In terms of underrated/overlooked games, I have a few - Journey to the Savage Planet, Paradise Killer, Umurangi Generation, and Ikenfell. Loved all of these this year, and I definitely don’t think they’re getting the praise they deserve (except recently Umurangi is getting more and more press, which is awesome to see).!

Do you guys ever thinking about elderly gaming? Right now people that are 60+ didn't grow up with games, so it makes sense there aint that much gaming going on in the old folks home. But I assume that when we get there we'll be playing games more than ever. That being said, do you think the industry will adapt and make gaming more accessible/market towards the elderly as time goes on?? Personally I can't wait join an old geezer Melee league. - Cooper from L.A.

Would you be more or less interested in free living games if they had a scheduled “server shut down” end date?

Hello, I saw another new location for Hitman 3 has been released and I know Leo is a huge Hitman fan. My question is if you could have your dream location for a Hitman level, where would you want? I think a mission on a cruise ship or at a sports stadium would provide a lot of opportunities and be fun (and maybe nostalgic to a pre-COVID time).

I haven't seen too much coverage, but Pokémon had one of the best years ever. Pokémon Home scratches that itch of being able to carry all your Pokémon with you and showing off to friends. Two pretty fantastic DLC drops for Pokémon Sword and Shield brought back some favorites, streamlined legendary Pokémon captures and showed the direction Pokemon Company is taking the series. A favorite of mine that got a release in 2020 is the 1.0 release of Factorio. I'm sure fans of management sims were well aware of this, but if not this game is an absolute time sink for people that link to create sprawling factories. Tons of mods to increase re-playability make this on par with games like Rimworld in my book.

Hey Benny and the Benny Singers. I love RPG battle systems but hate fantasy and anime. Eternal Sonata, for example is an absolute masterclass in combat but I can't stand the rest of the game. What am I to do?

wittynicknamehere .

Smooches, gang. I can't tell if I'm being an unpleaseable jerk, or if I have a valid grievance here, so I leave it to you to tell me. I can't help but feel mildly disappointed that we're in a supposedly new generation of muscular consoles capable of vastly more than we knew before, but somehow we still have to choose whether we want next-gen graphics or next-gen framerates with so many games. Shouldn't this have been a concentration for Sony and Microsoft? And is this the sort of thing that you expect to be remedied with another round of half-measure "console refresh" boxes in a few years?

Toby Martin

My favourite most overlooked game was probably Dreams which I know was in Beta last year but about a week after it launched I rarely heard anyone talk about it which is sad because it’s something I love popping into each week and seeing the weird stuff other players have made

DOOM Eternal is hugely underrated, or at least misunderstood. Did you know that at any given time there are 4 cooldowns and 3 meters to keep track of? It is a truely fresh FPS, one that plays more like a MOBA than a Call of Duty. When you play on Ultra Violence or higher, the speed and strategy of combining all of your guns and other tools against distinct demons while managing cooldowns doesn't even feel like a shooter anymore. It feels like a complex turn-based rpg that runs at 100 mph. The difficulty is only important because the lower options don't force you to grapple with these systems, which could result in Eternal feeling like a messy shooter. The higher difficulties don't make the same game harder, they make it a different game, a GREAT game.

Hey MinnMaxers! What’s a genre you can’t get into? For me it’s platforming games like Mario, Crash.

Hey, cohorts! If you weren't working in the gaming industry, what do you think you'd be doing? Do you have a secondary passion you'd follow? Or did you have a fallback job, in case working in this industry didn't work out?

Greetings, Do you think games on the PS5 / Series X will eventually spare us the choice between framerate and fidelity, or do you think this will be the selling point of pro models of the consoles?

IanTClark

So far I’ve played 27 game that have released this calendar year (I’m not counting any new DLC, demos, or remasters). Of those 27, I’ve only rolled credits on 5 of them. Some of these new games, like Spellbreak and Bleeding Edge, aren’t games that have traditional campaigns. What percentage of new releases do you typically see through to the end or at least give a significant amount of your time?

Ben Shively

I’ve been a video game collector for basically my entire life, and some items have been more worth collecting than others. Items such as the Max Payne 3 Collectors Edition and the Battlefield 1 Statue are items that I cringe at every time I see them. On the contrary, Rule of Rose on PS2 CIB (complete in box) is something I got for dirt cheap and now it sells for $500+ on eBay. What are some of your best and worst video game collectible purchases?

