I know it was discussed in part 1 of the Deepest Dive, but I wanted to reiterate how extremely refreshing it was to play through a game with almost zero main characters that were white (save for the 2 d bags of the game, J Jameson and Simon Krieger). Honestly, can you think of any other games that feature an exclusively POC cast? The only one that comes to mind is San Andreas. Hope we can continue this trend going forward for gaming narratives.

I loved this game but one issue I have with the ending is Phin's sacrificial play. Did anyone else see this coming? To me, this is a cheap way to get a villain/sympathetic character out of making amends for the harms they've caused or to deal with the ramifications of their actions.

Alex

Can we just talk about the diversity in this game for a minute? Its incredible, same sex couples, a completely POC main protagonist cast, non native English speakers (including ASL), and a stellar job in culture appreciation. I was incredibly impressed with the culture representation in Moana as well as Coco, and this game gives both a run for their money.

Peter Slater

Just a small thing but Kyle spoke about killing tonnes of enemies by throwing them off the buildings in the first part of the game. I haven't noticed if its the case in this game but in spiderman 2018 spidey would appear to attach an impact grenade so as they fell they would attach to the nearest building and not just falling to their death

Steve Bellegarde

I didn’t realize how necessary the side content was to the story until my second playthrough. My first run was 100% and I did everything I could as soon as it was available. My second, new game plus run was story only. This changes the impact of the ending significantly!! On the first run, When the people of Harlem hide a unmasked Miles from the press, I was brought to tears! I had helped all these people individually and it made perfect sense for them to declare Miles as “their” Spider-Man. Without this content the ending is left feeling emotionally forced.

Eric Merrill

If Ganke is running the Spider-Man app, wouldn’t it be pretty easy to go after him to get to Spider-Man? Dumb real world thinking I know, but seems like an oversight that he’s so obviously involved directly with Spider-Man.

bizkiut (Nick S.)

Did anyone else have a problem with the camera during the first phase of the final fight with Phin? The camera wouldn't follow me when I hit her up in the air and I would be out of frame hitting her. It made the fight a little harder.

Remy Bach

Another comment if I may: a minor detail I love is when you're on the ground and run by holding R2 and X the controller vibrates a little like a spring slowly getting pressed down and when you release X it does a "fwoom" kind of thing. Super subtle, but I love it every time.

Eric Reitz

Two quick thoughts on the second half of the game: 1. On Fidelity mode (PS5), the game started to run very inconsistently in the last few hours. The framerate had a massive drop causing any swinging around the city to look and feel very choppy. Was I alone in this? 2. Really loved the all the remaining suits in the game. Especially the Reprogrammable Matter one. I thought it just looked cool with the glow on the suit but when I did a finishing move and it created four additional legs like the Infinity War Spidey? *chef's kiss* perfect.

Did anyone in the panel have trouble taking the power levels of the Tinkerer seriously? This was made so much worse after last week's episode where the panel talked about these kids coming up with world altering tech. That stayed in my head the rest of the game and everytime I saw the Tinkerer come up with new things I was just wanted to shout "COME ON, THATS NOT POSSIBLE". I mean by the end of the game she has created laser swords, programmable matter and can fly! The Tinkerer had better tech than Iron man! All this really made it hard for me to suspend my disbelief by the end of the game. OH and then when you finish all the app missions the city gives you a Spidey suit! HOW DID THEY KNOW MY SIZE! These random people even replicated the spiderman AR tech? Ahhhhh

Matt Robinson

Absolutely loved the game and already started my ng+ run. My main hang up with the game though would be the price tag. I really feel like $40 would’ve been a better price. I’m happy to give insomniac my money don’t get me wrong but $50 seems a bit high.

Moonsbro

I cant believe nobody brought this up in the first episode. One of the time capsule collectibles are concert tickets for the X-Man Dazzler and Lila Cheney a less known mutant. I love the X-Men so i am always on the look out for any refrences/easter eggs to them. Easter egg2: You can find a Stan Lee statue outside of the Diner he owned from the first game, you even get a trophy for interacting with it! Easter Egg 3: if you go to the window of Miles's upstairs neighbor you can find an action figure of the Black Suit Spider-Man. this is very strange as insomniac were very explicit about not including any references to the black suit outside of the story

Great credits!

Hey all! Longtime lurker here finally joining the patreon, and just wanted to comment on the mid-late campaign direction they went for Aaron Davis/The Prowler... As much as I love the much more grounded mentor/mentee relationship him and Miles had, I feel like it was a little *too* good; I never bought that they would actually go as far as to physically fight each other to that extent, especially over a disagreement like that. Felt more like the designers cramming in a boss fight for the sake of gameplay, rather than story, because we all know a 5 minute cut scene of them talking out their differences wouldn’t make for a fun gameplay experience to the masses.

