We're doing it, everybody. We're kicking off our gigantic game club discussion of CD Projekt RED's Cyberpunk 2077. But, as always, we need your comment to read on the show! This time the panelists are Ben Hanson, Leo Vader, Suriel Vazquez, and Jeff Marchiafava.

For this week's discussion, we're covering the game's first act. So roughly the first 7 hours or so. The game clearly says "Act 2" on the screen, so please don't spoil anything beyond that point.

Submit a comment on Cyberpunk 2077's Act1, and please get specific. Don't write a long review, please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. We want to get to as many comments as possible. Let's talk about your favorite line, NPC, perk, item, weapon, anything specific. The more specific you are, the higher the odds of us reading your comment during the discussion. We'll finish collecting comments on Tuesday morning.

For your own reference, here's the schedule for the rest of The Deepest Dive...

December 28th - Act 2's Sidequests

January 12th - Act 2's Critical Path

January 19th - Act 3/The Ending

You can watch us record The Deepest Dive live on Tuesday evening if you're at the $10 Backstage Pass tier on Patreon. The link will be in the Backstage Pass tier on the Discord. Thanks for your support.

A massive bug I found in the game is outside the city there is a garbage dump. Trash littered everywhere. I had a mission to get to and there was a field of trash in my way, so naturally I went over it. Or tried to anyways. I swear I randomly dropped dead at least 10 times trying to trudge through the garbage for seemingly no reason whatsoever. I would be walking and jumping through like normal until out of nowhere the screen would turn red and V would drop and the now memeworthy "Flatline" tag line came across the screen. This bug was very annoying and I hope it's patched soon.

As someone who is usually turned away from deep skill trees, I'm really loving how it works in this game. You can focus on just a few areas, in my case I'm all brawn, reflex, and intelligence with paying little attention to stealth or hacking. What's great is that I feel like the game never punishes me for not focusing on stealth or hacking. I never feel underprepared for a mission even if it suggests using stealth. I feel like the game is meant to cater to the players wants and needs and it never feels out of place or against the story/ world. On a side note; Silverhand's memory intro mission is the coolest character introduction I've experienced in recent years.

Did anyone realize that CDPR took out wall running with the Mantis claws? I grinded mission after mission to get enough money and street cred so that I could get the Mantis claws purely because they looked so amazing to use in the trailers! Low and behold they are nothing more than a Melee weapon that just so happens to pop out of your forearms. Very disappointing.

Not about the main story but I came across a really well written side gig to retrieve some stolen meds from a gang. getting up to the hideout and expecting a firefight with a cartel but seeing this broken ex soldier named William Hare with PTSD who just wanted to numb the pain and couldn't afford to. After a conversation with him at gunpoint about the the lack of effect his actions would have on the issues plaguing this work and talking him into defeatedly giving me the meds. I felt a genuine sadness for the guy who had no choice in what had happened to him in his life. As I left I just heard a loan gun shot after going back in seeing him dead on the chair I was surprisingly upset by the whole series of events. This game can capture the ruthlessness and disposability of human life that the world is pushing to evoke. Even in the smaller side missions.

StillGotGame

Anyone else notice that there doesn't seem to be any options to change your hair, tattoos or other not clothing features after the initial setup? So, a game set in a world obsessed with changing its appearances doesn't actually give you the option to change your appearance??

Jeorin

This game is chock full of references to other media franchises, but my favorite is one I found right at the beginning of the game in V's apartment. If you go into their bathroom, instead of finding toilet paper, there are a set of three seashells to the right of the toilet. This is a reference to the film Demolition Man. What is your favorite reference so far? (Link to film clip for those unfamiliar with the Demolition Man referenence: https://youtu.be/n7nFEnFtvCM?t=28)

WHY DO THE KIDS WEAR KID SIZED HOTPANTS

Was I the only one who got pretty lost in the first couple of hours? I was fine with the opening section (I chose Nomad) but then I found myself in a car with Jackie talking to a lady called T-Bug thinking where did she come from and who is this girl I'm rescuing? After a while it all seemed to come together but I did find the narrative bit confusing initially

Steven Lambson

So many vending machines in the future! Seems like a bad idea with hackers running amok.