Zach Killian

Hello Minnmax! I was going through some old boxes recently and found a few old strategy guides I had back in the day for Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and Mass Effect. What strategy guides did all of you own? What was the last strategy guide you purchased? Love the show keep up the great work! Zach Killian

Tactical Dreamer

Hello Ben and friends, Very important question for you this week. Egg nog, yay or nay? Thanks, Tactical Dreamer

Aidan Tatman

I've honestly been a bit confused by the lack of love that's been given to Legends of Runeterra this year. Maybe the game is just not doing well in terms of playerbase, or perhaps the flop that was Artifact has hurt media coverage of CCGs in general, but I've been shocked at how little I've seen on the many fantastic updates the game has received this year. They've hit a good cadence of adding new cards/events into the game, all while mostly raising money through cosmetics and giving away a steady amount of content for free to players. Mobile version is pretty smooth too, would recommend to anyone interested in a new CCG, whether a lapsed Hearthstone player or new to the genre.

Nick from Atlanta

Hello Cohorts! We look a lot a games at their launch, but we don't spend as much time analyzing their lifespan unless it's something very long term like Rainbow Six Siege, or Apex Legends. What's been the best free update for a game this year? I'm talking limited time events, free DLC, or even something as simple as an awesome patch. My vote, which is in no way biased, is the Fatalis update for Monster Hunter World. Not only is the fight one of the best (if not THE best) in the series, the rewards for it in terms of armor and weapons are amazingly useful as well. Plus, you can turn your Palico into a tiny Fatalis that holds a Hunter toy as its weapon. Love to hear what you think! Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Matthew Steen

Hello friends! In honor of Immortals: Fenyx Rising, what is game name that you would like to change? And what would you change it to?

John Utke

Have you all heard of RetroAchievements.org? It's a really cool community of people adding achievements to old games, you just play in an emulator and they unlock automatically and are added to your profile. Anyway, my question is, would achievements make you go back and replay an old game? If so, which game? Also, do you think Nintendo will ever come out with an Achievements system? I think they should just ripoff their own Smash Wall system, with golden hammers and everything. Would be a really cool way to earn Switch themes.

Ryan

Hey Cohorts, With all the end of year lists and reviews coming in soon I was wondering what has been the biggest disconnect between your own opinions on a game and the public at large?

Doreen Ford

I'll put it out there that I think Resident Evil 3 is one of the *most notable* underappreciated game of the year. Jill and Carlos were great characters, the gameplay was much improved and less puzzles is a plus for me. I found Nemesis less frustrating than Mr. X (who is scary at first but then just annoying) and (in RE2make) zombies who are too spongy with a story/writing/voice acting I found generally underwhelming. I know I'm in the minority here but RE3make is underappreciated, dang it!

Felipe Mesquita

Maybe critically its at the deserved level, but it seems to me that comercially and in terms of the gaming community conversation, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time isnt as hot and IMO deserves more praise. It both brough the best aspects of the classics, while giving some modern twists that didnt feel like gimmicks, only making this a better game. Maybe the $60 price tag hurt the title, but it has so much content that I feel its a justified asking price. Back me up here Hanson!

Kyle Silva

I got a challenge for you guys. Let's see who can draw Mario's face the best within the duration of the Mario drawing theme on Ben's Game & Watch. I'd love to see everyone's gorgeous Mario faces done in only 30 seconds with the guidance of the lyrics. Don't forget about adding the little bird.

Alex K.

I thought I would just would just put in my vote for most underappreciated game this year Troubleshooter - Abandoned children This is a Tactical RPG that was released last April, made by a small Korean indie studio. And it has a depth and scope that puts games like Xcom to shame. It has everything you could want and more for the genre, yet no one has heard of it. I could write up every little thing the game has to offer, but it would take up to much of everyone's time. Ill just say that if your a fan of the genre, and don't mind some slightly funky translations, this game is still being updated and is worth a shot.

Jason Kelley

Hey y’all, who is your dream celebrity patron, and ho much would you freak out if they subscribed?