Mitchy

As a fellow cat owner, I really sympathise with Derek’s plea to Miles in the Spider-Man side mission. The bonding process *is* important dammit!

Matt Robinson

I really liked the fact that the game starts with the guy painting the mural telling Miles that original spidey is his spider man but ends with the same guy telling the reporters Miles is our spider man.

Hello cohorts! I’d like to go back to part 1’s most popular comment of the Christmas dinner for a minute. Because although it may have been the most popular comment, nobody talked about how that scene ends. For some reason, I can’t stop thinking about this moment, it just bothers me too much. It ends with Miles and Phin doing the dishes together and having a nice conversation that leads to an awkward moment where Miles says, “It’s a date!” and then corrects himself by saying “friend date”, and Phin responds by sarcastically calling him smooth. A little cliché, but so far so good. But then they had to go and ruin it: They both begin to laugh over the awkward moment but then Miles takes it way too far and splashes dirty dish water at Phin! Phin then retaliates back with a splash of her own! Was this super out of place for anyone else? In the context of already being wet, like swimming in a pool or something, a splash is totally normal and playful. But after a nice dinner in your nice clothes, it’s totally uncool! Especially now that we know how much stress Phin was under, I’m surprised she didn’t take Miles out right then and there. Overall I loved the story, I just have a weird hangup on this moment and could not stop thinking about it. Love & Respect! -Beeks from Grand Rapids, MI

Tommy Carver-Chaplin

I really enjoyed this game, but, I think it lacked some of the more poignant and well paced moments of the first. I agree with the gang that it was nice it didn't take ages to play out reveals, but I feel like we never get a chance to feel or see the consequences of changes. In one cut scene you've infiltrated the Underground and in the next it never really matters that you did. Much like was a consensus last week, for me the best moments in these games are the character and world building ones like the dinner scene and I think in the the interest of a pacier game they lost a bit of that. Hailey was my fave.

Tommy Carver-Chaplin

I also think this game failed to make the most of an interesting rogues gallery. Even Prowler was completely under utilised, and I just would have liked a least a side quest of Miles dealing with Peter's world, as much as it was about Spider-man of Harlem.

Tommy Carver-Chaplin

Also one more quick one: I hated the Peter recasting news at face value, but seeing him in this game I love the new kid. Can't wait to see him in the Remaster.

Joshua Duperoy

Hey guys, and Ana, I don’t have much to say about the game that hasn’t already been said expect that I found it refreshing to play an open world game that doesn’t take +50 hours to beat. That being said, anyone read that article on Gameinformer about the dev who put in over 175 hours into Cyberpunk and still hasn’t seen credits. And he’s not even going for 100% playthrough either. How exactly are you guys going to do a deepest dive on this beast?

Harrison Holt

Hi Ben, I missed last weeks episode as the game wasn't out in the UK til this past friday, but I've beaten the game twice over the weekend and gotten the platinum. As for my comment: I just wanted to shout out Fidelity Mode for the second Rhino Boss Fight as well as the Game as a whole from the Science Centre onwards. Those missions are a Raytracing Showpiece and I thoroughly recommend replaying them with it turned on just to see some beautiful lighting. Like others, love the Scavenger Hunt in the postgame. PSA: If you're struggling to get the 100x Combo Trophy, which imo is the toughest Trophy in the game as Miles seems ill-suited to high combos, you might be tempted to replay Roxxon bases or Underground bases to try and get it. Don't do that. Instead, do Combat Challenge 2.0 where you can only take a certain number of hits. The enemies are much weaker, and if you use normal attacks, there are just enough enemies to get to 100 hits.

John Scovic

I doubt it's feasible for developers in every case, but I really loved the length and scope of this game. I have 25 hours logged to get to 100% (not quite the platinum) and it felt perfect. Especially in a busy holiday season with a million other things I want to play, it felt great to get in and out with no bloat. Games like this and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy are probably only possible to price and scope this way because they're being built off of existing engines and assets, but it would be totally fine by me if not every AAA game needed to be a 100 hour open world.

Shakenbake67

Hey MinnMaxers and Other Kyle! What did you guys think of the devs at Insomniac killing off the Tinkerer. I for one thought it was brilliantly done with Phin serving a full arc and the final moment of “Miles, Let go!” was the standout emotional moment of the game. What about you guys?

aaronisnotcool

I felt like the post game post card scavenger hunt was really well done. The most memorable were Prowler and tinker fights but those postcards were a nice little post game adventure.

