Can the cohorts come up with new name for the Walking Simulator genre? It deserves better.

Tanner Hoisington

The new administration in D.C has to nominate a Surgeon General to lead the country's pandemic response. Due to a technicality, only video game doctors are eligible. Who do you choose between: Dr. Robotnik, Dr. Zed (Borderlands), Dr. Wily, Dr. Neo Cortex, Dr. Baldhead(Guilty Gear), Dr. Crygor (Warioware) or Dr. Mario. Please choose carefully...and then feel free to nominate an actually qualified game doctor.

This was inspired by the birthday chat last week. My grade 4 teacher actively disliked me for some reason - a fact my parents and I still can’t understand. On their birthday each student was able to pick a prize from the birthday box and sit at the teacher’s desk for half the day. On my bday I was never invited to sit at the desk and when offered the birthday box there were only pencils instead of the usual cheap toys and fun items. This was the worst birthday I recall. What was your worst birthday?

Howdy gang, I think my most anticipated release for 2021 is (hopefully) Hollow Knight: Silksong. I felt that the first game was a near perfect experience and probably the best game that has brought the "soulsbourne" formula into a new and unique experience. Bouncing off of that thought, do you think the "soulsbourne" formula will continue to influence games in 2021?

Hey cohorts or whatever! I just bought Mario 3D All Stars and I'm replaying my childhood with Super Mario 64 and I really enjoy listening to your Deepest Dive on it as I go. It's what actually got me to join the $5 tier! It got me wondering, what is everyone's #1 choice for a future Deepest Dive? You know, that game you know probably won't ever make the cut but you just love so much for some reason? For me, I would love for you guys to do a Deepest Dive over Mega Man Legends, but aside from the other 11 people in the world I know that's probably not going to be a popular choice.

Hey all, With all the discussion of Yakuza: Like a Dragon during the Game of the Year discussions, it made me kind of want to check out the game. The only problem is that I've never played any of the Yakuza games. That made me think about some of the other long-running series I've never had the time to check out, and the fact that I have no idea where to even begin with some of them, especially since a lot of early games are primarily playable on defunct consoles. If I wanted to finally check out Yakuza, where should I start? And what about other long-running series, like Metal Gear, Silent Hill, or even Resident Evil or Gears of War? Is there an easy onramp into those series, or should I just muddle through as best I can? Shane

Have you ever had an experience with a video game curse? I know that sounds crazy, but let me give you some backstory. Back in the early millennium, my brother and I were playing Majora's Mask on a road trip from the Midwest down to Florida. We had our travel-size CRT and the N64 plugged into our cigarette lighter (feeling old yet?). Whenever we hit a bump in the road or the car got moderately jostled around, the N64 would reset, and my brother would lose all his progress in that cycle. But this only happened in Woodfall Temple, and it happened three or four times on that trip. Twenty years later, what we eventually would call "Odolwa's Wrath" returned when I was playing through Woodfall Temple and the power at out house went out, resetting the Wii U right after I got the Bow and Arrow and causing me to lose about 8 heart pieces, two masks, and the Song of Awakening since I had to restart at the Dawn of the First Day. Has anyone else ever had this kind of experience with a game before?

Hunter Sax

Hey hi hello, What are some of your favorite "video game" things? For example when the camera seamlessly flows from cinematic to behind the shoulder gameplay. Any other good "video game" things?

Woj Jed

Hey Cohorts, with Game pass becoming popular, can you see companies releasing shorter gaming experiences and not adding so much fluff, I'm looking at you Assassin's Creed, because hitting an hour mark may not be as important anymore? Can you see a shift to creating experiences that last 5 to 10 hours instead of 100 hours? As I get older I find that I have less time to game and would prefer shorted more condensed experiences. Where does MinnMax stand on this? Thanks, Voy

Blake Barber

I am late to the game, but I just finished Hellblade last night and I am still recovering. It affected me on a deep level and I found myself both depressed and in awe of how much I empathized with Senua's journey through mental battles. But, I am not sure if I had fun while playing this game. What do you all think? How important is fun to a game? Is it even possible for a "fun" game to resonate at the deep level HellBlade does.

Grizzled Gaming

Hey, gang! Ben tell JeffM Grizzled Gaming says "hello", he'll know what it means. So what’s the best vegetable and why is it garlic? Discuss.

Thomas Deranek

My question is simple. What is the amazing Waffle mix that JeffM was given for Christmas!? The people need to know! Thomas Deranek Kansas City, KS

Starkiller

Hey MinnMax crew. Right now my most anticipated game for 2021 is Dying Light 2. The first game was awesome and memorable within my group of friends. Trying to survive out at night for the first time is a terrifying game experience I will probably never forget. What do you think is going on with that game? We got a gameplay demo back in 2019 and it was originally supposed to come out early 2020, but there's been no word on it since.

