https://youtu.be/SqFaCDvHxU4 Out of Tartarus from Hades is my favorite track of the year. Make sure to listen to some of the beginning AND the transition at 3:00. The way it's implemented in game is also great. It's used for boss fights- when you're talking to the boss before the fight starts it's the beginning quieter part, when you start fighting it seamlessly does the transition at 3:00, and it hits the big ending chord when you win the fight. Great stuff as always from Darren Korb

There's been so much good music this year in games, it's hard to pick just one. I'm going to go with FFVII Remake - Hollow Skies - https://youtu.be/PafSGhH8rwQ. In a game full of incredible remixes, this original composition for the remake ended up being a stand out.

Tim Lorow

The ultimate game album is without a doubt Hades! Darren Korb made yet another masterpiece album that mixes rock, electronic, and Greek motifs that is the perfect backdrop for the game. The most quintessential track from this album is “Scourge of the Furies” which is groovy and driving to keep you in the gameplay flow. https://open.spotify.com/track/2OCOsaORs3HhmybcodGSUH?si=VRAej2EESQSf2WGiyA9n_A I also like “From Olympus” which is slower but features beautiful three part harmonies between the guitar, mandolin(?) and bass parts. https://open.spotify.com/track/0PijoCJtD6iTbaLgvVVIPp?si=IPWRXEVKQxe8B3uxx4cnrw My favorite is “On the Coast” but mostly because this is when [spoiler redacted]. The airy percussion combined with the solo woodwind that builds to an orchestra swell is... tear-jerking. https://open.spotify.com/track/23mXpdnCEOmXDxqAZUaYyA?si=Q5HoUCJTSiGVGS8DP4YaPA

Persona 5 The Royal- Mementos - Upper Layer This track made a particular area from the original game more enjoyable to return to. Its dark and groovy, and I love it. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TGDe0C2YmjE

Joshua

Based on how worried people are of the console version of the game, if you could only play cyberpunk on a base ps4 or stadia which would you pick?

Hyperlight Blossom

What’s the underdog in the industry you’re rooting for? For Kyle, I’d imagine it’s Stadia, which I appreciate his level headed critiques of. For me it’s Anthem Next even with the circumstances at Bioware. I hate when topics like these, or Fallout 76, or Avengers come up and people hurl insults. It was funny the first time, but ideally, shouldn’t we want everything to succeed on it’s own merit, serving the communities they foster? (I understand the opinion that these games shouldn’t have been made in the first place, but they were, and now they almost have an obligation to improve.) Thanks !!!

Sir Phobos

Praetor of Mercury by Aeternam. It was in a Borderlands 3 DLC

Hello people! I think pretty much the whole Final Fantasy VII Remake soundtrack is phenomenal, so it's impossible for me to choose my favorite one, but I'm submitting "Smash 'Em, Rip 'Em" (a remix of Tifa's theme), because it's so different to all the other tracks in the game, and I absolutely loved the part where it plays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hT2VbBAWJbA Gotta listen to the full first minute to truly appreciate it. :) [Honroable mentions: Ignition Flame (ROCHE ROCHE ROCHE), The Oppressed - Beck's Badasses, Airbuster, J-E-N-O-V-A Quickening, Seven Seconds til the End and so many more... Midnight Rendezvous, Jessie's Theme... sorry, I'll stop. Flowers blooming in the Church.]

Hi Ben and the Cohorts, You mentioned board games on MinnFAQs and given here in the UK we're also stuck at home over Christmas, can you recommend some? Don't spoil any Christmas surprises you might have planned, but a few hints about games to play with either the family (10 & 7 year olds), or just for me and the wife would be much appreciated! P.S. Isn't Take on Me by A-ha the clear song of the year, what with it turning up everywhere?!

Humza R

The FF7R soundtrack has too many good tracks to choose from, but the Air Buster theme is my favorite rendition of the ff7 battle theme. Honorable mentions are the Wall Market theme variations and the Valkyrie track.

Doreen Ford

Melody of Memory necessarily has some of the best video game music of 2020 given it collects a *ton* of Kingdom Hearts/Disney/Square Enix songs. However, what's been in my head lately is CALLING which comes from The World Ends With You. https://youtu.be/1twS6jyJVU8 and it's just an absolute bop.