Andrew vala

Jackie is the heart and soul of act 1. CDPR did an amazing job breathing humanity and genuineness into his character. One prime example is when you meet back up with Jackie outside your apartment. Rather than see him standing at the entrance, he is ordering food at a street vendor because he got hungry waiting for you. As our conversation progressed, he started eating the food he ordered. I was dumbstruck at how lifelike his mouth movements were while eating and how sincere he was listening to V during that conversation. Absolutely amazing on a technical and storytelling level.

Hey Minnmax 👋, I won't lie, I bought into the hype. I was convinced this game would sit at the top after CDPR's The Witcher 3. Games good, nothing special but good. I just shoulda tempered my expectations, especially since I never even liked The Witcher 3. I think I'm part of the problem guys 🤦‍♂️

Clemens Zobel

I was really excited for this game but I wasn't feeling the first two hours or so. Now that I'm further in and the city has opened up, I am absolutely engrossed. Also, I don't like how much loot is cluttering the game world. It was really slowing me down the first couple hours to search every nook and cranny. I had to turn off that part of my brain and I'm enjoying it so much more. It's weird, cause I don't mind the clutter in Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Also hoping there are more player housing options later on like Elder Scrolls or GTA Online.

Kris Calkins

Hey Cyberpunks, how bout them Pop-Turds huh? Got any favorite consumable names?

Conor

I think CDPR is very good at making games that end up being great by the time you finish them, IF you finish them. Witcher 3 was like this as well, and to me that was a game that’s better than the sum of its parts because in the end it’s the totality of its scale along with the bevy of systems at your disposal—which you won’t end up using 100% of, making some of it feel like like pointless clutter—that end up creating an open world experience that is different than Bethesda and Ubisoft. Why are CDPR games “good”? Because they go about suspending your disbelief differently by creating a world that literally looks real. Even AC Odyssey for example you can still FEEL that the islands are scaled down representatives of actual Greek islands at times. This city is a legit city and that is unique enough for me to be interested in as a video game. Also, fix the damn bugs because holy lord am I fighting this game right now. 1 crash per 1-2 hours and I have a growing list of bugs that I’m keeping purely bc its hilarious

BBK

As it turns out, this game is not the second coming of Christ we all wanted. As another open-world RPG, however, it’s damn awesome. That said, the console experience is a massive disappointment, even on next-gen machines. I am playing the PS4 version on a PS5, and the visuals are just such a big disappointment. Population density is clearly turned way down, textures are low-res and bland, and there is a striking lack of detail in the world. Indoor areas look good, but everything else simply doesn’t. It takes the power of the PS5 to make this game look like a mediocre PS4 game. I can’t believe this game originally had an April release date. I would have gladly waited another year or two for a more polished version. Graphics aside, I love the world they’ve created and the RPG itself, and I am chomping at the bit for the next gen version to be ready. The current console version just doesn’t offer the sense of immersion that the game is clearly going for.

I'm finding this to be an okay-to-good game but I think it may have lost its way in pursuing and finding 'cyberpunk': the further I progress, the more it feels like flashy table-dressing built to compensate for otherwise average under-the-hood elements, both mechanically and narratively. The enemy combat AI is hallow — they have little to nothing in maneuver sophistication and have no tactical depth. There's no unit AI engaging. Sure, you can stealth, if you'd prefer, and there is some hacking involved, but the player character's combat mechanics themselves are not exceptional. The UX has some odd choices, with lots of unnecessary visual and audio noise to distract. (Why not a cleaner UI? I'd prefer a better source for my "immersion.") Thus far, the plot is not very cyberpunk; the 'dog-eat-dog' conceit is not significantly counter-culture to the world's narrative, nor does it subvert any stereotypes. Rather, it leans into them exceptionally hard in a frequently lazy fashion. A 'biotech' box is checked off by the Johnny-chip hijack, but I don't find it's enough to compensate. Outside of Johnny, the garish clothing, and a mostly implied dystopia, how much 'cyberpunk' are you folks finding in this game, thus far? I'm really hoping it "gets there," so to speak, through Acts 2 and 3.

ThinkClint

One thing I’ve noticed; the African American community/culture is almost non-existent. Nearly every black NPC I’ve come across has a foreign accent, or none at all—it feels odd for a US, west coast city. A bit of the European roots of CD Projekt Red bleeding through?