Ben Ritchie

Did anyone else notice in the final battle that if you got knocked outside or tried to swing out of the building, a short cutscene automatically plays of Phin grappling you back inside? I thought this was a really neat design choice that avoided the need of an invisible wall as well as provided context on why you have to stay inside the building.

BeatenDownBrian

On the last episode you mentioned how you couldn't really fail while swinging. I'm not 100% sure if it's a bug or a feature, but while swinging through the city, I was doing the heel grab trick between a narrow gap, when all of a sudden my foot caught a fire escape which sent me plummeting to the ground, landing right on my tushy. It caught me off guard, but it was funny as heck.

BBK

I really love the size of this game and the number of side activities. It’s a very easily digestible open world, much more-so then 2018’s Spider-Man. Just having a few of each “challenge” type, only 6 enemy bases, a handful of side missions, etc etc was a great move. My platinum run (which requires 2 playthroughs) clocked in at 19 hours, whereas my platinum for 2018’s Spider-Man took about 30-ish hours in a single playthrough. Overall loved this game.

Christopher Reardon

Ok the interaction with Hailey where she gives ends up giving Spidey her scarf, and then that becomes a new suit? Chef's kiss. So good. I'm in love with this game.

TL

Hey all! One thing I wanted to hear your thoughts on is the individuality of Miles vs. Peter. I know a big theme of this game is Miles IS Spider-man, but despite that I still think of Miles as a different and separate Spider-man. I'm not sure the cause of it, maybe it's that Peter has had so many different portrayals at this point, where is Miles is relatively "new"? But I think a larger part of it is that so much that makes Miles "Miles" is the focus on his individuality and background and personality when he's not wearing the suit. The focus on his ethnicity, and his family, the code switching, etc., all feel like things that make Miles "Miles", and aren't necessarily things that make Miles "Spider-man". Whereas Peter Parker has almost become synonymous with "Spider-man", I love that Miles retains his individuality, and feels more like his own character, despite being Spider-man. Hope that made sense! Loved the game, and wanted to say thanks to you guys for everything you do!

Jake Z

Did you notice that Miles' phone battery depletes as you go through the game, ending at 1% battery? Neat touch

The Sideline Crowd

Going through the social media feed throughout the game is a great attention to detail. It serves no purpose to the game and can easily be avoided (unless you want that sweet sweet platinum trophy). Seeing the variety that Insomniac put in gave a great replica of Twitter, and I found some of it genuinely hilarious as if I had seen it in real life myself. Some of my highlights to just name a few: -People confused about Miles swinging around with Cats -Someone taking a picture of the intro holotraining and miles responds to it -Some dude found peanut butter cookies under his bed -I think JJJ followers are called Brushheads? First time commenting, keep up the great work Ben and Crew!

Fred Dinovo

Two musings: 1) Is this the first ever sequel game that tells an origin story? 2) It's kind of wild that the first thing Sony ever showed of this game was Miles absorbing the blast from the bomb at the very end of the game.  Here's the clip from the announcement trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHzuHo80U2M   Loved the game it was a good length and told a great (albeit sad) story

Grizzled Gaming

I had a strange disconnect towards the end of the game. I had just finished the “Thicker Than Blood” main mission where Miles and Uncle Aaron have their battle and falling out. Immediately after that I wrapped up the sound samples (man, I hated those!) and unlocked the Back To the Beginning side quest. I went straight to that and unlocked the Purple Reign suit which Aaaron gives Miles. It was very weird hearing Miles thanking his Uncle Aaron directly after their falling out. Did I play the game wrong?

Noah Ising

Quick correction from the first half of the deepest diver, when kicking enemies off of rooftops they don’t fall to their deaths. They actually get stuck to the side of the building by a spiderweb.

Joe Dean

Hey Spider-Minns, Just like with Spider-Man 2018 they released a tie-in novel for Miles Morales, and it starts with Miles being wrongfully detained after trying to stop a robbery. The villain is The Vulture and his ward Starling. It's called Spider-Man Miles Morales: Wings of Fury. It wasn't the best book, but I enjoyed it. I was enjoying The Prowler's missions of finding sounds until I got to the pigeon sound. I knew what the sound was, but couldn't get close to the stupid pigeons. And just a little outside the mission area was a person feeding a bunch of pigeons with bread so I thought maybe those were the pigeons I needed since they wouldn't fly away. Nope, just needed to camouflage... which I kept forgetting I could do. I got better about using it later on, but man I hate those birds. Signed, Joe Dean PS The "Like Real Scientist" flashback was great and really effective at showing the bond between Miles and Phin. It also helped the player bond with Phin which added more stakes to that final confrontation.