Bradley St Clair

Hi gang, I have a non-gaming question for you. So you are only allowed to eat 3 foods for the rest of your life. No compromises. What 3 foods do you pick? NOTE: these need to be 'whole foods' so you can't just say 'bread' or 'chocolate', as that comprises multiple ingredients. You could say wheat, or fish, or corn, etc - I am sure you get the idea. The objective is obviously not to die of malnutrition (unless this is such a hellish idea that death is preferable!) Love the show - great work and all the best for 2021!

Jeffrey Rommel

How many games on your personal top 10 list of 2020 were not on your radar at the start of the year?

PandaHandz

What up crew! What games do you refuse to play, both video and board game? I refuse to play Fort Nite because, just not my bag. I also refuse to play Monoply, I am to blame for my Monoply hate, I just end up trolling the game and it becomes a mini game for me claiming one of each property as fast as possible to prevent any monopolies. I'm the worst, the only tolerable version of Monopoly is Monopoly Deal. P.S. Jeffm never disclosed the waffle funnel cake mix!

Jonathan Fenn

Hey Minnmaxers, So I played through Hollow Knight when it released on the Switch and it quickly became one of my favourite games of all time. I unlocked just about everything and found every secret, but never managed to beat the game's true boss, the Radiance. I recently replayed the game on PS5, but again have not been able to beat the Radiance. So my question is: what are your gaming white whales? What challenges have you banged your head against for hours but never overcome (but still think you might one day). Thanks! Jonathan (P.S. I know it's late, but wishing you all a great 2021)

Seth Jones

Howdy MinnGang, I started playing Yakuza: Like A Dragon last week after listening to you all praise it during the top twen-I MEAN TWO TENS. Nanba is my guy. He’s a former nurse, I’m a nursing student. He’s Japanese, my grandma is Japanese. He’s homeless, I dress like I’m homeless. I don’t necessarily see myself in Nanba (2 decade age gap) but he’s Just. My Guy. Have you all played a game with a character where you were just like “this is my guy/gal?” Compliments to the chef!

RickyWinterborn

i had the reaction i think a lot of people had at the beginning of quarantine, that i could work from home forever! commuting sucks, water cooler gossip is overrated etc. fast forward a year and i'm really starting to accept that i took all that for granted. are ya'll content doing the show remotely forever like this or do you hope to eventually all be at one table with a couple cameras, ala OG GI show?

RickyWinterborn

do you think we'll reach a point where simply all games have been made? with the rate of games being released per day, the amount of genres blending into each other and the sheer number of hours consuming games, it seems like eventually it will be impossible to create something new. when dubstep was popular i remember thinking how can another genre top this? it's maxing out the available noises and genre influences you can put in a song. and there hasn't really been another defined genre fad in music like that since...

Michael Couture

Hey crew, The day after the capitol riots last week I was watching the news and they were showing tweets from the public about their feelings on what happened and how they were processing the events. One person tweeted that they were going to stay inside all day and play their favorite video game, Persona 5 Royal. The news anchor pronounced it as "PerSAWNA and after reading the tweet he said, "That's a very popular video game." I couldn't help but laugh because the last thing I expected to hear on the news was Persona 5. My question is, was there ever a time you heard a video game mentioned outside of gaming news media that caught your attention?

Tadatoo

Hello! I have purchased Dreams about a week ago and I’m looking for some interesting games/experiences. Does the cohort have any recommendations? Thanks!

Crystal Skull is better than The Temple of Doom purely because it has Nazi's to defeat Prove me wrong *drops mic*

Hello! After finishing Hades, I finally hopped into Pyre and...holy s***! This game is incredible. The gameplay stands out as truly unique & fun. What are some other games with really unique & fun gameplay that have maybe slipped under the radar for most gamers? BONUS QUESTION: Rank your favorite Supergiant Games developed games.

Donnie

Hey friends! Do you have any gaming goals for this year? Maybe trying a genre you’ve avoided, more of one you’ve only dabbled in, or something else? My goal is to try more smaller games to broaden my horizons, as well as finish the one play through of Dark Souls 3 I started back in 2019. Those bosses are mean!

Scott Wilton

Hey guys, I need help! I listen to several gaming podcasts and one of the most talked about franchises is Final Fantasy. This makes it difficult for me because I have never played any of them. I feel like I at least want to have some context to the conversation, so can you help me out with where to start? I have a Switch and Xbox One. Thanks for all your hard work!!

Cade Mead

What is the balance/acceptable rate of negativity in Minnmax? Every once in awhile, issues with a game, the industry, or something else will come up that gets jokingly dismissed rather than discussed, in favor of being positive. While the positive outlook is appreciated, and refreshing most of the time, I feel like it's important to acknowledge the negatives now and then. Apologies for the tone.