Tadatoo

Favorite song of the year is 5pm from animal crossing. It’s a bop https://youtu.be/uLtJIPu-Cns QOTW: I don’t know if I maybe missed it, but what’s your opinion on the new The World Ends With You game?

Edgar Vazquez

Persona 5 had the best OST in 2017 and Royal is not slouch this year. Here is my favorite track from P5R, it's called Prison Labor. The sad part is you only get hear this song during paid DLC challenge fights which work more like a puzzle than a regular boss fight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZBctlmOUZE

Hey, I get to be the first person to submit a quiz this week! This time, it's the science and videogames crossover we've all been waiting for: Alien or Extremophile! The CLCs must guess whether each species listed below is an Alien race from a videogame or an Extremophile: animals that live in the most inhospitable environments on Earth. We'll start with a gimmee: - Tardigrade (Extremophile) also known as water bears, this little roly-poly microorganism lives nearly everywhere on Earth and is famed for having survived trips to outer space - Artemia (Extremophile) brine shrimp that can live in fully saturated salt water. They can also be bought out of the back of comic books and make the world's lamest pet. - Cragmite (Alien) the militaristic enemies of Ratchet and Clank - Eridian (Alien) the progenitor species of the Borderlands franchise - Euophrys (Extremophile) aka the Himalayan jumping spider, living at elevations over 22,000 feet, including the top of Mt. Everest, it is believed to be the highest "permanent resident" on Earth - Icebug (Extremophile) a wingless insect that lives on glaciers and mountaintops in Japan, North America and Siberia - Nexosporidium (Alien) the cloned cyborg army of the Destroy All Humans franchise - Paralvilnella (Extremophile) this "sulfide worm" that lives in proximity to underwater hydrothermal vents has an upper thermal limit classified as "unknown" - Sangheili (Alien) the primary warrior species (i.e., the Elites) of Halo's Covenant - Vortigaunt (Alien) the three-armed, six-eyed aliens used as Combine slaves and soldiers in Half-Life

Hello friends! I just started Miles Morales yesterday and was struck by warm Christmas vibes, obviously amplified by how close we are to Christmas. It got me thinking, is this the only game set during Christmas?? How is this possible? With the amount of Christmas movies and music, how do we not have more Christmas themed games??

Edgar Vazquez

Hey CLCs, Is there a quintessential Christmas game? While I don't tend to replay games, I hear a lot of people have comfort games they play over the holidays. So, while the rest of family is enjoying Die Hard for their Christmas tradition, what game will you be playing?

TommenDotGif

My favorite song this year was definitely "Good Riddance" from Hades https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yco-B4BSaj4 After how intense the combat is, going into Eurydice's chamber and getting hit with this calming song was so meaningful. Then, you hear Orpheus sing it with a completely different, melancholic tone in the House of Hades. Then, *minor spoilers?*, you get their duet in Eurydice's chamber after finishing their sidequest and it was one of the most emotional moments of the year for me. Orpheus's story is so tragic, but the different versions of that song take you on a journey during that game and I absolutely loved it.

Joshua Wiljanen

Based on the quality of the Astrobot Rescue Mission soundtrack, it must be something from Astro's Playroom.

The Sideline Crowd

Hello Ben Hanson and the Cannibal Crew! All the talk of eating things got me thinking (and a little hungry). With the winter holidays upon us, I've got a little hypothetical game of which video game characters would you rather eat for holiday dinner? 1. Mario or Luigi 2. Yoshi or Sonic 3. Leon Kennedy or Barry Burton 4. Doom Guy or BJ Blazkowitz 5. Kirby or Pikachu 6. Little Mac or Mike Tyson 7. Arthur Morgan or Dutch 8. Nemesis or Tyrant 9. Waluigi or Tingle 10. Pac-Man or Mr. Game and Watch 11. Donkey Kong or Banjo 12. Cyberpunk Keanu Reeves or NBA Jam Bill Clinton Bonus: Basically what Pokemon would you eat I'd you had to?

Rich McLaughlin

Hey Cohorts! Last week during GALOT you talked about Xbox running emulators. As an Xbox developer, I thought I'd answer some of your questions. Is it easy to switch between modes? Yep, it just requires a reboot between either Dev Mode or Retail Mode. Will you get banned? I'd say no, while running in dev mode, you can't run any retail games or apps. It's not a cheating loophole, it's a way for developers to run and test their own code. If you choose to use it to install emulation software, you accept the risk of installing non-retail software. If you're new to emulation, don't start with your Xbox, start with a Raspberry Pi.