The Krispy Kreme Lemur

Anyone else felt disappointed with the progression of the venom attacks? After a certain point the only venom attacks I used regularly were venom dash and venom smash. This wasn’t helped by the fact that the venom dash ability introduced in the later half of the game was functionally identical to the venom punch. Perhaps a second playthrough on a harder difficulty will force me to use a more varied combat strategy but, overall, I think the game could have done better to diversify the venom attacks and give them more specific applications.

Shawn Mills

Why does every game this year feel the need to include a scene with its main charcters walking through a museum? We did this in Last of Us 2, FFVII remake, and even Animal Crossing. While its becoming a trope, I did enjoy bumping into Doc Ock and Peter in the museum flashback and seeing them back when they were still friends. Thanks for another great deepest dive!

Dominic Falletti

I did the Prowler's sound missions immediately after fighting him in his lair. I found that as he was telling me about my father I was also mourning our relationship. While I was hoping they would have added some small comments by Miles to acknowledge Aaron's betrayal, I still found them moving. So many games use audio logs to fill in disconnected side stories since they may be bypassed by the player altogether. These added to context for Mile's father and Uncle Aaron as well as the city and it's people.

Samier Mukhashen

Something that wasn't touched upon but I think that was neat is the moves you learn from the Challenges are moves from Peter's skill tree from the first game. Very cool idea to have Peter make you do a challenge and then reward you with a skill he learned himself.

Erkie

The part that got me to actually cry was right after Phin’s sacrifice when Miles’s mom screams for her son as he falls from the sky and crashes into the cement; her pain and worry really got to me as she thought she lost her son. Any part make you guys cry?

Joshua Turner

If you would've told me two years ago that the Spider-Man & Tinkerer fight would be better than the Spider-Man & Doctor Octopus fight, I wouldn't have believed you. It was extremely high energy & almost felt like a Dragon Ball Z fight with the way they were throwing each other around.

Patrick Polk

I thought that Animal Crossing: New Horizons was going to easily cruise to "Nicest In-Game Museum of the Year," and then the science museum in Miles Morales came along. It was so fancy! Between the mask, the voice modulation, and attitudes that ranged all the way from "emo and sad" to "angry and breaking stuff," the Tinkerer really reminded me of Kylo Ren, especially in the second half of the game.

Ryan Inderlied

The bowls at the FEAST area that was set up outside the building were HUGE! All that work Peter Parker put in is finally paying off and everyone gets giant bowls of soup.

Andrew George

Just in case SPOILERS for the end of the game I loved the final mission and the ending of the game. Insomniac does a fantastic job of pacing and having having the stakes feel high with the all out war between Roxxon and the Underground in Harlem and the snow storm beating down on the city making visibility incredibly impaired. Gotta say I got a little teary eyed during the final cinematic. All of the residents of Harlem that Miles interacted with throughout the game coming together to protect his identity and declare him their Spider-man was reminiscent of the train scene from Spider-man 2 but had a greater impact on me. I loved it. From a gameplay perspective after finishing this I went back and played through a few hours of the previous Spider-man game. Is it just me or does the swinging in this feel significantly faster than the old game? Miles really books when making his way through town compared to Peter IMO. Lastly did anyone experience a bunch of bugs in this game or is it just me? I haven't had the weird issue with Miles turning into various inanimate objects but I have had multiple Teo's populate his bodega when I visit and during cutscenes with him along with a number of crashes, instances of the game becoming unresponsive when dying during side challenges, or audio cutting out during conversations mid mission.

TheFenwickGhost

Anyone else ever wonder how the Spidermen adjust the force of their punches? I mean the same guy that has the strength to HOLD A BRIDGE TOGETHER is also punching regular humans in the face and somehow not exploding their heads... Yes, I’m sure he toggles it way back when he fights, but every once in a while, especially with a new Spider-Man discovering new powers, don’t you think he might slip up and legit kick a hole through someone’s chest cavity?

Jeremy C.

You guys may not be feeling the haptics/adaptive triggers if you don't have the mic on the controller muted. Haptics and adaptive triggers automatically get set to the weakest setting when the mic is on in the controller.

Morboxis

Alright so that post credits scene: are we thinking Venom Goblin kills Peter in Spiderman 2 and we avenge him as Miles or what?

Chris Logan

I finished the game wearing the 2020 suit and was amazed that the cut scenes accurately reflected this. When the citizens pick up my mask, it's very clear from the animation and sound that it's actually a helmet. And when Miles finally drinks upside down, the helmet has it's own unique way of flipping up to reveal his mouth. I appreciate the details they put into each suit, not just visually but how they behave in different situations

Jeffrey Rommel

To preface, I LOVED the game but a few small quibbles: 1- the puzzles were meh, not intellectually interesting and they added awkward pacing to the game 2- Phin’s character felt a little underdeveloped, her “sorry” at the end of the game was laughable