JHerb

Hey Ben and crew. I really enjoyed the character Jackie Welles in Act 1. I thought CDPR did a good job of introducing a character early who was easy to like, easy to connect with, and genuinely a bit loveable. So far, the personality of the characters and world are what really keep pulling me into the game. What were some of your favorite characters/world moments?

jkk411

As broken as it is right now in some ways, there is definitely something about this game that is drawing me in. I'm impressed at the animation in many of the story sequences - Jackie nervously bouncing his leg before the big heist, Viktor casually kicking his stool across the room before you get your first implants... There's a lot of work being put into these little scenes that help bring the game to life. It leads me to pay more attention during the story sequences because they don't feel as cookie cutter as they do in games like Fallout or Outer Worlds. I want to shout out the sound design. From the cacophony of Wakako's pachinko parlor to the chimes inside Misty's Esoterica, I have been impressed at how much the sound contributes to the overall vibe of the different spaces in the open world. At one point I found an indoor park you could enter with a big tree in the middle, and when the doors closed behind me, a quiet fell over the room. I could still hear the muffled chaos of the city just on the other side of the glass, but it was like a little oasis in the middle of Night City.

Nick Wright

Has anybody figured out yet WHY you can customize your characters junk yet? I've taken my pants off, and it's full frontal in the menu, but in the world your dude is in his boxers. You don't see anything in the Hard-R rated scenes either... was it all just a publicity stunt? Not to mention there are glitches where your characters "main weapon" is clipping through their pants... seems like a lot of extra work for zero benefit, and additional glitches (of which this game needs no more of!)

Nat K

So I got mislead. After the 2019 Story Trailer at E3 where we saw Jackie's death, CDPR had said that this was just one example of how the game can play out. They heavily implied Jackie could be saved. Knowing this and loving Jackie I tried my hardest during the heist to play maximum stealth and keep him safe. But at the end of the mission when we were asked to make a sprint into the Delamain Taxi Cab in a hail of bullets, it was like the premonition of 2019 was coming true. And the result was me being absolutely gutted about Jackie dying. I thought I could do something about it. I tried my best and the fact is I couldn't make a difference. My best choom is dead and it happened exactly the way that mysterious fortune teller said.

John Bogan

The world design and art direction is really strong. I enjoy just meandering around, to the point where I basically never get into a vehicle or fast travel - I just walk everywhere, looking at stuff. Unfortunately, the NPC interactions leave very little to be excited by, so I mostly just ignore them.

Mark Ramirez

Hey Ben & the dive crew, Getting to the body mod choices was great! I spent a while just looking at all the future options and planning out what I want. Prediction time, what arm mod are you going to go for? Mantis blades? Gorilla arms? Projectile launcher? Arm whip?

Joe Kafchinski

I gave 100 eddys to that preacher outside Misty and Vik's. He's definitely on to something with the alien vampires from Alpha Centauri, right?

Alex C Hackney

I am in love with this game. I hate to hear people are having an issue running it on the last generation, but it has been pretty great on PC. What system are you playing the game on? I had a hilarious glitch where some pedestrian walked through my cutscene and blew up all the tables and plates. Classic

Nick Rothe

The thing I love the most so far is how it feels like the Fifth Element a personal favorite of mine come to life.

Emanuel Areias

I've been playing on Stadia and have had 0 issues, game feels great!! My absolute favorite thing to do is look for crimes just to feel like a Cyberpunk Batman. Sneaking around and non lethally knocking enemies out and if that fails, just punching them!

Jose Gabriel

Just looking at the scale of the city is in itself a treat. Do you think this game would be as immersive if it was in third person?

Derin

For most of the first act of the game, I was experiencing sensory overload with how many systems the game has, the highly detailed world, and the abundance of UI always being on screen. The game is tough to ease into at first, but I'm slowly starting to get used to all of it. This, and the numerous bugs and issues, definitely impact my enjoyment of the game, but I still want to keep coming back to the game.

Shawn Mills

I really enjoyed all the side characters in this section but my favorite was the ripperdoc you meet behind Misty's shop. He has an amazing name, Viktor Vector, and unlike everyone else in the world he isnt searching for fame or power, he just takes pride in his work and is just happy living his life. If you look at his TV it shows a fight and he mentions he was a former fighter. I just hope I can earn enough money to pay off my enormous debt to him in Act 2.