How goes it, cohorts?! We’ve seen it many times from gaming companies: they have incredible success and then in order to continue increasing profits for investors they make a series of baffling anti-consumer moves that end up hurting the company long-term. (Some of the biggest examples being PS3 era sony, early Xbox 1 era microsoft, end of Wii era Nintendo. Xbox has continued to be great in this area and Sony has been better than I would have thought going into PS5. But Nintendo has been making some baffling decisions lately: releasing multiple games for a limited time, cancelling one of the biggest Melee tournaments of the year over Slippi, canceling a Splatoon 2 tournament over player names referring to that cancelled Melee tournament, and shutting down a charity event over joy-cons that have a design printed on them based around the charity they were raising money for. These are all things that Nintendo could partner with to help boost rather than eliminating them entirely. We’ve seen other company’s do this: other fighting game companies have turned a blind eye to online mods and even embraced some, and Sonic Mania’s origins is a good example of this as well. With all this said,) has Nintendo officially entered it’s next era of overly-cocky nintendo? Thanks for all your hard work, you’ve been crushing it! Love & Respect -Beeks from Grand Rapids, MI P.s. feel free to take out the stuff between the parentheses if it’s too much and the context is not needed.

Fred Dinovo

Howdy all, We had a music related discussion in the discord today that you should chime in on: what kind of instrument is the piano? String? Percussion? It's probably both, Fred

Hugo Aguilar

Hey MinnMaxers, Has a game ever ruined your experience with another game? I made the mistake of playing Sekiro right before Ghost of Tsushima, and while they’re both different games. GoT got very boring going into act 2. Enough that I completely stopped playing.

Adam Cohen

Hey Minnesota Maximizers, As I was playing AC Valhalla recently, and was methodically moving from dot to dot on my screen, picking up all the loot in the room, I started to wonder just how much loot I've collected, and much of it not used, over the course of my life. Thinking about each individual pickup of all the items, gear, currency, weapons, etc, it probably numbers in what, the hundreds of thousands? Millions? Have I wasted my life? Why am I still compelled to double check every nook and corner of every video game room to make sure I didn't miss anything?

Ben Shively

I am currently in the process of getting the platinum trophy for Demon’s Souls, and I have almost given up several times due to the annoying nature of some of the trophies. However, even when I was about to quit, I feel an obligation to continue on because of how much I love the game as a whole. Are there any times in gaming where you have almost outright given up on, but your love for the game kept you going?

Beau Bakken

Dearest Sir Baron Toot and the MuCkLuCks My eight year old daughter has been telling me how she and her classmates play a version of Among Us during recess and I think it’s kind of awesome. They line up with their eyes closed and a teacher pats one on the head quietly choosing an imposter. Then as they walk around the playground the imposter “kills” by sticking his/her tongue out at someone without anyone else noticing. The murdered kid has to immediately fall to the ground until someone else notices which of course triggers a voting meeting on who is the imposter. Have you heard of other videogame to life adaptations? I assume paintball battle royales are a thing?

tbeeks15

Hello cohorts! This song didn’t technically come out this year but with Xenoblade Chronicles' weird original release I feel like it is worth revisiting this year for the deluxe edition. This series is incredibly overlooked, especially in regards to its music. I believe it should be right up there with the Final Fantasy's and Zelda's of the world. Also, this game is not as complex as it seems. This was one of my first JRPG’s other than Pokemon and it was much easier than I thought it would be. Play this game people! Keep up the great work everyone! Love & Respect -Beeks from Grand Rapids, MI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnVemwebkiY

Joseph Dowdy

Hello Minnmaxers! If scientists could successfully recreate one video game weapon or tool, what would you like to see? I personally would like a Portal Gun.

Donnie

Hey friends! What’s something you’ve learned about yourself this year? For myself, I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that I don’t always handle isolation as well as I think, and I’ve had to find new ways to occupy my time outside of work. Video games haven’t been enough, so I’ve gotten into painting mini figures and even writing a novel! It’s been a challenging year but I’m glad to say I’ve found some ways to grow.