EngelNUL

Hey Age of Benpires and the Cohortadors, I would like to take a minute to show my appreciation for all the retail workers and delivery people making this ridiculous season manageable. I worked 7 Christmas seasons in video game retail, including 5 with Gamestop. I worked every system launch from PS2 to Wii and many a midnight COD releases. 2020 is harder than all of those and I sincerely appreciate all the people that are getting video games into my hands one way or another. Do you have any specific instances in the last few months of a particularly positive interaction you can share? With all the horror stories coming out of a certain companies leadership, it would nice to hear some positive words for the grunts of the gaming industry.

Clint Farley

Hey MinnMax crew, hope everyone is doing well. I just started playing Assassin's Creed Valhalla on PS5 and I had a glitch where when I killed my first opponent the game popped two bronze trophies. When I looked up what they were for they were both story related for future missions. I've never experienced this kind of glitch before and it prompted me to think of one of the funniest glitches I've experienced. In WWF Smackdown! on PS1 I was Tag Team partners with Matt Hardy. During the campaign I had to do a 1v1 against Matt and halfway through the match, Matt Hardy comes running down from back stage to the ring to help me out, as tag team partners do. So now it’s me and Matt Hardy….wrestling Matt Hardy. What were some of the strangest or funniest glitches you've experienced in a game, that wasn't something that became a nightmare due to a review deadline?

The Krispy Kreme Lemur

Hi Ben and the Minnmax crew, I’ve had a lot of difficulty over the years trying to start several long running video game series with 90s or early 00s roots. I’ve found that starting with early entries in many series is difficult since the games often have not aged well and/or are difficult to track down on modern platforms. On the other hand, later entries may be more playable by modern standards, but they also often rely on the player’s knowledge of preestablished lore and gameplay mechanics. With this in mind, I’d like to see everyone select a game from any of the following series that can best help a newcomer understand the series’ roots while still being enjoyable by today’s standards: - Final Fantasy - Metal Gear - Assassins creed - Suda 51 games (not really a series I know but still hard for a newcomer to jump into) - Hitman - Resident Evil Love the show, keep it up 😊

The Sideline Crowd

Hello Ben and Crew! I've always found video game  media adaptions interesting for better or for worse. We had Sonic this year that was a surprise, Castlevania has been popular on Netflix, and then we have had stuff like Super Mario Bros and the nightmare fuel of the Donkey Kong Country tv show. My question is: You are now given the power to make whatever adaption of a video game series that you want. You have unlimited resources, you can get whatever talent you want (actors, directors etc), and can make as many films or seasons that you need to tell your story. Keep in mind: Your adaption can't be cancelled, but it is not exempt from critics praising it or ripping it apart. What do you make? Keep up the good work and keep watching the Skis! I mean Skies

Holden Hintz

The single most under-appreciated and overlooked game of 2020 is a witch themed rpg known as Ikenfell. A turn based sprite game that feels somewhat similar to earthbound in its over world and a cross between paper Mario and fire emblem in its combat. With a killer soundtrack and a charming story, it makes for a very complete game that doesn’t get the recognition because it’s very indie and was kickstarted.

PandaHandz

Hi you all! Ignore this sentence, sorry if this posted twice but patreon was acting funny. The most under appreciated game of 2020 IMO is Watchdogs 2, playing this game in 2020 was way too on the nose for the, calling out social media misinformation, big tech manipulating civil unrest. If there wasn't a VR game yet, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Election Simulator! Which brings me to the real under appreciated game, Beat Saber! Keeping fit in a pandemic with some cool beats kept the lbs away... for a while. Lol

MickManga

Well thinking of underappreciated games of 2020. Might I bring up Rune Factory 4 Special, I feel like being it came out so close to Animal Crossing New Horizons it got buried. But if you give it a shot, you'll find one of the best farming sim games of the year. And shout out to The Longing for being one of the most interesting indie games of the year that no has played. I don't want to spoil anything.