David Dillinger (yojimbodjd)

Oopsies - I accidentally blew Brick to pieces when trying to rescue him. I liked that little detail where things can go awry if you’re not paying attention to what you’re doing.

James Knight

I felt justified in choosing the Corpo story, when you land in that fancy ass Arasaka aircraft, interrupting people playing basket ball. Leading to them confronting you, it was satisfying watching their ire melt into fear as you bark: "Arasaka counter-intel. We done here?" Felt like an 80s movie asshole, it was great. Also, your mileage may vary, but turning off 'film grain' on Series X, greatly improved the visuals for me

Joshua Stidger

Hello Ben and the Deepest Divers, So there I was, in a conversation with the Ripper Doc after being taken back from the dump and fought through the motorcycle hooligans, when the biggest trap yet was waiting to be sprung on V. One of the conversation choices was "So what, I'm a Frankenstein now?" and I knew if I chose that dialogue choice Victor would have sneered in contempt as he slid his glasses up his nerd ass nose and say "Actually Frankenstein was the doctor, not the monster V." So of course I chose the other option not wanting to give this guy what he craved, to humiliate V when she was already down and out. But now I must know, did anyone choose that choice and if so where my fears realized or did I just out nerd myself in thinking that the game was going to go for such low hanging fruit? Thanks for doing the Deepest Dive, I love all of them even the ones I don't participate in!

Roel

Initially I felt rather disappointed by what this game turned out to be. CDPR said several times that this was a "true RPG" and at least at one point mentioned that it is in first person because YOU are the character. Turns out that V has a very pre-defined personality and at least so far the dialog options don't really offer anything to shape him/her into something else. Also I feel like my initial plan of going for a hack/stealth based build is just not working since several quests force you into massive shootouts. That said, once I accepted the game for what it is instead of what they promised, or at least what I thought it would be, I'm still enjoying it very much.

WaywardSatellite

It was a little disappointing that I felt like I knew exactly where this first act was going the whole time because of pre-release footage and E3 trailers. Especially since the way the first act ends could have been a bit of a surprise twist out of the gate. But hopefully there're more surprises in store. So far I like that using abilities makes them grow stronger like in Skyrim, and the open world feels dense with things to do like a GTA game. That's a strong combo of games to borrow from. Also, shout out to Stadia that let me play the game immediately on launch night while steam was overloaded with people trying to download the day one patch.

Richard Herron

Playing the PC version, the level of detail offered by Night City is truly overwhelming. While the environment itself is notably amazing, the NPCs really play their part in bringing life to the landscape. For the first time in video game history I noticed a street musician actually playing the guitar in what appears to be motion captured fashion. The fretting hand transitions between positions of the fretboard in accordance to the music. Beyond that chord shapes check out with the left hand while the right hand runs through chords and individual notes in a proper finger style approach. Finally, somebody went and did the damn thing!

Finlay

Setting aside the myriad bugs I have encountered in the PS4 Pro version, I have noticed four or five typos in the first few hours. These include "Transfer" spelt as "Transfrer" in a dialogue choice, and an accidentally misplaced "a" in a datapad I was reading, as well as a misspelled subtitle. It is obviously not a huge issue, especially relative to the game’s other problems, but it seems more prevalent than I am used to so far (as a freak who notices these kinds of things) and it's a bit immersion-breaking to me when I come across an easily-fixable typo. Has anyone else noticed / been bothered by this, or am I getting my knickers in a knot over nothing?

Breadward

Not really hooked with the first portion of this game. I think the whole structure of it is clunky. You're introduced to Jackie, but it skips over you building a relationship with him using a montage and jumps right intothis big heist mission while a lot of things are left unexplained. Specifically, what is this skill tree system? It's very open, which I like, but there is no organization and I didn't realize until nearly the end of Act 1 that within a given path there are multiple paths. So under Intelligence there is Breach Protocol and then a separate tab for Quickhack upgrades. There seems to be quite a bit that is either not explained or done so poorly. If there is anything people stumbled into during their time so far I'd appreciate sharing it going into the rest of this game. Thanks CLCs. Also crashes. Can't not mention it. I've had games crash before maybe a couple times during a playthorugh. If I'm playing this game for 2 or more hours, at this point I expect at least 1 crash (playing on PS5).