YARF

For 7 long years, since the original CyberPunk 2077 trailer, I have been HAUNTED, by the cutscene as the militarized police fire at the woman. The bullets do not make sense... look at that trailer from 30 seconds in to 40 seconds in... that isn’t right! 1.) the projectile is basically the size of a normal unspent bullet, with the casing still attached to the projectile. 2.)Even if you say, “it is a futuristic weapon” when the bullet casing is ejected, it looks like it shot out a projectile the size of a grain of sand. The projectile coming out of the weapon COULD NOT fit in the casing that gets ejected. It looks like the weapon fired WHOLE unspent bullets and ejected WHOLE unspent bullets. Quality assurance people, SHEESH! IT RUINED MY MARRIAGE!

MickManga

You wake up and you find you are all of the best player in the world at a single game. It could be any video game, board game or card game, but you can only choose a single game. What game is it and why?

Jeorin

What's the worst bug you've ever encountered in a video game? Did you finish the game despite the bug? The worst I've encountered was Phantasy Star IV. I loved the game deeply and decided to get every character to max level. When you get into the high 90s, a bug corrupts your characters, ruining their stats and abilities to the point where it's difficult to even complete the game anymore. Still love the game, but wow was that punishing!

Joshua Caleb

Hey Ben and the MinnieMaxies, So I'm sure everyone has heard the hubbub about Cyberpunk giving Game Informer editor Liana a seizure due to how closely the Brain Dance scenes mimic real life medical seizure-testing headsets. The thing is, the code reviewers were given didn't have a clear seizure warning and something this extreme wouldn't have gotten past Sony and Microsoft's certification process. This combined with all the bugs reported in the reviews, it still seems like CDPR is rushing this game out. Do you think they should have delayed this game till next year and launched it on all consoles simultaneously and maybe with more of these issues patched out on the disc?

Chree McGee

Man Hanson and the Patreon-ky, One of my favorite songs this year is from one of the underappreciated games mentioned last week: Paper Mario and The Origami King. It's called Sweetpaper Valley, and it really is just a very fun, catchy take on a whistle, Morricone western theme. https://youtu.be/W9Ip0Zro6jY

The Diddler

A small game. 20 Rapid fire questions. Only 7 seconds to answer. The people playing can just blurt out their answers or if that is too hectic, I’m sure you will figure out a better way to play. The questions: 1.) Favorite game series? 2.) Favorite game of 2020? 3.) Which game series needs to make a come back? 4.) Most difficult boss fight? 5.) Your favorite boss fight? 6.) Best Easter egg? 7.) Favorite fighting game move? 8.) Best Mario power-up? 9.) Dante or Vergil? 10.) Would you rather have a FF6 remake or a Chrono Trigger Remake? 11.) Favorite game creator? 12.) Weirdest thing you’ve encountered in a game? 13.) Resident Evil or Silent Hill series? 14.) Most frustrating NES game? 15.) Best controller? 16.) What’s one game you would like to have in VR? 17.) Kiryu or Majima? 18.) Most disappointing game of 2020? 19.) Best town in an RPG? 20.) Dragon Age or Mass Effect?

Jason Wojnar

Hi People Has a game actually changed your behavior in every day life or changed your life in some way? I don't mean like it made you cry or was exceptionally cathartic but really made you do something new in your life. Metal Gear Solid 5's stressing of culture's connection to language made me start learning Spanish, a spark which eventually led me to an interest in several different world cultures. Jason Wojnar, Kyiv, Ukraine

Joshua Duperoy

Hey y’all, I just wanted to recommend the main theme track from Yakuza: like a dragon (ichiban ka) by Shōnan no Kaze and Yasutaka Nakata. Even though I don’t understand any of the lyrics it’s just such an uplifting and positive song much like the rest of the game. Also, if you haven’t played Yakuza: like a dragon it’s a must play this year and I implore everyone to nudge Ben Hanson into finishing it before end of the year game discussions because the final third of that game is the best part.