Tanner Methven

Hey everyone, At the transition from one generation to another, we understandably want to reflect on the best last gen had to offer. However, I’ve been trying to put together in my head what the most important games of the generation were, not necessarily the best. Wondering what your picks for this list would be. So far I have fortnite, which I don’t think needs much explanation. Destiny, which most prominently put forth the “roadmap” games as a service model that every AAA publisher wants to get in on. And No Man’s Sky, which I would argue has cemented the idea that a not great game can be made great after launch (see rainbow six siege and ff14). Would love to hear your takes on this, and once again, it’s not necessarily about good games, but the ones that represent or dramatically influenced this last gen. Love the show, hope everyone had as good a thanksgiving as can be had at the moment. -Tanner Methven

Jeeo Banogy

Hey Guys and Gals! Managed to finally finish Horizon: Zero Dawn! While I was going through the ending, I couldn't help but notice how it dragged on a bit, and that got me thinking about game endings in general. What was the most satisfying game ending that you've ever had the pleasure to play through? Hope that the Holiday that came treated you well, and that the Holidays ahead treat you even better!

Shawn Mills

Since both Star Trek and Star Wars have TV shows that are streaming right now, my question is why hasn't Star Trek been able to break into the video game space the same way that Star Wars has? Are shooting phasers just not as fun as swinging lightsabers in an interactive medium? What could a developer do to make a great AAA Star Trek game at this point?

James Smith

Hey Hanson and the Hound Dogs, Let's plaaaaaaaaaay Crusader Kings 3 Patch Notes: Real or Fake? (Self-explanatory): - Children can become more inclined to drink later in life if their guardians are a poor influence (real) - Wards will no longer apologise after an unsuccessful assassination attempt (fake) - The Cucumber King is no longer unintentionally a kinslayer, due to a wrongly assigned father (real) - Characters are no longer angry at their new friends (real) - Fixed a child’s favorite toy crashing the entire game (real) - The pope can no longer initiate a holy war on the player's faction (fake) - If you try to make too many children your wards you’ll now be told off in a strongly worded letter (real) - Intelligent women no longer confront their pregnant lesbian lover to ask if they are the father of that child. Stupid women however, still have a chance to ask that question (real)

With all the nonstop hype around cyberpunk 2077 this year, im surprised I haven't heard more about cloud punk which is in my opinion the best cyberpunk game on the market right now. You are a taxi driver in a cyberpunk city just driving people from place to place, picking up lore and little stores that just kind of build up the dystopic city that you're living in. There's no combat a no real gameplay aside from driving around in a flying car and then occasionally getting out to pick up collectibles and talk to people. It has a everything I think anyone would want out of a cyberpunk game it's always raining it's always night there's neon signs there's flying cars everyone's miserable and the buildings go up higher than you can see. It's really fantastic and I think it needs a lot more attention. Check it out! PS I didn't work on the game seriously I just think it's really good

Preston Willke

Hey IceBox and the little Giants! My wife and I are moving north this Summer. We're from Houston, so any north is too cold at our current level. We're asking for must-have cold-weather items from our family for Christmas. Soooo at this point. What are your favorite, go-to, ole reliable cold weather wear. Longjohns? A down vest? Sweet trench coat? I need to know!

Joe Kafchinski

What's the most money you've ever spent on one game and, in retrospect, do you think it was money well spent? (This question brought to you by my steadily growing Genshin Impact budget, which is still light years behind my Simpsons: Tapped Out money pit.)

Bob Buel

Howdy cohorts! I gotta say the most underappreciated game of 2020 is Mario 35. Is it perfect? Of course not. But I feel like it didn't even make a splash, and it certainly deserves better than that. It is a fantastic twist on the proven classic formula of Super Mario Bros 1, with levels showing up in random order, a fast paced clock ticking down forcing you to perform well to add to the timer, and all enemies you kill being sent over to other people's games (and vice versa) which leads to some amazing challenges to overcome like a wall of Bowsers or waves of Lakitus showing up in literally any level. I've put 30+ hours into this game, beating every level, winning 45 times and even unlocking Luigi as a secret playable character. This is up there with my favorite games of 2020, and yes a lot of it is just a nostalgia trip for Mario Bros 1, but this battle royale twist on it brings enough new to the table that it deserves a spotlight. Thanks

Jake Z

One of the most underappreciated games of the year is Predator Hunting Grounds. I had a ton of fun playing it earlier this year with friends and picked it up again recently. It came out around when COVID lockdowns began and it was a great way to spend time with friends.