Simon M

2077 more like 2177. Do you think in 50 years we will actually have all those upgrades? I feel like it’s way off just like what back to the future thought we’d have by now.

Derek Wagner

Hello Minnmaxers! Nearly through this first portion of the game and I am really liking it so far. One highlight for me would definitely have to be the music, I’ve loved nearly every song on the radio and all the in-mission tracks. What are your thoughts on the music in Cyberpunk 2077? Side note, this game really reminds me of The Outer Worlds! First person perspective, futuristic setting, streamlined RPG mechanics, and certainly some “jank in the trank”. Surely I can’t be the only one who’s made this connection, right?

Hyperlight Blossom

We gotta talk about these radio stations. I’m surprised there’s so many stations for sub-genres of electronic music. Pacific Dreams: Chillwave, Night FM: Techno & Dubstep, Radio Vextelstrom: Industrial, Samizdat Radio: Ambient, Radio Pebkac: Eurodance. This detail replicates an authentic music scene in the world of Cyberpunk. I just wish there was more stations for the other genres of music, but they each only have one. I wonder if this was intentional.

Andy H

What just Happened? I feel like I got off a 3 hour long rollercoaster ride. I don’t know what I was expecting from Cyberpunk, but I definitely wasn’t expecting one of the longest most epic linear story missions I’ve every experienced. That is what I call a heist. I just stole a Keanu Reeves A.I. from the most powerful person on the planet and now Keanu is trying to eat my brain and take over my body. And on top of that, the part playing as Keanu made me feel like a complete badass.

InstagramExpert

I just wanna point out my absolute favourite little detail in the game... Rubics Cubes only have four tiles on one side. Im wondering tho, does this make them easier to solve or not?

Alex Montgomery

Hey MinnMax crew! Been enjoying my playthrough of Cyberpunk with my Corpo V. It's been quite a ride so far. To touch on some of the side content you can do in Act 1: has anyone else noticed the optional, sometimes hidden narratives in these gigs? As an example, I came across your typical "gang activity" mission to clear out some enemies from an area and secure evidence. After doing so, I decided to take a closer look around and found a shipping container filled with people. They thanked me and ran for freedom, leaving behind a not-so-lucky victim in the back. A shard I found on her contained a panicked call between her and her mother during the kidnapping. I'm a little torn. I feel rewarded for taking the extra steps to uncover the story to an otherwise uneventful gig. On the other hand, I do kind of miss the straightforward storytelling of a side quest from something like the Witcher 3. What do you guys think? Should CD Project Red have made the stories tied to the gigs more obvious, or is rewarding inquisitive players the way to go?

Crayter

Thats alot of dildos. Not a complaint. Just an observation.

Skyler Denning

Found a few fun references to other games. There are Roach Race arcade cabinets throughout the city. One of the cab side missions, the car speaks like Glados and says there is no cake :(. Also found a BB (Death Stranding) inside the police station during a side mission. Anyone found any others so far?

John Bogan

Why is there so much JUNK in this game! I hate it! Collecting all these sodas serves no purpose! I’ve never drank a soda, or used an ashtray, or a lighter - not even once. What is the point of all this crap? Just to strip it down to make upgrade material or something?

Mitchy

I was really surprised by the fact that they killed off a major character like Jackie in the first act like that... Really showed some balls on CD Projekt Red’s part. Although in hindsight that E3 2019 trailer kinda spoiled it...

Mitchy

One trap Cyberpunk seems to fall into like many other RPG's is the dissonance between what your options say and what your character says/does. On paper you may be asking a simple question or trying to have some banter, only for V to do a complete 180 and come off as a complete a-hole. Really wish CDPR found a better way around this.

Levi

Did any of you play the side mission that was given at afterlife by a character “Dennis” you are tasked with saving a surgeon from Japan. When you save him he line by line repeats a full office quote about how he was a surgeon for the “Tiger Claws” and accidentally killed the big boss but the secret was that he actually killed boss on purpose. I do a terrible job explaining https://youtu.be/2wcI10CNuxU That link shows the line in cyberpunk https://youtu.be/1W39_v4PUGM Anyway fun little nugget.