SlyckNic

Hey Ben and cohorts. How is everyone's week going? Wanted to write in about the book Ready Player Two. It came out around Thanksgiving. I listen to all my books while I work, makes it easier for me. They brought Wil Wheaton back from the first one. I really enjoyed the first book. I've listened to it about 10 times now. I was really excited for the sequel. I will say that I still think the first one is the better one. However I like how Ernest Cline built on the first book and expanded the world. If anyone has read the first one and enjoyed it, you should go read this one. A lot of references to pop and nerd culture. One of my favorite parts of the book is where Wheaton has to read some song lyrics. Scene in the book where Salt-N-Pepa's "Push It" has to be recited. So hearing Wheaton sing the lyrics with a kinda monotone voice is the best. Caught myself laughing out loud. Will probably be listening to it again next year. Thanks for indulging me on this topic. Would also like to say I am also a Nic from Atlanta. Might be the only Nic that doesn't use a K and the end. Thanks for all the content y'all put out. SlyckNic

Daniel Elliott

Hey y'all! I'd love to recommend two tracks from games this year (well, sort of this year?) that were more than just good music for me: 1) Ellie singing "Take On Me" - This is the moment of the game that resonated with me the most during my playthrough. It was such a sweet moment in the middle of a pandemic-based apocalypse, which felt extra sweet playing it this year. 2) "Too Late to Love You" from Kentucky Route Zero Act III - It was such an awesome moment to have a full-on live music performance in the middle of this game. Much like the atmosphere in the room in-game, I felt transported to a world where I could actually watch a band play music live, which hit me in a way I wasn't expecting. Plus, the game lets us choose the lyrics, which added a nice touch. Thanks for being such a wonderful crew! Daniel E

Hello all! I'm so excited for your best video game music of the year discussion with Emily Reese. Last year it was one of my favorite MinnMax episodes! There were several soundtracks I loved from the past year but here are some particular highlights: Of course the Final Fantasy VII Remake has an outstanding soundtrack, building off of one of the best soundtracks of all time, and while I realize this is a very standard pick, "One-Winged Angel" is one of my favorite songs from a video game ever, and the arrangement that they made for the remake is great. https://youtu.be/EB8K0AJgiWs Also have you heard the Orchestral Arrangement Album that Square Enix released for FFVIIR? It is very good and includes a battle medley that has the classic Final Fantasy VII victory fanfare right at the end, and they added a chorus that sings "Def-i-nite-ly it's a victory! Ha!" https://sndup.net/3z67 (sorry for the weird link, it's not on YouTube) Streets of Rage 4 also has a great soundtrack, and my favorite song is "The Streets." https://youtu.be/QbY1jHw2tbM Lastly, the soundtrack for Sludge Life is fantastic, and my favorite is probably "LL Cool Hans." https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&t=23m30s&v=Y4wBCCI5Ys0 Thanks again for all the good work! And thanks Emily Reese for coming back!

Hello, I know everyone is screaming about FF7 Remake's music, which is good, but Persona 5 Royal is every bit as good as well. The new tracks deliver some great music. There were a number of tracks that really hit me emotionally near the end of the game, like "I believe", but I have to go with "Throw Away Your Mask". It plays during the final encounter in the game, and hits a little differently than other tracks. https://youtu.be/Kbw6hF7tHns I really loved last years music show, and I'm looking forward to this one as well. Thanks!

Brooke Burnes

Hello! The entire Destiny 2: Beyond Light OST is incredible. I think Deep Stone Lullaby is the best song from a video game in 2020 though. It's incredible on its own, but after 9 hours of trying to beat the Atraks encounter on that first day, this song was everything. My raid group and I were immediately just ready to go on the next encounter after this song. https://youtu.be/qBIJFTPPp-8

Scott McRae

Favorite song has to be Ben Babbit's rendition of "You've got to Walk " from Kentucky Route Zero, but "Paradise (Stay Forever)" from the Paradise Killer soundtrack is a close second, and the whole city pop vibe of that album as a whole, really works for me and then final recommendations are the new opening song from Persona 5 called "Royal Days", Ellie and Joel's crushing "If I ever were to lose you" and this is the wild card but the opening theme of Sakura Wars absolutely slaps. Love you guys! Can't wait for this discussion, love having music and game worlds collide, so much unsung great music. And yeah the FF7 soundtrack is great but there's so much good music from this year! We oughta show it all some love. My list of favorite songs for the year is 800 songs deep, artists have been churning content out in the pandemic so we should try to appreciate as much as we can of this overwhelming avalanche of content.

Chris Lytikainen

What is your favorite licensed song in a game? One that you felt just matched the tone and content of the game. Personally, I'm leaning towards Alan Wake and Borderlands for their respective choices.