Noah D.

Hi gang! I've been playing a lot of No Mans Sky lately and been grinding A TON to get the living ship. Little did I know, the quest requires 24 hour wait time before completing the next quest step. I'm on day 3 right now, making this the longest quest I've ever done in a video game. With that being said, what's the longest it has taken you to complete a quest/ mission in a game with no deviations to other missions or games? Keep up the great work! All the best, Noah D.

Justin Ray

According to SSBwiki.com which of these Super Smash Bros Ultimate characters weigh more? Bowser (135) or Donkey Kong (127) Mario (98) or Luigi (97) Peach (89) or Zelda (85) Cloud (100) or Sephiroth (79)

When given the choice of voiceover vs written dialogue, does voiceover always win? Is written dialogue something that you avoid?

Ben Shively

Simple but important and timely question, will you do a Resident Evil 4 Deepest Dive for its recent 16th anniversary?

Jake Z

Do you think people today are too moralistic in their interpretation of art? In the new mode of criticism it seems like any art that's about something has to have a "message" about that thing or a "moral of the story." I look to art to reflect the complexity of human existence, not to didactically convey a lesson.

chris cuevas

Hey cohorts. I just wanted to ask if any of you guys/gals use YouTube to listen to game music and have been as frustrated with the experience as I have recently. With the recent crackdown of DMCA most of my favorite OSTs and playlists are gone or gutted and all that's left is remixes and fan covers which are cool in their own right but personally not what I'm into. I know its first world problems and I realize composers don't want their stuff getting ripped to YouTube for some schmuck to potentially monetize, but there doesn't seem to be a good alternative for the fans like myself who just love listening to their favorite video game music. Thanks for listening to my mini Tim Turi rant and hope you all had a great holiday break!

Nordley

Real life is getting a new patch next week. You’ll be able to look up any possible statistic about yourself. What would you look up? I’ve always been curious if there’s anything at all that I’m #1 in the world at, no matter how strange.

Ryan Foshee

Howdy Benn (two Ns) and the Minnotaurs! Well, I did it. I finally scaled one of the biggest metaphorical mountains on my backlog— Final Fantasy 7 (the original). I rolled credits a couple weeks ago and, to be quite honest, that world and it’s story and characters have basically infected my mind. I was going to write in about this last week, but I missed the deadline. However, I was pleasantly surprised to hear a very similar topic discussed by Ben and Ana. That being said, I heavily considered not writing in this week, for fear of looking like some sort of creepy copycat, but I decided there’s no real harm in trying. Here we go: FF7 was an incredible experience. Though dated and clunky in a lot of areas, I was actually able to remove myself from the present and imagine what it would be like experiencing this game when it first came out. On top of that, I loved the relevancy of the game, especially considering how the themes of environmentalism parallel very real conversations that are happening today. The bottom line is that I find myself really wanting to dive deeper in to that world, but I’m not sure where I should go next. I know Ben is the resident FF7 expert, but I want any of the cohorts to feel free to chime in! What is ny next destination, so to speak? Should I jump immediately to the remake? Should I try to find and play another one of the games in the series and/or watch the cutscenes as Ben mentioned last week? Are there any good podcasts, articles, or other supplemental material that make great companion pieces to the game/explore the history of its development? Basically, I want ravenously consume anything and everything FF7. I understand if this is too close to the conversation from last week! Regardless, thanks for everything that you all do! You truly made 2020 bearable! P.S. Red XIII is truly the bestest boy.

Cameron

Hey cohorts. I’ve been making a lot of progress through my backlog lately, and there’s this sensation that often permeates my mind as I near a game’s climax. I of course mean the thought of “can I beat this game tonight?” While I want to enjoy each game I play as much as possible, the satisfying feeling of finishing a game and being able to finally be part of the conversation on it can sometimes be distracting to the game itself. I don’t want to treat each game like a checkbox, but there’s a lot out there I want to check out without playing too much at once. Anyways, what I want to focus on are those nights where you are ready to experience the ending of a game, only for a series of plot twists to drag the game out for several more hours. Or maybe you were off base entirely and discover a whole additional act or even half of a game awaits you. Sometimes it’s a joy to be in that world even longer, but other times it can sour what was otherwise a great experience. Other times, the ending itself might have been paced okay, but maybe you were so determined to finish it that it caused self-inflicted frustration? Whether it be because it caused an all-nighter or set you back several whole days, what are some longer than expected endings that left an impact for you and colored your overall lasting impression on a game, for better or worse. Being in the positions that you are and having to finish games for deadlines I imagine there should be some interesting thoughts on this. Keep up the great work and here’s to a fantastic 2021! -Cameron

