventually stops receiving daily briefings; relegated to getting their news more or less like the rest of us as it happens. Are you more so on the outside looking in or is there still a good deal of seeing how the sausages get made? Are you still entrusted with the biggest upcoming release news and gossip that the rest of us plebs are completely ignorant to until it leaks on twitter or makes the front page of G.I. or gets scooped by Jason Schreier? Congrats to Jeff on prolonging the cycle of human existence.