YARF

I was mulling over the space game “Observation” which came out on Xbox One this year, and how it was under appreciated.. but while thinking about space, and the game, I went down the rabbit hole... I thought this might be enjoyable, for perspective, and because number crunching is the best way to help our little tiny baby minds better comprehend knowledge that is, frankly, beyond our ken. The andromeda galaxy is ~2.5 million light years away. Light travels at ~168,000 miles per second. 168,000 multiplied by 60 seconds in a minute, multiplied by 60 minutes in an hour, multiplied by 24 hours in a day, multiplied by 7 days in a week, multiplied by 52 weeks in a year... So by those calculations, light travels ~6 trillion miles per year. So 6 trillion multiplied by 2.5 million light years away equals a number I don’t know how to say. That is how far the andromeda galaxy is from Earth. Let’s say we got in a rocket ship to get there, traveling 18,000 miles per hour. Divide the incomprehensibly large number of miles Earth is from andromeda galaxy, by 18,000 miles per hour, and you get an unbelievably large number still, for how many hours it would take to get to andromeda in a rocket. Divide that number by 24 hours in a day and you get ~34.7 trillion days to reach andromeda at 18,000 miles per hour. Divide that by 364 days in a year and it would take ~95.4 billion years to reach andromeda. The universe is (if you can believe it) only ~13.8 billion years old. So if we had a rocket with infinite resources, and nothing killed us on the way, we could reach andromeda in the time it would take the universe to live out the entirety of its 13.8 billion year existence, another 6.9 times over. If humans lived consistent 120 year life spans, when we finally got to the andromeda galaxy, from the first pilot on Earth to begin the journey in the rocket ship, to the DISTANT descendant that finally got there, 800 million+ generations of families would have come and gone on that rocket, through the long gone eons of time immemorial. What a journey... andromeda might have changed a little bit by the time we got there, and we may no longer even look like humans, or speak the same language, or even know who started the journey in the first place, nor why... but, all the same, what a view! Anyway, thought experiments and number crunching are fun! And, when regarding the cosmos, a bottomless spring, from which an infinite amount of existential dread may be drawn from to haunt our small, infinitesimal, so-brief-they-could-be-said-to-have-never-happened-at-all, little, tiny, human, baby lives... Here’s to Earth!

Sam Morrow

Happy holidays to Hanson and his fellow merry crew. I recently started Assassins Creed Valhalla and found myself enjoying it. During my time, I’ve found myself using weapons that are more appealing to me either visually or gameplay wise. This means not actively equipping the gear with the highest stats or most damage. Do any of you find yourself using guns, swords, armor, or gear in other games that are objectively weaker intentionally?

Yarrow

Hey friends, with games like Yakuza Like a Dragon making big changes in regards to its fighting system and being well regarded, what other franchises would you guys like to see get this treatment and overhaul their gameplay for the next entry?

Donnie

Hey friends! Recently Leo completely ruined Cyberpunk 2077 for me with that major Meep Morp spoiler. Rude! Anyway, have you ever had anything spoiled that actually hindered your enjoyment of the thing itself?

Garrett Becker

Helllloo B.H. And dem doodes. Why aren’t there more superhero games? There is a deep well of phenomenal comic book characters that have not been in a video game or at least a modern game. Where is my Green Arrow game that is basically just Far Cry 3? Where is my Green Lantern Corps game that is an epic space adventure? Where is my Hitman style Punisher game that is super dark and full of violence and moral ambiguity? Where is my Moon Knight game that dives into trippy Egyptian mythology and mental illness as I fight crime in an open world?! Do I have to go make these games myself?! Am I the only one that wants obscure but amazing superhero video games?! Are these good sounding games or am I alone here? Can you think of any not so obvious comic book characters that would fit well in a video game?

BeatenDownBrian

Hey, Ben and crew. Are virtual horses in danger of losing their jobs? With the new consoles making fast travel actually fast, as well as allowing for faster traversal across a world, will this change how players explore a world? and what, if any impact to you think it will have on game design? Just personally, I noticed myself using fast travel a heck of a lot more than I usually do when I was cleaning up collectables in Miles Morales, and I couldn't help but wonder if I was missing out on some of the small secrets hidden across the city by doing so.

Hey guys, When pizza is on a bagel can you truly eat pizza anytime?