The Krispy Kreme Lemur

Hi Ben and the crew, Simple question: how would your gaming habits change if you couldn't talk to anyone about the games you play? Love the show keep it up :)

henrik mortensen

Hello? I HATE modern power buttons. Lets turn off the PS4! Well, which off the two """buttons""" is it? Let me get a plus sized monocle. Ah there it is! A tiiiny power icon. Well lets turn it off. Push the button and you will hear a peep. And the blue light fades out and in. And fades. And fades. When does it turn off!? Suddenly the blue light turns orange......oookay? Is it off? Well if you plug out the cord it will say that you turned it off the wrong way when you reboot it. Lets turn of the xbox one! No need to because your strolling dog, crawling baby, too long relaxing leg, God or some dust will turn it off just by looking at that touch power button. The only console that have an at least okay power button is the switch. It is still two small and strange to push in, but the machine at least turns off at once (though actually it is some kind of sleep mode, but when its handheld it does not matter). Turning off the Xbox and especially the PS4 will take you the time it takes to find your DS and play through Yoshis Touch and Go! Hate your show, love the power button.

Tanner Methven

Hey Minnmax Crew, Bowser is the most iconic and, I would argue, best video game villain. But he’s never had his own solo game. So my question is: what developer would you like to see make a Bowser game?

Rambo Snyder

Hey Minnmax cohorts. What game would you most like to see a sequel or reboot of, and what would you like to see happen with it. I think a new splinter cell done similar to God of war would be awesome. (Appearing to be a single camera, not open world like usual ubi games). Keep up the great work!

Strange Sloth

Currently making my way through the master chief collection I have finished halo 1 and 2 which I have never played before, and now I just started halo 3. I remember playing this in high school with a buddy of mine but I don’t remember if we finished it. Halo infinite is one of my most anticipated games this year my question is What games do you know you started but can’t remember if you finished them? Also when do you think we will get a halo 3 anniversary/ remaster?

The Diddler

Do you think Nioh 2 is overlooked? I've been playing again recently and this game is really good. In my opinion, better than the "souls" games, but not better than Bloodborne or Sekiro.

Bucket of Jello

If you had to add an element of chance to your existing content, what be some silly/chaotic ways to do so? Secondly, on the goty hunts if whoever is with Leo has to roll a dice every 10 minutes where if they roll a 6, Leo will then have to turn the intensity to 11 treating it like a speed run/ the most hyped game of all time for the next 10 minutes. Good idea/bad idea? I love gamifying games to an unhealthy extent!!!!

Cody Hester

Hello, I was doing some grinding in Demon's Souls and was listening to Slipknot and Rob Zombie. The selection went quite well with Demon's Souls. Any musical and game pairings that worked surprisingly in sync you can think of? Ok thanks bye!

R0CK3T5YNT5T

Heyyyyloooooooo Ben Handyson and the console loving cohorts, Not a lot of my IRL friends have consoles but they do have phones so we play (almost every day) Call Of Duty Mobile Battle Royale and its fun - I actually like it so much more than Warzone and PUBG My questions, do you feel mobile gaming (non console i.e. not switch) doesn't get reported on in the mass media as much as console gaming? Why do you think that is? Shouldn't companies focus on it more due to the HUGE base that's out there that is untapped potential? Also do you think xCloud and Stadia address this need?

Jason Wojnar

Hey, do you think it is worth it to buy a switch now or should I wait for Switch Pro or successor? I feel like the dearth of Next-Gen games actually makes it a good opportunity to catch up on Nintendo's first-party output, but I'm afraid of spending 300 dollars (closer to 400 where I live, actually) only for a better version to be announced for the same price. What would you folks do? Sincerely, Jason Wojnar Kyiv, Ukraine

FlaminQueso

Hey howdy hey Hanson and the 'horts, With the announcement of both an Indiana Jones games from Machine Games/Bethesda and a new Star Wars game from Ubisoft, are licenced games on the rise? If they are, is that a bad thing? Having talented studios working on these popular Licenced games is exciting to me. Thanks, Greg "FlaminQueso"

saibher (cyber)

So the news is in. Ubisoft is working with Lucasfilm Games (which used to be LucasArts? What ever happened to them?!), to make a Star Wars game. Do you folks feel burnt out by the Star Wars scene? Or is this the renaissance of Lucasfilm's IPs?

KevinJ

Hi Ben and crew, first time commenter and new subscriber! One night a few years ago, I was biking home in the rain while listening to a podcast where the panel was talking about Shadow of Mordor, when I noticed my tire was going flat from a puncture. I had to walk my bike to a bus stop at an intersection I don't usually find myself at, and now every time I go past that intersection, I think of Shadow of Mordor. Do you have any locations, songs, foods, etc that trigger some sort of completely unrelated sense memory for you?
